"Jubilate Deo in C" by Benjamin Britten [1913-1976]
In 1934 Britten composed his first canticle setting, Te Deum in C, and followed that quickly with a companion piece, Jubilate Deo in E flat major. It was not published until after the composer’s death. In 1961, however, he composed a new companion piece: the Jubilate Deo in C. In the words of Paul Spicer [Conductor of the Leicester Bach Choir from 1986-1992, a choir which was founded by Gordon Slater at Leicester Cathedral]: “With its lively and spirited organ accompaniment and its simple and direct vocal phrases it positively bubbles with the joyful mood of the words” (Britten Choral Guide). The Jubilate Deo, written for St George’s, Windsor, at the request of the Duke of Edinburgh but first performed in Leeds Parish Church, is full of interesting tonalities, bright organ flourishes, and contrasts of tempi and texture that combine to create a festive atmosphere.
Performed by the choirs of the Leicester Cathedral Legacy Concert in October 2013 conducted by Dr. Chris Johns with Simon Headley at the Harrison & Harrison organ
Recorded and edited by Alan Hames [http://www.alanhames.co.uk]

Britten--Rossini--Matinées Musicales - (Live) Boston Pops, Fiedler
Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) composed this five movement suite based on Rossini themes in 1941, to pair with his "Soirées Musicales" (also based on Rossini) as a ballet for the American Ballet Theater. He took themes from the ballet music of "William Tell" for his March and Waltz, and drew upon "Pechés de vieillesse" ("Sins of old age") for the others. (Album notes)

Pärt - Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten
Opname: 18 september 2015 in TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht voor AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert.
Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten is a short canon in A minor, written in 1977 by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, for string orchestra and bell. The work is an early example of Pärt's tintinnabuli style, which he based on his reactions to earlychant music. Its appeal is often ascribed to its relative simplicity; a single melodic motif dominates and it both begins and ends with scored silence. However, as the critic Ivan Hewett observes, while it "may be simple in concept...the concept produces a tangle of lines which is hard for the ear to unravel. And even where the music really is simple in its audible features, the expressive import of those features is anything but."
The cantus was composed as an elegy to mourn the December 1976 death of the English composer Benjamin Britten. Pärt greatly admired Britten. Pärt described Britten as possessing the "unusual purity" that he himself sought as a composer. Pärt viewed the Englishman as a kindred spirit; however, he gained access to the latter's music only in 1980, after emigrating from Soviet Estonia to Austria, four years after Britten had died. When Britten died, Pärt felt that he had lost hope of meeting the only contemporary composer whose musical outlook, he believed, resembled his own.
Although Pärt is known primarily for his religious music, Cantus is a fully secular work, in that it forms a spare lament to a fellow composer not based on biblical texts. It is perhaps Pärt's most popular piece, and a 1997 recording by the Hungarian State Opera Orchestraconducted by Tamas Benedek has been widely distributed. Due to its evocative and cinematic feel, the piece has been used extensively as background accompaniment in both film and television documentaries.

'As it is Plenty' from the song cycle 'On this Island' is sung by the Mezzo Soprano Marianne Lihannah & Pete Rosser is the pianist.
This is a video clip from a much longer concert in 'The Priory Church of the Annunciation' in Inchbrook, Stroud - March 2014.
It was then a relatively new thing for a classical composer to experiment with jazz and blues influences as heard in this cabaret song, composed by a young Britten.
The words are by Britten's poet friend; the famous W. H. Auden.
Both Britten and Auden had learnt satire as one of the main weapon to cope with their authoritarian boarding school years.
Auden's words condemn false values with typical razor-sharp wit and heavy irony.
Musically this irony is heard in the jerky rhythms which end in surprising rests.
The words by Auden are:
As it is plenty;
As it is admitted.
The children happy and the car, the car
That goes so far
And the wife devoted:
To this as it is,
To the work and the banks
Let his thinning hair
And his hauteur
Give thanks, give thanks.
All that was thought
As like as not, is not;......
When nothing was enough
But love, but love
And the rough future
Of an intransigent nature
And the betraying smile,
Betraying, but a smile:
That that is not, is not;
Forget, Forget, Forget.
Let him not cease to praise
Then his spacious days;
Yes, and the success
let him bless, let him bless:
let him see in this
The profits larger
And the sins venal,
lest he see as it is
the loss as major
And final, final, final, final, final, final.
I hope you like it!
All the best

CABARET SONGS
Benjamin Britten
1) “Tell me the truth about love”
2) “Funeral Blues”
3) “Johnny”
4) “Calypso”
During the 1930s composer Benjamin Britten and poet W. H. Auden had a rather contentious relationship. Auden’s leftist political leanings and, shall we say, “interesting” lifestyle were difficult for the shy composer to abide. However, as an artistic team, the two were able to produce compelling works, including their set of Cabaret Songs. These four songs were written over a two-year period for the singer Hedli Anderson, who would later become the wife of the poet Louis MacNeice. Composer, poet, and singer had all met while they were involved with the experimental theatrical company The Group Theatre. Though Britten was unsympathetic to the politics of the group, he was nonetheless placed in a position to hone his skills by turning out songs and incidental music in rapid succession.
Auden’s texts are a product of the times he enjoyed in the cabaret nightlife of Berlin in the early 1930s. “Calypso” tells the story of a man rushing to Grand Central Station to meet his new lover to an accompaniment articulating quasi-rhythms of an onrushing train. “Johnny,” on the other hand is a set of variations in which each stanza of the poem is set to a different style of music, from imitation folk-song to polka to slow waltz. “Tell me the truth about love” is reminiscent of Cole Porter in the sophistication of both text and music. “Funeral Blues” was originally composed as incidental music to the play The Ascent of F6, which was written by Auden in collaboration with Christopher Isherwood.

Benjamin Britten - Death in Venice
A film of an Benjamin Britten's operatic adaptation of Thomas Mann's haunting novella, Death in Venice.
When he wrote the opera, Britten was already ill, and completing the work at all had clearly been a struggle. But he was determined to write an opera and a leading part specifically for his long-time lover and inspiration, Peter Pears.
It was soon after Britten had died in December 1976 that

Details of images (interspersed with my own photographs of various places in the Derbyshire Peak District National Park, England):
1. "The Shrine of St. Ursula" - a carved and gilded wooden reliquary containing oil on panel inserts (87x33x91 cm) by Hans Memling (c. 1433 - 1494). Dating to c.1489
2. (at 7:20) "Angel Musicians" - oil on panel by Hans Memling (c.1433 - 1494). Dating to c.1480s
3. (at 9:40) Choir stall carvings by Advent Huntstone at the Church of St. John the Baptist, Tideswell, Derbyshire, England.
4. (at 12:11) Images (not by me) from the enthronement in March 2013 at Canterbury Cathedral of Justin Welby, as the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury.
5. (at 14:27) at St. Peter's Basilica, Rome
6. (at 19:47) "Adam and Eve" (1511) fresco ceiling panel in the Vatican State Apartments - attributed to Raphael (or Raffaello Sanzio) (1483 - 1520)
7. (at 20:59) as 1. above.
Movements:
1. "Procession" ("Hodie Christus natus est", Gregorian antiphon to the Magnificat at Second Vespers of Christmas)
2. "Wolcum Yole!"
3. "There is no Rose" (Trinity College MS 0.3.58, early 15c)
4a. "That yonge child"
4b. "Balulalow" (The brothers Wedderburn, fl. 1548)
5. "As dew in Aprille" (Sloane 2593, first quarter 15c)

9. "Spring Carol" (16c., also set by William Cornysh)
10. "Deo Gracias" (Sloane 2593)

It was soon after Britten had died in December 1976 that Pears had first asked Tony Palmer to film the entire opera with all the original cast, if possible on location in Venice. After all, apart from Suffolk, Venice was the place which meant most to Britten. Despite a minuscule budget, Palmer eventually in 1980 managed to fulfil Pears' ambition. This is the filmed record of Britten's opera, with Robert Gard playing the ageing writer, Gustav von Aschenbach, who is fascinated by an aristocratic boy he encounters in Venice. Includes a short extract with Peter Pears.

XI. "Frühlingstraum" (Dream of Springtime)
He dreams he is wandering through meadows full of flowers and bird-song in May: he heard the cock's crow and opened his eyes, but it was a raven calling in the cheerless darkness. Who could draw the flowers of ice he can see on the windows? He dreams again, of love, and a maiden's kiss, and the joy and bliss of love, but again the crowing wakes him and he sits up alone. He tries to sleep again: when will the leaves at the window be green - when will she hold him in her arms again?
XVII. "Im Dorfe" (In the Village)
People are asleep in the village and the dogs are barking. They dream of many things and have their rest. Let the dogs drive him away so that he does not rest with them - he is finished with all dreaming.
XXIV. "Der Leiermann" (The Hurdy-Gurdy Man)
At the end of the village he finds the old barefoot hurdy-gurdy man, winding away his tunes, but no one has given him a penny, or listens, and even the dogs growl at him. But he just carries on playing, and the poet thinks he will cast in his lot with him.
wn.com/Peter Pears Benjamin Britten Discuss Die Winterreise 1968
Video footage of this great couple who brought so much understanding to everything they approached. Amazing ensemble... amazing love! This brief sampling from Schubert's great cycle "Winterreise", D. 911, includes "Frühlingstraum", "Im Dorfe", and "Der Leiermann". From 1968.
