And the man at the heart of this empire was Tokugawa Ieyasu, a warlord who ruled with absolute control. This period is explored through myriad voices-- the Shogun, the Samurai, the Geisha

The history of Japan includes the history of the islands of Japan and the Japanese people, spanning the ancient history of the region to the modern history of Japan as a nation state. Following the last ice age, around 12,000 BC, the rich ecosystem of the Japanese archipelago fostered human development. The earliest-known pottery found in Japan belongs to the Jōmon period. The first known written reference to Japan is in the brief information given in Book of Han in the 1st century AD. The main cultural and religious influences came from China. The current Imperial House emerged in the sixth century and the first permanent imperial capital was founded in 710 at Heijō-kyō (modern Nara), which became a center of Buddhist art, religion and culture. The development of a strong centralized government culminated in the establishment of a new imperial capital at Heian-kyō (modern Kyoto) and the Heian period is considered a golden age of classical Japanese culture. Over the following centuries the power of the reigning emperor and the court nobility gradually declined and the once centralized state became increasingly fractured. By the time of the fifteenth century political power was subdivided into several hundred local units, or so called "domains" controlled by local daimyō, each with his own force of samurai warriors. After a long period of civil war, Tokugawa Ieyasu completed the unification of Japan and was appointed shogun by the emperor in 1603. He distributed the conquered land among his supporters, and set up his "bakufu" (literally "tent office" i.e. military rule) at Edo (modern Tokyo) while the nominal sovereign, the emperor, continued to reside in the old capital of Kyoto. The Edo period was prosperous and peaceful. Japan terminated the Christian missions and cut off almost all contact with the outside world.
In the 1860s the shogunate came to an end, power was returned to the emperor and the Meiji period began. The new national leadership systematically ended feudalism and transformed an isolated, underdeveloped island country, into a world power that closely followed Western models. Democracy was problematic, because Japan's powerful military was semi-independent and overruled—or assassinated—civilians in the 1920s and 1930s. The military invaded Manchuria in 1931 and escalated the conflict to all-out war on China in 1937. Japan controlled the coast and major cities and set up puppet regimes, but was unable to entirely defeat China. Its attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 led to war with the United States and its allies. After a series of naval victories by mid-1942, Japan's military forces were overextended and its industrial base was unable to provide the needed ships, armaments, and oil. But even with the navy sunk and the main cities destroyed by U.S. air attacks, the military held out until August 1945 when the twin shock of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet invasion of Manchuria made it possible for the emperor to force the military to surrender.
The U.S. occupied Japan until 1952. Under the supervision of the U.S. occupation forces a new constitution was drafted and enacted in 1947 that transformed Japan into a parliamentary monarchy. After 1955, Japan enjoyed very high economic growth rates, and became a world economic powerhouse, especially in engineering, automobiles and electronics with a highly developed infrastructure, a very high standard of living and the highest life expectancy in the world. Emperor Shōwa died in 1989 and his son Emperor Akihito ascended the throne marking the beginning of a new era. Since the 1990s economic stagnation has been a major issue, with an earthquake and tsunami in 2011 causing massive economic dislocations and loss of nuclear power.

In the early 16th century, Japan is a warlike society ruled by samurai and their daimyo warlords. When Portuguese merchants arrive in 1543, they are the first Europeans to set foot in Japan. Missionaries quickly set out to convert the nation to Christianity. In the same year, a samurai boy named Tokugawa Ieyasu is born to a low ranking daimyo family.
To prove his family's loyalty to their ruling warlord, Ieyasu is given as a hostage where he remains for most of his childhood. When he is finally freed, he reclaims his family's domain and allies himself with the most powerful rulers in Japan: Oda Nobunaga, and his successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Hideyoshi awards him a small fishing village named Edo, later to be known as Tokyo, and provides him with a vast area to rule. But Hideyoshi and Ieyasu are uneasy allies.
On his deathbed, Hideyoshi, places Ieyasu in command until Hideyoshi's true heir—his young son, Hideyori—will rule. When daimyo rebels challenge Ieyasu's control, Tokugawa Ieyasu's samurai armies defeat them at the Battle of Sekigahara. The victory brings to Ieyasu the title of shogun. Ieyasu's only remaining obstacle for total control of Japan is Hideyori. In 1614, Ieyasu renounces his allegiance to Hideyori and attacks Osaka Castle, slaughtering more than 100,000. It is the beginning of a dynasty that will endure for more than 250 years.

Japan blossomed into its Renaissance at approximately the same time as Europe. Unlike the West, it flourished not through conquest and exploration, but by fierce and defiant isolation. And the man at the heart of this empire was Tokugawa Ieyasu, a warlord who ruled with absolute control. This period is explored through myriad voices-- the Shogun, the Samurai, the Geisha, the poet, the peasant and the Westerner who glimpsed into this secret world.
The Way of the Samurai
Tokugawa Ieyasu unifies Japan and establishes a dynasty that will rule Japan for over 250 years.
The Will of the Shogun
The grandson of Ieyasu, Tokugawa Iemitsu, tightens control over Japan's warlords and expels all foreigners.
The Return of the Barbarians
Isolated from the West, 18th century Edo flourishes culturally and economically, becoming one of the liveliest cities in the world. But foreign forces are coming.

Get info about things to do, where to stay, and the best food to eat on your visit to Tokyo, Japan. Here's the guide: http://wp.me/psd9b-4EA
Tokyo (東京), Japan, is one of the world's greatest cities, and there's so much to do and see when you visit. From temples and shrines, to gardens and museums, you'll never run out of attractions. Out of all the things you could do, I've chosen a top 25 list for this awesome city (and just so you know food is my first choice in Tokyo)!
1. Ameya-Yokochō (アメヤ横丁) - A giant open air market that offers clothes, cosmetics, food, and restaurants and bars.
2. Meiji Shrine (明治神宮) - This Shinto shrine, surrounded by beautiful forest, is extremely significant.
3. Ryogoku Kokugikan (両国国技館) - Even if it's not fight season, you can go to the free sumo museum and eat sumo chankonabe.
4. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (新宿御苑) - The garden is a beautiful attraction in Tokyo, with French gardens, Japanese gardens, and a green house.
5. Ginza (銀座) / Yurakucho (有楽町) - Ginza is a great area of town for upscale shopping and dining, while Yurakucho is famous for Izakaya bars and restaurants under the railroad track.
6. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (東京都庁舎) - There are a lot of things to do in Tokyo where you have to pay, but here, you can go to the 45th floor for free.
7. Tsukiji Market (築地市場) - One of the most famous attractions in all of Tokyo is the Tsukiji Market (築地市場), the biggest seafood market in the world.
8. Shibuya (渋谷区) - With the busiest intersection in the world, Shibuya (渋谷区) is also home to shopping and restaurant.
9. Sumida River (隅田川) - At Tokyo's Sumida River, you can either just walk around the park and enjoy the riverside views, or you can take the Tokyo Cruise in a boat.
10. Tokyo Imperial Palace (皇居) - This is the home of the emperor of Japan. To enter the grounds, you have to make a tour booking on the official website
11. Ueno Park (上野公園), Tokyo National Museum (東京国立博物館) - Ueno Park is a huge public park in Tokyo with shrines, gardens and a number of museums.
12. Tokyo Skytree (東京スカイツリー) - They call it Tokyo's biggest attractions. It's a huge communications tower with various viewing decks and galleries.
13. Harajuku (原宿), Takeshita Street (竹下通り) - Famous for its street market and cosplay that takes place, this is a place in the city to see and be seen.
14. Senso-ji (金龍山浅草寺) - Visiting this temple is one of the top things to do in Tokyo, frequented by both tourists and religious pilgrims. It's the oldest temple in Tokyo.
15. Edo-Tokyo Museum (江戸東京博物館) - It looks a little like a UFO, but it's one of Tokyo's main museums, that aims to preserve the history of the city.
16. Fine Dining - Let's just face it, Tokyo is one of the best cities in the world for high class dining - atmosphere, presentation, food, it's all just stunning!
17. Akihabara Electric Town (秋葉原電気街) - If you love electronics and gaming, you're going to love the area of Akihabara. You'll also find those infamous maid cafes here.
18. Tokyo Stock Exchange (東京証券取引所) - Another free attraction in Tokyo is to be a guest at the stock exchange where you can see the Japanese Nikkei being traded.
19. Roppongi (六本木) - Home to the Mori Art Museum and a hotspot for nightlife in the city, Roppongi is an exciting area of town.
20. Odaiba (お台場) - This area of Tokyo is full of things to do like Legoland, and Palette Town, an indoor amusement park. It's also known as Tokyo's entertainment island.
21. Yoyogi Park (代々木公園) - Located next to Meiji Shrine, and just a short distance from Harajuku and Shinjuku, this park is popular for exercise and dance.

wn.com/25 Things To Do In Tokyo, Japan (Watch This Before You Go)
Get info about things to do, where to stay, and the best food to eat on your visit to Tokyo, Japan.

Take a tour of Top 10 Travel Attractions of Kyoto, Japan - part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats.
Hey, this is your travel host, Naomi. I would like to give you a tour of the top ten attractions of Kyoto, Japan.
Number ten, Gion District. A wonderful traditional neighborhood in the city of Kyoto, during your time here you are likely to see geishas in their traditional attire.
Number nine, Bamboo Grove. Unlike any other place you are going to see. Walking through the bamboo grove, you are in a different world, surrounded by the tall bamboo trees.
Number eight, Heian Shrine. This Shinto shrine was constructed in 1895 and commemorates Kyoto's past emperors. These days, it's a site for many local festivals.
Number seven, Kinkaku-ji. Kyoto has numerous cultural sites. Kinkaku-ji, the Buddhist temple of the golden pavilion, is among Kyoto's 17 World Cultural Heritage sites.
Number six, Kiyomizu. Another famous temple of Kyoto built all the way back in the 8th century. Locals enjoy the surrounding natural landscape that changes throughout the year.
Number five, Fushimi Inari Shrine. Walking through the striking shrine gates, you are transported into another world. Many tradespeople come here to pray for prosperity of their businesses.
Number four, local culture. In Japan, even the simple day to day things are fascinating. You'll find the local way of life is spiritual as well as one that's harmonious with nature.
Number three, Ginkaku-ji, the temple was constructed in the 15th century. Japanese architecture melds nature with buildings beautifully, and you clearly see that in this temple's gardens.
Number two, Nijo Castle. A large complex built in the early 17th century. You can take the inside tour and witness its fortress-like features, along with its emphasis on harmony with nature.
And number one, cherry blossom. Kyoto is one of the world's most beautiful cities. A perfect time to visit this city is during the cherry blossoms, when its great cultural attractions look even more stunning.
Keep watching our travel series. Ciao.

Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of the most exciting megacities on the planet. The city is a spectacular matrix of villages, towns and cities, strung together by a super-efficient rail system.
Tradition, ritual and respect are the hallmarks of Japanese society. This is a place that cherishes its children, reveres its elderly, and treats visitors like honored guests.
Begin your Tokyo journey in the ancient town of Asakusa, home to the city’s oldest temple, Sensoji. Then head to the suburb of Harajuku, renowned as a center of youth culture and fashion and home to one of Tokyo’s largest green spaces, Yoyogi Park.
Just to the north of Yoyogi Park, is Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the father of modern Japan, Emperor Meji.
At Shibuya, cross one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in the world, and at Ginza explore huge department stores and tiny yakitori joints and beer halls around Yurakucho Station.
Stroll down Marunouchi’s wide tree-lined avenues, then explore the anime, manga, electronics stores in Akihabara Electric Town.
Relax in Shinjuku Gyoen National Gardens, then ride the elevator to the observatories of Tokyo Tower and Mori Tower for views across Tokyo Bay and to Mt Fuji.
Tokyo is filled with award-winning restaurants, but for the freshest sushi and sashimi, head to the Tsukiji Fish Markets.
The historic port city of Yokohama is only a half hour train ride from central Tokyo. Another great day trip is Narita, a fascinating window into old Japan.

Japan Travel: Chikurin-in Temple old ryokan once emperor loved, Nara006
Chikurin-in is a Buddhist temple located along the border between the Naka and Kami Senbon areas of Mount Yoshino. Just like most accommodations in Yoshino, the Chikurin-in ryokan gets fully booked up far in advance during the busy season when cherry blossom is beautiful.
The temple is also famous for its beautiful landscape garden, Gunpoen, which is said to have been designed by Sen-no-Rikyu, the famous tea master. The garden contains a large pond lined with dozens of cherry trees. Walking trails up the hill behind the pond leading to an archery ground, tranquil rest areas and viewpoints from which you can look out over the mountain slopes to Kinpusenji Temple.

Closed: Irregular closing days for maintenance
Admission: 300 yen

Ancient history is the aggregate of past events from the beginning of recorded human history and extending as far as the Early Middle Ages or the Postclassical Era. The span of recorded
history is roughly 5,000 years, beginning with Sumerian Cuneiform script, the oldest discovered form of coherent writing from the protoliterate period around the 30th century BC.
The term classical antiquity is often used to refer to history in the Old World from the beginning of recorded Greek history in 776 BC (First Olympiad). This roughly coincides with the
traditional date of the founding of Rome in 753 BC, the beginning of the history of ancient Rome, and the beginning of the Archaic period in Ancient Greece. Although the ending date of
ancient history is disputed, some Western scholars use the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD (the most used), the closure of the Platonic Academy in 529 AD, the death
of the emperor Justinian I in 565 AD, the coming of Islam or the rise of Charlemagne[8] as the end of ancient and Classical European history.
In India, ancient history includes the early period of the Middle Kingdoms, and, in China, the time up to the Qin Dynasty.

The Tokyo Imperial Palace (皇居 Kōkyo?, literally, "Imperial Residence") is the main residence of the Emperor of Japan. It is a large park-like area located in the Chiyoda area of Tokyo close to Tokyo Station and contains several buildings including the main palace (宮殿 Kyūden?), the private residences of the imperial family, an archive, museum and administrative offices.
It is built on the site of the old Edo Castle. The total area including the gardens is 3.41 square kilometres (1.32 sq mi). During the height of the 1980s Japanese property bubble, the palace grounds were valued by some as more than the value of all the real estate in the state of California.
In Part One of my India travel video guide, I begin my travels in India with Calcutta (Kolkata). India had long been on my bucket list of countries to travel to in the world, and in April, 2013, I finally made it there, starting with Calcutta, with no better reason than the fact was I knew so little about that part of the country.
Calcutta was once the capital of the British Empire in India, and today it's home to over 14 million people, which means the city itself is a crowded, dense, loud, but endlessly fascinating place to explore. In this video I explore the alleyways and grand buildings that make up B.B.D. Bagh, the area where the city was founded.
After checking out a parade (a very common occurrence I was to later learn) and grabbing a roadside cup of chai, I stop at the home of famed poet and writer Rabindranath Tagore, the first Indian to win the Nobel Prize, and whose home is a great place to learn about Calcutta's cultural history.
*
In Part Two of my India travel video guide, I travel to Bodhgaya, one of the most sacred places in all of the Buddhist religion. It was at this location 2,500 years ago that a young Prince Siddhartha sat under a fig tree, meditated and found enlightenment, thus becoming the Buddha.
I start off by visiting the many temples that have been built by various Buddhists from around the world, including temples dedicated to Buddhists living in China, Japan, Tibet and Nepal. I then visit the Tergar Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in the region, which is a short walk from the main road.
I then head to the sacred Mahabodhi Temple complex in the center of town. At sunset it is a scenic, peaceful time to explore the grounds, which include a large monument built at the Bodhi Tree itself, as well as a sprawling garden area where people come from around the world to meditate.
*
In Part Three of my India travel video guide, I travel to Varanasi, one of the holiest cities in the Hindu religion. In this video I visit the famous ghats, or steps, which lead into the Ganges River, the holy river where visitors and locals come every day to wash themselves and perform religious ceremonies.
It is on the banks of the Ganges where thousands of bodies are burned every year. Having your body burned and its ashes spread here is considered to be one of the holiest places in the world to do so in the Hindu religion.
After exploring the riverfront, I stop by a local music shop to play tabla with a local sitar player. Though I was a drummer in a past life, the tabla are a completely different style of playing than I was used to -- you've been warned.
I finish up by taking a morning boat ride in the Ganges river. The colors you see on the river and on the buildings towering above are spectacular as the sun rises in the morning, and it was one of my most memorable experiences of the entire trip.
*
In part four of my video travel guide series to India, I travel to Darjeeling, the famed hill station known for its views and famous tea plantations. The city itself is nestled in the Himalaya mountains between Nepal and Northeast India, and is a popular place for people to stay before heading into the mountains for a trek.
In this video I visit Observatory Hill, home to the temple where it is thought Darjeeling got its name. Today there are several shrines there, thousands of prayer flags decorating the trees, and even a temple cave.
I then head to Happy Valley Tea Estate, one of the only tea plantations actually located in town, where I explore the grounds and sit down for afternoon tea with a local picker. Despite what I always assumed to be an acute sense of smell, I had difficulty picking out the better tea leaves amongst the options, but I gave it a try anyway.
*
In Part Five (my last) of my India travel video guide, I trek into the Himalayas along the famed Singalila Ridge, a picturesque trail that winds its way between Nepal and India, and through multiple small Himalayan villages. The highlight is the morning sunrise over the third highest mountain in the world, Mount Kanchenjunga, as well the views of Mount Everest in the far distance.

Istanbul is a fantastic heritage of the Byzantine Empire and Constantinople, and its unique quality is that it lies on two continents. Europe and Asia are separated by the picturesque Golden Horn Bay. On the quiet Asian side live the wealthy citizens, while the European part is a busy center for business life, and also the ancient city core, full of old monuments, can be found here. There is the Aia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Yedikule fortress and the Topkapi Palace. And then there is the colorful, loud and exotic Grand Bazaar, favorite target of the tourists. Let us go to the house of Pierre Loti, drink a cup of Turkish coffee and enjoy the sight of the Marble Sea and the city of the thousand minarets
