They then set about terrorizing the Yazidis, who they see as apostates and devil worshippers who need to be cleansed.

Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.
The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

For the eight million people living under ISIS, daily life is increasingly dominated by a terrifying bureaucracy. More than oil, it is extortion, taxes and seizure of property driving ISIS's growing economy.
Refugees fleeing from the so-called Islamic caliphate describe how the barbarism of ISIS is becoming more systematic. One woman in a German refugee centre describes the IS extortion first-hand: "You have to pay taxes for everything - for your motorcycle, a marriage or birth certificate, water, electricity. No matter what". Those who do not comply with these rules are simply killed. Newspaper reporter Christopher Reuter is an expert in the structure of ISIS in Syria and Iraq. In contrast to the image of ISIS as an uncivilised 'death cult', Reuter argues that they have established a modern civil service capable of sustaining their territorial ambitions. This view is shared by terrorism expert Loretta Napoleoni, who believes ISIS is more professionally organised than the West realises. "The biggest mistake that the West is making today is that IS is acting as a state." Leaked budget papers from Syria reveal the extent to which ISIS is financed through the systematic exploitation of civilians: 44.7 percent compared to only 27.7 percent from oil sales. If true, this "loot economy" will significantly limit the effectiveness of air strikes in halting their expansion. Is it time we reassessed our understanding of ISIS?

Islamic State (IS) fighters swept into the Iraqi city of Sinjar in August 2014, forcing Kurdish peshmerga forces to retreat. The city, primarily made up of Yazidis, a religious minority with roots going back thousands of years in the region, was soon overran with IS militants. They then set about terrorizing the Yazidis, who they see as apostates and devil worshippers who need to be cleansed.
Tens of thousands of people fled, with many ending up on in dire straits on nearby Mount Sinjar, creating an urgent humanitarian situation that led to US President Barack Obama ordering American jets to bomb IS for the first time. Thousands of Yazidis were killed by IS, with women being raped and enslaved to be sold as property. Mass graves are still being discovered.
Kurdish militias have battled for Sinjar since then without much progress. And up until now the city has remained under IS control.
Over the course of two days in mid-November, VICE News embedded with peshmerga forces as they retook the city in a massive push involving 7,500 troops, with the hopes of cutting off the resupply routes between IS territory in Syria and Iraq. Snaking through the desert in large convoys with heavy artillery and tanks, and backed by international coalition air strikes, they faced little resistance besides snipers, mortars, and IEDs as IS fled and the city was taken back.

In February 2015, three teenage schoolgirls left the comfort of their homes in East London and traveled to Syria to join the self-styled Islamic State (IS). Around 60 women and girls are thought to have made the same journey from Britain.
The story of their disappearance dominated the UK press for weeks and the blame game inevitably began to hunt out whose fault it was. When the families of Amira Abase, Shamima Begum, and Kadiza Sultana found out that the police had been interviewing the trio about another girl from their school who had already joined IS, the case was picked up for investigation by the government. But soon certain sections of the press would turn on the families themselves.
VICE News gained intimate access to the father of one girl, Amira, and joined him as he dealt with the press and parliament to find out what it's like for those left behind by the tragic choices of their loved ones.

BALTIMORE — A 30-year-old Maryland man who received thousands of dollars from the Islamic State purportedly to wage an attack on U.S. soil was arrested on Friday.
According to a press release published on Monday by the U.S. Department of Justice, Edgewood, Maryland resident Mohamed Elshinawy received at least $8,700 from Islamic State contacts in Syria and Egypt and used the money to buy communication tools, including a laptop, phones, and call cards.
A criminal complaint filed in the District Court of Maryland and published by Buzzfeed states that Elshinawy caught the FBI's attention after he received a money transfer from an individual in Egypt who was being monitored by the agency.
The complaint said Elshinawy admitted to receiving money from ISIS after being shown the transfer records from Western Union and PayPal during an interrogation. He told authorities he was not planning to carry out an attack and simply intended to scam money out of the militant group.
The FBI traced his social media communication and discovered that he pledged allegiance to ISIS in February this year and wanted to die as a martyr, according to the complaint. He was subsequently charged on a federal criminal complaint for attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State, according to an FBI press release published on Monday.
Reuters reports that more than 70 people have been arrested by U.S. authorities for suspected ties to ISIS since 2014.

A year after the Islamic State's lightning conquest of Iraq's second-largest city of Mosul, the poorly-trained and equipped Kurdish peshmerga forces are the international coalition's only reliable boots on the ground in northern Iraq.
The Pentagon's hopes of recapturing the city by spring 2015 have been dashed by the military failures of the Iraqi Army further south, leaving the peshmerga to defend a 600-mile long frontline almost encircling Mosul, fending off constant Islamic State assaults with insufficient supplies of ammunition and modern weapons.
In part one of a three-part series, VICE News embeds with Kurdish peshmerga fighters defending the hills above the Islamic State-held city of Sinjar.

Phil Campion, a former SAS soldier and a veteran of just about every major conflict zone in the world, travels to the front line in Syria and Iraq to meet the men and women taking the fight to Islamic State.
Known as 'Big Phil', he filmed for Sky with both the YPG and Kurdish Peshmerga, observing their war against a well-equipped and motivated enemy.
He experienced some of the worst battles of his life while embedded with the Kurds and met the all-female fighting units of the YPJ, described as a secret weapon of the war.
Are those fighting Islamic State properly equipped for battle? And is this a fight they can win? Find out in our special report.

Islamic State stands with al-Qaeda as one of the most dangerous jihadist groups, after its gains in Syria and Iraq.
Under its former name Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis), it was formed in April 2013, growing out of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI).
It has since been disavowed by al-Qaeda, but has become one of the main jihadist groups fighting government forces in Syria and Iraq.
Its precise size is unclear but it is thought to include thousands of fighters, including many foreign jihadists.
The organisation is led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Little is known about him, but it is believed he was born in Samarra, north of Baghdad, in 1971 and joined the insurgency that erupted in Iraq soon after the 2003 US-led invasion.
In 2010 he emerged as the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, one of the groups that later became Isis.
The group has seen considerable military success. In March 2013, it took over the Syrian city of Raqqa - the first provincial capital to fall under rebel control. In January 2014, it capitalised on growing tension between Iraq's Sunni minority and Shia-led government by taking control of the predominantly Sunni city of Fallujah, in the western province of Anbar.

EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi
The brutal beheadings of Japanese nationals Kenji Goto and Haruna Yukawa by the Islamic State in January have shocked the island nation and lent momentum to an effort to expand the limitations imposed on its constitution and military after its defeat by the United States in World War II.
Leftists in Japan fear that the incident will encourage a departure from the country's pacifist constitution, whose Article 9 states that "the Japanese people forever renounce… the threat or use of force as a means of settling international disputes." Right-wingers, meanwhile, see an opportunity to allow Japan to assert itself as a truly sovereign state.
VICE News reports from Japan as its prime minister and right wing are pushing for re-militarization of the pacifist nation, amid protests from the left who staunchly oppose any changes to Article 9 of the constitution.

EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi
Last summer, the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) swept from Syria into northern Iraq, routing Iraqi security forces and seizing the city of Mosul. Soon afterward, the group declared the establishment of a dubious "caliphate" in the area it controls and rebranded itself the Islamic State. With Iraq's army weakened and radical militants advancing on Baghdad, the country's Iran-backed Shia militias — which have their own history of sectarian abuses — fought back, halting the Islamic State's progress.
The militias have successfully combated Islamic State fighters on the ground with the assistance of air strikes from a US-led military coalition. But their growing influence within Iraq's government amid accusations that they have harmed Sunnis in areas that they control has led many to fear that the militias threaten the country's fragile sectarian and political balance.
VICE News traveled to Iraq in December to witness firsthand how Shia militias are taking the fight to the Islamic State, and to document the fallout of their controversial rise to power.

The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced their intention to reestablish the caliphate and declared their leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during recent advances in Iraq, the Islamic State’s expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
Elsewhere in territory it has held for some time, the Islamic State has gone about consolidating power and setting up a government dictated by Sharia law. While the world may not recognize the Islamic State, in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the group is already in the process of building a functioning regime.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings. In part one, Dairieh heads to the frontline in Raqqa, where Islamic State fighters are laying siege to the Syrian Army’s division 17 base.

A teacher has been attacked in a classroom in Aubervilliers, a suburb of the French capital, Paris, by a man citing the so-called Islamic State.
The attacker shouted: "It's Daesh [Islamic State]. It's a warning", stabbing the teacher with a box cutter or scissors before fleeing.
The teacher's life is not in danger, police said,
France remains on high alert after the terrorist attacks in Paris on 13 November that left 130 people dead.
Fled on foot
Police sources said the teacher was stabbed in the side and throat at about 07:30 (06:30 GMT) as he was preparing for class in the Jean-Perrin d'Aubervilliers school.
The attacker reportedly arrived wearing a balaclava and gloves but was unarmed and used weapons he found in the classroom.
The man fled on foot after the attack and is still on the run. A search team has been deployed. The anti-terrorism branch of the Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation for attempted murder in relation to a terrorist act.
The Islamic State's French-language magazine Dar-al-Islam recently urged followers to kill teachers in France, describing them as "enemies of Allah" for teaching secularism, Agence France-Presse news agency reports.
Security has been strengthened at schools since the Paris attacks.
Last week, Education Minister Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said the terrorist threat was "real and permanent", adding: "All public places must be protected, particularly schools."
Aubervilliers is in the Seine-Saint-Denis department of the Ile-de-France region.
In the 2010 census, Aubervilliers had a population of 76,000, including a large number of immigrants, mostly from North African Maghreb countries.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged international unity in the fight against the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL), stating nations should “put aside all collateral issues and … concentrate on the fight against terrorism,” during a speech in Moscow, Monday.
Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): "Recent events indicate that we can be successful only when acting together, neither with bipolar nor unipolar worlds, as well as the attempts to act in a one-sided fashion produce [an undesirable] outcome. They are counterproductive and bring chaos and uncertainty."
Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): "Recent bloody acts swept through France, the United States, the Middle East and Africa. Russia also sustained grievous losses when our passenger plane was brought down over the Sinai Peninsula. This shows that the plans on the creation of some ‘islands of safety’ and [plans] to cordon-off restless areas don’t work. As I have already said, only together we can ensure global security and sustainable growth. The necessity to put aside all the collateral issues and to concentrate on the fight against terrorism, which is regarded as the common threat to all the states, is obvious.

According to a German magazine, Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday brushed off what the magazine said was a request from the United States to provide more military help in the fight against Islamic State. On Saturday, Der Spiegel magazine reported that U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter had sent a letter asking for a bigger military contribution from Germany, a week after parliament approved a plan to join the campaign in Syria. A German Defense Ministry spokesman confirmed a letter had been received from the United States and its content was under consideration, giving no further details. Der Spiegel said the letter did not make specific demands and was similar to requests sent to other U.S. partners.

The Islamic State: A Video Introduction with Aaron Zelin
How did the so-called Islamic State (IS) originate? What are its goals? What is the scale of its recruitment in Europe and elsewhere?
As the United States leads a coalition to thwart military advances by IS – also known as ISIS, ISIL, and Daesh – Institute Richard Borow Fellow Aaron Y. Zelin explains the jihadist group’s origins, objectives, and operations in this introductory video presentation.
The Dáesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) (ISIL; Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام
The Dáesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) (ISIL; Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS, /ˈ...
The Dáesh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) (ISIL; Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS, /ˈaɪsɨs/), the Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham,[28] or simply Islamic State (IS),[29] is a Wahhabi/Salafi jihadist extremist militant group, self-proclaimed to be a caliphate and Islamic state. It is led by and mainly composed of Sunni Arabs from Iraq and Syria. As of March 2015, it has control over territory occupied by 10 million people in Iraq and Syria, and through loyal local groups, has control over small areas of Libya, Nigeria and Afghanistan. The group also operates or has affiliates in other parts of the world, including North Africa and South Asia.[30][31][32][33][34][35]
The group is known in Arabic as ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah fī 'l-ʿIrāq wa-sh-Shām, leading to the acronym Da'ish or Daesh (داعش, Arabic pronunciation: [ˈdaːʕiʃ]),[36][37] the Arabic equivalent of "ISIL". On 29 June 2014, the group proclaimed itself to be a worldwide caliphate, with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi being named its caliph, and renamed itself ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah (الدولة الإسلامية, "Islamic State" (IS)). As a caliphate, it claims religious, political and military authority over all Muslims worldwide, and that "the legality of all emirates, groups, states, and organisations, becomes null by the expansion of the khilāfah's [caliphate's] authority and arrival of its troops to their areas".[28][38][39][40] The United Nations has held ISIL responsible for human rights abuses and war crimes, and Amnesty International has reported ethnic cleansing by the group on a "historic scale". The group has been designated a terrorist organisation by the United Nations, the European Union and member states, the United States, India, Indonesia, Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Syria and other countries. Over 60 countries are directly or indirectly waging war against ISIL.
The group originated as Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad in 1999, which pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda in 2004. The group participated in the Iraqi insurgency that followed the March 2003 invasion of Iraq by Western forces. In January 2006, it joined other Sunni insurgent groups to form the Mujahideen Shura Council, which proclaimed the formation of the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) in October 2006. After the Syrian Civil War began in March 2011, the ISI, under the leadership of al-Baghdadi, sent delegates into Syria in August 2011. These fighters named themselves Jabhat an-Nuṣrah li-Ahli ash-Shām—al-Nusra Front—and established a large presence in Sunni-majority areas of Syria, within the governorates of Ar-Raqqah, Idlib, Deir ez-Zor, and Aleppo. In April 2013, al-Baghdadi announced the merger of the ISI with al-Nusra Front and that the name of the reunited group was now the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). However, Abu Mohammad al-Julani and Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leaders of al-Nusra and al-Qaeda respectively, rejected the merger. After an eight-month power struggle, al-Qaeda cut all ties with ISIL on 3 February 2014, citing its failure to consult and "notorious intransigence". In Syria, the group has conducted ground attacks on both government forces and rebel factions in the Syrian Civil War. The group gained prominence after it drove Iraqi government forces out of key cities in western Iraq in an offensive initiated in early 2014. Iraq's territorial loss almost caused a collapse of the Iraqi government and prompted a renewal of US military action in Iraq

A new video purportedly released by the Islamic State shows Filipino jihadists training in military exercises in the jungles of Mindanao. The video was released on December 20, 2015 and is titled simply “Training Camp.”
Mindanao has been a place of Islamic tension since the 1960s when political tensions and open hostilities developed between the government of the Philippines and Muslim rebel groups. ISIS is just the latest in a long history of Islamists.
Islam is the Philippines’ second largest religion after Catholicism. It is mainly practiced in the southernmost island of the three island nation, called Mindanao. Mindanao is an autonomous region of the Philippines, mainly due to religious tension with the other majority Catholic islands. Some extremists there are attempting to overthrow the government and join the Islamic State’s “caliphate.”

PART 2 : In a new video purportedly released by the Islamic State of Afghanistan, AKA “Wilayat Khurasan,” one man is beheaded and two are executed before a suicide bomber detonates in an army outpost. The video is titled “Khorasan,The Graveyard of Murtadeen.” “Khurasan” is a Daesh occupied “province” announced in January 2015 that includes areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan. According to Islamic Basics, a “murtadeen” is an apostate, or someone who willfully leaves Islam.
In the video, various jihadist military footage is shown before the video cuts to a beheading and execution scene somewhere in the mountains of Afghanistan or Pakistan. One man is beheaded and two men are shot point blank in the back of the head. Later, a suicide bomber says goodbye to his fellow ISIS militants before driving a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) into what appears to be an Afghan National Army outpost.

PART 3:In a new video purportedly released by the Islamic State, ISIS takes aim at the “coalition against terrorism” that the Kingdom allegedly started with 34 Islamic countries. The video is one of a grouping of propaganda released today with titles like, “Come Over, You Cowards” and “Waiting for You in Syria” after the Saudi announcement.
In a “royal decree” dated December 16, 2015, Prime Minister Tammam Salam of Saudi Arabia said that the Kingdom had formed a multinational coalition with majority Muslim nations like Turkey, Pakistan, Nigeria, Qatar, Egypt, Morocco, Yemen, Jordan, Lebanon, and Malaysia to help fight ISIS. However, there seems to be disparity in the truthfulness of the Kingdom’s royal decree.
Lebanon’s The Daily Star reports that their “Foreign Ministry… denied having knowledge of Saudi Arabia’s creation of an Islamic anti-terrorism coalition… contradicting an earlier statement made by Prime Minister Tammam Salam implying that Lebanon was a member of the alliance.”
Malaysia’s The Rakyat Post also reports that their Defense Minister denies Saudi Arabia’s claim, as well as Pakistan’s Dawn News, which titled their article on the matter: “Pakistan surprised by its inclusion in 34-nation military alliance.”
In the above video, ISIS accuses Saudi Arabia of colluding with “crusaders.” They show galloping horses and knights who fight against each other on a desert battlefield. Later, a man in a blue boilersuit is executed for allegedly being a collaborator with the Saudi regime.

As the Islamic State massacred its way throughout Iraq and Syria this summer, a separate battle took place in neighboring Lebanon.
This summer, the Islamic State invaded the Lebanese border town of Arsal, beheading captured soldiers and unleashing waves of lethal car bombs, destabilizing the country.
Hezbollah, one of the world's strongest guerrilla armies, has also become involved — either defending Lebanon, or making things worse, depending on who you ask.
VICE News traveled to Lebanon to explore the battle being waged by one of the world's fiercest militant groups against one of the Middle East’s smallest and most fragile nations.

The Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, has become a powerful threat in Iraq and Syria. It has declared itself a nation, chosen a radical leader, and has beheaded both American and British workers operating in Syria. Further, its goal of invading Lebanon and even Israel is causing much alarm. Where does the Islamic State fit into biblical prophecy? In this program, you’ll discover how the Islamic States efforts may serve as part of the path toward what the Bible predicts will take place in the last days.

As bombs start dropping in Syria and Iraq, the world is once again being asked to cower in fear of a shadowy terror group that most people hadn't heard of just a few months ago. But even the most cursory examination of ISIS's past, its connections, and the actors populating it reveal a very different story than the one we are being asked to believe in. Fake terrorists. Foreign backers. False flags. Meet the new boogeyman, same as the old boogeyman.

This year, the jihadi group knows as the Islamic State swept into significant portions of Iraq and Syria, determined to reestablish the caliphate. Their expansion is only accelerating and the group is now considered the wealthiest militant organization in the world. In this week’s episode of VICE Meets, journalist Graeme Wood breaks down the groups religious ideologies and visions for the future.

Raising its black flag over the rugged mountainous regions of Afghanistan, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has emerged as a new threat to the war-ravaged country as it battles the Taliban for supremacy.
Employing violence and brutality used by the group in Syria and Iraq, Wilayat Khorasan, (the ancient name ISIL has chosen for the region made up of Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of neighbouring countries), has emerged in seven different areas and vowed to step up operations, where the veteran fighters, the Taliban, once held sway.
Fighting to reconstitute the historical Khorasan into the so-called 'Caliphate' of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the group says it has grand plans for the region, starting with uprooting the Taliban and the government of President Ashraf Ghani.
Causing friction with the regional and overall leadership of the Taliban, armed battles have increased over the past few months with dozens of Taliban fighters killed in the clashes, most notably in the Taliban stronghold of Nangarhar province.
ISIL's local chapter has also managed to attract dozens of fighters from the Taliban's ranks into its fold, while foreign fighters unable to make it to Syria and Iraq have thronged to the group's territory.
In ISIL and the Taliban we look at the group's growing popularity, how it made steady inroads into the country and the threat it poses for the future of Afghanistan.
We gain exclusive access to ISIL's central leadership, and meet children as young as 5-years-old being trained to fight and dedicate their lives to the 'Caliphate'.

Key topics covered include:
The Caliphate Project
Flow of Foreign Fighters
Recruitment Tactics
Sources of Funding
Split with al-Qaeda
At the Institute, Zelin’s research focuses on how jihadist groups are adjusting to the new political environment in the era of Arab uprisings and Salafi politics in countries transitioning to democracy. He is also a PhD candidate at King's College of London and a fellow at its associated International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence.
Zelin’s presentation was filmed at a January 13, 2015 event sponsored by LINK, an Institute program for young professionals.
