Jurisdiction (from the Latin ius, iuris meaning "law" and dicere meaning "to speak") is the practical authority granted to a formally constituted legal body or to a political leader to deal with and make pronouncements on legal matters and, by implication, to administer justice within a defined area of responsibility. The term is also used to denote the geographical area or subject-matter to which such authority applies.
Jurisdiction draws its substance from public international law, conflict of laws, constitutional law and the powers of the executive and legislative branches of government to allocate resources to best serve the needs of its native society.
International laws and treaties provide agreements which nations agree to be bound to.
Supranational organizations provide mechanisms whereby disputes between states may be resolved through arbitration or mediation. When a country is recognized as de jure, it is an acknowledgment by the other de jure nations that the country has sovereignty and the right to exist.

It was another good week regarding bogus traffic tickets; three tickets kicked out. These are all from the east coast, Maine, New York, and New Jersey. Each filed a motion to dismiss based on a lack of evidence proving the constitution and code apply and there was jurisdiction and no valid cause of action.
None of the accusers were able to provide a single fact proving the constitution and code apply and none of them even tried; though in Maine they did try scaring Scott into not going to trial.

This is the fourth in a series of videos recorded July 2015 as part of a review of Civil Procedure topics in preparation for the July 2015 MBE (Multistate Bar Examination).
This fourth video covers selected issues regarding personal jurisdiction (PJ). Topics covered include:
* PJ in federal versus state court
* In rem/quasi in rem versus in personam jurisdiction
* Traditional bases for PJ
* The modern "minimum contacts" approach
* Specific versus general jurisdiction
* Ways of showing purposeful availment
* What it means to "give rise" to a claim
* Reasonableness factors

Caveat to those taking the bar exam: This video and the other videos in this series are directed towards preparation for the MBE multiple-choice exam. Time constraints prevent me from discussing all potential Civil Procedure MBE topics or issues listed in the MBE outline that might arise on the bar exam, and these same constraints limit the depth of information I can provide. Contrary to what the Rolling Stones claim, time is not on our side.
Caveat to JD students: These videos focus on selected basics with an eye towards the bar exam. They stick to the basics and do not cover the law with the level of depth that I would expect from a JD student taking a professor-written examination.
