This historic U.S. Navy film was made in the wake of the disastrous air attack and fire aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin in 1945, specifically to provide naval ship architects insight into the structural damage endured by the ship during the incident. According to a truncated card at the head of the film, this forensic examination of the damage was made in hopes that future carriers might be made more resistant to damage. USS Franklin (CV/CVA/CVS-13, AVT-8), nicknamed "Big Ben," was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy, and the fifth US Navy ship to bear the name. Commissioned in January 1944, she served in several campaigns in the Pacific War, earning four battle stars. She was badly damaged by a Japanese air attack in March 1945, with the loss of over 800 of her crew, becoming the most heavily damaged United States carrier to survive the war. Movie footage of the actual attack was included in the 1949 film Task Force starring Gary Cooper. After the attack, she returned to the U.S. mainland for repairs, missing the rest of the war; she was decommissioned in 1947. While in reserve, she was reclassified as an attack carrier (CVA), then an antisubmarine carrier (CVS), and finally an aircraft transport (AVT), but was never modernized and never saw active service again. Before dawn on 19 March 1945, Franklin, which had maneuvered to within 80 km (50 miles) of the Japanese mainland, closer than had any other U.S. carrier during the war, launched a fighter sweep against Honshū and later a strike against shipping in Kobe Harbor. Suddenly, a single aircraft — possibly a Yokosuka D4Y "Judy" dive bomber, though other accounts suggest an Aichi D3A "Val", also a dive bomber — pierced the cloud cover and made a low level run on the ship to drop two semi-armor-piercing bombs... One bomb struck the flight deck centerline, penetrating to the hangar deck, effecting destruction and igniting fires through the second and third decks, and knocking out the Combat Information Center and air plot. The second hit aft, tearing through two decks. At the time she was struck, Franklin had 31 armed and fueled aircraft warming up on her flight deck. The hangar deck contained 22 additional planes, of which 16 were fueled and five were armed... Franklin lay dead in the water, took a 13° starboard list, lost all radio communications, and broiled under the heat from enveloping fires. Many of the crew were blown overboard, driven off by fire, killed or wounded, but the hundreds of officers and enlisted who voluntarily remained saved their ship. Official Navy casualty figures for the March 19, 1945 fire totaled 724 killed and 265 wounded... Franklin was taken in tow by the heavy cruiser Pittsburgh until she was able to raise enough steam to reach a speed of 14 kts (26 km/h), and then she proceed to Ulithi Atoll under her own power for emergency repairs. Next, she steamed to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where repairs permitted her to steam to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, New York, via the Panama Canal, where she arrived on 28 April 1945... Despite severe damage, Franklin was eventually restored to good condition... While Franklin lay mothballed at Bayonne, she was redesignated as an attack aircraft carrier CVA-13 on 1 October 1952, an antisubmarine warfare support carrier CVS-13 on 8 August 1953 and, ultimately, as an aircraft transport AVT-8 on 15 May 1959. However, she never went to sea again, and was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 October 1964. She and Bunker Hill - which also had sustained severe damage from aerial attack - were the only carriers in their class that never saw any active-duty postwar service, though their wartime damage had been successfully repaired...

This newsreel from late 1945 shows the American assault on Okinawa and the effects of the Japanese kamikaze attack on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin, one of the most terrible naval incidents in the late Pacific campaign. Franklin survived and, as the newsreel shows, made its way triumphantly back to the continental United States and New York Harbor where its crew was honored for their tremendous courage and sacrifice. The Battle of Okinawa was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and included the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War during World War II. The 82-day-long battle lasted from early April until mid-June 1945. After a long campaign of island hopping, the Allies were approaching Japan, and planned to use Okinawa, a large island only 340 mi (550 km) away from mainland Japan, as a base for air operations on the planned invasion of Japanese mainland (coded Operation Downfall). Four divisions of the U.S. 10th Army (the 7th, 27th, 77th, and 96th) and two Marine Divisions (the 1st and 6th) fought on the island. Their invasion was supported by naval, amphibious, and tactical air forces. The battle has been referred to as the "typhoon of steel" in English, and tetsu no ame ("rain of steel") or tetsu no bōfū ("violent wind of steel") in Japanese. The nicknames refer to the ferocity of the fighting, the intensity of kamikaze attacks from the Japanese defenders, and to the sheer numbers of Allied ships and armored vehicles that assaulted the island. The battle was one of the bloodiest in the Pacific. Based on Okinawan government sources, mainland Japan lost 77,166 soldiers, who were either killed or committed suicide, and the Allies suffered 14,009 deaths (with an estimated total of more than 65,000 casualties of all kinds). Simultaneously, 42,000–150,000 local civilians were killed or committed suicide, a significant proportion of the local population. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki together with the Soviet invasion of Manchuria caused Japan to surrender less than two months after the end of the fighting on Okinawa. This silent footage, with periodic title cards, was created after the Japanese attack on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin. Although somewhat edited, it appears to be a "rough cut" or hastily assembled compilation of film, possibly shown at briefings to U.S. Navy staff. Some of the shots seen in this film appear in other films on our channel including "Saga of the Franklin." Others did not end up in that film. The USS Franklin (CV/CVA/CVS-13, AVT-8), nicknamed "Big Ben," was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy, and the fifth US Navy ship to bear the name. Commissioned in January 1944, she served in several campaigns in the Pacific War, earning four battle stars. She was badly damaged by a Japanese air attack in March 1945, with the loss of over 800 of her crew, becoming the most heavily damaged United States carrier to survive the war. Movie footage of the actual attack was included in the 1949 film Task Force starring Gary Cooper. After the attack, she returned to the U.S. mainland for repairs, missing the rest of the war; she was decommissioned in 1947. While in reserve, she was reclassified as an attack carrier (CVA), then an antisubmarine carrier (CVS), and finally an aircraft transport (AVT), but was never modernized and never saw active service again. Franklin and Bunker Hill (damaged by a kamikaze) were the only Essex-class carriers not to see active service as aircraft carriers after World War II. The Franklin was sold for scrap in 1966. Chevy's first major redesign post-World War II, the Advance-Design series was billed as a bigger, stronger, and sleeker design in comparison to the earlier AK Series. First available on Saturday June 28, 1947, these trucks were sold with various minor changes over the years until March 25, 1955, when the Task Force Series trucks replaced the aging Advance-Design model. The same basic design family was used for all of its trucks including the Suburban, panel trucks, canopy express and cab overs. The cab overs used the same basic cab configuration and similar grille but used a shorter and taller hood and different fenders. The unique Cab Over fenders and hood required a custom cowl area which makes the Cab Over Engine cabs and normal truck cabs incompatible with one another while all truck cabs of all weights interchange. From 1947 until 1955, Chevrolet trucks were number one in sales in the United States, with rebranded versions sold at GMC locations. While the five bar grille remained unchanged for the 1949 model year, other features such as appearance and finish had changed. Inner bar assemblies were changed to a Waldorf White finish. Trucks that featured a rear corner window, a different rear roof panel section were used. The windshield still came in two-pieces with a black rubber seal and stainless steel divider bar. The interior featured wide seats, large windshield, side and rear windows. The instrument panel displayed fuel gauge and ammeter, pressure heat indicator and an oil pressure gauge. The ¾ ton trucks, as well as the 1 ton trucks, received the same new styling but had a longer wheelbase and bed. Longer running boards were featured on the 3600 & 3800 series. Also available again were the 3700 Series, 3/4 ton, and 3900 Series, 1 ton, Dubl-Duti Forward Control Chassis Truck. This allowed the buyer to add their own truck body. Calendar year production for the 1949 Chevy Pickup totaled 383,543. Options included rearview mirrors, genuine leather seat trim, chrome radiator grill, long running boards and rear fenders, dual tail and stop lamps, oil bath air cleaner, heavy-duty clutch and various tire size options. Dealer accessories included a rod type radio antenna, locking gas cap, gasoline filter, outside air heater/defroster, matched horns, under the hood lamp, non glare rearview mirror, hood ornament, windshield scraper plus a tool kit bag and tools. This fantastic example of a Advance Design pickup includes these updates: Rebuilt factory 6 cylinder now has a replacement air filter, updated carburetor, and alternator instead of a generator for this 216 cube engine, plus a 12 volt electrical system, painted new wheels, new tires and spare, rebuilt cargo bed with varnished wood slats and chromed dividers, new wood stakes around the bed, new upholstery, and new paint.
