Courtesy of USGS Astrogeology Science Center. The surface of Mars has changed dramatically during the three decades spanned by spacecraft exploration. Comparisons of Mars Global Surveyor images with Viking and Mariner 9 pictures suggest that more than one third of Mars' surface area has brightened or darkened by at least 10%. Such albedo changes could produce significant effects on solar heating and the global circulation of winds across the planet. All of the major changes took place in areas of moderate to high thermal inertia and rock abundance, consistent with burial of rocky surfaces by thin dust layers deposited during dust storms and subsequent exposure of the rocky surfaces by aeolian erosion. Several distinct mechanisms contribute to aeolian erosion on Mars. Persistent winds dominate erosion at low latitudes, producing diffuse albedo boundaries and linear wind streaks generally oriented in the direction of southern summer winds. Dust devils darken the mid- to high- latitudes from 45 to 70 degrees during the summer seasons, forming irregular albedo patterns consisting of dark linear tracks. Dust storms produce regional albedo variations with distinct but irregular margins. Dark sand dunes in southern high latitudes appear to be associated with regional darkening that displays diffuse albedo boundaries. No surface changes were observed to repeat regularly on an annual basis, but many of the changes took place in areas that alternate episodically between high and low albedo states as thin mantles of dust are deposited and later stripped off. Hence, the face of Mars remains recognizable after a century of telescopic observations, in spite of the enormous extent of alteration that has taken place during the intervals between spacecraft missions.

MOC (Mars Orbiter Camera) Movie Showing Seasonal Variations.

Yet another one sent over from Kjell. This has to have been seen by someone before this!? It is just to cool. Check out the structure of the buried object. The shape looks like something that would be made here on Earth. It looks to have tubing and as well as chambers in it. Let me know what you think! Below is a link to the NASA website where you can download the picture for yourself.

A photo of a rock formation on the Martian surface shows an oddly shaped feature, and it is the opinion of numerous Internet posters that it is a space crab.
Scientists are actively looking for signs of life, past or present, on Mars, but are largely focused on the microscopic sort.
Many alien enthusiasts, however, are speculating about the possibility of something much bigger.
A photo taken in July of a rock formation on the Martian surface shows an oddly shaped feature, and numerous Internet users believe it's a space crab.
The image was posted to the Facebook page of the group ‘Journey to the Surface of the Mars,’ and it sparked a great deal of commentary and debate.
Although the popular theory is that it's an alien crustacean, one person commented, “It looks a human kind of face in a…spider body!”
Websites devoted to alien spotting also published the image, and a mounting desire to know the truth has sparked a movement to get NASA to conduct further examinations.
The Center for SETI Research's director and senior astronomer says there’s no cause for alarm as the crab sighting is simply an example of pareidolia, a mental phenomenon that causes people to see specific objects in arbitrary formations.
He also told the Huffington Post, "Recognizing a crab in a landscape…is no more surprising…than seeing a winking face in a semi-colon followed by a parenthesis. ;)"
