For the past seven years, the Hong Kong Arts Centre has held its annual flagship exhibition focusing on artists from the regions. In the past, we’ve seen both floors of the Pao Galleries turned into a winter forest, and a room filled entirely with balloons that radiated sound and colour when touched. This year, visitors can enter a bamboo forest and revisit the concrete maze of the now defunct Kowloon Walled City as well as viewing works by artists from China, Taiwan, Japan, and South and North Korea.
Last week, when we looked back at some of the most significant art news of the year, one event that got a mention was the closing of the Museum of Art for a makeover. The museum closed its doors in August, and won’t be open again for three years, but keep your eyes open and you might spot a mini version of it moving around on four wheels.
The Gutai group, founded in 1954, by Jiro Yoshihara, is known as Japan’s first radical post-war artistic group. “To today’s consciousness,” their manifesto said, “the art of the past, which on the whole presents an alluring appearance, seems fraudulent. Let’s bid farewell to the hoaxes piled up on the altars and in the palaces, the drawing rooms and the antique shops.” The group rejected traditional art and were often multimedia artists, working with live performance, music, theatre and site-specific installations. An exhibition at the Parkview Art Hong Kong gallery gives Hong Kong art lovers a chance to take a look at some of their work “in which an intense cry accompanies the discovery of the new life of matter.”
And if that doesn’t leave you absolutely gobsmacked, maybe our studio guests will. They are a seven-member a cappella group from England, who made their debut at the Edinburgh Festival just last year, and who call themselves, yes, “Gobsmacked!”. Not so long ago, the seven-member a cappella group Gobsmacked! made their debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Combining voices and beatboxing, the group interprets both classic and contemporary songs. They’re here to give us a taste.

The issue of global security was thrown back into the spotlight recently in light of the terror attacks that shook Paris. In times such as this, regional stability is of greater importance especially in areas with dynamic changes such as Northeast Asia. This is why Korea, China, and Japan are looking for new ways of cooperation in the face of mounting challenges.
This week, we sit down with Ambassador Shin Bong-kil, the President of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) to look at some of the core issues at hand and what role Korea should play.

During the meeting′s first session,... President Park Geun-hye revealed her plan to support annual joint investment,.... by the international community for Northeast Asia,.... worth 63 billion U.S. dollars.

President Park also spoke about her initiative,.... to create a Northeast Asian Development Bank,.... a proposal she had previously made to individual countries,... but not at a multilateral event until now.

Date: 2011-05-28 in the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity 2011
The nuclear profiles of countries in East Asia are diverse. There are countries in East Asian countries with up-to-date nuclear technology, a country with a strong desire for nuclear weapons, and a country keeping up their nuclear technology against another country’s possession of nuclear weapons. East Asian countries have kept focusing on nuclear technology for their own security and economic development. North Korea has asserted their nuclear development program is for national security, and they cannot give up the technology. Northeast Asia without a multilateral security system must now seriously take proper steps for nuclear non-proliferation. This session will mainly discuss the non-proliferation issue.

The 4th Forum proceeded in the form of "forums in forum," with two special sessions: Special Session I on "From Helsinki to Jeju: Designing the Jeju Process for a Multilateral Cooperation Mechanism in Northeast Asia," and Special Session II on "IT Cooperation in East Asia." This reflects the organizer's keen awareness of the need for case examination of the correlation between formation of a Northeast Asian security/economic community and IT(information technology) that brings about Significant change in international relations as well as in political, security, and economic processes at the domestic level.
The 4th Forum explored the European experience in political, security and economic fields and apply them to the problems of peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia. Throughout this forum, with key issues including the 'cooperative framework in Northeast Asia' in mind, the European experience during the Cold War and in the post-Cold War era was addressed, such as CSCE/OSCE (Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe / Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe), German reunification, and the EU economic and political integration. An attempt was made to document the applicable ideas or framework for peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia, and to examine its usefulness for accelerating the process of institutionalizing regional peace and common prosperity.

October 28, 2015 - South Korea's geopolitical position dictates maintaining a strong alliance with the U.S. while exploring a harmonious partnership with China to protect and pursue its national interests. Preventing excessive conflicts between China and Japan also serves the interests of South Korea in terms of preserving peace and stability in Northeast Asia. President Park Geun-hye has visited Beijing recently to attend a historic ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of Word War II, while proposing to resume the triangular summit diplomacy among Korea, China, and Japan. President Park’s visit to Washington. D.C. aims at issues of mutual concern, including the denuclearization of North Korea. On the Korean Peninsula, she is pursuing a trust-building process with North Korea to achieve the goal of peaceful national unification despite North Korea's unpredictable brinkmanship. How does the U.S. policy of rebalance to Asia work to promote peace and stability in Korea and the region? What was achieved in the summit meeting between President Park and President Obama? Will China play a more active role to dissuade North Korea from its dangerous course of action? What are the impacts of Japan's foreign and security policy under the Abe government on the regional strategic environment?

Top diplomatic envoys and scholars are in Seoul... to discuss concrete measures for President Park Geun-hye′s Northeast Asia Initiative.
Song Ji-sun has more on the meeting on promoting regional cooperation through discussions on issues such as security and historical conflicts.
The ″Asia Paradox.″
The term is used to describe the skittish political and security cooperation among Northeast Asian countries... despite their economies becoming more and more interrelated.
These types of adverse relations are why President Park Geun-hye has proposed the Northeast Asia initiative to build trust and synergy among countries in the region.
It′s a move that the international community supports.
″The United States believes that reinforcing a rules-based order is a critical puzzle piece for a more peaceful and prosperous region. By adhering to international rules and norms we act and agree predictable that preserve stable status quo in the region, mitigate security risks and enhance all of our diplomatic autonomy.″
A major regional goal is curbing Pyongyang′s nuclear ambitions, but as attempts to restart dialogue with the North have failed... Russia called for greater cooperation in resolving regional issues first.
″We believe that solution of nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula is only possible in the broad framework of general improvement of situation in Northeast Asia... And these processes should be multilateral and reciprocal, should be oriented to long-term strategic prospect.″
Beijing also stressed the need for economic integration, pointing out that sustainable security can only be supported by sustainable development.
″We need to enhance microeconomic coordination, expand trade and investment, promote trade liberalization and facilitation both bilaterally and regionally by taking forward relevant FTA negotiations.″
The three-day forum continues with plenary sessions on energy, cyber space and disaster management... and governmental talks set for Wednesday.
Song Ji-sun, Arirang News.

Korea is the world′s fifth-largest nuclear energy powerhouse,... and its becoming increasingly dependent on atomic energy.
But that has also raised safety concerns,... with growing calls for greater cooperation on the regional front.
Kwon Soa turn to viewpoints of ordinary citizens as well as experts in the field.
How do Koreans feel about nuclear energy, and the safety of the country′s reactors?
″Nothing has happened so far. I feel safe.″
″I′m not that interested in the issue. I believe the country deals with it safely.″
″I feel a bit uneasy. I′ve read about the frequent malfunctions at nuclear reactors in a lot of articles.″
″I′m worried because of the accident in Japan. Korea has enough nuclear reactors. and I don′t think we need more.″
The public is divided,... but what can′t be denied is that Korea is the fifth-largest nuclear energy powerhouse in the world, and the country has more nuclear power plants in the works.
The same goes for China.
″The International Atomic Energy Agency predicts that the number of nuclear reactors in the world will have expanded by 60 percent by 2040, compared to 2013.″
While Japan shut down all but one of its reactors after the Fukushima disaster and many Western countries are shuttering plants as well,... the demand for nuclear energy in Northeast Asia is growing,... largely for economic and environmental reasons.
That was the point emphasized at the International Forum on Northeast Asia Nuclear Safety Cooperation on Thursday,... but also...
″More and more, we need to push for better strengthening our international cooperation.″
″Accidents can happen. But the correct prevention and response to nuclear accidents is so critical that experts say... simply sharing information on safety regulations is not enough. There has to be intervention too.″
A good example of this kind of intervention is how European countries began monitoring each other′s nuclear plants after the Fukushima disaster.
″Considering the geographical proximity of Korea, China and Japan,... I think we should raise safety levels to a place where each country is confident about the others.″
And that′s what experts from the three countries are aiming for,... saying there are no borders when it comes to nuclear safety.
Kwon Soa, Arirang News.

The president of the World Bank Group says he will back the establishment of a new asian development bank led by the South Korean government, when the two Koreas resolve their mutual security and political issues.
Jim Yong Kim who is in Peru made the statement during talks with Seoul′s Finance Minister Choi Kyung-hwan, on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting being held in Lima this week.
Noting that he comes from a separated family from the Korean War, the World Bank chief showed interest in the envisioned Northeast Asia Development Bank.
Minister Choi said the bank would be designed to support North Korea′s economic development in exchange for Pyongyang′s denuclearization, with the help of other member nations from the so-called six-party nuclear talks.
