Recent DNA studies have porven that the majority of modern day Lebanese are not Arab but of Phoenician ancestry, especially those Lebanese of Maronite background. Although Lebanon is a mix of ethnic groups, it has been proven by DNA that the majority of them descend from a mix of Phoenician ancestry with a minority that is mixed with Western European ancestry especially French.
Recent DNA has proven that 30% of Lebanese tested had Phoenician roots/original with an additional 27% that proved to descend from Phoenicians after this documentary which rounds it to around 57% of Lebanese people in total. The rest of them descend from Armenians, Syriac peoples etc. If the Lebanese were Arab, they would look identical to those real Arabs from the Gulf who in majority do not share the same facial features and skin color as the Lebanese people.
The Phoenicians had a different culture and language from that of the Arabs. Due to the fact that Phoenicians were descendants of Canaanite people, their language, culture and facial features resembled more closely to that of the Jewish people of Israel (another people who descended from Canaanites). DNA on Lebanese people have also proven that they are more closely related to Jews, Syrians and Jordanians than to Saudi Gulf Arabs or Yemenis.

Its always disconcerting when you get off the airplane to be greeted by airport security asking your name. I'd just arrived in Beirut for the first time and was slightly concerned my trip was going to be spent in a jail cell when I realised my hotel had arranged for a personal escort to arrivals. Wondering which Hollywood celebrity I'd been mistaken for I enjoyed the moment as the immigration queue parted like the Red Sea and an incredible trip began...
To the uninitiated (or in fact those initiated by CNN) you'd be forgiven for thinking that Beirut was a rather troubled city, though anyone who reads the likes of Tatler and GQ will know it as an emerging force in the world of all things epicurean. Inspired by a love of Lebanese food I decided a 4 day trip was in order to carry out a gustatory reconnaissance mission and the starting point was traditional cuisine.
For an authentic insight into a country's cuisine a great place to start is the local farmer's market and the Souk el Tayeb in Beirut doesn't disappoint. I was fortunate enough to meet the organiser of the market Kamal Mouzawak and quickly realised that this market goes way beyond a simple amalgam of local produce. For Kamal the market is practically a socio-political statement that people from myriad different religious, political and idealistic backgrounds can be united through a common love of all things edible. Each week all sorts of lively characters travel from the four small corners of Lebanon to sell their wares and the sense of community around the stalls as old friends ran into each other was tangible. But let's talk food...
Lebanon has been a cultural melting pot for a long time owing in no small part to occupation by the Ottoman Turks and then later the French. Enlisting the help of Chef Malek from the prestigious Phoenicia hotel (it's amazing what doors ASW can open) my Lebanese food vocabulary (if not my pronunciation) quickly grew as we ploughed our way through the incredible mezze in the market. Battata Harra, Fatayer, Saj...you name it I ate it, such that by the time it came to cooking lunch I wasn't sure I could take much more. But in the name of ASW I did.
The thing I love about Lebanese people is the totally matter-of-fact way in which they explain to you that their cuisine is the best in the Middle East as if the point is not even up for discussion. Chef Malek is more accustomed to catering for the hundreds of people that walk through the doors of his restaurant Mosaic but he took time out to show me some of the basics.
This week we're going to cover a couple of simple dishes that many of you will be familiar with though not necessarily know how to make: Kibbeh and Fattoush. In my next installment of World Kitchen we're going to the opposite end of the scale as I check out one of Beirut's top chefs and we take an entirely modern look at local cusine. Yalla !

Lebanese people are not Arab, they are PHOENICIAN. This video shows the difference facial features and skin color between Lebanese people and the general look of Saudi Arabs and Yemenis from the Gulf.

Jacky Chamoun, the Lebanese Olympic skier at the centre of controversy over video footage of her posing topless in the snow, said on Saturday the material was "not supposed to be public."
Chamoun, who is currently participating in the Sochi Winter Olympics, told the Associated Press she never expected the three-year-old footage to be published, and was a bit shocked at the furore it had caused.
"My family was shocked and they informed me, with my friends, and we couldn't do anything to stop the spreading of the story; it went so fast," said Chamoun.
The footage of Chamoun posing topless in the snow for a photographer prompted a Lebanese government official to order an investigation.
The inference was that Chamoun had somehow harmed the country's reputation.
It was only after that decree that many people in Lebanon realised they had athletes competing at the Winter Games.
Supporters took to social media immediately to criticise politicians for targeting the young athlete while seemingly ignoring corruption, nepotism, bombings and a litany of other problems.
Within an hour, Chamoun's Facebook page had 12-thousand fans.
Lebanese people from as far away as Los Angeles and Sao Paolo posted semi-naked pictures of themselves, covered strategically with signs featuring messages like "Stripping For Jackie" and "I am not naked," on Twitter.
"Of course it was sad in the beginning, but when I see everyone, a movement cheering for me, it's good to feel better about it," she added.
In the Arab world, Lebanon is a relatively liberal country with sprawling beaches and mountain resorts. The capital Beirut is renowned for its bars, restaurants and night life.
But under the surface, most people, Christians and Muslims, tend to be deeply conservative.
"It doesn't surprise me that a few people can criticise this (the footage), because not all of us are educated the same way. Some of the people are conservative, we have to accept this, and even though they criticise, I completely understand this," said Chamoun.
Chamoun acknowledged on her Facebook page that she posed for an Austrian ski calendar, and never imagined that behind-the-scenes footage would ever be published.

Ufuoni Family, a band from Kenya, reflected through the song "Utumishi Kwa Wote" a state of poverty and unemployment, effects of government's abuse of power in public resources of the country. And in a Lebanese production, Zeid Hamdan presented an Egyptian Song, concerning reforms by the Egyptian Mariam Saleh. He speaks about how political corruption creates social havoc.
[Zeid Hamdan (Lebanese Musician)]
The poverty experienced by some people in Egypt pushed them towards working in smuggling prohibited narcotics or theft and this is the only solution they have.
[Narrator]
"Africa", is a Sudanese Colombian production song that talks about the wasted childhood rights, the suffering of refugees and the lost future of youth in Africa, the continent from which most competitors come.
The band ZEEM from Europe presented a French song called "I Think So," which tells the story of internal corruption, and specifically concerning the phenomenon of rampant theft in the municipality, the public departments and the waste of public money.
So far, several teams submitted their production to the international committee to select the 3 winners that will participate in the global forum on fighting corruption, where the establishment of an international social network will take place to continue working to fight corruption and prevent it.
The concerned associations have called youth in Beirut and in the world to check the website www.anticorruptionmusic.org and submit their music in order to spread awareness about the impact of corruption on the development in their country, hoping that music, which is the language of the spirit, will succeed in influencing the current generation through which numbers and reports have failed.

[Narrator]

Young people from different countries are required to provide a video clip related to the phenomena of corruption rampant in their countries in order to increase awareness and promote the principles of transparency and accountability.

The parents of a Lebanese Olympic skier depicted in revealing photographs and a video that circulated on the Internet criticised the negative reaction to the images on Friday.
Three years ago, Jacky Chamoun - one of two athletes currently representing Lebanon at the Winter Olympics in Sochi - posed for a calendar photo shoot, although the images have only just surfaced online.
"In the past few days there was a problem through images and a video distributed on the Internet," said Gabriele Chamoun, Jacky's father.
"The reaction of some media outlets, or one media outlet, was a negative reaction although it distributed these photographs, and people and other media outlets backed Jackie and freedom of opinion. She also got huge support on social media," he added.
Denise Chahab, Jacky's mother, said the reaction to the photographs in some instances has been "regrettable".
"The East aims to bring down successful people while the West promotes them. Sometimes you see they want to promote unsuccessful people, while here when there is a successful person they want to bring that person down. I see that as harm," she added.
On the streets of the Lebanese capital Beirut, people were divided over Chamoun's behaviour.
Lebanon's sports and youth minister reportedly ordered an investigation after the images appeared online.
The 22-year-old Chamoun is scheduled to race in the slalom on February 21.
She said the footage that found its way onto the Internet was never supposed to surface.

Norman Finkelstein, a Jewish American political scientist and author, specializing in Jewish-related issues and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in particular talks about the Lebanese militia Hezbollah and openly supports and praises their resistance: "They (Hezbollah) show courage, they show discipline, I respect that"
On Israeli defeat and consequential withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, Finkelstein says:"But the reality was -- and everyone understood it -- that the Israeli attitude was: We are going to knock out Hizbullah. They began planning for a new war right after they were forced to leave in 2000. They found their excuse, their pretext, in July 2006, but there is no question among rational people that Israel was never going to let the Hizbullah victory go by."
"There is no way that the United States and Israel are going to tolerate any resistance (to their hegemony) in the Arab world."
On the damage caused to Lebanon as a result of the resistance: "It's better to die on your feet than to walk crawling on your knees....how can I not respect those (Hezbollah) who say they would rather die on their feet? How can I not respect that?"
Finkelstein then goes on to slam the stances taken by some sell out Arabs who continue to admire George Bush like 'Servants' despite Bush being the man behind the carpet bombing of Lebanon and says that Bush should be classified as 'persona non grata':"Who (would) roll out the red carpet less than two years after your whole country was destroyed by them (the US)? "
"You (sell out-arabs) have NO self respect"

Things You Didn't Know About Katy Perry►►http://bit.ly/1gQTIvW
Clevver's bringing you ocho facts about Shakira that you can trust are legit LOCO cause' we and especially our hips don't lie. Number 1, Shaki is sneaky. After she wrapped her tour in 2005, Shakira secretly attended a college course at UCLA in Los Angeles, ninja style, in full disguise. The global megastar wanted to take a summer history class. In order to keep her identity under wraps (get it?) she dressed like a dude and told people her name was Isabel. Let's be real, even in boy clothes, Shakira probably still looked like a goddess. Como se llama, bonita!
Speaking of hitting the books, it makes sense now... Coming in at number 2, Shakira is not only a beauty, but brains as well. In fact she's pretty much Einstein status with a reported IQ of 140, Einstein was about 160. May I remind you that the average IQ is 100! Shakira is a genius. Stay in school kids!
But don't be like this at school... Number 3, when Shaki was young, she was rejected from joining choir because her music teacher thought she sounded like a goat. Who's laughin' now music teacher? Being the humble person that she is, Shakira has said she actually agrees with the ongoing goat comparison, "I did have a voice a bit like a goat but my dad told me to never give up and to keep going and it paid off." Darn Skippy it did. If Shakira sounds like a goat, you must sound like asses.
Moving on to number 4! We all know Shakira can work it on the dance floor with her killer Latin hip action, but it actually started with her Lebanese Grandmother who taught her to belly dance to pay homage to her middle Eastern roots. Did you know that Shakir can also do some street inspired pop and locking? Now that we think about it, the singer did give us a sexy taste of that in here. Werrrrk (snaps snaps) Speaking of sexy moves, apparently that's how Shakira snagged her boyfriend Gerard Pique.
Coming in at number 5, Shaki and her boo met when he appeared in her "Waka Waka" music video for the 2010 FIFA World Cup song. She is quite the she-cougar-wolf for catching this studly soccer player Gerard who is EXACTLY 10 years younger than her. Yes they share the same birthday of February 2nd.
Number 6! Speaking of people younger than her, did you know Shakira did a duet with Selena Gomez in 2010 on Wizards of Waverly Place?! I did. So apparently Shakira didn't shy away from the Disney channel but did turn down a MAJOR film role.
Coming in at number 7, Steven Spielberg offered Shaki a part in his now famous film, 'The Mask of Zorro' in 1998. She was going to play the lead role that ended up going to Catherine Zeta Jones because Shaki felt her English wasn't good enough. Ah Shakira that would have been a game changer! Plus, give yourself a break you're penta-lingual.
Bringing it home at number 8, Shakira can speak five languages or should I say, Ella puede hablar en cinco idiomas. Shakira is fluent in Spanish, English, French, Italian, and Portuguese. That's muy loco! It's like the United Nations is having a party in her mouth. That wraps our tasty Shakira fact frenzy. How many did you know? Tell us in the comments below. Speaking of sexy female felines—test your Katy Perry knowledge. Just click here! Seeeee our hips don't lie.

They're not going to be able to take out the weaponry of Hezbollah so all they're doing is massive destruction and I'm afraid to say that they've been waiting for that for a long time. So by destroying the national army they will make dissension between Lebanese and maybe they hope for divisions but it will never happen. Lebanese are all united and that's what makes the strength of Lebanon now."

STORYLINE:
Israel "is not going to reach its goal", the Lebanese President said in an interview with AP Television News in Beirut on Thursday.
"They're not going to be able to take out the weaponry of Hezbollah so all they're doing is massive destruction," Emile Lahoud said.
The Israeli land, sea and air bombing campaign began on July 12 after Hezbollah militants entered Israeli territory, captured two Israeli soldiers and killed three in the ensuing battle.
"I think they are taking revenge about the liberation of Lebanon 2000. At the same time, they don't want the prosperous Lebanese at its frontier," , Lahoud said.
"Lebanese are all united and that's what makes the strength of Lebanon now," he added.
Meanwhile, in failing to agree on a call for an immediate Middle-East cease-fire a senior Israeli Cabinet minister said the world had effectively given Israel permission to press ahead with its military offensive in Lebanon.
Justice Minister Haim Ramon, considered a confidant of Ehud Olmert, made the comments to army radio.
A high-level Middle-East conference in Rome on Wednesday ended without agreement.
Most European leaders want Israel to halt its offensive against Hezbollah guerrillas immediately, while the United States is willing to give Israel more time to attack the guerrilla group.
Although top international, European and US officials agreed in the conference that urgent action is needed to stop the killing of civilians in Lebanon, no joint statement calling for a cease-fire was issued.
The Israeli bombardment has failed to stop guerrilla rocket fire, despite killing hundreds of people in Lebanon, driving up to 750,000 people from their homes and causing billions of US dollars in damage.
51 Israelis have also died, according to the Israeli military.
