Bosniaks Genocide - Systematic rape of women and girls committed by Serbian Nazi fascists.

Rape in the Bosnian war pertains to the characteristic elements of sexual abuse in the ethnic clash between Serb, Croat and Bosniak factions in the Bosnian war. While on a lesser scale, women of all ethnic groups were affected, more specifically, rape was used as a systematized instrument of war by Serb armed forces predominantly targeting women and girls of the Bosniak ethnic group for physical and moral destruction. Estimates of the number of women raped during the war range from 20,000 to 50,000. This has been referred to as "mass rape", particularly with regard to the coordinated use of rape as a weapon of war. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) declared that "systematic rape", and "sexual enslavement" in time of war was a crime against humanity, second only to the war crime of genocide. The Kunarac case was the first time in judicial history anyone had been found guilty of these crimes.
According to Margot Wallström, U.N. Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, only 12 cases out of an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 have been prosecuted as of 2010.
Ethnic dimension
Early United Nations investigations concluded that "Rape has been reported to have been committed by all sides to the conflict. However, the largest number of reported victims have been Bosnian Muslims, and the largest number of alleged perpetrators have been Bosnian Serbs. There are few reports of rape and sexual assault between members of the same ethnic group." It has been claimed that "For the Serbs, the desire to degrade, humiliate, and impregnate Bosnian Muslim women with 'little Chetniks' was paramount." Women were forced to go full term with their pregnancies and give birth. Many of the reports of the abuses illustrated the ethnic dimension of the rapes.
The women knew the rapes would begin when 'Marš na Drinu' was played over the loudspeaker of the main mosque. ('Mars na Drinu,' or 'March on the Drina', is reportedly a former Chetnik fighting song that was banned during the Tito years.) While 'Mars na Drinu' was playing, the women were ordered to strip and soldiers entered the homes taking the ones they wanted. The age of women taken ranged from 12 to 60. Frequently the soldiers would seek out mother and daughter combinations. Many of the women were severely beaten during the rapes.

War crimes tribunal will hear secrets of support for Milosevic's ethnic cleansing.
It is what Hellenes have long feared: the shattering of a conspiracy of silence that has surrounded the role of Greek volunteers who proudly flew their flag at Srebrenica, after participating in Europe's worst massacre since the Second World War, when 7,000 men, women and children died.
Next week, as Greece settles into the presidency of the European Union, Milan Milutinovic, Serbia's recently retired president, will be brought before the war crimes tribunal at The Hague. Greek involvement in the atrocity, as well as other secrets Athens would prefer buried, could be revealed when the 60-year-old testifies.
No one, it is said, played such a pivotal role in the alliance between Athens and Belgrade during the Nineties Balkan conflicts. As Yugoslavia's ambassador to Greece, Milutinovic was Slobodan Milosevic's most trusted lieutenant. His links with Greece's political, religious and business elites were allegedly crucial to Serbia's secret economic infrastructure. They allowed the country to evade United Nations sanctions and, according to the International Criminal Tribunal, contributed considerably towards Milosevic's war machine.
When the diplomat was promoted to Foreign Minister in 1994, he retained his Athens post for several months when, EU diplomats say, he stashed away funds to buy villas and other prime properties in Athens and Crete at the behest of his boss.
With Greece's admiring public, pro-Serbian church, tolerant media and governments that supported Milosevic, Athens was seen as a bolt-hole by the now disgraced president. As Bosnian Serb ethnic cleansers torched villages, it was here Milosevic would escape to enjoy the hospitality of Greek politicians. Marko Milosevic, his lascivious smuggler son, declared Greece 'my first home'.
'This is our best-kept secret, the subject no politician of any persuasion has ever wanted to broach,' said Takis Michas, author of Unholy Alliance: Greece and Milosevic's Serbia. 'In an era where everyone is saying sorry, in Greece at least no one has shown remorse for the crimes in Bosnia when undoubtedly a significant proportion of the political establishment bear some responsibility.'
The US-published book, yet to be printed in Greek, records in shocking detail the relationship between the two Orthodox nations, including the leaking of Nato military intelligence under socialist leader Andreas Papandreou.
The Greeks know their past may be catching up with them. After last month's long statement of contrition before the Hague tribunal by the former Bosnian Serb leader, Biljana Plavsic, many believe it is only a matter of time before others open up too.
A Dutch documentary investigating Greek complicity in the Serb wars was aired on local television in which a director of the semi-official Athens News Agency, Nikolas Voulelis, admitted to widespread censorship. During the wars the Greek media was fanatically pro-Serb, portraying Yugoslav Muslims as 'infidel Turks' bent on destroying their Orthodox brethren. 'Editorial interference was a given,' he said.
But it was not only hospitality or money that the Greeks offered. Spiritual succour was provided by the Greek Orthodox church which sent priests to the front line (several clerics received bravery medals from Plavsic).
In a step repeated in no other country, Archbishop Serafeim invited the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic to visit Athens in 1993. At a mass rally attended by prominent politicians, the indicted war criminal proclaimed: 'We have only God and the Greeks on our side.'
Last year, in a 7,000-page report that the Dutch authorities commissioned into the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, Greece was revealed to have sent shipments of light arms and ammunition to the Bosnian Serb army between 1994 and 1995. The report describes how Greek volunteers were implored, in intercepted army telephone conversations, to raise the Greek flag after the town fell. In one, General Ratko Mladic asked that they record the scene on video for propaganda purposes.
Around 100 soldiers are believed to have joined the Greek Volunteer Guard, formed at Mladic's request. The unit, which fought alongside Russians and Ukrainians, was led by Serb officers and had its own insignia - the double-headed eagle of Byzantium. At least four of its members were awarded the White Eagle medal of honour by Karadzic.
Although their 'heroic' exploits were widely reported in the Greek press, the volunteers have gone to ground since the creation of the war crimes tribunal. No government or party has ever sought an inquiry into their activities.

Paxman-esque tenacity is prized among TV interviewers, but sometimes - particularly when your line of questioning is a ludicrous and not-so-faintly Islamophobic one - it's better to just let go. Here Fox News host Lauren Green tries to pin down respected scholar Reza Aslan on why, as a Muslim, he felt capable of writing a book about the life of Jesus. From the BBC documentary "Death of Yugoslavia".
The about one year long conflict between the Croats and the Bosnian Muslims.
The Death of Yugoslavia is a BBC documentary series first broadcast in 1995, and is also the name of a book written by Allan Little and Laura Silber that accompanies the series. It covers the collapse of Yugoslavia and the subsequent wars that followed. It is notable in its combination of never-before-seen archive footage interspersed with interviews of most of the main players in the conflict, including Slobodan Milošević, Radovan Karadžić, Franjo Tuđman and Alija Izetbegović.
The series was awarded with a BAFTA award in 1996 for Best Factual Series.Because of the series large amount of interviews with prominent leaders and commanders of the conflict, it has been frequently used by ICTY in war crimes prosecutions.
All the papers relating to the documentary series, including full transcripts of the many valuable interviews conducted with participants, are lodged at the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives at King's College, University of London.
During the trial of Slobodan Milošević before the ICTY, Judge Bonomy called the nature of much of the commentary "tendentious".This was because there were instances in which an interview in the Serbian language was subtitled incorrectly and often in a misleading manner (for example, the subtitling translated an interviewee saying that "Milosevic always won the elections on a nationalistic platform and nothing else", rather than "... on a national platform... ")
The Croat–Bosniak War was a conflict between the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the self-proclaimed secessionist Croatian Community of Herzeg-Bosnia, supported by the Republic of Croatia, that lasted from 19 June 1992 – 23 February 1994. The conflict came as a result of the Karađorđevo and Graz agreements which envisioned the partition of Bosnia and Herzegovina into Serb and Croat entities, and began when Bosnian Croat forces turned on Bosniaks, who had been their allies up to that point. Due to the involvement of Croatia's armed forces which supported Bosnian Croats, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) effectively determined the war's nature to be international between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in numerous verdicts against Bosnian Croat political and military leaders. The Croat-Bosniak war is often referred to as a "war within a war" because it was part of the larger Bosnian War.
There are no precise statistics dealing with the casualties of the Croat-Bosniak conflict along ethnic lines. The Sarajevo-based Research and Documentation Center's (IDC) data from 2007 on human losses in the regions caught in the Croat-Bosniak conflict as part of the wider Bosnian War, however, can serve as a rough approximation. According to this data, in Central Bosnia most of the 10,448 documented casualties (soldiers and civilians) were Bosniaks (62%), with Croats in second (24%) and Serbs (13%) in third place. The municipalities of Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje and Bugojno also geographically located in Central Bosnia, with the 1,337 documented casualties are not included in Central Bosnia statistics, but in Vrbas region statistics. Approximately 70-80% of the casualties from Gornje Povrbasje were Bosniaks. In the region of Neretva river with 6,717 casualties, 54% were Bosniaks, 24% Serbs and 21% Croats. The casualties in those regions were mostly but not exclusively the consequence of Croat-Bosniak conflict. To a lesser extent the conflict with the Serbs also resulted in a number of casualties included in the statistics.

yeah i was hanging out at the restaurant and the newspaper people wanted to interview me because i was bike touring. serbians and bosnians took great interest in me. honking at me in the streets and stopping their cars and asking me questions and stuff. I don't think they've been getting a lot of tourists lately, probably because of the war, it's beautiful here though and the people are really friendly.

One of the most interesting and rare interviews (While Angels Sleep) with His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Pavle who reposed in the Lord on November 15, 2009.
Patriarch Pavle was known for his asceticism and modest living. He would walk around town on foot or take public transportation regularly among crowds of people.
Part 1: here he talks about his views on evil, human nature, vice and virtue as well as bad habits that we need to get rid of.

English/Nat
The U-S State Department's top human rights expert, John Shattuck, visited the two Serbs officers detained by the Bosnian government and at the center of the crisis to the Bosnian peace process.
After the visit on Sunday, Shattuck, who has been investigating war crimes and suspected mass graves in Bosnia, said the United States backed the International War Crimes tribunal investigation of the two senior officers.
Shattuck also said the prisoners were being treated well.
The envoy was in Sarajevo accompanying U-S mediator Richard Holbrooke who is struggling to restart the peace process stalled by their arrest.
Bosnian Serb officers General Djordje Djukic and Colonel Aleksa Krsmanovic have been held in Sarajevo's central prison since they were arrested last month.
The Bosnian Government authorities are holding them on suspicion of involvement in war crimes.
After visiting the men Shattuck said he was satisfied with their treatment.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I came to see the circumstances under which they're being held, the conditions. I think their health is good. The conditions under which they're being held are very much up to international standards. They seem to be being well-treated, they had no specific complaints about the conditions, and at least one of them, both of them, are receiving medical assistance and one of them was visited by his wife yesterday, as permitted by the court."
(Q. What's the interest of the United States Government in this matter now. To see the men fairly treated, to see them released, or what's your goal?)
"Our goal is certainly to see the International War Crimes tribunal serve the purpose for which it was established, which is to investigate and prosecute war crimes, and certainly the interests that the tribunal has shown in these two cases the United States strongly supports, the process that the tribunal is following here, including continuing as we understand it to interview and investigate the circumstances in which these people, these two individuals are under investigation, and we support that process and that's why I was here today."
(Q. Do you have any concerns about the way in which the Bosnian Government apprehended these people initially, or is that something that is not part of your standard remit?)
"Well we are also certainly looking at that but I'm not going to have any particular comment to make about that today. It seemed that when these people were apprehended they were immediately looked at for issues of war crimes. Thank you."
(Q. Will you be going with Mr Holbrooke to Zagreb?)
"Yes."

The officers' arrest had led the Bosnian Serbs to sever ties with the government and the NATO-led peace force.

Thousands gathered in the northeast Bosnian town of Kalesija on Saturday to bury the remains of 32 Muslim Bosniaks killed by Bosnian Serb forces at the start of the country's 1992-95 war.
They were victims of a brutal campaign to remove the non-Serb population from the nearby town of Zvornik and other areas the Serbs controlled.
The campaign included killings, expulsions and detention in concentration camps until no non-Serbs were left in the once-mixed town.
The bodies of the victims were found in mass graves, identified through DNA analysis and buried at a cemetery in Kalesija where hundreds of victims previously found already have been laid to rest.
Hasan Elez came to bury his father, Aliji Elez.
"I can't say that it is easy for me, but it's much easier now, when my father is finally laid to rest," he said.
A total 1,998 people were killed in Zvornik during the campaign.
The bodies of 611 are still missing.

STORYLINE:
Around two thousand Muslim Bosniaks converged on the eastern Bosnian town of Visegrad on Saturday to remember friends and relatives killed there by forces led by Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic at the start of Bosnia's 1992-95 war.
Arriving on busses, hundreds of mourners wept quietly as they threw almost three thousand roses from a bridge into the Drina River, which divides Bosnia Herzegovina from Serbia.
The ceremony was organised by various associations for victims of those who were ethnically cleansed from the eastern town after it had been overrun by Serb forces in May 1992.
"It is always hard for me to be here, especially when I am standing on this bridge which, in 1992, was covered with Bosniak blood, like a carpet," said Bakira Hasecic, a victim of Bosnian Serb rape campaign in wartime Visegrad.
People from Visegrad who were expelled in 1992 gather every year to commemorate their dead.
This year, the ceremony came just days after Mladic was arrested on Thursday in Serbia on war crimes charges stemming from the 1995 indictment issued against him by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
After 16-years avoiding international authorities, Mladic could be extradited to The Hague as early as Monday, should an appeal by his defence lawyers fail.
But for some families of the victims, justice has come too late.
"If people can, they should forget all this, that would be the best," said Adila Semdo whose two brothers-in-law and father-in-law were killed in Visegrad in 1992.
Mladic's alleged responsibility for 1992 ethnic cleansing of large swaths of the then predominantly Bosniak eastern Bosnia is mentioned in the indictment, along with 1995 Srebrenica massacre and 42-month siege of Sarajevo.
The area around Visegrad saw some of the bloodiest crimes committed during Bosnian war.
Thousands of civilians from the area were rounded up and killed by Mladic's troops and scores of non-Serb women were imprisoned and raped.
The bodies of hundreds of victims were dumped into the Drina River from the Ottoman-era Bridge in Visegrad or buried in mass graves around the town.

On the occasion of the 9th of January, celebrated in one part of Bosnia and Herzegovina as the Day of Republic Srpska, and, at the same time, marked among antifascists as the Day of beginning the Genocide upon Bosniaks, the Virtual Museum of Genocide upon Bosniaks published the video called “Republic Srpska- an insult for all antifascists” presenting the genocidal genesis of this BH entity whose existence violates all humanistic and democratic norms.
The video presents the facts about the attack on the BH constitutional and legal system by leaders of the Bosnian Serbs lead by the ICTY convicts for genocide and mass crimes, such as Karadzic, Mladic, Krajisnk, Plavsic. The whole project of creating the Republic Srpska, based on genocide and ethnic cleansing, has been compared with the Third Reich of Adolph Hitler and holocaust upon Jews.
The authors of the video, dr Selma Rizvic and MSc Fatmir Alispahic, say that “the commitment to the abolition of the Republic Srpska presents the highest level of anti-fascist conscience and all those who support the existence of this genocidal entity, from Bosnian to Western politicians, should ask themselves whether they learned anything from lessons on Holocaust”.
- We are afraid that the modern West has more respect for Serb crimes then for Bosniak victims and thus twenty years later there is an anti- Islamic hysteria all over Europe, which threatens by creating the new gas chambers in which, as once the Jews were executed, the European Muslim will be killed.
- The current situation in the West, from Germany to France, has started at the moment when the West accepted the existence of Republic Srpska, built on Srebrenica genocide and the bones of Bosniak victims. The new European future begins with abolition of entities in Bosnia and Herzegovina – say the authors of the video, dr Selma Rizvic and Fatmir Alispahic, MSc

Since today is the national day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, my homeland, I decided to mix something for my country.
This is my tribute to heroes that fought in this war, 22 years ago.
Although we were almost completely unarmed, our army, by army I mean 90% of civilians, we managed create our own and steal enemy weapons and use their weapons against them.
Serbs believed that Bosnia will fall in less than 3 weeks.
War last for 4 years and yet we were victorious.
I personally want to first thank God, then all heroes that gave their lifes, legs and other body parts, so that we can have a normal life.
For Honor. For Bosnia. For Brother.

Two Hours from London is a brilliant, passionate polemic about the war in the former Yugoslavia. The final film by Jill Craigie, it outlines the role played by Serbian nationalism in Yugoslavia's break-up, and how the opportunism of Serbia's president Slobodan Milosevic led to the worst genocide in Europe since the end of the Second World War.
When Two Hours from London was made in the mid-1990s, the prevalent view in the west, and certainly among the media and political class in the UK, was that the wars in the former Yugoslavia were the result of ancient ethnic hatreds. What the film shows is that the predominant cause of the conflict was the drive for 'Greater Serbia'. Far from being a civil war, the war in the former Yugoslav republic of Bosnia-Hercegovina was an invasion by Serbia, which wanted to carve up large parts of Bosnia's territory for itself.
If Two Hours from London has a fault, it is that it is too lenient on Croatia and its then president Franjo Tudjman. Tudjman's own drive for 'Greater Croatia' was also the cause of great bloodshed, including the Muslim-Croat war of 1993-1994.
Its views may have been controversial at the time of its release, but they are now widely accepted - not least by the United Nations, which now views the Bosnian war as an international rather than a civil conflict.

The Bosnian War was an international armed conflict that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 6 April 1992[8][9][10] and 14 December 1995. The war involved several factions. The main belligerents were the forces of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and those of the self-proclaimed Bosnian Serb and Bosnian Croat entities within Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska and Herzeg-Bosnia, who were led and supplied by Serbia and Croatia respectively.[11][12][13]
The war came about as a result of the breakup of Yugoslavia. Following the Slovenian and Croatian secessions from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991, the multi-ethnic Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was inhabited by Muslim Bosniaks (44 percent), Orthodox Serbs (31 percent) and Catholic Croats (17 percent), passed a referendum for independence on 29 February 1992. This was rejected by the political representatives of the Bosnian Serbs, who had boycotted the referendum and established their own republic. Following Bosnia and Herzegovina's declaration of independence (which had gained international recognition), the Bosnian Serbs, supported by the Serbian government of Slobodan Milošević and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), mobilized their forces inside the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to secure Serbian territory, then war soon broke out across the country, accompanied by the ethnic cleansing of the Muslim Bosniak and Croat population, especially in eastern Bosnia and throughout the Republika Srpska.[14]
It was principally a territorial conflict, initially between the Serb forces mostly organized in the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) on the one side, and the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ARBiH) which was largely composed of Bosniaks, and the Croat forces in the Croatian Defence Council (HVO) on the other side. The Croats also aimed at securing parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina as Croatian.[15] The Serb and Croat political leadership agreed on a partition of Bosnia with the Karađorđevo and Graz agreements, resulting in the Croat forces turning against the ARBiH and the Croat-Bosniak war.[16] The war was characterized by bitter fighting, indiscriminate shelling of cities and towns, ethnic cleansing and systematic mass rape, mostly led by Serb and, to a lesser extent, Croat[17] forces. Events such as the Siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre would become iconic of the conflict.
The Serbs, although initially superior due to the vast amount of weapons and resources provided by the JNA, eventually lost momentum as the Bosniaks and Croats allied themselves against the Republika Srpska in 1994 with the creation of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina following the Washington agreement. After the Srebrenica and Markale massacres, NATO intervened in 1995 with Operation Deliberate Force targeting the positions of the Army of the Republika Srpska, which proved key in ending the war.[18][19] The war was brought to an end after the signing of the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina in Paris on 14 December 1995. Peace negotiations were held in Dayton, Ohio, and were finalized on 21 December 1995. The accords are now known as the Dayton Agreement.[20] A 1995 report by the Central Intelligence Agency found that Bosnian Serb forces were responsible for 90% of the war crimes committed during the conflict.[21] As of early 2008, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia had convicted 45 Serbs, 12 Croats and 4 Bosniaks of war crimes in connection with the war in Bosnia.[22] The most recent figures suggest that around 100,000 people were killed during the war.[23][24] In addition, an estimated total of 20,000 to 50,000 women were raped,[25] and over 2.2 million people were displaced,[26] making it the most devastating conflict in Europe since the end of World War II.
