A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet, is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol, an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband begins to question her competence as a mother as her involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby come to light. Todd Haynes spoke with NYFF director Kent Jones about his career and his newest film, an NYFF53 selection, 'Carol.' Todd Haynes’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s early novel stars Cate Blanchett as the titular Carol, a wealthy suburban wife and mother, and Rooney Mara as an aspiring photographer. They meet by chance, fall in love almost at first sight, and defy the closet of the early 1950s to be together. Working with his longtime cinematographer Ed Lachman and shooting on the Super-16 film he favors for its echoes of the movie history of 20th-century America, Haynes charts subtle shifts of power and desire in images that are alternately luminous and oppressive. Blanchett and Mara are both splendid; the erotic connection between their characters is palpable from beginning to end, as much in its repression as in eagerly claimed moments of expressive freedom. Originally published under a pseudonym, Carol is Highsmith’s most affirmative work. Haynes has more than done justice to the multilayered emotions evoked by the original. A Weinstein Company release. Todd Haynes (born January 2, 1961) is an American independent film director and screenwriter. He is best known for his feature films Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, Poison, Velvet Goldmine, Safe, and the Academy Award-nominated Far from Heaven and I'm Not There.

The All Movie Guide writes that "Haynes is known for making provocative films that subvert narrative structure and resound with transgressive, complex eroticism…. Although he doesn't characterize himself as a gay filmmaker who makes gay films… Haynes' name has become synonymous with the New Queer Cinema movement and its work to both explore and redefine the contours of queer culture in America and beyond."

Haynes’ work is preoccupied with postmodernist ideas of identity and sexuality as socially constructed concepts, and personal identity as a fluid and changeable state. His protagonists are invariably social outsiders whose "subversive" identity and sexuality pits them at odds with the received norms of their society. In the Haynes universe, sexuality (especially “deviant” or unconventional sexuality) is a subversive and dangerous force that disrupts social norms and is often repressed brutally by dominant power structures. Haynes presents artists as the ultimate subversive force, since they must necessarily stand outside of societal norms, with an artist's creative output representing the greatest opportunity for personal and social freedom. Unsurprisingly, many of his films are unconventional portraits of pop artists and musicians (Karen Carpenter in Superstar, David Bowie in Velvet Goldmine and Bob Dylan in I’m Not There).

Seizing upon the inspired gimmick of using Barbie and Ken dolls to sympathetically recount the story of the pop star's death from anorexia, he spent months making miniature dishes, chairs, costumes, Kleenex and Ex-Lax boxes, and Carpenters' records to create the film's intricate, doll-size mise-en-scene. The result was both audacious and accomplished as the dolls seemingly ceased to be dolls leaving the audience weeping for the tragic singer. Unfortunately, Richard Carpenter's enmity for the film (which made him look like a selfish jerk) led to the serving of a "cease and desist" order in 1989, and despite the director's offer "to only show the film in clinics and schools, with all money going to the Karen Carpenter memorial fund for anorexia research," "Superstar" remains buried, one of the few films in modern America that cannot be seen by the general public.

Todd Haynes’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s early novel stars Cate Blanchett as the titular Carol, a wealthy suburban wife and mother, and Rooney Mara as an aspiring photographer. They meet by chance, fall in love almost at first sight, and defy the closet of the early 1950s to be together. Working with his longtime cinematographer Ed Lachman and shooting on the Super-16 film he favors for its echoes of the movie history of 20th-century America, Haynes charts subtle shifts of power and desire in images that are alternately luminous and oppressive. Announcing their picks Wednesday on Twitter, the New York critics voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Patricia Highsmith adaption starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. They also awarded best director for Haynes, best screenplay for Phyllis Nagy and best cinematography for Edward Lachman. Best Director: Todd Haynes (“Carol”) Not really a surprise as it’s clear the film is strong with the group (and critics in general). Haynes won this back in 2002 for “Far From Heaven,” which also won best film. Best actor went to Michael Keaton, who plays one of the journalists that make up the ensemble cast of the Boston Globe drama “Spotlight.” Saoirse Ronan earned best actress for her performance as an Irish immigrant in “Brooklyn.” Kristen Stewart landed best supporting actress for her performance as an actor’s assistant in Olivier Assayas’ “Clouds of Sils Maria.” (Stewart won a Cesar Award for the role earlier this year, the first American actress to win at the French awards.) Best supporting actor went to Mark Rylance, who plays Soviet spy Rudolf Abel in Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama “Bridge of Spies.” This year’s Oscar race is seen by many as wide open, and the early results from various groups have done nothing to dispel that. On Monday, “Spotlight” topped the Gotham Independent Awards. On Tuesday, the National Board of Review elected “Mad Max- Fury Road” its best film of the year. Things continue to heat up over the next week with the Los Angeles Critics Association announcing its awards on Sunday. Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nominations are also coming next week. The NYFCC, one of the country’s most influential critics groups, will surely add momentum to the Academy Awards fortunes of “Carol,” which has thus far only played in extremely limited release. “Timbuktu,” a Mali drama about a village under jihadist control nominated earlier this year for the Oscars, won best foreign language film. Frederick Wiseman’s Queens documentary, “In Jackson Heights,” took best documentary. And Pixar’s “Inside Out” earned best animated film. The group also announced several special awards, including one for composer Ennio Morricone, who scored Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “The Hateful Eight,” and another honoring the legacy of William Becker and Janus Films. Becker, who made Janus one of the premiere art-house distributors, died in September. The story that would become Carol was originally published in 1952 as The Price of Salt, a novel written by Patrcia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley) but published under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. Todd Haynes’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s early novel stars Cate Blanchett as the titular Carol, a wealthy suburban wife and mother, and Rooney Mara as an aspiring photographer. They meet by chance, fall in love almost at first sight, and defy the closet of the early 1950s to be together. Working with his longtime cinematographer Ed Lachman and shooting on the Super-16 film he favors for its echoes of the movie history of 20th-century America, Haynes charts subtle shifts of power and desire in images that are alternately luminous and oppressive. Blanchett and Mara are both splendid; the erotic connection between their characters is palpable from beginning to end, as much in its repression as in eagerly claimed moments of expressive freedom. Originally published under a pseudonym, Carol is Highsmith’s most affirmative work. Haynes has more than done justice to the multilayered emotions evoked by the original. A Weinstein Company release. The experimental filmmaker Todd Haynes burst upon the scene two years after his graduation from Brown University with his now-infamous 43-minute cult treasure "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story" (1987). Seizing upon the inspired gimmick of using Barbie and Ken dolls to sympathetically recount the story of the pop star's death from anorexia, he spent months making miniature dishes, chairs, costumes, Kleenex and Ex-Lax boxes, and Carpenters' records to create the film's intricate, doll-size mise-en-scene. The result was both audacious and accomplished as the dolls seemingly ceased to be dolls leaving the audience weeping for the tragic singer. Unfortunately, Richard Carpenter's enmity for the film (which made him look like a selfish jerk) led to the serving of a "cease and desist" order in 1989, and despite the director's offer "to only show the film in clinics and schools, with all money going to the Karen Carpenter memorial fund for anorexia research," "Superstar" remains buried, one of the few films in modern America that cannot be seen by the general public.

Todd Haynes’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s early novel stars Cate Blanchett as the titular Carol, a wealthy suburban wife and mother, and Rooney Mara as an aspiring photographer. They meet by chance, fall in love almost at first sight, and defy the closet of the early 1950s to be together. Working with his longtime cinematographer Ed Lachman and shooting on the Super-16 film he favors for its echoes of the movie history of 20th-century America, Haynes charts subtle shifts of power and desire in images that are alternately luminous and oppressive. Blanchett and Mara are both splendid; the erotic connection between their characters is palpable from beginning to end, as much in its repression as in eagerly claimed moments of expressive freedom. Todd Haynes’ 1950s lesbian romance “Carol” dominated the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, taking best film and a leading four awards overall. Announcing their picks Wednesday on Twitter, the New York critics voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Patricia Highsmith adaption starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. They also awarded best director for Haynes, best screenplay for Phyllis Nagy and best cinematography for Edward Lachman. Best Director: Todd Haynes (“Carol”) Not really a surprise as it’s clear the film is strong with the group (and critics in general). Haynes won this back in 2002 for “Far From Heaven,” which also won best film. Best actor went to Michael Keaton, who plays one of the journalists that make up the ensemble cast of the Boston Globe drama “Spotlight.” Saoirse Ronan earned best actress for her performance as an Irish immigrant in “Brooklyn.” Kristen Stewart landed best supporting actress for her performance as an actor’s assistant in Olivier Assayas’ “Clouds of Sils Maria.” (Stewart won a Cesar Award for the role earlier this year, the first American actress to win at the French awards.) Best supporting actor went to Mark Rylance, who plays Soviet spy Rudolf Abel in Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama “Bridge of Spies.” This year’s Oscar race is seen by many as wide open, and the early results from various groups have done nothing to dispel that. On Monday, “Spotlight” topped the Gotham Independent Awards. On Tuesday, the National Board of Review elected “Mad Max- Fury Road” its best film of the year. Things continue to heat up over the next week with the Los Angeles Critics Association announcing its awards on Sunday. Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nominations are also coming next week. The NYFCC, one of the country’s most influential critics groups, will surely add momentum to the Academy Awards fortunes of “Carol,” which has thus far only played in extremely limited release. “Timbuktu,” a Mali drama about a village under jihadist control nominated earlier this year for the Oscars, won best foreign language film. Frederick Wiseman’s Queens documentary, “In Jackson Heights,” took best documentary. And Pixar’s “Inside Out” earned best animated film. The group also announced several special awards, including one for composer Ennio Morricone, who scored Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “The Hateful Eight,” and another honoring the legacy of William Becker and Janus Films. Becker, who made Janus one of the premiere art-house distributors, died in September. The story that would become Carol was originally published in 1952 as The Price of Salt, a novel written by Patrcia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley) but published under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. Screenwriter Phyllis Nagy started working on the adaptation nearly 20 years ago, and when the project came to Haynes, he knew he wanted to bring back some of the edge that was there in Highsmith’s book.
