A North Korean soldier, believed to be an army deserter, has been arrested in China after killing four ethnic Korean residents in Jilin Province near the Sino-North Korean border.
A South Korean government official said on Monday that the unidentified North Korean suspect is said to have been shot by Chinese military and police officers before being arrested. He reportedly remains in a coma.
The official said that the North Korean soldier killed the victims with a pistol he had stolen, while putting the clamps on two homes of the victims in Helong City near the Tumen River on December 27.
Stepping up surveillance along its border with North Korea, Chinese authorities have reportedly launched an extensive investigation into the unusual incident. North Korea has also redeployed its military units along the border.

wn.com/Turks Attack Koreans 'We Thought You Were Chinese '
A mob of Turkish nationalists protesting China’s ban on Muslims from worshipping and fasting during the holy month of Ramadan accidentally attacked a group of Korean tourists after mistaking them for Chinese nationals. A travel warning has now been issued by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs following violent clashes in the region amid the heightened tensions between the Muslim population and the Chinese government. We look at the story on the Lip News with Nik Zecevic and Margaret Howell.

Okinawa, Japan is riddled with numerous United States military bases. There are groups on Okinawa who want to close down the U.S. bases.
These U.S. bases are needed to assist the U.S. Marines to respond rapidly in the event aggression needs to be halted or just provide a deterrent.
The Okinawans who have a legitimate concern about the American bases are being exploited by the commies. The commies in China and North Korea would like to see American bases close in Okinawa. With a decrease USA role in Asia the commies will be free to continue with their aggressive belligerent activities against their neighbors in Asia. More specifically they can be expected to move on Japan’s Senkaku Islands, and Okinotorishima atoll (Marcus).
When these Okinawans demonstrate, they are in agreement with the commies, all though both for very different reasons, however still commie condoned.
If the U.S. is removed from Okinawa it would create a security vacuum with the commies rushing in to fill the void to the disadvantage of Japan. Before injecting the USA perhaps the Okinawans may want to support Prime Minister Abe’s attempt to revise Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution and redefine the Japanese military.
Disturbing aspects of the anti-American bases protest in Okinawa are signs written in Korean. Huh? Okinawa is in Japan, not Korea, so why signs in Koreans? It is easy to dismiss them as being affiliated with the Communist in North Korea and Dear Leader of the Hermit Kingdom.
One particular sign had a web address written across the bottom:
www.spark946.org
It is a website for the group “Solidarity for Peace and Reunification of Korea.” Note of interest: Recently United States Ambassador Mark Lippert was attacked in Seoul, South Korea by Kim Ki-jong. It is reported the slasher Kim Ki-jong belongs to a reunification group.
Note to Koreans both North and South: The United States military is on the Korean peninsular with the approval of the South Korean government. If you feel the American military is an impediment to reunification, instead of slashing U.S. Ambassadors or protesting on Okinawa, just ask the South Korean government to send the Yankees home – Yankee go home.

As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee thought her country was "the best on the planet." It wasn't until the famine of the 90s that she began to wonder. She escaped the country at 14, to begin a life in hiding, as a refugee in China. Hers is a harrowing, personal tale of survival and hope -- and a powerful reminder of those who face constant danger, even when the border is far behind.

An interview of Sogang university students in South Korea on what they think about dating foreigners, plastic surgery and beauty standards. Thanks for giving me all the questions through Instagram. As I told you before, I’m not generalizing Koreans and our thoughts. Please don’t take it too seriously and enjoy it!
Questions:
- What girl groups or K-pop stars are you interested in these days?
- What part of a woman is the most important?
- Who do you prefer? Younger or older women?
- Is there any difference between a girl you date and a girl you marry?
- Do you care about your girlfriend's nationality or race?
- What is your idea of the perfect face?
- What do you think about girls who do plastic surgery?
- Do you like girls with makeup or a natural face?
- What kind of clothes do you want your girlfriend to wear?
- Do you think that being skinny is important to guys?
- The number of girls who are doing Brazilian waxes is increasing. Do you like girls who do that, or just natural girls?

Find out why a small number of North Korean defectors are deciding to return to their repressive homeland? About 25,000 North Koreans have escaped their homeland and resettled in South Korea over the past 20 years. 5 Things North Koreans Are Made to Believe. Kim Jong Un tries to make the people in North Korea believe some crazy stuff. Crazy propaganda like you have never seen in before. We wonder how many North Koreans actually believe any of this!
5. Kim no poop!
An official biography on the North Korea state website claimed that Kim Jong-Un does not defecate. Anyone who has seen 'The Interview' knows what's up ;)
4. Hamburgers
North Korean newspaper Minju Joson once reported that Kim Jong Il had invented something called the "double bread with meat" and created factories to produce them in order to feed his students and teachers. Given North Korea's anti-American stance it wasn't politic to admit they were in fact hamburgers.
3. How Americans Live
While many countries around the world aren't crazy about the perceived lifestyle of Americans, North Korea takes it to a new level. In a video, they depicted America as a country that subsist of eating snow, and lives in tents, made by the kind government of North Korea. The government claims that all Americans buy guns, just so they can kill each other and that they use children as target practice.
2. South Korea
The totalitarian leadership in North Korea doesn't want its people heading for greener pastures, so they've propagated some wild rumors about South Korea. North Koreans are led to believe that South Koreans camp out by the border waiting to shoot anyone who dares to cross the border. In fact, North Korea heavily guards their borders to prevent their people from leaving.
1. Supernatural Birth
According to North Korea Media Outlets, and Kim Jong-Il's official biography, he was born at the highest point of Korea, Mount Paekdu. "Legend" has it that he was born underneath a rainbow, and that he could walk within days. Preceding his amazing birth was a swallow who told the masses of his coming. In fact, he was likely born in Russia while his father was commanding a soviet army.

Dozens of South Korean citizens protested on Monday outside Cheongwadae, the presidential residence of the country, as leaders from China, Japan and South Korea met.
They held signs saying “Abe, go back!” and “No to Japan’s collective self-defense bill”.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, South Korean President Park Chung-hee and Japanese Prime Minister Shizo Abe held talks here at Cheongwadae on Monday morning. This is the first time in three and a half years that leaders of the three countries held talks together.
The last meeting was held in May 2012. Japan’s refusal to acknowledge its war crime against the Chinese and South Korean people, especially its attitude toward sex slaves, also known as comfort women, in the Second World War, has worsened its relationships with the other two countries. Moreover, Abe’s push for the country to pass the self-defense bill has also raised protests at home and abroad.
The three leaders met on Sunday to bring the relationship back to normal. But no progress has been made in regard to the key issues scarring the relations.

Koreans and Chinese are the people or the citizens of these respective Asian countries. Of late, there have been many reports of hatred, hostility and violence against people of Korean origin in China raising concerns about the safety of people of Korean descent in China. There are many people in the west who cannot differentiate between a Korean and a Chinese because of their similar looks. However despite similarities, there are many differences between a Korean and a Chinese that will be enumerated in this article.
Koreans
Koreans are citizens of both Koreas namely South Korea and North Korea. Taken together, the total population of the Koreans, including those living in other Asian countries such as Japan and China, is about 85 million. Today’s Koreans are believed to be the descendants of the people that belonged to ancient Korean Peninsula. These were migrants who arrived in the peninsula from Siberia and Manchuria. Koreans speak Korean language that makes use of Hangul, its writing system. This system of writing was developed very late in the 15th century. Till then, Koreans made use of Chinese characters.
Korean people are known across the world as being dynamic and having a lot of endurance. They have a great sense of humor that is reflected, not just in their nature, but also in the nation’s rich art and culture.
Chinese
Chinese is a term that is used to refer to both the people of this giant Asian country as well as the language spoken by the people of China. China is a very large and very populous East Asian country with 22 provinces. Taiwan, an independent country that is also called Republic of China, is claimed by China to be its 23rd province. It is not just the citizens of the mainland China but also Hong Kong, Macau and even Taiwan that are labeled Chinese. All people, having Han Chinese ethnicity, are labeled Chinese though there are in total 56 ethnic groups comprising Chinese population. However, Han Chinese ethnicity makes up nearly 92% of the population.
China is not just one of the largest countries in the world; it is also the most populous with a population of more than 1.3 billion. Chinese people are considered hardworking an industrious. They have a conservative approach towards life and are in general very easy going.
What is the difference between Koreans and Chinese?
• Chinese people are made up of more than 56 ethnicities, but 92% of the Chinese belong to Han Chinese ethnicity.
• Korean people are the descendants of migrants who arrived in the Korean peninsula from Siberia and Manchuria.
• Korean people speak Korean language, whereas Chinese speak mandarin and other dialects spoken in China.
• Korean writing system called Hangul came up in 15th century and till then Koreans made use of Chinese characters.
• Korean people have higher cheek bones than Chinese people.
• Chinese have a flatter face and smaller eyes than Korean people.
• Koreans have slightly less slanted eyes than Chinese.

Korean/Nat
Seventeen North Koreans, all from a single family, arrived in Seoul Monday from Hong Kong after escaping their impoverished communist country.
The defectors, including five children and one pregnant woman, arrived in Hong Kong on November 23 after a 27-day undercover journey through China along what is becoming a common escape route for North Koreans.
It was the largest single defection of North Koreans since the 1950-53 Korean War.
It was a flight to freedom ... the last leg of a journey towards a new life.
Exhausted from their trek -- but the family couldn't hide their excitement.
Kim Kyung-ho and his family arrived at the Kimpo International Airport via Hong Kong.
Having recently suffered a stroke, Kim was led out of the plane aided by his son and his wife.
Although he was unable to speak, with the world's media waiting, other members of his family briefly spoke about their escape.
SOUNDBITE:
"There were a lot of difficulties coming here. But we met fellow Koreans living in China who helped us. With their help, all 17 of us came together and finally arrived here."
SUPERCAPTION: Choi Hyun Shil, Wife of Kim Hyung Ho
Kim returns to South Korea after 46 years away. He was forced to join the North Korean army during the Korean War and has not seen his family since.
His only remaining relative is an older brother, Kim Kyung Tae, 70, who has been living in South Korea since their separation.
After decades apart, it was an emotional reunion.
Kim Kyung Ho asked his older brother where his other siblings were and the older Kim told him that they had all passed away.
Tears followed.
SOUNDBITE:
"It's like a dream come true and words cannot express it. Our family is just happy for the new addition. Our father passed away and it seems like he's come back to life."
SUPERCAPTION: Kim In Ok, Niece of Kim Hyung Ho
South Korean media has speculated that the 17 defectors may prompt a mass exodus of North Koreans fleeing their economically hard-pressed country.
South Korean officials said a policeman in the group, who was earlier reported to have served as a guide, is also a member of the same family.
Officials identified him as 30-year-old Choe Yong Ho.
He is the cousin of Choe Yong Do, an elderly Korean-American man living in the United States, who earlier said he helped arrange and finance the family's defection.
The escapees include the senior Choe's daughter and her husband, their sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters.
The North Koreans left their home city of Hoeryong near the Chinese border on October 26.
Once in China, they were led by a guide they had hired before the defection.
Their escape route across China was a path used recently by several other North Korean defectors.
In May, two North Koreans trekked the same route to defect to Seoul.
After the emotional reunions, the family will undergo a medical check-up and be questioned about their escape.
They already have told Hong Kong officials that they fled North Korea because they were hungry and wanted food.
About 150 North Koreans have defected to South Korea in the past three years, including about 30 so far this year.
The communist country's chronic economic problems have been compounded by devastating floods both this year and last year, forcing the country to turn to outside aid for the first time.

CHINA: BEIJING: REACTION TO NORTH KOREANS DEFECTION TO THE SOUTH

China, North Korea and South Korea anxiously maneuvered Friday to resolve how to handle the defection of a high-ranking North Korean official.
Hwang Jang Yop, a Central Committee member of the ruling Workers' Party and confidant of leader Kim Jung Il, walked into the South Korean consulate in Beijing on Wednesday and asked for asylum.
Eager to get the inside story about their secretive rivals in Pyongyang, the South Koreans pressed China to let them quickly whisk Hwang out of the country.
The North insisted Hwang had been kidnapped and threatened unspecified retaliation if that was so. It demanded that China take "appropriate action."
Chinese police widened the security zone around the South Korean consulate in Beijing, where Hwang Jang Yop spent a second night.
The move came after a dozen North Koreans unsuccessfully tried, for the second time, to walk past police lines late Thursday.
North Koreans sat smoking in Mercedes with shaded windows outside the South Korean consulate Friday morning.
The confrontations were minor. But they were a reminder of the North's unpredictable, often violent tactics.
By walking into the South Korean Consulate in Beijing, North Korean defector Hwang Jang Yop created a diplomatic uproar.
Beijing must now decide whether to force Hwang Jang Yop back to North Korea or let him flee to the South.
Eager to get inside information about their secretive rivals in the North, the South Koreans pressed China to let them quickly whisk Hwang out of the country.
But the North insisted Hwang had been kidnapped and threatened unspecified retaliation if that was so.
South Korean Embassy spokesman Chang Moon-ik told reporters Friday that Hwang is in good care at their compound.

"We are now in negotiation with the Chinese government for Hwang Jang Yop defection case. Mr. Hwang is still in custody in our embassy compound. He is in good care, he reads a book at day time, and he sleeps very well at night."

Hwang was on his way home from a meeting in Japan when he defected along with Kim Duk Hong, 59, the president of a North Korean trading firm in Beijing.
Hwang is known as a key theoretician behind the country's philosophy of self-reliance, an ideology that has suffered as two years of floods devastated North Korea's food supply.

STORYLINE
A delegation of the Commission to Help North Korean Refugees (CNKR) rallied in front of the United Nations Wednesday, demanding that the world body officially recognize North Korean defectors as refugees.
Such a classification would prevent China and other countries from returning North Koreans to their country, where it is reported that they are arrested and sent to labour camps or prison.
China currently treats the roughly 100,000 North Koreans who have flee the country as "infiltrators" or "economic migrants," even though the UNHCR recognizes them as refugees.
But according to the CNKR, most North Koreans flee their country to avoid starvation and oppression.
Most of the refugees are scattered about and live miserably in the neighboring countries under the threat of coercive repatriation.
The CNKR maintains that this classification by the Chinese violates the 1951 Geneva Convention, of which it is a signatory.
The CNKR collected 11-million signatures for a petition that they submitted to Gillian Sorenson, the Assistant Secretary General for External Relations.
The delegation from South Korea included former Korean Ambassador to the U-N Park Keun, Seoul Mayor Kim San-chul, and National Assemblyman Kim Young-jin, among others.
The group also plans to travel to Washington to meet high-ranking politicians and government officials.
In Sook Jang fled North Korea to China in 1991 after spending over seven years in a labour camp living under miserable conditions.
Of her four children, three managed to escape with her while the fourth was detained by police, and hasn't been heard of since.

She says she escaped not because she wanted to live in China but because she could not longer live in North Korea.

A group of 24 North Korean asylum seekers hiding out on South Korean embassy grounds in China left Beijing on Sunday, ending a month-long standoff over their fates.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed the group flew out of the country on Sunday evening, but declined to say what its destination was.
Two other North Koreans who had been holed up in the Canadian embassy also left China on Sunday afternoon, according an embassy spokesperson who declined to give further details.
A South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the North Koreans would fly to a third country before traveling on to South Korea.
China has a treaty with its North Korean ally requiring it to send refugees back to their poverty-stricken homeland, where they face almost certain imprisonment and torture. However, Beijing has not done so in cases that become public, possibly for fear of provoking a backlash abroad.
The first asylum seeker entered the visa office on May 23 and others followed alone or in small groups, despite barbed wire and extra policemen posted by Beijing.
At least 38 North Koreans fleeing starvation and repression at home have been allowed by China to leave for the South after seeking refuge in other foreign embassies or consulates.
They included a family of five who were held by police after bring dragged out of a Japanese consulate. A North Korean man who was taken into custody by Chinese authorities after being dragged out of the visa office on June 13 was also given permission to leave.

Several more North Koreans have sought shelter in South Korean diplomatic compounds in Beijing in recent days, according to a South Korean embassy official.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, could not confirm how many they were and when or how they had arrived, but said negotiations to get them out of China were underway.
Officials in Seoul and China's Foreign Ministry declined comment.
Dozens of North Koreans fleeing famine and repression in their isolated communist nation have sought refuge in various foreign embassies and consulates in China since March.
This has led the Chinese authorities to step up security measures in all of Beijing's diplomatic areas. Surrounded by newly laid barbed-wire fences, embassies are now under 24 hour surveillance by the Chinese military and plain-clothed police officers.
The situation poses a delicate diplomatic problem for China, which is North Korea's only major ally, as it is required by a treaty signed by the two countries to repatriate asylum-seekers.
Defectors who are returned to North Korea reportedly face imprisonment and torture, and, possibly for fear of risking an outcry from the international community, Beijing has not kept to the treaty in asylum cases that become public.
China ended a month-long diplomatic standoff in June by allowing the departure of 25 North Koreans who had sought refuge in the South Korean and Canadian embassies.
Earlier this month, the Chinese authorities allowed three North Korean defectors who forced their way into the South Korean embassy to leave for Seoul after intense negotiations.

It is still not clear what will happen to the 15 North Koreans who sought refuge on Tuesday in a German school in the Chinese capital.
Chinese and German officials say they have reached agreement on what to do, but have not released details of that agreement.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan appeared to indicate an impending resolution to the incident that began on Tuesday when the group scrambled over a wall and into the school compound.
There was no immediate movement of people or vehicles at the school to indicate the North Koreans might be leaving.
Since March, scores of North Korean asylum seekers have been allowed to leave for South Korea via other countries after taking refuge in foreign embassies and consulates in China.
But Kong said on Thursday that the school did not have the same diplomatic status as an embassy.
On Friday one of the school's students said he hoped the North Koreans would be helped and not sent back to North Korea where he said they might be punished.

German diplomats are negotiating with China over the fates of 15 North Koreans holed up in a German government-run school in Beijing.
South Korea's Beijing embassy has declined to comment on the 15, who may be seeking asylum in Seoul.
German and Chinese diplomats are meeting to discuss the 15, who remain out of sight in the German school, three days after leaping a wall into the compound.
Life just outside the red school wall goes on as usual for most residents of Beijing, unaware of the North Korean occupants in the German-run facility. Security around the school was low key, with only a few uniformed police present at the school gate.
Officials say the school, which cancelled classes on Wednesday, will remain closed until Monday at the earliest.
The 15, who jumped a wall to enter the compound on Tuesday afternoon, have been provided with blankets, water and food, according to an German embassy spokesperson who was speaking on condition of anonymity. He wouldn't say whether the group had asked for asylum or to go to South Korea.
The North Koreans seen entering the compound were mostly men and women in their 20s and 30s. One man appeared to be in his 50s or 60s. There were no children.

At least 15 people said to be North Koreans were holed up Tuesday in a complex in Beijing, that houses a German government-run school, after climbing over a wall and being chased through a diplomatic apartment building.
The group climbed over a wall to enter the compound on a busy street in northeastern Beijing as students were leaving school for the day.
Reporters watching from outside the compound could see them walking through the glassed-in hallways of a nine-story apartment building.
A guard chased them out and the group sat on an outdoor staircase of the school, which is next to the building.
Most of the men and women appeared to be in their 20s and 30s. There were no children. One man appeared to be in his 50s or 60s.
A woman who answered the phone at the school said the people were North Koreans. The woman, who wouldn't give her name, said the compound has 45 apartments for German diplomats and employees of the school.
The incident came a day after Chinese guards blocked 12 people also said to be North Koreans who tried to use a ladder to enter a building that houses the Ecuadorean Embassy. The guards punched and kicked the would-be refugees and at least eight were detained.
A police official at the scene, Zhang Wei, said police didn't know whether they would try to remove the group from the compound.
Dozens of North Koreans have been allowed to leave for South Korea since March after seeking asylum in foreign embassies and consulates in China.
That may have prompted would-be refugees to pick less heavily guarded foreign compounds such as the German school.

Second, we have to be in accordance with international law, and third we must take into account humanitarian considerations."

STORYLINE:
China has announced an agreement with Germany on the fate of 15 North Korean asylum seekers who jumped over a wall into a Beijing compound housing a German-run school.
Neither side would say what was to happen to the North Koreans.
But the statement by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan appeared to indicate an impending resolution to the incident.
In similar recent cases China has allowed North Korean asylum seekers to go to South Korea via a third country.
There was no immediate movement of people or vehicles at the school that could indicate the North Koreans might be leaving.
Chinese police have guarded the compound since the incursions on Tuesday but have not attempted to remove the North Koreans, who have been housed in a school room and given food and water.
However, Kong said the German school compound, which also houses apartments for staff, did not have diplomatic status like embassies or diplomatic missions.
Under international treaty diplomatic missions are considered a country's sovereign territory that police aren't supposed to enter without permission.

This video shows the events leading to the Korean War, conduct of the war from 1950 to 1953, and cessation of hostilities in July 1953.
The original title of this video is: Army In Action -- Episode X -- The Cobra Strikes. The documentary is a part of "The Big Picture" series produced by the U.S. Army.
About the Korean War:
The Korean War (25 June 1950 -- 27 July 1953) was a war between the Republic of Korea (South Korea), supported by the United Nations, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), supported by the People's Republic of China. It was primarily the result of the political division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War at the end of World War II. The Korean Peninsula was ruled by the Empire of Japan from 1910 until the end of World War II. Following the surrender of the Empire of Japan in September 1945, American administrators divided the peninsula along the 38th parallel, with U.S. military forces occupying the southern half and Soviet military forces occupying the northern half.
The failure to hold free elections throughout the Korean Peninsula in 1948 deepened the division between the two sides; the North established a communist government, while the South established a nominally democratic government. The 38th parallel increasingly became a political border between the two Korean states. Although reunification negotiations continued in the months preceding the war, tension intensified. Cross-border skirmishes and raids at the 38th Parallel persisted. The situation escalated into open warfare when North Korean forces invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950. In 1950, the Soviet Union boycotted the United Nations Security Council, in protest at representation of China by the Kuomintang/Republic of China government, which had taken refuge in Taiwan following defeat in the Chinese Civil War. In the absence of a dissenting voice from the Soviet Union, who could have vetoed it, the United States and other countries passed a Security Council resolution authorizing military intervention in Korea.
The United States of America provided 88% of the 341,000 international soldiers which aided South Korean forces in repelling the invasion, with twenty other countries of the United Nations offering assistance. Suffering severe casualties within the first two months, the defenders were pushed back to a small area in the south of the Korean Peninsula, known as the Pusan perimeter. A rapid U.N. counter-offensive then drove the North Koreans past the 38th Parallel and almost to the Yalu River, when the People's Republic of China (PRC) entered the war on the side of North Korea. Chinese intervention forced the Southern-allied forces to retreat behind the 38th Parallel. While not directly committing forces to the conflict, the Soviet Union provided material aid to both the North Korean and Chinese armies. The fighting ended on 27 July 1953, when the armistice agreement was signed. The agreement restored the border between the Koreas near the 38th Parallel and created the Korean Demilitarized Zone, a 2.5-mile (4.0 km)-wide fortified buffer zone between the two Korean nations. Minor incidents continue to the present day.
From a military science perspective, it combined strategies and tactics of World War I and World War II: it began with a mobile campaign of swift infantry attacks followed by air bombing raids, but became a static trench war by July 1951.
In the United States of America, the war was initially described by President Harry S. Truman as a "police action" as it was conducted under the auspices of the United Nations. It has been referred to as "The Forgotten War" or "The Unknown War" because of the lack of public attention it received both during and after the war, and in relation to the global scale of World War II, which preceded it, and the subsequent angst of the Vietnam War, which succeeded it. In South Korea, the war is usually referred to as "625" or the 6--2--5 Upheaval (yook-i-o dongnan), reflecting the date of its commencement on 25 June. In North Korea, the war is officially referred to as the Fatherland Liberation War or alternatively the "Chosǒn War". In the People's Republic of China the war is officially called the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, although the term "Chaoxian War" is also used in unofficial contexts.

But the Hongs meet a new crisis when former prosecutor Bong, imprisoned for manipulating evidences in the second installment, is released and prepares for a revenge on the Hongs, who largely contributed to his conviction.
Bong, along with the help of another criminal gang come up with an idea to pay back the Hongs. He poisons the products from Hong’s brand which causes the family to be on the verge of going out of business. But as Bong’s simple plot succeeds, the Hongs easily tackle the crisis in the end. Hyeonseo Lee was just seventeen when she fled North Korea. She found herself in China, alone and with no identity. Her mother’s first words over the telephone to her lost daughter were “Don’t come back”.
In her memoir The Girl with Seven Names, Lee recounts her life inside the secretive and brutal communist regime: the ‘self-criticism’ classes in primary school; forcibly joining the Youth Corps aged nine; and witnessing public executions of people who had not mourned enough for the death of Kim Il-Sung. She describes her escape and brave efforts to persuade her mother and brother to join her.
We are pleased to welcome Hyeonseo Lee to the Frontline Club to share her insight into growing up North Korea, the story of her escape and how she went on to rebuild her life and discover her identity. She will be talking to Paul French, an author and a widely published analyst and commentator on Asia, Asian politics and current affairs. He is author of North Korea: State of Paranoia and the international bestseller Midnight in Peking.
Hyeonseo Lee lived in North Korea until her escape in 1997. She arrived in Seoul in 2008, where she currently lives, and has recently graduated from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. As a student, she was a Young Leader at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a journalist at the Ministry for Unification and a selected member of the ‘English for the Future’ programme at the British Embassy in Seoul. She is an international campaigner for North Korean human rights and refugee issues and speaks on the subject all over the world, including at the UN and the Oslo Freedom Forum.

With one of the lowest birth rates in the world, South Korea is in danger of disappearing by the end of the millennium. If the situation stays as it is, South Koreans are predicted to become extinct by 2750. Because of the rapidly aging population, elderly prostitutes known as "Bacchus ladies" have cornered a number of public parks as their working areas. Meanwhile, South Korean kids are living with their families well into their 20s—as a result, an entire economy of sex motels has sprung up to give kids a place to fool around outside the watchful eyes of their parents.
We sent Matt Shea to investigate this generational crisis, which led him to Seoul's red-light district, a pre-wedding photo shoot on the set of a Korean soap opera, and an erotic sculpture park on South Korea's "honeymoon island."

Train travel from China to Cult Korea: Beijing-Pyongyang. May 2010. See Videos 2, 3 and 4 for the walking tour of NK. This was a propaganda tour that brings tourists to the country's showcase cities and fertile regions. These videos give people thinking about visiting NK an overview of what they will see there (A variety of tours are offered but itineraries are often similar). These videos are neither truncated nor narrated. Footage is exclusive to regions in N. Korea where the elite population resides. Therefore you will not see how the majority of N. Koreans live, with oppression, famine, lack of human rights and medical care, or the most unfortunate 150,000 political victims living in Soviet Gulag/Nazi Concentration style camps.
South Korea maintains a cowardly and disturbing indifference to the large scale atrocities occurring in North Korea. In the 60 years since the division of the Korean Peninsula, South Korweakens have lost their sense of unity and urgency.
S. Korea has overwhelming military and non-military options if it wanted the Northern regime to collapse. It does not need to wait forever on the the vastly useless and toothless UN to solve South Korea's problem. Yet, the SK government and inhabitants are shockingly content with maintaining their segregation due to the massive financial costs of rebuilding the North's infrastructure and rehabilitating a mentally/physically stunted and uneducated population. Even though the reunification costs increases each year, the Holocaust stays alive because information connected South Korea ignores the suffering when they are morally responsible and fully capable of taking back their own country.
The S. Korean government downplays the N. Korean human rights abuses and over-hypes North Korea's military capacity to discourage citizens from talking about the necessity of freeing Korea. South Korea has 50 times greater GDP and generations more advance military, yet cowers to a starving, impoverished country with antique armaments.
N. Korean refugees are not warmly received in S. Korean society. South Korea does not voice opposition to China's illegal forced repatriation of N. Korean refugees, of which there may be over 100,000. When men, women and children are repatriated back to North Korea, they face cruel punishment and imprisonment, or if they had communicated with Westerners or religious groups, they are tortured and/or executed. Yet, this does not concern or alarm the prosperous South Koreans. North Korean lives are dispensable to them.
And this is all great news for tourists wanting to see a Stalinist/Maoist country in the 21st century. So no need to rush, you still have plenty of time to visit. The UN is powerless, and South Korea is spineless. If you want to help North Korean civilians, I recommend visiting HRNK (The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea) and the UK Manna Mission of Europe (which operates bakeries to feed NK children).

South Korea is home to a thriving $20 billion private education industry. But 15 hour school days and academic pressure on students are beginning to take its toll, and the authorities are finally taking notice.
"You get compared and because everyone does so well I feel pressured to do better. There's a lot of psychological pressure", says one Korean student. Here, making it to the top has become a national obsession. Schools stay open until 11pm, whilst half of teenagers report suicidal thoughts, mostly blaming school pressure. 19-year-old Jae-woo describes the stresses that accompany study for exams: "There's no me... I can't do things I like. When I'm prepping for exams, who I am just gets lost". Feeding off the system are entrepreneurs like Cha Gil-yong, a celebrity teacher who dons wigs and wacky costumes in online lectures. At any one time 300,000 students are logged into his website. "I try to entertain them and keep them from nodding off by wearing these wigs. Students really enjoy it", he says. Now, authorities are finally realising that the price of success may be too great, and are sending out patrols to enforce school closing times. Yet top performing students are even beginning to have plastic surgery in order to improve their job prospects. In a country where failure is not an option, how far will students go for success?
