Sally Burke is a mother from Hull. But to see her daughter – 13-year-old Maisie – she is forced to make a 118-mile roundtrip to Sheffield, where Maisie is currently sectioned under the Mental Health Act and receiving treatment for paranoid schizophrenia.
A national shortage of hospital beds means people in crisis are being shunted all over the UK for hospital care. This, tragically, includes children. If troubled young people having to wait for two years for mental health treatment wasn't bad enough, that they can often only be admitted to psychiatric wards that are miles away from their homes and families is even more terrifying.
The figures surrounding the mental health of young Brits are alarming. The number of children being admitted to hospital for self-harm is at a five-year high. Admissions of girls aged 10-14 have increased by 93 percent in the last four years, to 5,953, while there's been a rise of 45 percent in boys. Within this same timeframe, NHS spending on children's mental health services in England has fallen by approximately £50 million.
These have left local services in a desperate position, and the human consequence of this is felt by people like Sally and Maisie. We join the former as she makes the trek to Sheffield, its emotional toll only increased by the knowledge that just a mile away from her home is a unit that could have housed Maisie had its overnight care facility not been shut two years ago.

Alok Pareek in an interview with Heidi Brand, "Homeopathy from Childhood to Old Age” March 14-16, 2014 in Bad Krozingen - 1 DVD
There are surely very few homeopaths with such profound experience in the treatment of severe illness as Alok Pareek. Homeopaths and state-of-theart clinicians work side-by-side at his 60-bed clinic in Agra, India, as well as
treating around 200 in-patients per day. Pareek‘s inimitable books on emergency medicine, cancer and severe pathology offer us a unique insight into the breadth and depth of this doctor‘s knowledge and experience.
In this interview Alok Pareek reveals what it is that gives him confidence in homeopathy. He clearly demonstrates how the study of the classics inspires confidence, first when treating acute cases and then for chronic cases. Using the example of a patient suffering from a heart attack, he describes how he proceeds in emergencies and the significance of homeopathy in acute medical care.
In the treatment of cancer too, Pareek sticks to the basics as described in Hahnemann‘s Organon. He stresses the importance of initial remedies and organotropic treatment, warning that a constitutional remedy should not be given at the wrong time. Despite expressing such confidence in homeopathy, he cautions us to recognize our limits and to always proceed with prudence.
It is a source of both inspiration and joy to see this accomplished doctor talk from his tremendous wealth of experience. Here we can learn from him at first-hand, gaining valuable knowledge for the treatment of severe and
threatening illnesses in particular.

Rimworld is an Indie Game where you try to establish an interstellar colony on some backwater hellhole. You must survive raiders, eclipses, solar flares, and crop failures along the way. I myself compare it a lot to Dwarf Fortress though with an easier to use UI. Though it does do it's own unique thing.
Rimworld is current in pre-Alpha. To play it in Pre-Alpha you'll need to pay 30 bucks. But if you can wait till the official Alpha release the price will be 20.
Rimworld is created and published by Ludeon Studios. It is available on PC, Mac, and Linex. It is also currently in greenlight on Steam.

This documentary will show how clinical depression does not discriminate. It will not just fade with time nor will you be able to control your thoughts and remove the depression.
Depression is serious and it is deadly.
What is the difference between clinical or major depression & feeling depressed?
Sooner or later, everyone gets the blues. Feeling sadness, loneliness, or grief when you go through a difficult life experience is part of being human. And most of the time, you can continue to function. You know that in time you will bounce back, and you do.
But what if you don’t bounce back? What if your feelings of sadness linger, are excessive, or interfere with your work, sleep, or recreation? What if you’re feeling fatigue or worthlessness, or experiencing weight changes along with your sadness? You may be experiencing major depression.
Also known as clinical depression, major depressive disorder, or unipolar depression, major depression is a medical condition that goes beyond life’s ordinary ups and downs. Almost 18.8 million American adults experience depression each year, and women are nearly twice as likely as men to develop major depression. People with depression cannot simply “pull themselves together” and get better. Treatment with counseling, medication, or both is key to recovery.
Major Depression: What Are the Symptoms?
Depression shows itself in different ways. Common depression symptoms are:
Depressed mood, sadness, or an “empty” feeling, or appearing sad or tearful to others
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed
Significant weight loss when not dieting, or significant weight gain (for example, more than 5% of body weight in a month)
Inability to sleep or excessive sleeping
Restlessness or irritation (irritable mood may be a symptom in children or adolescents too), or feelings of “dragging”
Fatigue or loss of energy
Feelings of worthlessness, or excessive or inappropriate guilt
Difficulty thinking or concentrating, or indecisiveness
Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or specific plan for committing suicide
Depression Treatment: When Should You Get Help?
If you have five or more of these symptoms for most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks, and the symptoms are severe enough to interfere with your daily activities, you may have major depression. It’s important to talk to your doctor about treatments to start helping you feel better.

The father of a Russian opposition activist has told the BBC he believes the sudden, severe illness of his son is suspicious.
Vladimir Kara-Murza, a dual Russian and British citizen, collapsed in Moscow last Tuesday. The 33-year-old was in a coma for almost a week and has been diagnosed with acute kidney failure.
He has now regained consciousness but still has difficulty communicating; tests to determine what caused his mysterious illness are continuing.
"He was perfectly healthy before, he'd had no chronic illnesses," the activist's father, also Vladimir, says. "It's clear he's been poisoned. But by what or who, we don't know."
Vladimir Kara-Murza was a close friend of Kremlin critic Boris Nemtsov, who was shot dead in Moscow in February.
'Nuclear explosion'
The chief doctor at the Moscow hospital treating Mr Kara-Murza told the BBC that tests revealed traces of an antidepressant.
He speculated that the citalopram, which the activist was taking, may have accumulated in his body if he had a prior, undetected kidney problem.
It may also have reacted with an antihistamine Mr Kara-Murza used for hay fever.
His family are sceptical.
"It was just a nasal spray," his father points out, unconvinced that a few drops could have triggered the "nuclear explosion" in his son's kidneys.
Other doctors also say his symptoms are not typical of a citalopram overdose.
"It is not the usual picture, whether an overdose is deliberate or inadvertent," believes Eran Segal. Called in by family friends, the Israeli doctor examined the activist shortly after he was rushed to hospital.
"It could be a severe infection or maybe some other toxin we are not aware of," Dr Segal told the BBC. "But there is no evidence of the cause."
After living abroad for some years, Vladimir Kara-Murza now works for the opposition organisation Open Russia run by oligarch-in-exile Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
His most recent Facebook post is an advert for an Open Russia film alleging serious human rights abuses and corruption in Chechnya.
His father says he was chief "organiser" of the project, but never mentioned receiving any threats.
'One in a million' chance
While the "picture" of symptoms in such a young man is unusual, Dr Segal stresses that it is not necessarily suspicious.

Children of Darkness
Children of Darkness is an Oscar nominated 1983 documentary film produced and written by Richard Kotuk and Ara Chekmayan. It explored the topic of juvenile psychiatry - an acute lack of mental health care in America for seriously emotionally disturbed youth.
Many children in these institutions were simply warehoused and the common basic form of therapy was drugs, which didn't really help the kid

Children of Darkness is an Oscar nominated 1983 documentary film produced and written by Richard Kotuk and Ara Chekmayan. It explored the topic of juvenile psychiatry - an acute lack of mental health care in America for seriously emotionally disturbed youth.
Many children in these institutions were simply warehoused and the common basic form of therapy was drugs, which didn't really help the kids but merely controlled them. The film not only uncovered the mistreatments in mental institutions but it also captured the cold realization that mental illness can happen to anyone. Public mental institutions were not just for the poor. Children from middle class families and upper middle class families often ended up there due to inadequate insurance money and dwindled savings.

Title: Schizophrenia: Stolen Minds, Stolen Lives
Running Time: 52 Minutes
Genre: Psychology
Schizophrenia is a serious disorder which affects how a person thinks, feels and acts. Someone with schizophrenia may have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is imaginary; may be unresponsive or withdrawn; and may have difficulty expressing normal emotions in social situations.
Contrary to public perception, schizophrenia is not split personality or multiple personality.
The vast majority of people with schizophrenia are not violent and do not pose a danger to others.
Schizophrenia is not caused by childhood experiences, poor parenting or lack of willpower, nor are the symptoms identical for each person.
This program examines schizophrenia, an often heartbreaking mental illness that can rob people of the chance to pursue normal goals.
After noting that one percent of the world's population suffers from this disability and describing its symptoms, experts discuss how this insidious disease affects the human brain and a person's ability to function socially.
Fortunately, some afflicted individuals are able to achieve a high state of functioning, including Dr. John Nash Jr., who won a Nobel Prize in Economics. However, most spend their lives struggling to cope with hallucinatory voices and the potent drugs designed to control all of the troubling symptoms of the illness.
Case studies and interviews help illustrate how various people are trying to live with this disease.
_____________________
The signs of schizophrenia are different for everyone. Symptoms may develop slowly over months or years, or may appear very abruptly. The disease may come and go in cycles of relapse and remission.
Behaviors that are early warning signs of schizophrenia include:
Hearing or seeing something that isn’t there
A constant feeling of being watched
Peculiar or nonsensical way of speaking or writing
Strange body positioning
Feeling indifferent to very important situations
Deterioration of academic or work performance
A change in personal hygiene and appearance
A change in personality
Increasing withdrawal from social situations
Irrational, angry or fearful response to loved ones
Inability to sleep or concentrate
Inappropriate or bizarre behavior
Extreme preoccupation with religion or the occult
Schizophrenia affects about 1% of the world population. In the United States one in a hundred people, about 2.5 million, have this disease. It knows no racial, cultural or economic boundaries. Symptoms usually appear between the ages of 13 and 25, but often appear earlier in males than females.
If you or a loved one experience several of these symptoms for more than two weeks, seek help immediately.

The knowledge gap this training addresses includes information every vaccine provider should know about influenza, the various influenza vaccines, ACIP recommendations, storage and handling requirements, and administration considerations. The annual recommendation for influenza vaccination means that healthcare providers should remain up-to-date with their knowledge of influenza vaccination and practices. Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Flu can also result in serious outcomes such as hospitalization or death. Older adults, young children and people with certain health conditions are at high risk for serious complications from flu. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.

What relevance do near-death experiences in ICU patients have for the experiencer and their health care provider? What impact, if any, does a regular use of Hemi-Sync® have on those same providers? Is it possible that a new way of thinking about phenomena of consciousness, long reported but often discarded as hallucination by the medical professional community, could help heal and transform patients when their "strange experiences" are held with respect instead of being told they didn't happen?
Through several anecdotal accounts of real patient experiences recounted to her over the past two decades, as well as her own personal observations of how Hemi-Sync enhanced the traditional medical skills available to her, Laurin Bellg, MD, Critical Care Specialist, explores a potential new landscape of patient care that she believes could transform how we interact with patients who've had not only near-death but also out-of-body experiences around trauma and severe illness.
At the end of her presentation Dr. Bellg includes the trailer of an educational DVD prepared for health care providers by Blue Marble Films in collaboration with the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS). This film is intended to educate health professionals about how to talk with patients about their near-death experiences -- even if they don't believe in them themselves!

Laurin Bellg, MD, is a critical care specialist working in two intensive care units at Appleton Medical Center and Theda Clark Medical Center in Appleton, Wisconsin. After obtaining her medical degree at the University of Tennessee, she completed an internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin before moving to Chicago to receive her fellowship training in critical care at Rush Medical Center. As a critical care physician working in the intensive care unit, Dr Bellg's nearly twenty-year professional life of being present at the bedside of patients near death has brought her face-to-face with a variety of phenomena of consciousness. She has written various articles and stories about these experiences.
Her most recent collaboration was with John Kortum, past residential facilitator at The Monroe Institute and author of The Kortum Technique, to produce a documentary video on the presence and application of intuition in medicine. She has also worked with the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) and Blue Marble Films to create an educational video for health care providers on how to talk with patients about their experiences.
Her involvement with The Monroe Institute includes training as an Outreach Facilitator and involvement in the Local Chapter Network of TMI, where she serves on the Leadership Council.
