The Kenya Navy celebrates a 50 year journey – 1964 to 2014 – from small beginnings as a part of the British Royal Navy to being the biggest Navy along the Eastern Coast of Africa, Cape to Cairo.
Kenya has 200 miles of territorial waters that are constantly threatened by pirates, drug and human traffickers, terrorists and now, even neighbouring countries coveting the undersea resources such as oil and gas that have been discovered in this area. It is the mission of the Kenya Navy to secure this sea territory.

As more and more parts of southern Somalia are captured by Kenyan Defence Forces, the looming fight for the strategic port of Kismayu draws even closer. The navy will be crucial in this fight, with a likely blockade of that port to starve the resources it draws from, and through that port. But how does a blockade work? NTV's John-Alan Namu spent time with part of the navy's small boat unit, patrolling the coast of Somalia to find out.

Kenya (
/ˈkɛnjə/ or /ˈkiːnjə/), officially the Republic of Kenya, is a country in East Africa that lies on the equator. With the Indian Ocean to its south-east, it is bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya has a land area of 580,000 km2 and a population of nearly 41 million, representing 42 different peoples and cultures. The country is named after Mount Kenya, a significant landmark and second among Africa's highest mountain peaks. Kenya's capital and largest city is Nairobi.
Kenya has a warm and humid climate along its coastline on the Indian Ocean which changes to wildlife-rich savannah grasslands moving inland towards the capital Nairobi. Nairobi has a cool climate that gets colder approaching Mount Kenya, which has three permanently snow-capped peaks. The warm and humid tropical climate reappears further inland towards lake Victoria, before giving way to temperate forested and hilly areas in the western region. The North Eastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes. Lake Victoria, the world's second largest fresh-water lake (after Lake Superior in the US and Canada) and the world's largest tropical lake, is situated to the southwest and is shared with Uganda and Tanzania. Kenya is famous for its safaris and diverse world-famous wildlife reserves such as Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park.

The Kenya Navy celebrates a 50 year journey – 1964 to 2014 – from small beginnings as a part of the British Royal Navy to being the biggest Navy along the Eastern Coast of Africa, Cape to Cairo. Kenya has 200 miles of territorial waters that are constantly threatened by pirates, drug and human traffickers, terrorists and now, even neighbouring countries coveting the undersea resources such as oil and gas that have been discovered in this area. It is the mission of the Kenya Navy to secure this sea territory. -

The Kenya Navy marked 50 years of existence on Monday, with pomp and color, treating guests present to a fete showcasing their various tools of trade, employed on the high seas to secure the country’s territorial integrity. The Jubilee celebrations took place at the Mtongwe camp in Mombasa. their commander in chief, President Uhuru Kenyatta, hailed the men and women in the navy who have either mounted or participated in various operations to protect the country, most notably in the capture of the port of Kismayu, and the recent seizure and destruction of drug vessels on the high seas. -

A middle aged woman serving in the navy died in Mombasa early today after the car she lost control of a car she was driving and plunged into the Indian Ocean. She was reportedly driving to work when the accident occurred along the Makupa causeway. -

The Kenya Navy marked 50 years of existence on Monday, with pomp and color, treating guests present to a fete showcasing their various tools of trade, employed on the high seas to secure the country’s territorial integrity. The Jubilee celebrations took place at the Mtongwe camp in Mombasa. their commander in chief, President Uhuru Kenyatta, hailed the men and women in the navy who have either mounted or participated in various operations to protect the country, most notably in the capture of the port of Kismayu, and the recent seizure and destruction of drug vessels on the high seas.

Jonny here, right now I am at Borana Ranch, high on the Laikipia Plateau, in the lee of Mount Kenya. And in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kenya.
If I asked what's the first thing you think about when turning your mind to travel in this colourful East African country, you'd almost certainly say wildlife. And of course you'd be right as over 80 percent of holidays here will have a wildlife element.
From the Marsabit National Park in the north, to the Masai Mara and Amboseli National Parks in the south, the planes of Kenya are teeming with wildlife or all shapes and sizes offering, along with its neighbour Tanzania, the best place in the world to view game. And if you throw in Mount Kenya and the Aberdares, the Laikipia Plateau and the Matthews Range, the Lamu Archipelago and the rest of the Kenyan coast, and some of the most spectacular and evocative accommodation anywhere on earth, then here in Kenya you have a true world class travel experience.
The Masai Mara is probably the most famous national park. Covering more than 500sqm, the Mara is universally renowned for its exceptional populations of lion, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo and giraffe and for the famous migration of wildebeest that takes place every year from July to October.
But the Masai Mara is by no means the only show in town. Further to the east you have Amboseli National Park with its epic views of Kilimanjaro, to the north you have Samburu, Marsabit and Meru National Parks, and here on Laikipia, in the Lewa conservancy, where the savannah is awash with elephants, giraffe, the quirky Grevy zebra and a new and burgeoning population of black rhino.
And as for the accommodation, well that is quite simply out of this world. Yes, to get the best you're going to pay, but in our opinion the experience you'll enjoy and quality of service you'll receive -- plus of course the game you'll see -- does make this value for money. There is simply nothing else like it on earth. Among many amazing places to stay, my personal favourites are Else's Kopje in Meru, Saruni in Samburu, Richard's Camp or Serian in the Mara, and either Sabuk or Borana here on the Laikipia Plateau.
But tourism in Kenya is not only about wild animals. The Kenyan Coast, stretching all the way from Diani Beach in the south the Lamu archipelago in the north, with its white sand beaches and gentle turquoise seas -- particularly when the trade winds are blowing in the right direction from November through to March -- again coupled with some fabulous accommodation, combine to make this a truly world class beach experience.
And if you like to meet the people -- an important factor in most Wild Frontiers adventures -- there are plenty of opportunities, particularly at Sarara, in the Matthews Range, at Il Ngwesi north or Mount Kenya and here at Borana.
To get around there is are great quality land cruisers, a brilliant air service, either in scheduled flights or on private charters, a classic bi-plane, or if you really want to push the boat out and get to places few others can reach, a truly amazing helicopter service, run by our friends at Tropic Air.
A classic African safari is a travel experience like no other, and one that all travellers should do at least once in their lives. And for that, in my opinion, there's nowhere better than Kenya.

A classic African safari is a travel experience like no other, and one that all travellers should do at least once in their lives. And for that, in my opinion, there's nowhere better than Kenya.

STORYLINE:
On January 29th an official said that the breakaway Somali region of Puntland had agreed to a French request that it take custody of nine suspected pirates arrested by France.
The men had reportedly been arrested by the French.
"We consider them to be a real threat for the regional security and the world as well. Therefore we facilitated and received nine pirates they extradited," said Abdullahi Said Samatar, the Puntland security minister.
Somali waters are now patrolled by more than a dozen warships from countries including Britain, France, Germany, Iran and the United States.
China and South Korea have also ordered warships sent to the region to protect their vessels and crews from pirates.
Somali pirates hijacked a German tanker loaded with liquefied petroleum gas on Thursday off the Horn of Africa.

Piracy has taken an increasing toll on international shipping, especially in the Gulf of Aden, which links the Mediterranean Sea and the Suez Canal with the Indian Ocean.

On February 5th Somali pirates said that they were freeing a Ukrainian ship carrying tanks and other heavy weapons after receiving a 3.2 (m) million US dollar ransom.
The US Navy said it was watching the pirates leaving the ship.
The MV Faina was seized by bandits in September in one of the most brazen acts in a surge of attacks on shipping off the Somali coast.
Vessels from the US Navy's 5th Fleet surrounded it after it was seized to make sure the cargo did not get into the hands of Somali insurgent groups linked to al-Qaida.
In February US Navy teams capable of "visiting, boarding, searching and seizing" began using unmanned drones to combat the increasing problem of piracy in the waters off the lawless Somali coast.
American warships are now using the unmanned drones to hunt pirates threatening one of the world's most important shipping lanes.
Sailors aboard USS Mahan told The Associated Press they have been using the spy flights daily to spot potential pirate mother ships.
One VBSS team member aboard the US Mahan said that the teams also have the ability to "visit other vessels, just to show off security around the fleet, or the area of operation we're in."
On February 12th, pictures taken by the drones, some of which also are equipped with night vision, helped apprehend nine pirates after a night flight relayed pictures of a skiff with a ladder onboard.
A skiff had fired a rocket- propelled grenade at a merchant vessel in the area earlier.

STORYLINE:
On January 29th an official said that the breakaway Somali region of Puntland had agreed to a French request that it take custody of nine suspected pirates arrested by France.
The men had reportedly been arrested by the French.
"We consider them to be a real threat for the regional security and the world as well. Therefore we facilitated and received nine pirates they extradited," said Abdullahi Said Samatar, the Puntland security minister.
Somali waters are now patrolled by more than a dozen warships from countries including Britain, France, Germany, Iran and the United States.
China and South Korea have also ordered warships sent to the region to protect their vessels and crews from pirates.
Somali pirates hijacked a German tanker loaded with liquefied petroleum gas on Thursday off the Horn of Africa.

STORYLINE
The flight deck of the USS Arleigh Burke, an American guided missile destroyer, was turned into a live firing range for Kenyan navy personnel on Wednesday.
The destroyer is on a seven month long US led training mission for the African Partnership Station (APS) in response to requests by African nations for military-to-military or civilian-military maritime training.
Kenyan Navy personnel were given assault rifle training on the destroyer, which is en route to the Seychelles after visiting Kenya's main port Mombasa.
APS is an international initiative in Africa aimed at improving maritime safety and security which involves the US Navy, the US Coast Guard and interagency members, plus European allies.
Somalia, which neighbours Kenya, has long been a lawless, war-torn country, and the waters off its coast are now the world's worst piracy hotspot.
There have been dozens of ship hijackings by Somali pirates disrupting shipping in the busy Gulf of Aden.
NATO now has five warships on anti-piracy patrol and similar operations are being carried out by the European Union and nations including the United States, China, Russia and India.

A French naval frigate docked on Wednesday in Mombasa to hand over 11 suspected pirates to Kenyan authorities for trial over their alleged attack on a Liberian cargo ship last week.
The Nivose captured the suspects in France's ninth military operation against suspected pirates in the Gulf of Aden, through which some 20,000 ships pass each year.
Following an agreement between Kenya and the European Union, the 11 suspects were to be tried in a Kenyan court for their alleged attempt to hijack the Safmarine Asia cargo ship, French officials said.
Other piracy suspects who allegedly attacked French citizens have been taken for trial to France, which traditionally has been aggressive in fighting piracy.
The Nivose, carrying a helicopter onboard, is serving in the international fleet trying to protect the gulf's trade route.
Two white skiffs - presumably belonging to the captured piracy suspects - were seen on its deck as it pulled in Wednesday to the port in Mombasa.
Somalia's nearly 20 years of lawlessness has fuelled piracy's rise. Attacks at sea nearly doubled worldwide in the first three months of 2009, according to an international maritime watchdog report on Tuesday.
