Tsunami-like storm surge wave hits Giresun; off the southeastern coast of Black Sea.
A powerful storm in the Black Sea this week swamped a town off the coast of Turkey. The storm started in the morning of Wednesday and hit the Black Sea province of Giresun, triggering flash floods in many parts of the province that damaged cars on the Black Sea Highway and a number of buildings close to the coast. Nurettin Canikli (born May 15, 1960 in Alucra, Giresun Province) is Minister of Customs and Trade of Turkey and a Member of Parliament for Giresun of the ruling Justice and Development Party.[1][2]
After finishing the İmam Hatip school in Giresun, he studied Economics at the Faculty of Political Science, Ankara University graduating with a Bachelors's degree. Canikli obtained a Master's degree in Finance from University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.[1][2]
He worked in various positions in the Ministry of Finance.[2] He was a columnist at the daily Yeni Şafak.[1]

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli has said that those involved in corruption within the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) are in a panic as the June 7 general election approaches.
Speaking at a rally held by his party in Giresun province on Thursday, Bahçeli said that the ruling party is using religious symbols and places, such as the Kaaba, the headscarf, Jerusalem, the Quran and the Religious Affairs Directorate, during election campaign rallies in order to try to garner more votes in the elections.
"Those who engaged in corruption [in reference to the Dec. 17, 2013 corruption scandal that implicated a number of AK Party politicians, including former ministers] wave our holy book, the Quran, in squares [referring to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has repeatedly waved the Quran during his recent addresses to the public]. These thieves rely on exploitation of the religion. One of them [in reference to top AK Party official Yasin Aktay] went insane and sang a religious song, sung to praise the Prophet Muhammad, in order to praise Erdoğan. They have trampled all political principles."
Bahçeli also criticized President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for conducting an election campaign for the AK Party, holding campaign events under the guise of “opening ceremonies” for facilities, and he went on to say: "Erdoğan is at the center of all political discussion."
He added that as the time for the election nears, Erdoğan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu are panicked and said: "The envisaged decline in the support for the AK Party has turned into a nightmare for Davutoğlu. This has led them to engage in the abuse of the religion at every occasion."

The storm started in the morning of Wednesday and hit the Black Sea province of Giresun, triggering flash floods in many parts of the province that damaged cars on the Black Sea Highway and a number of buildings close to the coast.
Giresun's coastal areas were badly affected by the storm, which flooded Atatürk Boulevard, Port and Gemilerçekeği neighborhoods. The police station, firehouse and other buildings on Atatürk Boulevard were damaged, and cars stuck in traffic were unable to move.

Giresun Province (Turkish: Giresun ili) is a province of Turkey on the Black Sea coast. Its adjacent provinces are Trabzon to the east, Gümüşhane to the south-west, Erzincan to the south, Sivas to the south-east, and Ordu to the west. The provincial capital is Giresun.
Giresun is an agricultural region of great natural beauty, especially in the highlands. The lower areas near the Black Sea coast are Turkey's largest producer of hazelnuts; a Giresun folk song tells "I will not eat a single hazelnut, unless you are by my side", while another tells of a lover shot dead under a hazelnut tree The higher mountain areas are forest and pasture and in places there is mining of copper, zinc, iron and other metals. The mountain villages are remote, with poor roads and little else in the way of infrastructure. And the hillsides are too steep for agriculture also, so for example cornbread is the traditional meal, as they cannot grow wheat. Life here is hard and in the past many people have left to find jobs in Turkey's larger cities or abroad.

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli has said that those involved in corruption within the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) are in a panic as the June 7 general election approaches.
Speaking at a rally held by his party in Giresun province on Thursday, Bahçeli said that the ruling party is using religious symbols and places, such as the Kaaba, the headscarf, Jerusalem, the Quran and the Religious Affairs Directorate, during election campaign rallies in order to try to garner more votes in the elections.
"Those who engaged in corruption [in reference to the Dec. 17, 2013 corruption scandal that implicated a number of AK Party politicians, including former ministers] wave our holy book, the Quran, in squares [referring to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has repeatedly waved the Quran during his recent addresses to the public]. These thieves rely on exploitation of the religion. One of them [in reference to top AK Party official Yasin Aktay] went insane and sang a religious song, sung to praise the Prophet Muhammad, in order to praise Erdoğan. They have trampled all political principles."
Bahçeli also criticized President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for conducting an election campaign for the AK Party, holding campaign events under the guise of “opening ceremonies” for facilities, and he went on to say: "Erdoğan is at the center of all political discussion."
He added that as the time for the election nears, Erdoğan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu are panicked and said: "The envisaged decline in the support for the AK Party has turned into a nightmare for Davutoğlu. This has led them to engage in the abuse of the religion at every occasion."

The storm started in the morning of Wednesday and hit the Black Sea province of Giresun, triggering flash floods in many parts of the province that damaged cars on the Black Sea Highway and a number of buildings close to the coast.
Giresun's coastal areas were badly affected by the storm, which flooded Atatürk Boulevard, Port and Gemilerçekeği neighborhoods. The police station, firehouse and other buildings on Atatürk Boulevard were damaged, and cars stuck in traffic were unable to move.

Sayın Valimiz Hasan Karahan’ın himayelerinde Giresun Turizm Altyapı Hizmet Birliği koordinesinde düzenlenen METEX Turizm Fuarının açılışı bugün Jasmin Otelde yapıldı.
Orta Doğu ve Kuzey Afrika ülkelerinden (Bahreyn, Katar, Kuveyt, Suudi Arabistan, Dubai) seçkin seyahat acenteleri, tur operatörleri, turizm profesyonelleri ve medya mensuplarından oluşan yaklaşık 50 kişiden oluşan heyetinde katıldığı METEK Fuarının açılışı halkoyunları gösterilerinin ardından açılış kurdelesinin Vali Karahan ve beraberindekiler tarafından kesilmesiyle başladı.
Tören öncesi basın mensuplarına kısa bir açıklama yapan Vali Karahan, “Ortadoğunun çeşitli ülkelerinden misafirlerin Fuarda bulunduğunu belirterek,”Metex fuarı kapsamında bir fuar da ilimizde düzenleniyor. Bildiğiniz gibi artan oranlarda bölgemizde arap turistleri görüyoruz. Daha da artacağını düşünüyorum. Bu konuda bizde üzerimize düşeni yapıyoruz. Giresun olarak da avantajlı olduğumuzu düşünüyoruz. Bu pastadan en büyük payı almak için gayretlerimiz de devam ediyor. DOKAP’ın öncülüğünde Giresun Valiliğinin himayelerinde DOKA’nında destekleriyle hep beraber inşallah Giresun’u uçuracağız. Giresun bakir bir alan. Turizm anlamında çok fazla yeni yeni gelişmeler taşıyoruz. Coğrafyamız çok fazla tahrip edilmiş değil, inşallah böyle kalır. Dolayısıyla avantajlıyız. Orta bir yerdeyiz. Her tarafa çok yakınız. Trabzon’a, Ordu’ya, Samsun’a Rize’ye bunlar da bizim için avantaj. Yaylalarımız, denizimiz, açılacak havaalanımız bir avantaj olacak. Hepsi bir araya geldiğinde Giresun’un folkloruyla, kültürüyle insanının sıcaklığıyla gerçekten iddialı yere yükseleceğimize inanıyoruz.” şeklinde konuştu.
Fuarın açılış konuşmasını yapan Mercan Turizm Firması Sahibi Dr. Cüneyt Mengü ilki Ankara’da olmak üzere İstanbul ve Bursa’nın ardından dördüncüsü düzenlenen Metex Turizm fuarının Giresun’da yapıldığını belirterek Fuarın ilimizi Arap acentalara ve tur şirketlerine tanıtmak için fırsat olduğunu söyledi.
Türkiye Turizm Otelcilik Birliği Başkanı (TUROB) Timur Bayındır da ülkemiz turizminin önemli parçasını arapların oluşturduğunu belirterek, turist sayısını arttırmak ve ülkemize daha fazla döviz girdisi sağlamak amacıyla düzenlenen fuarda emeği geçenlere teşekkür etti.
DOKA Genel Sekreteri Çetin Oktay Kaldırım ve DOKAP Başkanı Ekrem Yüce de konuklara “hoş geldiniz” diyerek ilimiz ve bölge turizmi ile ilgili bilgiler verdi.
Törenin kapanış konuşmasını yapan Vali Karahan, Arap konukları selamlayarak, “Arap konuklarımızı turist olarak değil misafir olarak görüyoruz. İnşallah bu ve benzeri organizasyonlarla ilişkilerimiz daha da gelişecek” dedi.
Konuşmaların ardından fuarda emeği geçenlere Başta Sayın Valimiz olmak üzere plaket verildi.
Açılış töreninin ardından yabancı konuklar Giresun ve Doğu Karadeniz Bölgesi otelcileri ve turizm profesyonelleri ile B2B ortamında bir araya geldiler.
