A foreman is responsible for ensuring that employees who are at a construction site are following the correct safety precautions dictated by legislation and by the individual company responsible for the project.
They also work as a point of reference from the site to higher levels of management and can assist in ensuring tasks are prioritized in the right order. Moreover, Foremen can be responsible for allocating tasks to construction workers.
The foreman can also train new employees and hold meetings with members of the construction team to make sure work is being conducted according to schedule.
A foreman needs to have good time-management and organizational skills with the ability to manage people and ample experience within the construction industry.
To be successful in a role such as this, an individual must be a good motivator and able to influence a culture of camaraderie in a work place. They must also be able to multi-task, work well within high-stress environments and resolve issues efficiently.
A foreman needs to be able to read, analyse and interpret information and policies. They need to have great math skills in order to apply mathematical concepts within their work. Foreman's need to be able to define problems, collect data and form valid conclusions.
A high school education is usually preferred for such roles or a proven ability to manage documents and records to a high standard, as writing reports, correspondence, procedures and other documentation is required in this role. Depending on the company, a first aid certificate may also be required.
A foreman will usually organize daily briefings to their team, oversee the operations on a site, supervise staff and maintain health and safety regulations. Foremen's may be required to work unusual hours depending on the deadline of for the project or travel for their jobs. Skills required include:
