The Horrible Plight of Hong Kong's Poor
Cage People (1995): Near the upmarket Kowloon shopping district is a hell hole for the broken dreams of Hong Kong. A man crouches in a tiny wire cage hardly bigger than a child's cot. It's been his home for 30 years. He is one of Hong Kong's hidden poor - a worker that nobody wants.

The lady featured in this video was politely asked to speak in a more hushed tone as she got onto the silent carriage, yelling down her mobile phone. In a train carriage full of children, the elderly lady who had politely asked her to quiet down was then attacked by a barrage of unnecessary swear words and insults, to which she calmly continued to ask the yeller to stop. After a few minutes of this, I found that the train carriage had emptied itself. Still, this didn't deter her from continually yelling insults at the elderly lady. If this doesn't scream disrespect, I don't know what does. The fact that the woman yelling isn't ashamed of her behaviour is incomprehensible.
In Hong Kong, there is a prevalent dislike for those who come down from the mainland. In addition to the yelling, the spitting, the shoving, the cutting of queues and pissing on the streets, this obnoxious display is another one of the reasons why Chinese people from the mainland get a bad rep. That is not to say that all people from the mainland will act this way, as that is a terrible generalization. That being said, I have witnessed more than a few handfuls of these altercations, this footage being an example of one....
For shame, lady. Have some respect.
If anyone has got a translation, I'd be more than willing to put it up.

Despite its wealth, Hong Kong is leaving its poor to rot in squalid conditions. With one toilet per floor and just a few square feet to their name, thousands of cage dwellers live no better than animals.
"Many can't afford three meals a day or even water, the rent is not even cheap!" says human rights activist Sze Lai. She introduces us to 79-year-old Dai, who has spent 30 years in a cage. Ten other men share his room. Piled up to the ceiling, their cages would look shocking in a zoo. A chief worry is hygiene. 8-year-old Jessica lives with her mother in a cubicle too small to let a grown man stand. She points to the only toilet on their floor: "I hate it. People above throw dead rats down here". Although the need for public housing is dire, nothing is being done to eradicate cage dwelling. With only half of the government elected by universal suffrage, the poor just don't have a voice.

English/Nat
A United Nations deadline has thrown into doubt the future of more than 20-thousand Vietnamese boat people detained in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong government admitted earlier this week that it can't meet the target to close the camps by 1996.
It is now facing a law suit for illegally detaining up to 400 Vietnamese boat people.
Almost 24-thousand Vietnamese boat people held in camps like this one in Hong Kong have been told they will not get refugee status.
The Hong Kong government has forcibly deported a number of the long stayers, but for the rest there are few countries who will take them.
Many of the Vietnamese refuse to go home voluntarily, leaving Hong Kong with the possibility of having thousands of illegal immigrants left in the colony when it's handed over to the Chinese in 1997.
It has also left the government with the job of trying to recover 123 (m) million US dollars from the United Nations relief agency U-N-H-C-R (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees).
Hong Kong says it's owed the money for housing the Vietnamese.
With the UN deadline to clear the camps, the Vietnamese are left in limbo.
SOUNDBITE:
"We have an international dilemma. I think we have a human tragedy, we have people who have spent years in detention, who had children born in detention who've seen nothing but barbed wire and fences, who've never seen a cat or a dog or a tree or a cow, who've seen nothing but a prison.''
SUPER CAPTION: Jahanshah Assadi, Chief of Mission UNHCR
Many of the Vietnamese who have been given refugee status are now in open camps like this one.
But they have submitted to the pressure of refugee life and there is a major drug problem in this camp.
SOUNDBITE:
"Heroin, most of it's heroin, yes, but it's not just limited to drug taking, people have been selling or buying, so it's a question also of some minor criminal offences, some major criminal offences.''
SUPER CAPTION: Jahanshah Assadi, Chief of Mission UNHCR
The U-N-H-C-R is now conducting detoxification programmes to try to make the Vietnamese suitable candidates for resettlement.
On top of these problems, a local group called Refugee Concern is threatening legal action against the Hong Kong government on behalf of 400 of the Vietnamese who have been rejected by Hanoi, but are still in detention.
The government this week released just over 100 of the Vietnamese and placed them in the open camp at Pillar Point.
SOUNDBITE:
"They have in genuine cases, these people have been illegally detained by the Hong Kong government while they are working on their resettlement, so I think by releasing them, the Hong Kong government have admitted that these cases are valid and they should be released.
SUPER CAPTION: Anthony T. O Leung, Refugee Concern.
The Hong Kong government now has to race against two clocks, one set by the international community to close the camps and the other set by the handover of sovereignty to China in 1997.
Apart from trying to convince the Vietnamese to go home voluntarily, the only other choice is to send them back.
That is exactly what it plans to do next week when up to 100 Vietnamese will be forcibly deported.

Soaring rents and unemployment have forced an increasing number of people below the poverty line. While the rich business elite of Hong Kong line their pockets, state-welfare is still a dirty word. Despite the government's budget surplus there is no minimum wage or unemployment benefit. Meanwhile inflation, together with cheap Chinese workers, threatens to force more and more people out of work. Waiting lists for housing can be seven years and suicide rates are high. Dignity is an important concept for the Chinese and many regard a caged existence as hardly worth living.

Hong Kong, a former British territory, is one of the most densely populated places in China and in the world. You’ll find quiet neighborhoods full of temples and a dazzling skyline loaded with shopping and dining opportunities.
Your Hong Kong tour must include visits to the many religious sites scattered around the city, where incense wafts from shrines and monasteries take over entire hillsides. You’ll have a marvelous time shopping in tax-free Hong Kong, where you’ll be able to find clothing, jewelry, furniture, and everything else under the sun.
Don’t forget about Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, which overlooks the stunning Victoria Harbor. From there, your Hong Kong sightseeing may detour to Central, the city’s main business district, which looks like something out of a sci-fi film. The observation deck atop the International Commerce Centre will show you fantastic views of the city.
Hong Kong isn’t all cityscape, of course; there are many gardens, parks, and other green spaces for you to explore. You’ll also find beaches, national parks, and quiet islands for you to indulge in natural beauty and serenity. This city truly has everything.

’Hongkong is the Manhattan dream rising from the South-Chinese Sea’- wrote a delighted traveler upon seeing the skyscrapers of the city. The banks, shopping centers and offices of Hong Kong enriched modern architecture with iconic buildings. From the top of the Victoria’s Peak, one can take a look at the main representative of Asian business and trading, which is continuously developing even under Chinese rule. There are multi-storied buses and trams carrying the passengers in the busy inner city. The visitors are attracted by the night market, the Jade Market, the harbor with the living boats, the Star Ferry with its famous ships, the floating restaurants and the junks...

Hong Kong is one of the most exciting cities in the world. What makes this city so vibrant and energetic? It is nearly seven million residents. The city has a unique blend of Western and Chinese culture, which seem to co-exist very well and help make this city so fascinating.
The most important places to visit in Hong Kong are: The Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery (this statue is one of the five largest statues of Chin), The Victoria Peak (this is something like a top view or a view point from where you can see the entire city of Hong Kong), Avenue of Stars (a place of tribute to the film stars, both past and present Hong Kong cinemas) and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Hong Kong travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

Get familiar with public transportation of Hong Kong for your trip.
There are close to 7 million people in this city. Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. If you own a car or are riding a taxi, you will run into traffic jams like in any large city. However, Hong Kong has various transportation options such as trams, buses, mini-buses, ferries and trains which make it really easy to get around. In fact, Hong Kong has one of the most efficient transportation systems in the world with 80% of its residents using it.
Let's see what it is like to ride on the local train here called the MTR. When using the MTR, you can buy a single journey ticket or a one day pass. Although there are many ticket attendants at all the stations, using the automatic ticket machine is really easy. Here we are at Sheung Wan MTR station and need to go to the Mong Kok station. On this machine, I simply select my destination, it tells me the price, 11 dollars, I put in the money here and I have my ticket. If I do not have change, there is another ticketing option here. This is one of the greatest conveniences of Hong Kong for a local or a tourist, and that is the Octopus card. It is an electronically stored money card which is accepted on trains, trams, buses, ferries and even convenience stores such as 7-Eleven and Circle K. You can buy them at any MTR station or you can also buy them at convenience stores such as 7-Eleven and Circle K.
If you have a ticket, you enter it here, but since I have my Octopus card, you simply swipe it. To find out the platform, I have to know which line I am taking, as the platform will be marked by the last stop on that line. In this case, Chai Wan. Looking at the map, the last stop on the blue line is Chai Wan. Inside the train, we can always tell how far a stop is. That was our quick and painless journey in Hong Kong's MTR system. This is Rosanna Wilcox, showing you Hong Kong.

Hong Kong was a dream come true. In my youth, I grew up watching Vietnamese dubbed Hong Kong movie series that my parents rented with hundreds of VHS tapes. Later on, I moved onto watching Hong Kong movies and just grew in love with urban Asian culture. I finally got a chance to visit Hong Kong and it was one of the best trips I've ever had. I visited Victoria Harbor to the the Symphony of Lights. I went to the Nan Lian Gardens, the Lin Po Monastery with the giant buddha, and the Victoria Peak over looking the city below. My trip is no where near complete because of time issues, but I can't wait to see Hong Kong again.

Hong Kong Travel Video including some of the top things to do in Hong Kong along with the best attractions in Hong Kong, China.
Hong Kong is one of the most dynamic cities in all of Asia. From a travel perspective it offers numerous diverse options worth exploring.
Whether one is exploring Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, Victoria Harbor or the New Territories, there are plenty of attractions to cover.
The following is a list of the top things to do in Hong Kong:
1) Avenue of Stars at Night in Kowloon (星光大道)
Wandering around Avenue of Stars at night is the perfect way to experience Hong Kong in the evening. Overlooking Victoria Harbour, this area has been modeled after the Hollywood Walk of Fame championing all of the celebrities involved in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. None is more famous than the Bruce Lee statue. This is also the perfect place to watch A Symphony of Lights laser show which happens daily at 8 pm.
2) Afternoon High Tea at the Peninsula
Sitting down for afternoon tea at the Peninsula is one of the more posh activities in Hong Kong. Expect to wait in line (we waited over 2 hours) for a table. You can get complete sets which include assorted finger food along with a drink. This is definitely not a budget activity.
3) Views of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak and Tram Ride (太平山)
Taking a tram ride up to Victoria Peak to experience the best vantage point of Hong Kong, Kowloon and Victoria Harbor is one of the top attractions in the city. Many come at night; however, we recommend coming in the afternoon on a weekday when you can enjoy having more personal space.
4) Star Ferry boat ride (天星小輪)
There are many different modes of transportation in Hong Kong; however, none are quite as authentic of an experience as taking Star Ferry from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon or vice versa. It's one of the cheapest ways to get around.
5) Junk Boat Ride
Taking a Junk boat ride around Victoria harbor offers some of the best views of the city. It's especially popular at night to take in A Symphony of Lights performance.
6) Hong Kong Park and Tea Appreciation Ceremony (香港公園)
To get away from all of the hustle and bustle check out Hong Kong Park for a tranquil escape. If you have time participate in a Chinese tea appreciation ceremony.
7) Sampan Boat Tour in Aberdeen (舢舨)
Taking a ride on a traditional Sampan boat allows you to experience what life is like for Chinese fishermen.
8) Eating Dim Sum (點心 - 点心)
One should not leave Hong Kong without first trying dim sum. These small sized bites are treats that are accompanied by a pot of Chinese tea.
9) Taking a night bus tour of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon
Taking a night bus tour allows you to visit distinct areas in both Hong Kong Island and Kowloon such as Mong Kok and Causeway Bay.

The Hong Kong independence movement is a movement that advocates Hong Kong becoming an independent sovereign state. Following the handover of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China, many Hongkongers have expressed concern over the governance by the Communist Party of China over issues surrounding justice, freedom, democratic development, as well as well-developed economic environment after being a special administrative region. Some of them want the current SAR to become a sovereign city-state like Singapore, also a former crown colony of the British Empire. According to HKPOP's 2007 poll, 25% of Hong Kongers preferred an independent Hong Kong rather than an SAR ruled by PRC, an increase from 22% in 2005, while 64.7% of interviewees thought it should not be independent. 33% of interviewees said they would prefer independence if the Communist Party still rules PRC in 2047, when the Sino-British Joint Declaration expires, but stated that they would prefer to remain part of the country if and only if the Communist Party reforms into a full democracy with universal suffrage.
This movement should not be confused with the Hong Kong Autonomy Movement, which rather than advocate independence from the PRC, demands that the PRC allow and implement the Hong Kong people a high degree of autonomy, as was promised at the Handover of 1997.

Hongkongers express support for country parks
during unprecedented event in response to development threats
Today, the Save Our Country Parks alliance held an unprecedented, territory-wide event leading to a "Facebook Fire Storm" in support of Hong Kong country parks. With the theme #SaveOurCountryParks, this was the first Country Parks Appreciation Day to be held annually on the 2nd Sunday in December.
The firestorm of selfies #SaveOurCountryParks is happening on Facebook with thousands of images and messages uploaded by hikers today throughout Hong kong's country parks
Over 200 volunteers from 16 organisations and individuals set up more than 30 stations at key entrances to 20 of Hong Kong's 24 country parks. The volunteers counted visitors and asked them to take selfies in support of safeguarding country parks. The mega event gave Hong Kong people an opportunity to stand up and oppose those wanting to use country parks for development.
From 8am to 12noon, 34,106 visitors were counted entering the country parks and get the message of Save Our Country Parks from our volunteers. Over thousands of messages were tagged with #SaveOurCountryParks across social media, including Instagram and Facebook event page.
“This event is truly amazing," said Prof. Lam Chiu-ying, former director of the Hong Kong Observatory and currently adjunct professor of the Geography and Resource Management Department of CUHK. "It's great that so many groups have rallied in support of our country parks, giving Hong Kong people a chance to air their views."
Prof. Lam added: "The national government has decided to incorporate special ecological areas within its urban planning strategy. We should do likewise, yet there are increasing threats from developments. Hong Kong has a unique treasure with our extensive country parks system - which no other World City can rival. Developers and government should not encroach on this unique asset. Today's event shows that people care and are willing to stand up to protect the country parks for our next generations.”
According to the Country and Marine Parks Authority’s Progress Report, the number of visitors has increased 24.8% compared with last summer - clearly showing that country parks are ever more important for leisure and relaxation for Hong Kong residents and visitors.
Prof. Wong Fook-yee, adjunct professor of the Geography and Resource Management Department of CUHK, related the history and objectives of establishing Hong Kong country parks, and said they should be conserved and protected.
“We have more than ten thousands members - all of whom love the country parks –and this continues to grow," said SK Shum, organiser of Hong Kong Hiking Meetup. "The country parks are for gathering and meeting new people, for sports and recreation, for our health.”
Suzanne Cheung, CEO of Friends of the Earth (Hong Kong), said, "I love country parks, and am keenly aware of the environmental benefits - such as providing habitats for wildlife to enhance biodiversity, trees absorb carbon dioxide (GHG) to mitigate climate change, greenery that benefits our mental and physical health, and as a source of clean drinking water."
The groups also called on the Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying to stay true to his Election Manifesto, in which he promised that “We will protect our country parks and bodies of land and water with ecological value, and formulate long-term plans for other areas of land available for development.”

What do you think is the best way to promote veganism?
Do you get a good response from the public when you tell people about veganism?
Why did you volunteer your free time to Club O?
Have you been able to stay healthy and fit when you went vegan?
What is it like being vegan in Hong Kong?
A lot of people say "Animals were put on the earth for us to eat" what do you say in response to that?
Talking about protests aimed at China for eating cats and dogs while still eating cows and chickens.
Do you have a response to people just focusing cats and dogs?

Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has an area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with the Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million Hongkongers of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Japanese surrender the British resumed control until 30 June 1997. As a result of negotiations between China and Britain, Hong Kong was transferred to the People's Republic of China under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems.
In the late 1970s, Hong Kong became a major entrepôt in Asia-Pacific. The territory has developed into a major global trade hub and financial centre, and is regarded as a world city. The 45th-largest economy in the world, Hong Kong ranks top 10 in GDP (PPP) per capita, but also has the most severe income inequality among advanced economies. Hong Kong is one of the three most important financial centres alongside New York and London. The territory has a high Human Development Index and is ranked highly in the Global Competitiveness Report. It has been named the freest market economy by the Heritage Foundation Index of Economic Freedom. The service economy, characterised by free trade and low taxation, has been regarded as one of the world's most laissez-faire economic policies, and the currency, the Hong Kong dollar, is the 13th most traded currency in the world. Hong Kong is a member of APEC, ADB, IMF, BIS, WTO, FIFA, and International Olympic Committee, as Hong Kong Basic Law authorizes the territory to develop relations with foreign states on its own in appropriate fields, including the economic, trade, financial and monetary, shipping, communications, tourism, cultural and sports fields.
Limited land created a dense infrastructure and the territory became a centre of modern architecture, and one of the world's most vertical cities. Hong Kong has a highly developed public transportation network covering 90 per cent of the population, the highest in the world, and relies on mass transit by road or rail. Air pollution remains a serious problem. Loose emissions standards have resulted in a high level of atmospheric particulates. Nevertheless, Hongkongers enjoy the world's longest or second longest life expectancies.

As other diners in the McDonalds enjoyed their Big Macs past midnight early last month, no one noticed the middle-aged woman who appeared to be sleeping at her table. The woman, wearing a grey coat and slippers, abruptly slumped over at about 1:20 a.m., according to surveillance camera footage. It wasn't until the next morning that a customer found the woman was cold and unresponsive. The police were called at 8:30 a.m., about 24 hours after the woman first entered the restaurant, according to a report in the South China Morning Post. The death of the woman, identified by police as a 56-year-old surnamed Lai, has focused attention on the growing number of working poor and homeless people spending their nights in McDonalds.

The proposal was bold and straightforward: “Hong Kong Property for Hong Kong People”. Well, it’s been shelved already, amid claims that it never did have that much bite in the first place. The two Kai Tak sites bought by mainland developers under the scheme still haven’t passed Legco’s legislative procedures, which means that there could be no criminal liability for violating the previous rules or restrictions. The government says demand from overseas buyers has already dropped to a very low level.
There’ve been dark mutterings in some circles, particularly in mainland China, that Taiwan’s Sunflower Student Movement is the beginning of a pro-independence movement in Taiwan. Others say the students have limited aims, and that their departure from Taiwan’s legislative yuan this week shows that they may have already achieved just what they set out to do ...
There are about 34,000 special needs students in integrated or “inclusive” local Cantonese-speaking schools, apart from 8,000 in individual schools catering exclusively to such children. For non-Cantonese speakers things can be even tougher, as affordable places are very hard to come by in international schools too.

Welcome to the newest RPG by Harebrained Schemes, this is my Let's Play of Shadowrun: Hong Kong, the brain-child of Jordan Weisman and his friends who, through Kickstarter, sweat and tears, got us another hit of what is hopefully gonna be a great adventure in the cyberpunk world of Shadowrun.
The game is available on Steam for 19.99€ if you're interested, in all it's stat-filled, turn-based, story-driven attire, and sends us in an adventure to help an old and dear friend living in futuristic Hong Kong.
It's 2056 and the world is filled with technology and magic alike. We're not alone, though. We have friends to run the shadows alongside our own character, and hopefully get ourselves into trouble.
So... What do you say?

Megacities - Hong Kong Full Documentary
Megacities uncovers the rapid growth, new forms of spatial density of population, formal and informal economics as well as poverty, crime, and high levels of social fragmentation.
Megacities takes a revolutionary look at the places where most of us live: the modern Metropolis. Megacities focuses on the single aspect of a city's infrastructure which best informs the life and functions of that place. Each city is examined as an organism: living, breathing, and growing. In order to survive, these infrastructures must each function independently, and yet blend into a harmony of man, machine, strategy and system, which defines it as a mega city. Megacities examines the infrastructure of eight iconic locations around the world: Las Vegas, Mexico City, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Sao Paulo, Mumbai and New York. Through dramatic storytelling, unparalleled access and sophisticated computer graphics blended seamlessly with live action, Megacities takes viewers beyond the monuments - and into the machinery - that is the true, living marvel of each mega city.
Hong Kong, officially known as Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has an area of 1,104 km2 (426 sq mi) and shares its northern border with the Canton Province of Mainland China. Home to around 7,200,000 Hongkongers and other nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated regions.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. After it was occupied by Japan in the Second World War (1941–45), the British resumed control until 30 June 1997. As a result of negotiations between China and Britain, Hong Kong was transferred to the People's Republic of China under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration. The territory became China's first provincial-level special administrative region with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems.
In the late 1970s, Hong Kong became a major entrepôt in Asia-Pacific. The territory has developed into a major global trade hub and financial centre, and is regarded as a world city. The 45th-largest economy in the world, Hong Kong ranks top ten in GDP (PPP) per capita. Hong Kong is one of the three most important financial centres alongside New York and London. The territory has a high Human Development Index and is ranked highly in the Global Competitiveness Report. It has been named the freest market economy by the Heritage Foundation Index of Economic Freedom. The service economy, characterised by low taxation and free trade, has been regarded as one of the world's most laissez-faire economic policies, and the currency, the Hong Kong dollar, is the 13th most traded currency in the world. The territory has the most severe income inequality among advanced economies.

Canadian community organizations urging Canadian Government to act on the Standing Committee’s recommendations on Hong Kong’s democratic future June 16, 2015
Following the November 19, 2014 all-party motion in support of Hong Kong and two phases of hearing in March and May 2015 on the situation of Hong Kong, the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development presented to the House of Commons the report of the parliamentary study titled “Hong Kong’s Democratic Future” on June 15, 2015. This report was released just two days prior to the commencement of Hong Kong Legislative Council’s discussion and voting on the controversial political reform on the election of Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
Three recommendations were made by the Standing Committee to Canadian Government as a result of this study:
1. The Committee recommends that the Government of Canada state its support for the democratic aspirations of Hong Kong people, including the need for genuine universal suffrage in the election of their political leaders.
2. The Committee recommends that the Government of Canada reiterate its support for the ‘one country, two systems’ principle, and for the 1984 Joint Declaration of the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of the People's Republic of China on the Question of Hong Kong.
3. The Committee recommends that the Government of Canada encourage dialogue that can lead to governance reforms in Hong Kong that are broadly accepted by all concerned.
Canada-Hong Kong Link, the Canadian community organization that is instrumental in making this parliamentary study happen in collaboration with organizations from other parts of Canada particularly Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal, applaud the content and recommendations of the report as being comprehensive, objective and reflective of the aspirations of Hong Kong people and Canadians towards the situation in Hong Kong and the roles Canada should play in promoting true democracy and meaningful dialogue there.
The situation in Hong Kong matters to Canada as we have a long-standing connection to Hong Kong in terms of historical, people-to-people, and commercial ties. According to the Canadian General Consulate in Hong Kong, the territory boasts one of the largest Canadian communities abroad (an estimated 295,000). “This community, along with some 500,000 people of Hong Kong descent in Canada, plays a dynamic role in building vibrant bilateral relations”.
The effort of the parliamentarians demonstrates the commitment of Canada to uphold the Canadian core values of democracy, freedom and rule of law and its legal and moral obligation to Hong Kong people as an endorsing country of the Joint Declaration in 1984.
In view of forthcoming voting on the proposed political reform by HKSAR Legislative Council as early as June 17, all Canadian community organizations concerned about Hong Kong urge the Canadian Government to act on the Committee’s recommendations to show its timely support to political reform with genuine universal suffrage, and to urge the People’s Republic of China to honour and respect what they have promised Hong Kong citizens in the Joint Declaration and Basic Law in respect to ‘One Country Two Systems’, ‘Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong’ with a ‘High Degree of Autonomy’. They sincerely hope that ‘Canada stands for what is right and just, regardless of whether it is popular, convenient or expedient’.
