Webster Tarpley is an American historian, economist, journalist, lecturer and a critic of U.S. foreign and domestic policy.
He received a BA degree summa cum laude in English and Italian from Princeton University in 1966. While a student at Princeton he became a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and was a Fulbright Scholar at University of Turin in Italy. Tarpley also obtained a MA degree in humanities from Skidmore College, as well as a PhD from the Catholic University of America in History.
As a European based journalist in the 1980s, Tarpley wrote a study on the assassination of Prime Minister Aldo Moro. The study claimed that the murder was a false flag operation orchestrated by Propaganda Due (a Masonic Lodge) with the cooperation of senior members of the Italian government secret services that was blamed on the Red Brigades.
As an activist historian he first became widely known for his book George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography (1992), a masterpiece of research which is still a must read.
During 2008, he warned of the dangers of an Obama presidency controlled by Wall Street with Obama: The Postmodern Coup, The Making of a Manchurian Candidate and Barack H. Obama: The Unauthorized Biography. His interest in economics is reflected in Surviving the Cataclysm: Your Guide Through the Worst Financial Crisis in Human History Against Oligarchy. He is currently completing a study of Pearl Harbor as an episode in Wall Street's war against President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the New Deal, and FDR's economic bill of rights. This week we go the Greek island of Lesbos. Normally a haven for tourists at this time of year, this summer the island has been inundated with desperate migrants hoping for a new life in Europe - most of them refugees fleeing the war in Syria... Lesbos and the other Greek islands have become the front line in Europe’s migrant crisis, with around 3000 people arriving every day. Our Observers are Eric and Philippa are a British couple trying to do what they can to help.

In this edition of Comment, we ask: How much is the UN to blame for Yemen's humanitarian crisis?
Saudi Arabia has violated the latest ceasefire in war-torn Yemen just minutes after its commencement in the impoverished Arab country.
Meanwhile, the United Nations special envoy to Yemen has called for respecting a five-day ceasefire in Yemen in a bid to boost the delivery of sorely-needed aid.
Saudi Arabia started its military aggression against Yemen on March 26 - without a UN mandate - in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement, which currently controls the capital, Sana’a, and other major provinces, and to restore power to the country's fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who is a staunch ally of Riyadh.
Meanwhile, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization recently warned of a “catastrophic” humanitarian situation in Yemen, saying more than 15 million Yemenis are suffering from food insecurity in the wake of the Saudi airstrikes.
According to the latest UN figures, the Saudi military campaign has so far claimed the lives of over 1,400 people and injured close to 6,000 others, roughly half of them civilians.

EU pouring petrol on the migration flame & wondering why people risk lives to come to Europe
The imposition of the EU’s ‘Economic Partnership Agreements’ will cause chaos and instability throughout Africa forcing a further wave of migration, which has already led to a humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean.
These EU-wide trade agreements are pushing people from the land in Africa and forcing them to migrate to Europe via ports in Libya. So rather than trying to stop people crossing the Mediterranean, EU policy is compounding the problem.
These trade agreements have, in part, led to the migration that we now see building up in North Africa. A situation which will only get worse unless we urgently review the local economic impact of the Economic Partnership Agreements.
As currently structured these agreements benefit major multinational food corporations and if carried through will devastate African farmers, destroy their local markets and lead to long-term food insecurity, unemployment and conflict - the main drivers of migration from Africa.
We need to deal with the migration issue in a comprehensive way by ensuring debate, review and reform of the Economic Partnership Agreements on the floor of the Dáil and Seanad.
There is currently a review of trade policy at EU level, and there can be flexibility built into these agreements to make sure they don’t destroy markets in sensitive industries, particularly in agriculture and food.
Otherwise, we will undermine any plan to try to curb the mass migration that we are currently witnessing. Instead of solving the problem the EU is pouring petrol on the flames and then wondering why people want to risk their lives to come to Europe.

David Cameron, who is a professor of political science and the director of the Yale Program in European Union Studies, talks bout the refugee crisis in the European Union. Europe is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Day after day, thousands of refugees from Syria, Iraq and other conflicts have undertaken long and perilous journeys, both across the Mediterranean and through the Balkans in the hope of finding shelter and obtaining asylum in the European Union. Every day, we hear of one EU state after another instituting border controls, some quite drastic, to stop the flow of migrants. And day after day, we hear about disagreements among the members of the EU over how to respond to the crisis, including about how to share in the burden of receiving the migrants.

UN agencies are warning that nearly 1.9 million people in Madagascar don't have enough to eat. Almost half the children under the age of five suffer from chronic malnutrition, that's the fourth highest rate in the world. According to recent reports families are dealing with food shortages by cutting down on daily meals, taking children out of school and scavenging for food in the wild. Despite this, aid to this African island nation has steadily gone down over the years. Madagascar's ongoing humanitarian crisis often doesn't even make it on the list of international aid initiatives. So why is that?

On-going conflict and a devastating lack of services and infrastructure have created a humanitarian crisis of immense proportions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Since 2009, almost 3 million people have been displaced within the country and half a million refugees remain in neighbouring countries. The European Commission funds aid efforts for people who have been forcibly displaced in the troubled Kivu region. One of the European Commission's partners, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), is helping uprooted families get their lives back on track by providing them with food assistance.
Maman Joyeux, mother of six, has escaped from violence in her home village and is now living with her family in Masambo, North Kivu. Thanks to help from NRC, she is able to plant seeds and provide food for her children.

Humanitarian Emergency in Donbas: Warning issued over impending humanitarian crisis in east Ukraine
A ceasefire was renewed in east Ukraine on September 1st, brining fighting there between Ukrainian troops and Russian-backed militants to some of the lowest levels seen throughout the 18-month conflict.
But, stopping the guns is only part of the equation. Many homes and business in the region remain in a poor state because of damage sustained in the conflict. What that means, says Christopher Miller of Mashable, is a looming humanitarian crisis as winter approaches.
