The name Robert is a Germanic given name, from Proto-Germanic *χrōþi- "fame" and *berχta- "bright". Compare Old Dutch Robrecht and Old High German Hrodebert (a compound of hruod "fame, glory" and berht "bright"). It is also in use as a surname.
After becoming widely used in Continental Europe it entered England in its Old French form Robert, where an Old English cognate form (Hrēodbēorht, Hrodberht, Hrēodbēorð, Hrœdbœrð, Hrœdberð) had existed before the Norman Conquest. The feminine version is Roberta. The Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish form is Roberto.
Similar to the name, Richard, "Robert" is also a common name in many Germanic languages, including English, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and Icelandic. It can be used as a French, Hungarian, Finnish, and Estonian name as well.
Robert, and also the name Joseph, were in the top 10 most given boys' names in the US for 47 years, from 1925 to 1972.
In Italy during the Second World War, the form of the name, Roberto, briefly acquired a new meaning derived from, and referring to the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis.

Commemorative video of Robert Harvey's 350th game of VFL/AFL football - Subiaco, Perth, June 2007. An unbelievable game of football over in Perth. Hard, tough, full of twists and turns - an epic in every sense of the word and a game that will live long in all our memories. For everything that Robert Harvey has given to our club, it really was a game we dared not lose and thankfully in the end it was a famous victory, one of St Kilda's most important in its history. Hopefully I captured the passion and emotion that was flowing through our boys that day, as well as the romance of Banger's 350th.

Anthony Appiah (Professor of Philosophy and Law, NYU), David Harvey (Professor of Anthropology and Geography, CUNY), and Michael Taussig (Professor of Anthropology, Columbia). David Harvey's lecture is entitled "Visualizing Capital". Marx defines capital as "value in motion." Is there a way to map and visualize how capital moves around within the totality of a capitalist mode of production? And in what ways does creating such a visualization help clarify what Marx was attempting to do in the three volumes of Capital t...

Livestream 2014-10-09 - David Harvey explains why a fundamental revision of the dominant Marx interpretation is necessary and what makes Capital a book that changed the course of history and, as Harvey suggests, may do so again. According to Harvey we should better read Marx instead of Piketty as he writes: “There is much that is valuable in Piketty’s data sets. But his explanation as to why the inequalities and oligarchic tendencies arise is seriously flawed. His proposals as to the remedies for the inequalities are naïve if not utopian. And he has certainly not produced a working model for capital of the twenty-first century. For that we still need Marx or his modern-day equivalent.” About David Harvey: David Harvey teaches at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and...
Later in the day, after driving into town with his two pet dogs and sending an emergency money order to one of his employees, Ruby walked to the nearby police headquarters, where he made his way to the basement via the Main Steet ramp. At 11:21 am CST — while authorities were escorting Oswald through the police basement to an armored car that was to take him to the nearby county jail — Ruby stepped out from a crowd of reporters and fired his .38 revolver into Oswald's abdomen, fatally wounding him. The shooting was broadcast live nationally, and millions of television viewers witnessed it. Author Norman Mailer, and others, have questioned why Ruby would have left his two beloved dogs in his car if he had planned on killing Oswald at police headquarters. The House Select Committee on Assas...
