Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (15 October 1844 – 25 August 1900) was a German philologist, philosopher, cultural critic, poet and composer. He wrote several critical texts on religion, morality, contemporary culture, philosophy and science, displaying a fondness for metaphor, irony and aphorism.
Nietzsche's key ideas include perspectivism, the Will to Power, the "death of God", the Übermensch and eternal recurrence. One of the key tenets of his philosophy is the concept of "life-affirmation," which embraces the realities of the world in which we live over the idea of a world beyond. It further champions the creative powers of the individual to strive beyond social, cultural, and moral contexts. Nietzsche's attitude towards religion and morality was marked with atheism, psychologism and historism; he considered them to be human creations loaded with the error of confusing cause and effect. His radical questioning of the value and objectivity of truth has been the focus of extensive commentary, and his influence remains substantial, particularly in the continental philosophical schools of existentialism, postmodernism, and post-structuralism. His ideas of individual overcoming and transcendence beyond structure and context have had a profound impact on late-twentieth and early-twenty-first century thinkers, who have used these concepts as points of departure in the development of their philosophies. Most recently, Nietzsche's reflections have been received in various philosophical approaches that move beyond humanism, e.g., transhumanism.
Nietzsche began his career as a classical philologist—a scholar of Greek and Roman textual criticism—before turning to philosophy. In 1869, at age twenty-four, he was appointed to the Chair of Classical Philology at the University of Basel, the youngest individual to have held this position. He resigned in the summer of 1879 due to health problems that plagued him most of his life.[9] In 1889, at age forty-four, he suffered a collapse and a complete loss of his mental faculties. The breakdown was later ascribed to atypical general paresis due to tertiary syphilis, but this diagnosis has come into question.[10] Re-examination of Nietzsche's medical evaluation papers show that he almost certainly died of brain cancer.[11] Nietzsche lived his remaining years in the care of his mother until her death in 1897, after which he fell under the care of his sister Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche until his death in 1900.
As his caretaker, his sister assumed the roles of curator and editor of Nietzsche's manuscripts. Förster-Nietzsche was married to a prominent German nationalist and antisemite, Bernhard Förster, and reworked Nietzsche's unpublished writings to fit her own ideology, often in ways contrary to Nietzsche's stated opinions, which were strongly and explicitly opposed to antisemitism and nationalism (see Nietzsche's criticism of antisemitism and nationalism). Through Förster-Nietzsche's editions, Nietzsche's name became associated with German militarism and Nazism, although later twentieth-century scholars have counteracted this conception of his ideas.
A decade after World War II, there was a revival of Nietzsche's philosophical writings thanks to exhaustive translations and analyses by Walter Kaufmann and R.J. Hollingdale. Others, well known philosophers in their own right, wrote commentaries on Nietzsche's philosophy, including Martin Heidegger, who produced a four-volume study and Lev Shestov who wrote a book called Dostoyevski, Tolstoy and Nietzsche where he portrays Nietzsche and Dostoyevski as the "thinkers of tragedy".[235] Georg Simmel compares Nietzsche's importance to ethics to that of Copernicus for cosmology.[236] Sociologist Ferdinand Tönnies read Nietzsche avidly from his early life, and later frequently discussed many of his concepts in his own works. Nietzsche has influenced philosophers such as Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre,[237] Oswald Spengler,[238] George Grant,[239] Emil Cioran,[240] Albert Camus, Ayn Rand,[241] Jacques Derrida, Leo Strauss,[242] Max Scheler, Michel Foucault and Bernard Williams. Camus described Nietzsche as "the only artist to have derived the extreme consequences of an aesthetics of the absurd".[243] Paul Ricœur called Nietzsche one of the masters of the "school of suspicion", alongside Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud.[244] Carl Jung was also influenced by Nietzsche.[245] In Memories, Dreams, Reflections, a biography transcribed by his secretary, he cites Nietzsche as a large influence.

Nietzsche: On the Advantage and Disadvantage of History for Life
Is knowledge good? Is knowledge bad? In what ways can history help us live and become stronger people? And what is it with Nietzsche's mustache anyways ?(we don't ever answer that question about facial hair...but we answer many others in this video about Friedrich Nietzsche's book "On the Advantage and Disadvantage of History for Life")

25 Historical Figures We Wish Were Still Alive

Even though every single man and woman on our list is dead, their ideas and works continue to shape and influence our world. Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche 15 October 1844 – 25 August 1900) was a German philosopher, cultural critic, poet, composer, and Latin and Greek scholar. He wrote several critical texts on religion, morality, contemporary culture, philosophy, and science, displaying a fondness for metaphor and irony.
Nietzsche's key ideas include perspectivism, the will to power, master-slave morality, the death of God, the Übermensch and eternal recurrence. One of the key tenets of his philosophy is "life-affirmation", which embraces the realities of the world in which we live over the idea of a world beyond. It further champions the creative powers of the individual to strive beyond social, cultural, and moral contexts.[Nietzsche's attitude towards religion and morality was marked with atheism, psychologism and historism: he considered them to be human creations – effects of a historical development, mistaken as its first cause. His radical questioning of the value and objectivity of truth has been the focus of extensive commentary, and his influence remains substantial, especially in schools of continental philosophy such as existentialism, postmodernism, and post-structuralism. His ideas of individual overcoming and transcendence beyond structure and context have had a profound impact on late-twentieth and early-twenty-first century thinkers, who have used these concepts as points of departure in the development of their philosophies.

In a continuous history of thousands of years there have been billions of people who “visited” our planet but very few who managed to leave their mark. Even though every single man and woman on our list is dead, their ideas and works continue to shape and influence our world. If they’re influence can be felt in death, can you imagine what they would do in life? What do you think? If you had a chance to bring any influential historical figure back to life, who would you pick? Could it be one of these 25 Historical Figures?

There’s no better way to sound smart than by dropping a perfectly timed quote from some well-respected literature. It shows that you’re both well-read and possess the stunning intellect to memorize whole chunks of books in the off chance that you might need it at some point (and barely anyone ever considers the implication that you just have way too much free time).

What Great Philosophers Can Teach Us About How to Live: Alain de Botton (2000)
In Consolations, de Botton attempts to console the reader through everyday problems (or at least help them to understand them) by extensively quoting and interpreting a number of philosophers. These are categorised in a number of chapters with one philosopher used in each.

Friedrich Nietzsche's VEREINSAMT - An Interpretation
Poetry is more than just words.
Let sight and sound carry you through our interpretation of one of Friedrich Nietzsche's darkest pieces. It was written in 1884, shortly before the greatest philosopher of his time (and arguably of all times) began his descent into madness - estranged from family and friends, alone, even at the height of his fame and craft, never to recover. Was he talking about hi

In Consolations, de Botton attempts to console the reader through everyday problems (or at least help them to understand them) by extensively quoting and interpreting a number of philosophers. These are categorised in a number of chapters with one philosopher used in each.
Consolation for Unpopularity (Socrates)
Consolation for Not Having Enough Money (Epicurus)
Consolation for Frustration (Seneca)
Consolation for Inadequacy (Montaigne)
Consolation for a Broken Heart (Schopenhauer)
Consolation for Difficulties (Nietzsche)
The critical reception for Consolations has been primarily positive. It received glowing praise in, among other publications, The New York Review of Books, The Times, The Spectator, The Sunday Telegraph, The Sunday Times, The Irish Times, The Literary Review, and The Mail on Sunday.[1]
A few critics have been negative. Edward Skidelsky of the New Statesman wrote: "Comforting, but meaningless. In seeking to popularise philosophy, Alain de Botton has merely trivialised it, smoothing the discipline into a series of silly sound bites. ... [De Botton's The Consolations of Philosophy] is bad because the conception of philosophy that it promotes is a decadent one, and can only mislead readers as to the true nature of the discipline."[2]
Jonathan Lear, writing in the New York Times said: "Academic philosophy in the United States has virtually abandoned the attempt to speak to the culture at large, but philosophy professors are doing something of incredible importance: they are trying to get things right. That is the thread that connects them back to Socrates -- even if they are not willing to follow him into the marketplace -- and that is the thread that The Consolations of Philosophy cuts. ...[L]et's face it, this isn't philosophy."[3]
Mary Margaret McCabe stated in the Times Literary Supplement: "In the culture of the market economy, we miss the fact that philosophy is valuable in and by itself.... It is deeply dispiriting, then, that the latest attempt to popularize philosophy [De Botton's The Consolations of Philosophy] - that is to say, to make philosophy into televisual fodder - does so precisely on the basis that philosophers can provide us with useful tips.... This is not the dumbing down of philosophy, it is a dumbing out. Nothing in this travesty deserves its title; Boethius must be turning in his grave."
The book was the inspiration for the Channel 4 TV series Philosophy: A Guide To Happiness. The series was produced mirroring the book's layout with the following six episodes:
Socrates on Self-Confidence
Epicurus on Happiness
Seneca on Anger
Montaigne on Self-Esteem
Schopenhauer on Love
Nietzsche on Hardship

Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (/mɒnˈteɪn/;[3] French: [miʃɛl ekɛm də mɔ̃tɛɲ]; 28 February 1533 – 13 September 1592) was one of the most influential philosophers of the French Renaissance, known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre. He became famous for his effortless ability to merge serious intellectual exercises with casual anecdotes[4] and autobiography—and his massive volume Essais (translated literally as "Attempts" or "Trials") contains, to this day, some of the most influential essays ever written. Montaigne had a direct influence on writers all over the world, including René Descartes,[5] Blaise Pascal, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Albert Hirschman, William Hazlitt,[6] Ralph Waldo Emerson, Friedrich Nietzsche, Stefan Zweig, Eric Hoffer,[7] Isaac Asimov, and possibly on the later works of William Shakespeare.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_de_Montaigne
Arthur Schopenhauer (German: [ˈaʁtʊʁ ˈʃɔpənˌhaʊ̯ɐ]; 22 February 1788 – 21 September 1860) was a German philosopher best known for his book, The World as Will and Representation (German: Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung), in which he claimed that our world is driven by a continually dissatisfied will, continually seeking satisfaction. Influenced by Eastern philosophy, he maintained that the "truth was recognized by the sages of India";[2] consequently, his solutions to suffering were similar to those of Vedantic and Buddhist thinkers (e.g., asceticism). The influence of "transcendental ideality"[3] led him to choose atheism.[4][5][6][7]
At age 25, he published his doctoral dissertation, On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason, which examined the four distinct aspects[8] of experience in the phenomenal world; consequently, he has been influential in the history of phenomenology. He has influenced many thinkers, including Friedrich Nietzsche,[9] Richard Wagner, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Erwin Schrödinger, Albert Einstein,[10] Sigmund Freud, Otto Rank, Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, Leo Tolstoy, Thomas Mann, and Jorge Luis Borges, among others.

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Schopenhauer

Poetry is more than just words.
Let sight and sound carry you through our interpretation of one of Friedrich Nietzsche's darkest pieces. It was written in 1884, shortly before the greatest philosopher of his time (and arguably of all times) began his descent into madness - estranged from family and friends, alone, even at the height of his fame and craft, never to recover. Was he talking about himself, about Goethe's Faust (as scholars have suggested) or about the fear and tragedy inside each one of us when we contemplate the possibility of having made a life-defining mistake?

Actor: Hans-Maria Darnov
Narrator: Ekkehardt Belle
Director & Editor: Simon Reichel
Director of Photography: Marco Fumolo
Original Score: Benjamin Bury
Sound Production: Felix Hofer
Sound Mastering: Felix Hofer, Daniel Bury

Friedrich Nietzsche: Vereinsamt (1887) - Translation: S. Reichel
Screams of the crow,
Not long, off to the town they will have flown:
Soon comes the snow, -
A bliss to have somewhere to call – a home!
Frozen you stand
Watching the past, alas! It’s been so long!
You fool, you ran
And fled the hearth with winter looming on.
The world – you’re tossed
Into a thousand deserts still and spent.
He who has lost
What you have lost, will find no end.
Stand pale and doomed,
Ever to wander winter’s ice
Like smoke and fumes
that always seek the colder skies
Fly, bird, and croak
Your song to desert’s silent cheer! -
You fool, and cloak
Your bleeding heart in frost and sneer
Screams of the crow,
Not long, off to the town they will have flown:
Soon comes the snow, -
A curse to have nowhere to call a home.

Watching the past, alas! It’s been so long!
You fool, you ran
And fled the hearth with winter looming on.
The world – you’re tossed
Into a thousand deserts still and spent.
He who has lost
What you have lost, will find no end.
Stand pale and doomed,
Ever to wander winter’s ice
Like smoke and fumes
that always seek the colder skies
Fly, bird, and croak
Your song to desert’s silent cheer! -
You fool, and cloak
Your bleeding heart in frost and sneer
Screams of the crow,
Not long, off to the town they will have flown:
Soon comes the snow, -
A curse to have nowhere to call a home.

Rand was born Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum (Russian: Али́са Зиновьевна Розенбаум) on February 2, 1905, to a Russian Jewish bourgeois family living in Saint Petersburg. She was the eldest of the three daughters of Zinovy Zakharovich Rosenbaum and his wife, Anna Borisovna (née Kaplan), largely non-observant Jews. Zinovy Rosenbaum was a successful pharmacist and businessman, eventually owning a pharmacy and the building in which it was located. With a passion for the liberal arts, Rand found school unchallenging, and said she began writing screenplays at the age of eight and novels at the age of ten. At the prestigious Stoiunina Gymnasium, her closest friend was Vladimir Nabokov's younger sister, Olga. The two girls shared an intense interest in politics, and would engage in debates: while Olga Nabokov defended constitutional monarchy, Alisa always supported republican ideals.[14][15] She was twelve at the time of the February Revolution of 1917, during which she favored Alexander Kerensky over Tsar Nicholas II.
The subsequent October Revolution and the rule of the Bolsheviks under Vladimir Lenin disrupted the comfortable life the family had previously enjoyed. Her father's business was confiscated and the family displaced. They fled to the Crimean Peninsula, which was initially under control of the White Army during the Russian Civil War. She later recalled that, while in high school, she determined that she was an atheist and that she valued reason above any other human virtue. After graduating from high school in the Crimea at 16, Rand returned with her family to Petrograd (as Saint Petersburg was renamed at that time), where they faced desperate conditions, on occasion nearly starving.[16][17]
After the Russian Revolution, universities were opened to women, allowing Rand to be in the first group of women to enroll at Petrograd State University,[18] where, at the age of only 16, she began her studies in the department of social pedagogy, majoring in history.[19] At the university she was introduced to the writings of Aristotle and Plato,[20] who would be her greatest influence and counter-influence, respectively.[21] A third figure whose philosophical works she studied heavily was Friedrich Nietzsche.[22] Able to read French, German and Russian, Rand also discovered the writers Fyodor Dostoevsky, Victor Hugo, Edmond Rostand, and Friedrich Schiller, who became her perennial favorites.[23]
Along with many other "bourgeois" students, Rand was purged from the university shortly before graduating. However, after complaints from a group of visiting foreign scientists, many of the purged students were allowed to complete their work and graduate,[24] which Rand did in October 1924.[25] She subsequently studied for a year at the State Technicum for Screen Arts in Leningrad. For one of her assignments, she wrote an essay about the Polish actress Pola Negri, which became her first published work.[26]
By this time she had decided her professional surname for writing would be Rand,[27] possibly as a Cyrillic contraction of her birth surname,[28] and she adopted the first name Ayn, either from a Finnish name or from the Hebrew word עין (ayin, meaning "eye").[29]
In the fall of 1925, Rand was granted a visa to visit American relatives. She departed on January 17, 1926.[30] When she arrived in New York City on February 19, 1926, she was so impressed with the skyline of Manhattan that she cried what she later called "tears of splendor".[31] Intent on staying in the United States to become a screenwriter, she lived for a few months with relatives in Chicago, one of whom owned a movie theater and allowed her to watch dozens of films for free. She then set out for Hollywood, California.[32]
Initially, Rand struggled in Hollywood and took odd jobs to pay her basic living expenses. A chance meeting with famed director Cecil B. DeMille led to a job as an extra in his film The King of Kings as well as subsequent work as a junior screenwriter.[33] While working on The King of Kings, she met an aspiring young actor, Frank O'Connor; the two were married on April 15, 1929. Rand became an American citizen in 1931. Taking various jobs during the 1930s to support her writing, she worked for a time as the head of the costume department at RKO Studios.[34] She made several attempts to bring her parents and sisters to the United States, but they were unable to acquire permission to emigrate.

Joshua Blakeney interviewed writer and philosopher Eugène Montsalvat on February 26, 2015. Blakeney was prompted to contact Eugène after stumbling across his thought-provoking article "The Necessity of Anti-Colonialism" on the website of Counter-Currents Publishing. One of the attractive features of most members of the New Right is their toleration for conflicting viewpoints within their movement. This is something that is increasingly foreign to the increasingly censorious Left who have assumed the role of enforcers of political correctness on behalf of those in power.
As a relatively new student of New Right thought, it struck Blakeney that one of the chief issues upon which there exists a plurality of viewpoints is Empire. Should European people be proud or ashamed of their Empires of yesteryear? To what extent did the European Empires differ from the globally dominant Zio-American Empire of today? These questions are addressed by Eugène in his masterful prose. Citing thinkers such as Julius Evola, Friedrich Nietzsche and Jean Thiriart he contends that "European colonialism began when the soul of Europe died."
Blakeney and Montsalvat discussed a variety of issues in the show, including:
- The roots of Euro-American Imperialism
- The legacy of post-Enlightenment Liberalism for European peoples
- Muslim-Christian/White-Arab-Persian alliances as the antidote to the Zionist "War on Terror"
- The problem of not situating domestic White-Muslim interactions within a geopolitical framework
- The problem of failing to acknowledge the existence of false-flag terrorism when discussing White-Muslim relations
- The Ukrainian "revolution" as top-down social change
- Ernst Niekisch and National Bolshevism
- The thought of Francis Parker Yockey, Jean Thiriart and Julius Evola and its implications for understanding the Muslim World
