North and South Korea are, both legally and philosophically, in a state of war. While the guns may be silent, the conflict between the two countries has now become one of propaganda.
With the assistance of the Human Rights Foundation, North Korean defectors now in South Korea have been launching hydrogen-filled balloons across the 38th parallel — carrying both money and propaganda. In late 2014, a balloon launch sparked a brief exchange of gunfire between North and South Korean soldiers, and even more recently, Pyongyang has promised that hellfire will rain on South Korea if any copies of the controversial Hollywood comedy The Interview make it across the border.
VICE News traveled to Seoul to meet frontline soldiers in this information war — and to attend a clandestine launch of propaganda balloons into the Hermit Kingdom.

Who could have foreseen that an American orchestra would be performing in North Korea? Who would have believed that music is
capable of bringing people together who are supposed to be bitter enemies? Can music play a role in the political game?
The film Americans in Pyongyang accompanies members of the New York Philharmonic on its historic trip to North Korea´s capital, Pyongyang. This trip was by no means a simple one. Many concerns and doubts arose just before departing for the most inaccessible country in the world – a country that consistently violates human rights and that has been categorized by George W. Bush as a key member in the “axis of evil“. The documentary by Ayelet Heller is not a political manifesto but a story about people who are brought a little closer to each other by virtue of music. Americans in Pyongyang shows, almost non-verbally, that music
knows no borders and that it can reach and melt hearts and unite people. The 48-hour trip was memorable to all involved: Korean and American musicians meet on stage for the first time, performing together with technical brilliance, hardly speaking,
just exchanging quick glances and communicating with body language. One of the musicians said: “Something profound has happened between two peoples. It was astounding.“

Though there is little evidence of safety issues concerning tourists on organized expeditions, those planning to engage in activities that the North Korean government forbids must be prepared to face severe consequences.
Under no circumstances are you to say anything that could be perceived as an insult to or critical of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-Il, Kim Jong-Un, the Juche ideology, the Songun policy, the ruling Worker's Party of Korea, the North Korean government in general, or the citizens of North Korea. Simply avoid these topics if you can.

North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society... as imagined back in the 70′s.
"Land of Whispers" invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world - not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture.

I was not undercover, I was truthful about everything I did every step of the way. YT: I have all proper documentation. I'm doing all my best to keep the film up. If they succeed in shutting it down, i will do my best to re-upload along with a list of alternative web sites where you can see it. ***

The film is non-commercial, was made with private money and is available for viewing for free. Due to abusive YouTube policies, I also make absolutely no profit from the ads displayed on the film by Google against my will. All funds raised will be used for festival/contest fees as well as for upcoming projects, such as my new feature doc about the Khau Vai Love Market in remote, mountainous Vietnam. Any amount helps. Australian filmmaker Mark Shea (http://www.overlander.tv) takes a trip to North Korea (The People's Democratic Republic of Korea) with Young Pioneer Tours. http://dprk.youngpioneertours.com
Listening to the news, watching hatchet job videos on youtube, anyone would believe North Korea was a dangerous place to visit. I myself as a travel video producer was a little concerned before entering, afraid my camera equipment would be confiscated at the border. Instead what I found was a country just starting to open to tourism. I was treated like royalty and allowed to pretty much film anything I wanted, other than groups of soldiers.
At the moment, to visit the DPRK one must go with a tour company. I myself went with Young Pioneer Tours who run small group tours for westerners at a budget price. The other options are going with a Chinese tour which are larger and, from what I saw, tend to rush groups through locations quicker. Young Pioneer Tours work in North Korea with two local guides. They have been running tours to North Korea since 2008, so they know how the DPRK works better than anyone. The tours are highly organised and, as tourism is a relatively new endeavour, tend to focus on viewing sites more than interacting with locals. For someone who makes travel videos focusing on meeting the locals, this was a new experience for me, but I still found there were plenty of chances to chat with our guides and various other guides throughout the tour.
The first thing that hits you when you travel by train into North Korea is how lush and green it is, every available space is used to grow food such as corn and rice. It looks like an agrarian wonderland, hills of rolling green dotted with small villages. On closer inspection, one notices the lack of machinery, the ox and cart, everything from cutting grass to ploughing fields, done by hand. The contrast with the enormity of China is startling.
Arriving in the capital Pyongyang, the next thing to hit you, is the lack of cars, no roadblocks, no bottlenecks, just wide open boulevards. The footpaths on the other hand are full of people, walking, riding bikes, always on the move. The public transport system includes electric buses and a two line subway system.
Our tour took in three main locations; sites around the capital -- Pyongyang, Kaesong -- the capital of Korea during the Koryo Dynasty and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)
I'm not going to go into every detail of the tour, but there were many highlights. In each location we were given ample opportunity to take any photos we pleased (apart from photographing groups of military)
Highlights for me in Pyongyang included the amazing murals and statues. I particularly liked the quirky 'music room' full of boomboxes in the Grand People's Study House.
Kaesong, the ancient capital of Korea, is like a tourism boom town waiting to happen. It did not escape me that we were the only group walking the quaint cobbled streets surrounded by traditional houses. Visiting the museum and learning of the history of the Koryo period, I thought to recent history, political movements, and how only sixty years have made the two Korea's, North and South, so distinguishable.
The demilitarised zone really took me by surprise. I was expecting stern faced soldiers ready for attack. Instead I discovered bus loads of Chinese tourists, snapping photos with obliging soldiers.
I'd read a fair bit about North Korea before I traveled there, I'm well aware of it's problems. But I also believe tourism can have positive effects on a country. What we are seeing in North Korea is a change, a change I believe will be for the better.
There is a lot you won't be able to talk about with your North Korean Guides on current tours and there is a lot of the country you won't see. BUT if you want to see a country like nothing else on earth, at a fascinating stage in history, North Korea is well and truly open for tourism!
Be quick, the winds of change blow strong in the year of a Rising Dragon.

Travel video about destination Seoul in South Korea.
Founded in 1394, Seoul is both the cultural and economic centre of South Korea and with 12 million inhabitants, it is also the 5th largest city in the world.
A huge monument commemorates the Korean War during which, between 1950 and 1953, around 400,000 people were killed. At that time, the United States of America and 20 other countries took part in a United Nations military operation to support South Korea against the forces of North Korea and China.
In 1988, the 24th Olympic Games took place in Seoul and for this, the Olympic Park was created, a huge area with a monument at its entrance and 200 sculptures that adorn various paths, designed to highlight Korea's global connection with the rest of the world.
At the end of the 18th century, the Hwaseong Fortress was built, now a World Heritage Sight. The fortress extends for 130 hectares and the distance from one main gate to the other is such that a dragon train is available for those who prefer not to walk.
In 1969, the N Seoul Tower was built to provide South Korea with TV and radio signals. Seoul's main landmark is 236 metres high and is equipped with several high speed elevators, as well as an observation platform and observatory.
Historic buildings, palaces, shrines and bridges all serve to underline the ultra modern appearance of Seoul, a mega city in the Land of the Silent Morning.

South Korea, located on the peninsula between Japan and China, is a nation of contradictions. You’ll find an ancient culture that goes back thousands of years, bolstered by high-tech industries and glowing modern cities. These elements, seemingly at odds, often mix together to create a truly unique experience.
Your Korea tour begins with Seoul, a mega-city full of theatres, casinos, restaurants, and pubs. If you love shopping, you’re in luck: Korea loves nothing better than offering a chance for some good purchases. Entire districts are devoted to stores, vendors, and malls, so make sure your credit card is ready to go.
If you’re engaging in some sightseeing in Korea, you can’t go wrong with a dedicated visit to the many temples and palaces that dot the country. Many of these sacred locations are adorned with ponds, moats, and trees, allowing you to get back in touch with nature while you explore this nation’s vast history.
Stop by the museums and galleries of your choice to get a taste of the local modern culture. You’ll find fine art, eccentric modern pieces, and everything in between—and best of all, you can stop for delicious Korean food on just about any corner.

Train travel from China to Cult Korea: Beijing-Pyongyang. May 2010. See Videos 2, 3 and 4 for the walking tour of NK. This was a propaganda tour that brings tourists to the country's showcase cities and fertile regions. These videos give people thinking about visiting NK an overview of what they will see there (A variety of tours are offered but itineraries are often similar). These videos are neither truncated nor narrated. Footage is exclusive to regions in N. Korea where the elite population resides. Therefore you will not see how the majority of N. Koreans live, with oppression, famine, lack of human rights and medical care, or the most unfortunate 150,000 political victims living in Soviet Gulag/Nazi Concentration style camps.
South Korea maintains a cowardly and disturbing indifference to the large scale atrocities occurring in North Korea. In the 60 years since the division of the Korean Peninsula, South Korweakens have lost their sense of unity and urgency.
S. Korea has overwhelming military and non-military options if it wanted the Northern regime to collapse. It does not need to wait forever on the the vastly useless and toothless UN to solve South Korea's problem. Yet, the SK government and inhabitants are shockingly content with maintaining their segregation due to the massive financial costs of rebuilding the North's infrastructure and rehabilitating a mentally/physically stunted and uneducated population. Even though the reunification costs increases each year, the Holocaust stays alive because information connected South Korea ignores the suffering when they are morally responsible and fully capable of taking back their own country.
The S. Korean government downplays the N. Korean human rights abuses and over-hypes North Korea's military capacity to discourage citizens from talking about the necessity of freeing Korea. South Korea has 50 times greater GDP and generations more advance military, yet cowers to a starving, impoverished country with antique armaments.
N. Korean refugees are not warmly received in S. Korean society. South Korea does not voice opposition to China's illegal forced repatriation of N. Korean refugees, of which there may be over 100,000. When men, women and children are repatriated back to North Korea, they face cruel punishment and imprisonment, or if they had communicated with Westerners or religious groups, they are tortured and/or executed. Yet, this does not concern or alarm the prosperous South Koreans. North Korean lives are dispensable to them.
And this is all great news for tourists wanting to see a Stalinist/Maoist country in the 21st century. So no need to rush, you still have plenty of time to visit. The UN is powerless, and South Korea is spineless. If you want to help North Korean civilians, I recommend visiting HRNK (The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea) and the UK Manna Mission of Europe (which operates bakeries to feed NK children).

Inside North korea by an Americcan tourist, more Info :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourism_in_North_Korea
Tourism in North Korea is organized by one of several state-owned tourism bureaus, including Korea International Travel Company (KITC), Korean International Sports Travel Company (KISTC) and Korean International Youth Travel Company (KIYTC). Tourism in North Korea is highly controlled by the government, which is one of the reasons it is not a frequently visited destination—about 1,500 Western tourists visit North Korea each year, along with thousands of Asians.[1]
Tourists must go on guided tours. As of June 2011, the northern border to China has been opened and Chinese citizens are free to drive their own vehicles to Luo, a small North Korean northeast border region where they are free to explore, mingle and photograph. This is seen as a first step towards expanded tourism and development in that region. Photography and interaction with local people has historically been tightly controlled,[1] however, from photos seen around the internet and evidence from travelers to the DPRK, those restrictions seem to have been relaxed slightly in the past few years.[2] As of January 2013, foreigners are allowed to buy SIM cards at Pyongyang airport,[3] providing access to international calling.[4]
For westerners, there are a handful of private tour operators that help provide access to the country. Well known amongst these operators are Uri Tours (recently in the news for their role in the Dennis Rodman and Eric Schmidt trips to the DPRK),[5] Koryo Tours (known for its DPRK-related films and strong history in the region) and Young Pioneer Tours (traditionally aimed at the budget traveler).[6] Companies like these are full-service shops that will take care of visas, flights, etc. for a single fee.[7][8][9] Since December 2013, North Korea has been open to tourists during the winter.
The Masikryong Ski Resort outside Wonsan City in Kangwon Province opened in early 2014.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un never completed plans to travel to Moscow for an event to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. Despite the cancellation, there was still important symbolic meaning behind the young leader’s choice of Russia for his first overseas trip as head of state. Anne HuFTV News ChiefFrom Tumengang neighborhood you can see the Korea-Russia Bridge, which passes over the border. In the past, Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il’s father, crossed this bridge by train.North Korea founder Kim Il-sung’s fear of flying led him to choose rail transit when visiting the Soviet Union. These journeys from Pyongyang to Moscow contributed to the close historical connection between the countries and paved the way for desperately needed assistance. When North Korea was still a colony of Japan during World War II, Kim Il-sung relied on the Soviet Union for support in his fight of resistance. The Soviet Union provided assistance again in 1945, when the Workers’ Party of North Korea was founded, and on Sept. 9, 1948, when Kim Il-sung founded the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. In the 1950s and 60s, support from the Soviet Union led North Korea to have a rate of industrial development that was second only to Japan in Asia. When the Soviet Union dissolved, this generosity abruptly ended. Desperate for support in the face of international sanctions, as North Korea began to drift away from the Soviet Union, it turned to China. While Russia is still North Korea’s third largest exporter, proportionally it is far behind China, which places first in terms of both exports and imports. While the trip was later cancelled, it still carried important symbolic meaning. Recently, Russia has proposed building a railway that cut across North Korea from north to south and links to the Trans-Siberian Railway. This would provide easy transport of coal, iron, petroleum and natural gas. Early interest from North Korea points toward more opportunity for cooperation in the future. This is FTV’s Anne Hu, Su C. Kim Jong Un says North Korea is ready for war if provoked
On New year's day, yesterday, many North Koreans braved the cold and snowy January weather to make their way to Mansu Hill in central Pyongyang to lay flowers at the feet of the giant statues of Kim Jong II and his father Kim II Sung, the founder of this ultra-authoritarian state.
Later, Kim Jong Un, the grandson of the founding father and leader of the communist country, appeared on giant TV screens to deliver his annual New Year speech, which is the highpoint of New Year’s Day in North Korea.
This was Kim's fourth Jan. 1 speech since becoming leader. Standing behind a huge gold-colored podium, he told the country in his normal bellicose style that he was ready for war if provoked but steered away from threats he has made in the past to use North Korea’s arsenal of nuclear weapons.
“If invasive outsiders and provocateurs touch us even slightly, we will not be forgiving in the least and sternly with a merciless holy war of justice," Kim said.
As in previous years, much of Kim’s speech was devoted to criticizing South Korea and its alliance with the U.S.
"South Korea has made a unilateral case for unification and increased mistrust and conflict between us," he said. Kim did note that he was open to talks with anyone truly interested in “reconciliation and peace” in the Korean Peninsula and was ready to “aggressively” work to improve ties with the South, a more conciliatory tone from his prior speeches.
After a tense military stand-off in the summer, when two South Korean soldiers were injured by land mines, high level talks were resumed in December but broke off with no concrete proposals.
Kim, speaking for 30 minutes, promised to improve North Korea’s struggling economy and improve the country’s desperate living standards. Pyongyang resident Choe Myong Jin reflected on the speech.
“This New Year’s Day is significant for me and I will do my best to carry out the tasks mentioned in the New Year’s address," he said.
North Koreans, however, have little choice but to praise and follow their dictator leader.

Inside North Korea -kim jong un- Documentary 2016 HD
Welcome to North Korea is a grotesquely surreal look at the all-too-real conditions in modern-day North Korea.
North Korea (About this sound listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast.[8] The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed.[9] Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.[10]
The DPRK officially describes itself as a self-reliant socialist state and holds elections.[11] Internationally, however, it is considered a totalitarian dictatorship. Various outlets have called it Stalinist,[20][21][22] particularly noting the elaborate cult of personality around Kim Il-sung and his family. International organizations have also assessed human rights violations in North Korea as belonging to a category of their own, with no parallel in the contemporary world.[23][24][25] The Workers' Party of Korea, led by a member of the ruling family,[22] holds power in the state and leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland of which all political officers are required to be members.[26]
Over time North Korea has gradually distanced itself from the world communist movement. Juche, an ideology of national self-reliance, was introduced into the constitution as a "creative application of Marxism–Leninism" in 1972.[27][28] The means of production are owned by the state through state-run enterprises and collectivized farms. Most services such as healthcare, education, housing and food production are subsidized or state-funded.[29] In the late 1990s, North Korea suffered from a famine that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians. North Korea continues to struggle with food production to this day.[30]
North Korea follows Songun, or "military-first" policy.[31] It is the world's most militarized society, with a total of 9,495,000 active, reserve, and paramilitary personnel.[citation needed] Its active duty army of 1.21 million is the fourth largest in the world, after China, the U.S., and India.[32] It also possesses nuclear weapons.
Kim Yang-gon died in a car crash on Tuesday but there are no details as to the circumstances of his death, which remains a mystery even as he was given a state funeral.
A huge fireworks display took place in Pyongyang, North Korea on Friday night to herald in the new year.
It was shown live on television by North Korean state broadcaster KRT.

North Korea’s limited agricultural resources make it difficult to have more agricultural production. But following the reforms ordered by the country’s leader in 2014, a National Farm became a model for all other farming lands in North Korea.
Built in 1954, The Jangchon Vegetable Cooperative Farm on the outskirts of Pyongyang has more than 600 greenhouses, over 400 brand new housing units, and 18 public facilities. They include a science and technology center, a school, and entertainment facilities. The farm’s science and technology unit has laboratories, a library, and a technology study room where farmers can remotely attend courses from Pyongyang University.

North Korea TV: US Army Leaks Defense Details On Facebook To North Korea - Oregon Invaded On Tuesday
Dear Leader, Kim Jong Un, farted in the general direction of Portland, Oregon, and massive storms ensued.
US Army "soldiers" have been leaking the poor Defense of The Nation plans, allowing superior trained North Korean Army operatives to easily plot the pending invasion of Oregon.
To further impede North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missile programs, the Department of State is announcing on December 8 the designation of North Korea’s Strategic Force for its contribution to North Korea’s WMD-related activities. The Strategic Force has been designated pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13382 (“Blocking Property of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferators and Their Supporters).
As North Korean forces are not allowed on Facebook, purely for security reasons, the US was unaware of the plans.
The Strategic Force conducted multiple ballistic missile launches during 2014. Specifically, it conducted the launches of two short-range Scud-class ballistic missiles, test-fired two medium-range No Dong-class ballistic missiles, and conducted the launch of a short-range ballistic missile. All missiles had a range of 500km or greater. The launches of these missiles materially contributed to North Korea’s ballistic missile program.
North Korea's nuclear and missile proliferation activities violate UN Security Council Resolutions 1718 (2006), 1874 (2009), 2087 (2013), and 2094 (2013), destabilize the region, and undermine the global nonproliferation regime.
The United States is committed to taking all appropriate actions to impede North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missile programs. We continue to call on North Korea to renounce its pursuit of nuclear weapons and their means of delivery and to choose the path of peace. The United States remains prepared to engage constructively with North Korea if it changes course. However, North Korea must demonstrate its seriousness of purpose and commitment to authentic and credible negotiations by taking meaningful steps to fulfill its denuclearization commitments and respect international law.
The Department of the Treasury is concurrently designating a number of entities and individuals pursuant to E.O. 13382 and E.O. 13551 (“Blocking Property of Certain Persons With Respect to North Korea”).
Details on the Treasury sanctions are available here:

Pyongyang : "Flat Land" or "Peaceful Land", approved: P’yŏngyang;[7] several variants[8]) is the capital of North Korea and the largest city in the country. Pyongyang is located on the Taedong River and, according to preliminary results from the 2008 population census, has a population of 3,255,388.[9] The city was split from the South Pyongan province in 1946. It is administered as a directly governed city (chikhalsi, 직할시) on the same level as provincial governments, not a special city (teukbyeolsi, 특별시) as Seoul in South Korea.st. Pyongyang is in the west-central part of North Korea; the city lies on a flat plain about 50 kilometres (31 mi) east of the Korea Bay, an arm of the Yellow Sea. The Taedong River flows southwestward through the city toward the Korea Bay. The Pyongyang plain, where the city is situated, is one of the two large plains on the Western coast of the Korean peninsula, the other being the Chaeryong plain. Both have an area of approximately 500 square kilometers.[20]Pyongyang was reduced to rubble during the Korean War and has been entirely rebuilt according to a design reflecting Kim Il-Sung's vision.[28] His dream was to create a capital that would boost the morale and ego of Koreans in the post-war years.[29] The result was a city with wide, tree-lined boulevards and monumental public buildings with terraced landscaping, mosaics and decorated ceilings.[28] Foreign visitors have described Pyongyang as one of the most beautiful cities they have seen; its Russian-style architecture makes it reminiscent of a Siberian city during winter snowfall, although edifices of traditional Korean design somewhat soften this perception. In summer, it is notable for its rivers, willow trees, flowers and parkland.[28]
The streets are laid out in a north-south, east-west grid, giving the city an orderly appearance.[28] North Korean designers applied the Swedish experience of self-sufficient urban neighbourhoods throughout the entire country, and Pyongyang is no exception. Its inhabitants are mostly divided into administrative units of 5,000 to 6,000 people (dong). These units all have similar sets of amenities including a food store, a barber shop, a tailor, a public bathhouse, a post office, a clinic, a library and others. Many residents occupy high-rise apartment buildings.[30] One of Kim Il-Sung's priorities while designing Pyongyang was to limit the population. Authorities maintain a restrictive regime of movement into the city, making it atypical of East Asia as it is silent, uncrowded and spacious.[31]
Structures in Pyongyang are divided into three major architectural categories: monuments, buildings with traditional Korean motifs and high-rises.[32] Some of North Korea's most recognisable landmarks are monuments, like the Juche Tower, the Arch of Triumph and the Mansu Hill Grand Monument. The first of them is a 170-meter granite spire symbolizing the Juche ideology. It was completed in 1982 and contains 25,550 granite blocks, one for each day of Kim Il-Sung's life up to that point.[32] By far the most prominent building on Pyongyang's skyline is Ryugyong Hotel,[32] the 7th highest building in the world terms of floor count and one of the tallest hotels in the world, which has never opened.[33][34]
High-rise apartment buildings dominate the cityscape. The government launched a mass construction campaign aiming to build 100,000 new homes in 2011. The Changjon Street Apartment Complex was part of this effort. Construction of the complex began after late leader Kim Jong-il reportedly described the area as "pitiful".[35] Other housing complexes are being upgraded as well, but most are still poorly insulated while elevators and central heating in them remain rare.[36]

Their investigation, the deepest yet into the country’s Red Star OS, illustrates the challenges Pyongyang faces in trying to embrace the benefits of computing and the internet while keeping a tight grip on ideas and culture.
The operating system is not just the pale copy of western ones that many have assumed, said Florian Grunow and Niklaus Schiess of the German IT security company ERNW, who downloaded the software from a website outside North Korea and explored the code in detail.
“[The late leader] Kim Jong-il said North Korea should develop a system of their own. This is what they’ve done,” Gunrow told the Chaos Communication congress in Hamburg on Sunday.
North Korea, whose rudimentary intranet system does not connect to the world wide web, but allows access to state media and some officially approved sites, has been developing its own operating system for more than a decade.

This latest version, written around 2013, is based on a version of Linux called Fedora and has eschewed the previous version’s Windows XP feel for Apple’s OSX – perhaps a nod to the country’s leader Kim Jong-un who, like his father, has been photographed near Macs.
But under the bonnet there’s a lot that is unique, including its own version of encrypting files. “This is a full blown operation system where they control most of the code,” Grunow said.
The researchers say this suggests North Korea wants to avoid any code that might be compromised by intelligence agencies.
“Maybe this is a bit fear-driven,” Grunow said. “They may want to be independent of other operating systems because they fear back doors,” which might allow others to spy on them.

Grunow and Schiess said they had no way of knowing how many computers were running the software.
Private computer use is on the rise in North Korea, but visitors to the country say most machines still use Windows XP, now nearly 15 years old.
The Red Star operating system makes it very hard for anyone to tamper with it. If a user makes any changes to core functions, like trying to disable its antivirus checker or firewall, the computer will display an error message or reboot itself.
Red Star also addresses a more pressing concern - cracking down on the growing underground exchange of foreign movies, music and writing.
Illegal media is usually passed person-to-person in North Korea using USB sticks and microSD cards, making it hard for the government to track where they come from.
Red Star tackles this by tagging, or watermarking, every document or media file on a computer or on any USB stick connected to it. That means that all files can be traced.
“It’s definitely privacy invading. It’s not transparent to the user,” Grunow said. “It’s done stealthily and touches files you haven’t even opened.”
Nat Kretchun, an authority on the spread of foreign media in North Korea, said such efforts reflected Pyongyang’s realisation that it needs “new ways to update their surveillance and security procedures to respond to new types of technology and new sources of information”.
There is no sign in the operating system of the kinds of cyber-attack capability North Korea has been accused of, the researchers say.
“It really looks like they’ve just tried to build an operating system for them, and give the user a basic set of applications,” Grunow said. That includes a Korean word processor, a calendar and an app for composing and transcribing music.
North Korea is not the only country to try to develop a bespoke operating system. Cuba has National Nova, and China, Russia and others have also tried to build their own.

From the North Korean Romantic-drama "On the Green Carpet" (푸른 주단우에서) from 2001
Subtitles: English
Directors: Rim Chang-bom and Jon Kwang-il
The film's title refers to the turf of the stadium which hosts the May Day mass games in Pyongyang. On the Green Carpet was the first North Korean film to be invited to the Berlin International Film Festival, where it was screened in 2004 as a special one-off event. It had been chosen by the festival committee from a selection of ten films, and aroused a great deal of interest.
The film is a drama, which involves a coach who is preparing a group of schoolchildren for the May Day mass games and a former colleague who has now become his superior. She feels that he is being too demanding of his young performers, as the show he has devised requires a series of multiple somersaults. However, the children are willing to work as hard as necessary and the film culminates in a lavish display of their abilities.

"북, 플루토늄 6kg 이하로 핵무기 1개 만들 수 있다"
News from North Korea that could be cause for concern,... the reclusive state looks to have advanced its ability to produce nuclear weapons even further.
Government sources say it might take less plutonium for Pyongyang to make a nuclear weapon than normally required.
Connie Kim reports.
Has North Korea improved its ability to produce nuclear weapons?
That seems to be the case as multiple government sources said Friday the nuclear state has reached a level where it could produce one nuclear weapon with less than six kilograms of plutonium.
This is unusual as it normally requires some six kilograms of plutonium to produce one nuclear weapon.
A source speaking on condition of anonymity said the assessment comes as Pyongyang is suspected to have manufactured multiple nuclear weapons.
Seoul′s defense ministry estimates North Korea possesses a total of some 40 kilograms of plutonium.
This means North Korea has developed the capability to produce more than eight nuclear weapons.
Even more concerning is that the reclusive state is expected to possess more plutonium after it restarted its Yongbyon reactor in August.
Military and government officials also speculate Pyongyang has produced its own centrifuge using technology acquired overseas.
Despite international calls for North Korea to denuclearize, the regime continues to forge ahead with its nuclear development.
This year, North Korea has test fired its submarine-launched ballistic missiles twice.
Officials also believe that North Korea′s capacity to miniaturize nuclear warheads has reached a “considerable” level.

The North Korea Space Agency has successfully landed an unmanned rocket upright, after sending 11 satellites into orbit.
The Fukkem-9 craft touched down late on Monday night, about 10km from its launch pad at Cape Pyongyang, Glorious Democratic Peoples Republic Of Korea, North Korea.
It is not the first spacecraft to land a booster vertically; that feat was claimed by the much smaller New Dear Leader rocket in Pyongyang last month.
Nonetheless the Fukkem-9 flight, which also went twice as high as New Dear Leader, is a milestone towards reusing rockets.
North Korea Space Agency aims to slash the cost of private space operations with such reusable components - but the company has not launched a rocket since one failed to explode with volunteer prisoners inside in June.
The North Korea Space Agency has a $39 contract with Nasa to send kimchi to the ISS - international space station.
Dear Leader Kim Jong Un commented "that Elon Musk woman will be jealous as hell".

July 2014 will forever be etched in my memory as a month that gave me a whole new perspective on life. I have been working in at Kyungpook National University in South Korea for four years, but earlier this year, I was given the opportunity to teach at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, in North Korea. It was an unpaid volunteering opportunity but the rewards were much bigger than any pay check I will ever receive.
There is a lot of promise in North Korea and I witnessed it firsthand as I interacted with a group of students at PUST that are beyond a justified description. They are the future of North Korea and PUST provides a window to the outside world for these students. It provides hope and that is the first step to reformation.
When I arrived at PUST, I had no idea what to expect. From the moment I stepped onto the campus grounds until the day I left four weeks later, it was an absolute pleasure to be there.
