Couriers use vans, cars, bicycles, motorbikes and scooters to pick up and deliver goods, documents, messages and packages usually over short distances in a town or city. Some delivery drivers are self-employed and some work on a sub-contract basis. They spend most of the day making deliveries, which allows them to work without much supervision. The job can be physically demanding, as many couriers use and often have to make deliveries in bad weather. Couriers who use cars, vans or trucks to make their deliveries may have to transport heavy materials.

It can be a stressful job as couriers must also make timely deliveries. Most couriers work a standard week of Monday through Friday, though night and weekend shifts may be required. Self-employed couriers usually work irregular hours. Most training is done on the job although couriers who transport medical specimens or organ donations may receive special training. It is essential to have a valid driver's licence and a clean driving record. Most couriers also need to perform maintenance on their vehicle.

Responsibilities & Skills

Couriers assist with the loading and unloading of goods. It's their job to plan the shortest delivery route and drive to the destination safely and quickly to deliver the goods. They often communicate via a two-way radio or mobile phone to keep in contact with customers and their depot. They may be involved with taking payments and giving receipts. complete paperwork and use a handheld scanning device. Sometimes they have to give advice to customers.
