Two years ago, Chad Hurley, one of YouTube’s cofounders, made a big mistake. Despite signing a confidentiality agreement regarding the engagement between Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, he went ahead and recorded a video of the famous marriage proposal, and then used it as leverage for promoting a new website that he was launching at the time.
Back then, the leaking of the video was a minor scandal in the celebrity world, and even though there was some media buzz about it, nothing came out for a couple of years. Today, however, it’s been revealed that Kardashian and West have been actively fighting Hurley in court and have just sorted out a settlement to the tune of over $400,000.
The whole incident was caused by the fact that Kim and Kanye apparently wanted to keep the footage of their proposal exclusive for “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”, whose operators were the only ones legally allowed to take videos and photos of the proposal, let alone put them up on the Internet. And yet, Hurley apparently recorded Kanye West in the process of his proposal, and ended up posting the video to MixBit, his new service that he left YouTube to work on.
Details of the whole incident were somewhat unclear, but Kim and Kanye did claim that Hurley had done some questionable things to work his way into the proposal, and apparently he had to manipulate them to get a chance to see the event go down live. Because of this, they felt particularly cheated and lied to, and they were reportedly quite distraught over the whole leaking and wanted to take things as far as the law allowed them to.
The couple apparently took various precautions to give themselves some privacy, going as far as to request everyone present to sign a confidentiality agreement, and taking the smartphones of people who were expected to try recording something. And yet, in the end, they apparently didn’t manage to prevent everyone from capturing the event, as the leaked video quickly made the rounds all over the Internet and became a brief sensation while it was going around.
There hasn’t been much in the news about the incident ever since the settlement was announced, and we likely won’t be hearing about it anytime soon either. The way these settlements usually work is that one party agrees to pay what’s asked of them in exchange for having the entire lawsuit dropped, so Kanye and Kim probably can’t discuss the settlement too much in public anyway. That’s part of the whole point, and we can only imagine that Hurley wouldn’t be too happy to see his name in the news in connection with this incident yet again.
Meanwhile, the relationship between Kim and Kanye has been going relatively smoothly, despite some initial claims that the two weren’t going to last very long due to some inherent differences between their personalities. That’s not really the case in the end, as they’ve been living together quite successfully.
What’s more, Kim is currently rumored to be pregnant and about six months in, but she’s been facing a lot of speculation over her pregnancy and her plans for the future. People have been making various comments about her body and particularly her weight with regards to her alleged pregnancy too, something which she was apparently not very fond of as she’s been speaking out against these comments.
