In philosophy, physicalism is the ontological thesis that "everything is physical", that there is "nothing over and above" the physical, or that everything supervenes on the physical. Physicalism is a form of ontological monism—a "one substance" view of the nature of reality as opposed to a "two-substance" (dualism) or "many-substance" (pluralism) view. Both the definition of "physical" and the meaning of physicalism have been debated.
Physicalism is closely related to materialism. Physicalism grew out of materialism with the success of the physical sciences in explaining observed phenomena. The terms are often used interchangeably, although they are sometimes distinguished, for example on the basis of physics describing more than just matter (including energy and physical law). Common arguments against physicalism include both the philosophical zombie argument and the multiple observers argument, that the existence of a physical being may imply zero or more distinct conscious entities.

John Dupré and Alex Rosenberg discuss physicalist reductionism & anti-reductionism. According to physicalism (materialism), nothing which exists is non-physical, immaterial, spiritual, or otherwise incorporeal. According to reductionism, all facts can be captured by some purely physical description of the world. So are mental properties reducible to physical properties in this sense? Are psychology and the other social sciences reducible to biology and physics? In this debate, Dupré defends the more orthodox view, while Rosenberg defends the less popular view: physicalist reductionism. They also discuss some of the issues for both views. Reductionism faces, for instance, the problem of multiple realizability (i.e. how the very same mental states could occur in organisms which have very dif...
Death (PHIL 176) Professor Kagan discusses the two main positions with regard to the question, "What is a person?" On the one hand, there is the dualist view, according to which a person is a body and a soul. On the other hand, the physicalist view argues that a person is just a body. The body, however, has a certain set of abilities and is capable of a large range of activities. 00:00 - Chapter 1. "Is There Life After Death?" Asking the Right Question 13:25 - Chapter 2. What is the physical world? What qualifies as physical? Do non-physical entities exist? What is the scope of science? When it comes to phenomena and entities which are not directly measurable, how can we possibly discern what is real from what is not? From virtual particles, wave functions and black holes to hidden dimensions and parallel universes, modern science currently deals with a vast array of theoretical entities which seem to be nothing but our own conceptual abstractions, our own tools for describing those layers of reality which we cannot directly measure. In this video, I explore the question of what is physical in detail and the idea that physicalism may be nothing more than our desperate attempt to re-establish clearly defined boundaries after the fall of classical materiali...

Professor Castleberry gives another lecture on the Mind/Body problem. This time he is highlighting the theory of physicalism. This theory claims that all mental states can be completely understood or reduced to physical states. Therefore any talk of a mind as immaterial is eradicated. This theory is an attack on Dualism.

Philip Goff and David Papineau discuss consciousness and whether it's at bottom something physical or material. Goff rejects physicalism/materialism, Papineau accepts it. In this discussion, they examine the arguments on each side. They consider the causal exclusion argument for physicalism, the much-discussed "knowledge argument" against physicalism, conceptual dualism, explore Goff's own reasons for rejecting physicalism, weigh the dualist arguments of Chalmers and Jackson, discuss Papineau's reasons to reject the transparency of phenomenal concepts, ponder what Levine calls the "explanatory gap", and confront the specter of epiphenomenalism. In the Parapsychology Foundation Book Expo, Dr. Edward F. Kelly, Associate Professor of Research at the Division of Perceptual Studies, University of Virginia, talked about his anthology, "Beyond Physicalism: Toward Reconciliation of Science and Spirituality" edited with Dr. Adam Crabtree and Dr. Paul Marshall. The book is the result of eight years of meetings between physicists, psychologists, philosophers and other individuals to dig into one of the most pressing intellectual debates in science. This is a class from my Introduction to Philosophy course on the dualism of J. P. Moreland and the physicalism of J. J. C. Smart.
David Papineau argues that thought experiments and the intuitions they elicit play a central role in philosophical theorizing. They help us to identify deep-seated principles that direct our thinking. And although such principles aren't always trustworthy, they're methodologically very important. After giving an example from the history of science, he illustrates his points with examples from recent debates in the philosophy of mind regarding the hard problem of consciousness - the supposed explanatory gap between the mental and physical. He argues that the philosophical intuition of an explanatory gap is a dualistic intuition, and materialists (physicalists) who take such a gap seriously are implicitly committed to dualism, not having fully thought through their own materialist view. Thi...
Since the late 19th century, a leading theme in the philosophy of science has been the explanatory superiority of physicalism: the thesis that everything is physical, and that non-physical entities, such as souls and God, do not exist. Physicalism carries obvious negative implications for theism and Christianity, but many Christians try to neutralize the thesis by accepting the view of methodological naturalism, which asserts physicalism in the practice of science, but not in metaphysics or theology. In this talk, Dr. Nelson argues that teleological reasoning (i.e., employing design concepts) can fully embrace physical discoveries - whereas physicalism can admit no part of teleology. This asymmetry creates profound advantages in the philosophy of science for teleological frameworks. See mo...
