If you have a passion for wine and food, then becoming a sommelier, or wine waiter just might be the career for you. Sommeliers are highly trained professionals with an extensive knowledge of wines and the service of beverages. But be warned, in Australia there are few full time jobs and there are only a handful of formal training opportunities. Many sommeliers gain valuable experience working in vineyards, travelling overseas, and working in a specialized wine shop.
Sommeliers not only work with wines, but also specialise in serving beers, spirits, cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages and coffee.
Typically, a sommelier starts work as an assistant in the hospitality industry, learning from an experienced sommelier. After a few years, most sommeliers find work in fine dining restaurants. Sometimes, sommeliers go on to become freelance wine experts and consultants for more than one restaurant.
Sommeliers are responsible for buying, storing and cellaring wines at a restaurant. They are usually responsible for developing wine lists, serving wine, training other restaurant staff in wine service and matching wines to food.
A sommelier also works on the floor of the restaurant and advises customers on a wine to match their food.
