Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has defended his government's actions in the region since the uprising against his rule, which erupted in 2011.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen, Mr Assad denied that his forces had dropped barrel bombs indiscriminately on rebel-held areas, killing thousands of civilians, and dismissed as propaganda a statement by the UN that his government often blocks access to besieged areas for relief organisations.
The Syrian leader also denied that there was a direct dialogue with the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State but confirmed that "general messages" were sometimes passed via third parties.

In statements to the journalists following the meeting with a French delegation, including a number of parliamentarians, intellectuals, and media men, headed by member of the French National Assembly Thierry Mariani, President al-Assad said, in response to a question about his reaction on what happened in Paris on Friday “First of all, we offer our condolences to the French families that lost dear members yesterday, and we are the closest people to this situation to understand what happened yesterday in France, because we have been suffering from this kind of terrorism for the last five years in Syria.
“And what happened in France yesterday cannot be separated from what happened in Beirut two days ago, because this is terrorism. That’s why you shouldn’t look at terrorism as separate arenas, like looking at Syria’s arena, Yemen, Libya, France. Actually, it’s one arena all around the world.”
Asked about where the Syrian intelligence services have any indication or information that either the people who committed this act came from Syria or were in contact with any group in Syria, the President said “No, we don’t have any information about what happened, but it’s not about the names, and who went and who didn’t. We warned about what’s going to happen in Europe three years ago, and we said don’t mess with the fault line in Syria. It’s going to be like an earthquake that will reverberate around the world, and unfortunately the European officials didn’t pay attention to what we said. They thought that we are threatening, and they didn’t learn from what happened at the beginning of this year, from Charlie Hebdo.”
He added “Just giving statements that you are against terrorism means nothing. You have to go and fight terrorism, you have to pursue the correct and right policies, that’s what they have to do.”
In his response to a question whether Syria is ready to fight with France against terrorism if they ask and help the French intelligence services, President Assad said
“They don’t have to ask; they only have to be serious. This is where we are ready to fight terrorism with them.”
“We are ready to fight terrorism with whoever wants to really fight terrorism, and the French government is not serious yet,” he added.
In a message he was asked to send to the French President Francois Hollande, President al-Assad said “Work for the sake and the interest of your people. And the question that any Frenchman would ask today: did the French policy during the last five years do any good to the French people? Actually, no. So, the first thing I’ll ask is to work for the interest of the French people, and if he wants to do that, he has to change his policy.”
Asked about the condition for the Syrian government and the French government to work together, or for the Syrian intelligence services to work with the French intelligence services, President Assad said “You cannot talk about intelligence cooperation without political cooperation. You cannot talk about intelligence cooperation in order to fight terrorism while at the same time your policies, the policies of the same government, are going in the direction of supporting terrorism. That’s what I meant by being serious.”

(PRAGUE, Reuters, 30 Nov 2015) - There are terrorists among the Syrian refugees making their way to Europe, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told Czech Television in an interview, excerpts of which were broadcast on Monday (30 Nov 2015).
Asked whether Europeans should fear refugees from Syria, Assad said: "It's a mixture. The majority, they are good Syrians, they are patriots... But of course you have infiltration of terrorists among them, that is true."
Czech Television said it had interviewed Assad in Damascus and would air the piece in full on Tuesday (1 Dec 2015).
Hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees have reached Europe this year, often without documents, sparking fears in many countries that Islamic militants may be among them.
Islamic State's attack on Paris on Nov. 13 has heightened calls in the EU for more controls on people arriving.
Two of the Paris attackers had their fingerprints taken while traveling through Greece in October, a Paris prosecutor said. One was identified as Ahmad al-Mohammad from a Syrian passport found near his body, although it was not clear whether the passport was genuine or stolen.
Turkey has promised to help stem the flow of migrants to Europe in return for cash, visas and renewed talks on joining the EU, in a deal struck on Sunday.

The Kremlin says the two leaders discussed their joint military campaign against Daesh terrorists in Syria on Tuesday. Assad thanked Russia for supporting Damascus, saying terrorism is an obstacle to a political resolution in Syria. He said without Russia’s military campaign, terrorism would have swallowed up a much greater area in the region. Putin, for his part, hailed the Syrian people for standing up to the Daesh QUOTE almost on their own. He said Russia is ready to contribute to the political process in Syria. Putin noted that Moscow cannot allow its citizens fighting alongside terrorist groups to return to Russia. This is Assad’s first foreign visit since the Syrian conflict broke out in 2011. Russia launched its anti-ISIL airstrikes in Syria on September 30.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday condemned the deadly terror attacks that took place in Paris on Friday night.
Assad made remarks in Damascus after meeting with a visiting French parliament delegation. He also said the attacks, which killed at least 129 people, were inextricably linked with the deadly blasts in Beirut the day before.
"We offer condolences to the families of the victims. We are familiar with this type of situation as we have suffered from this kind of terrorism for five years. What happened in Paris yesterday cannot be separated from what happened in Beirut two days ago because both were terrorism," said Assad.
The visiting French parliament delegation met with People's Council of Syria speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham in Damascus on Thursday.
The purpose of the visit was to discuss cooperation between the two sides in fighting terrorist groups in Syria as well as possible political solutions to the Syrian crisis.
"The problem is not to apply for aid, but to show sincerity. We are ready to cooperate with any sincere countries to fight against terrorism, but the French government is not sincere enough," Assad said.

Russia will use more advanced military force against terror groups in Syria "if necessary," President Vladimir Putin said Saturday.
His comments came a day after the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution that supports an international effort to find a political solution to the 5-year-old civil war in Syria.
Russia has supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but the United States wants him removed. The two countries, however, have found common ground in launching airstrikes against the terror group ISIS based in Syria.
Putin focused on his own military's performance in Syria.
"We see how effectively our pilots and intelligence officers work in Syria and how effectively they coordinate their efforts," Putin said at a Kremlin event honoring security service employees, according to the Sputnik state-run news agency.
"At that, they are diversified, and the army, navy and aviation use the most modern weapons," Putin said.

The Syrian President and his wife have visited a church in Damascus, just two kilometres from an area held by rebels and not far from where mortars fell just hours earlier.
This as the UN Security Council overcame past differences and approved the time-frame and conditions for international peace talks on Syria.
But there is still no agreement on the future of the Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, and who will represent the opposition at ceasefire negotiations.
Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, said: “I do not think that everyone who is there on the ground should be invited to participate in the talks.
“Those who should be invited are only Syrians that represent the opposition – the armed opposition who are patriotic. But not those who are implicated in terrible actions perpetrated by ISIS or al-Nusra.”
John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, said: “There are still some issues that we’re trying to work through, and one of them is the percentage of the Russian strikes that are actually going after the opposition, versus Daesh (ISIL).
“And so, we’re trying to work on that. But if 80 percent are hitting opposition rather than hitting Daesh, it’s a challenge, and we’re trying to resolve that, so that we can cooperate.”
After almost five years of conflict that has killed more than 250,000 people, diplomats says the peace talks are likely to start in mid to late January.
Details on who will monitor any eventual ceasefire is also still to be worked out.

John Kerry, US State Secretary: "President Assad in our judgment, and not everybody shares, this, but the majority of people in the ISSG believe that President Assad has lost the credibility to be able to unite the country and to provide the moral credibility to be able to govern it into the future. That logic is compelling and it provides a unifying principle for most of the people in our efforts going forward."

United Nations, Dec 19 (ANI): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously agreed on a resolution endorsing an international roadmap for Syria peace process, a rare show of unity among major powers on a conflict that has claimed more than a quarter million lives. The resolution came after Russia and the United States clinched a deal. The two powers have had very different views on what should happen in Syria, where Islamic State militants control considerable territory that Western governments suspect has been a launch pad for attacks on Western nations and Russia. Syrian United Nations Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said that some in the 15-nation council did not adhere to the language in the resolution. The United Kingdom and France made clear that differences were still there on the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a close ally of Russia and Iran who Western countries want ousted. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the talks between the Syrian government and opposition would only succeed if there were credible guarantees on Assad's departure. The resolution however did not touch on the question of Assad's fate.

U.N. Security Council members unanimously approved a U.N. resolution Friday endorsing a peace process for Syria including a cease-fire and talks between the Damascus government and the opposition, but the text makes no mention of the most contentious issue — the future role of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
The resolution makes clear that the blueprint it endorses will not end the conflict, deep into its fifth year with well over 300,000 killed, because "terrorist groups," including the Islamic State group and the al-Qaida-linked al-Nusra Front, are not part of the cease-fire.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry praised "the unprecedented degree of unity" in the council, which has been stymied in the past over a political solution in Syria, and called the resolution "a milestone."
Foreign ministers from 17 countries met for more than five hours on how to implement their call in Vienna last month for a cease-fire and the start of negotiations between the government and opposition in early January. At the same time, diplomats worked to overcome divisions on the text of the resolution.

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution which endorses an international bid to end the crisis in the war-ravaged Syria.
The resolution calls for formal peace talks and a nationwide ceasefire to be launched in early January. It also says that only the Syrian people will decide the future of their country. The plan urges the UN to convene formal talks on Syria transition between government and all opposition groups. It also emphasizes that terrorist groups like Daesh will have no place in the talks. US Secretary of State John Kerry said sharp difference still remains on the fate of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. The resolution has been described as a rare gesture of unity on the Syria peace process by a council often deeply divided over the issue. Syria’s crisis has claimed the lives of over a quarter million people since 2011.

President Obama says that to achieve a lasting victory over the Islamic State group, the Syrian civil war needs to end. At a White House news conference Friday, Obama said "lawless areas" in the Middle East must be eliminated as havens for the extremists. Obama says Syrian President Bashar Assad will have to leave if the civil war in Syria is to end and the country is to have a non-sectarian future. Adding that Assad backers like Russia and Iran have equities in Syria that must be protected if they are to support a political transition. Obama said, the crisis in Syria could have been blunted if Assad had recognized that he had lost legitimacy as a leader and had stepped down several years ago. Assad's decision to put himself ahead of the best interests of his country is the primary reason for the rise of the Islamic State militant group.

U.N. council endorses Syria peace plan; no agreement on Assad's fate
The United Nations Security Council on Friday unanimously agreed a resolution endorsing an international roadmap for a Syria peace process, a rare show of unity among major powers on a conflict that has claimed more than a quarter million lives.
"This council is sending a clear message to all concerned that the time is now to stop the killing in Syria and lay the groundwork for a government that the long-suffering people of that battered land can support," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told the 15-nation council after the vote.
The resolution came after Russia and the United States clinched a deal on a text. The two powers have had very different views on what should happen in Syria, where Islamic State militants control considerable territory that Western governments suspect has been a launch-pad for attacks on Western nations and Russia.
Kerry made clear that there were still differences on the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a close ally of Russia and Iran who Western countries want ousted.
"We are under no illusions about the obstacles that exist. There obviously remain sharp differences within the international community, especially about the future of President Assad," Kerry added.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said about the resolution: "This is a clear response to attempts to impose a solution from the outside on Syrians on any issues, including those regarding its president."
The resolution does not touch on the question of Assad's fate.
The text called for the U.N. to present the council with options for monitoring a ceasefire within one month of adoption of the resolution. It also backed a timeline previously agreed in Vienna for talks between the government on a unity government and opposition, and eventual elections.
The talks between Syria's government and opposition should begin in early January, the resolution said. It also endorsed the continued battle to defeat Islamic State militants who have seized large swaths of both Syria and neighboring Iraq.
Agreement on a resolution came on the sidelines of a meeting of the so-called International Syria Support Group at New York's Palace Hotel.
'CHAMPIONS OF DEMOCRACY'
During a break in Friday's talks, Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said he had presented a document compiling the groups each country attending considered to be a "terrorist" organization.
"Each country sent its own view. Some countries sent 15 to 20, others sent more," he told reporters. "It's a launch pad ... There will be follow-up steps to set the criteria (for which are to be labeled terrorist groups)."
The road map, which also calls for a nationwide ceasefire that would not apply to Islamic State, Nusra Front and some other militant groups, was worked out in two rounds of ministerial talks in Vienna.
Diplomats said the main problem in the negotiations on the resolution involved Russian and Iranian concerns about how to refer to a bloc of opposition groups that would join U.N.-led peace talks with the Syrian government set to begin in January.
Western officials say a recent meeting in Saudi Arabia of opposition figures made significant headway in coming up with an opposition bloc, though Russia and Iran have questioned the legitimacy of the Saudi-hosted discussions.
Foreign ministers from 17 countries, including Lavrov, Kerry and other European and Middle Eastern ministers, as well as top diplomats from regional rivals Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran, were in New York for the Syria meetings.
In a dig at Saudi Arabia, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote in The Guardian on Friday it was "utterly absurd that those who have denied their own population the most rudimentary tenets of democracy ... are now self-declared champions of democracy in Syria."
"Their democracy, however, is not to give Syrians a voice, but instead to thwart the political process by stonewalling a ceasefire, while pushing for self-proclaimed al Qaeda affiliates to have a prominent place at the negotiating table," he wrote. "Only ballots – not bullets – can ultimately usher in a new era in Syria."
The Riyadh conference agreed to set up a 34-member secretariat to supervise peace talks, and that committee will also select the opposition's negotiating team.
Diplomats said that at previous rounds of Syria talks in Vienna, Zarif and his Saudi counterpart engaged in several heated exchanges about Syria.
Earlier this week diplomats said some progress had been made on the most difficult sticking point in the talks: Assad's fate.
They said Russia had indicated it had no problem with the eventual ouster of Assad at the end of a transition period, though it would not admit that publicly.

The Netherlands will be acting illegally if it decides to bomb militant Islamic targets in Syria, the country’s president Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with the Dutch daily current affairs programme Nieuwsuur in Damascus.
Assad: 'This is illegal. This is against the international law. We are a sovereign country. If you are serious about fighting terrorism, what is the obstacle for that government to call the Syrian government, to say “let’s cooperate in fighting terrorism?”
'The only obstacle is that the Western policy today towards Syria is “we need to isolate this state, that president, so we cannot deal with him.” Okay, you cannot reach anything then.'
Nieuwsuur also asked president Assad why hundreds of Jihadis from Belgium and the Netherlands come to Syria.
Assad: ‘The most important question is: why did you have them in Europe? Coming, that’s natural; when you have chaos, when Syria has been turned into a hotbed for terrorism because Europe and Turkey and Saudi Arabia and Qatar and those countries supported terrorists in different ways, of course you’re going to have chaos, and it’s going to be a nexus for terrorism. That’s natural for this, how to say, fertile soil, to attract terrorists from the rest of the world. But the question: why did you have them in Europe? You didn’t deal with terrorism in a realistic base.’

Barack Obama G20 Speech 2015 FULL Barack Obama News Conference G20 Summit Antalya, Turkey Barack Obama G20 Speech Antalya, Turkey FULL Barack Obama News Conference G20 Summit Barack Obama G20 Speech FULL Barack Obama News Conference G20 Summit Antalya, Turkey U.S. President Barack Obama doubled down on his foreign policy strategy toward Syria Monday, saying during a closing speech at the Group of 20, or G-20, summit in Antalya, Turkey, that the efforts in the region to combat the growing threat of the Islamic State are accelerating but that he does not plan on altering the overall strategy. After Russia and the United States reached an agreement to mediate a ceasefire between Syria's opposition and ruling regime, Obama said his administration would not put more troops on the ground in Syria.
His remarks come after a tumultuous weekend in the wake of a
Obama asked that people keep in mind that the threat posed by terrorist groups is not new, and that his administration has been worried about attacks like those that took place in Paris Friday since he took office nearly seven years ago. On Monday, he said the threat of terrorism is difficult to approach because the enemy is willing to kill themselves during attacks.
“If you have a handful of people who don’t mind dying they can kill a lot of people. That’s one of the challenges of terrorism,” Obama said. “It’s not their sophistication or the particular weaponry they possess, but it is the ideology they carry with them and their willingness to die.” His remarks can be seen below:
Responding to criticism in his own country, the Obama said Republicans seeking his office when he leaves his second term in January 2017 generally didn’t have differing strategy ideas than his. He said that they present it in a way that implies some false level of strength, which he would not do.
“What I do not do is to take actions either because it is going to work politically or it’s going to somehow in the abstract make America look tough or make me look tough,” he said.
Obama continued to denounce the assertion by some that the conflict in the Middle East is a war with the religion of Islam. He repeated the message he has made before, saying that ISIS does not represent the whole of Muslims across the globe. He invoked statements made by former President George W. Bush, a Republican, soon after the 9/11 attacks that the U.S. was “not at war with Islam or Muslims.”
“Whether you are European or American, you know, the values that we are defending, the values we’re fighting against [ISIS] for are precisely that we don’t discriminate against people because of their faith,” Obama said. “It is good to remember that the United States does not have a religious test and we are a nation of many peoples of different faiths. Those are the universal values we stand for. That’s what my administration intends to stand for.”
The G-20 summit is a congregation of the leaders of the world's 20 major economies that tends to focus on economic issues, but over the past two days, leaders have focused pledging to ramp up the fight the Islamic State group, even as they offered few precise details on a plan for doing so. They also discussed the influx of refugees into Europe as a result of fighting in Syria and other countries.
The summit's focus on refugees and the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS or ISIL, came after the militant group claimed responsibility for a series of attacks in Paris Friday night that left 129 dead and more than 350 injured. It also took responsibility for twin suicide bombings in Beirut Thursday that killed at least 43 people.
