A solicitor is a type of lawyer who provides legal advice and support to clients.
Solicitors can specialise in areas such as property, probate, taxation, finance, workers' compensation, family law, personal injuries litigation, commercial or criminal law.
Some solicitors provide expert advice on issues that people face in their day-to-day life such as writing wills, buying and selling houses or dealing with relationship breakdowns. They also advise people of their rights and ensuring they receive compensation if they have been unfairly treated. Other solicitors help businesses with commercial transactions.
A high degree of motivation and determination is necessary to work as a solicitor as it is a complex and challenging occupation where no two days are the same.
Solicitors can work in-house in government, commerce and industry, banking and finance, construction, courts or in private practice.
Solicitors have many different responsibilities. Usually, a solicitor is engaged by a client to provide legal advice which can include drafting letters of advice, representing a client in court, conducting negotiations and undertaking legal research.
Much of a solicitor's day is spent drafting and reviewing legal documents, researching the legal angles of a matter and communicating with clients, barristers and other solicitors.
