Two days after the president of a prominent Christian university encouraged students to acquire concealed carry gun permits to “end those Muslims”, Hillary Clinton delivered a sharp rebuke against him.
After the FBI announced it was investigating the lethal attack in San Bernardino, California, as a terrorist incident, Jerry Falwell Jr, the school president, was speaking to students at Liberty University in Virginia after
Falwell said, “Let’s teach them a lesson if they ever show up here. I’ve always thought if more good people had concealed carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in.”
The Democratic Presidential nominee told ABC News on Sunday, that Falwell was aiding Islamic State militants with such comments.
She said, that this is the kind of deplorable – not only hateful response to a legitimate security issue, but it is giving aid and comfort to Isis and other radical jihadists.

Liberty University president, Jerry Falwell Jr., called for good people to have concealed carry permits to protect themselves from radical Islamic terrorist Muslims.
“If some of those people in that community center had had what I’ve got in my back pocket right now. I’ve always thought, if more good people had concealed carry permits then we could end those Muslims before they go out there and kill us. I just wanted to take this opportunity to encourage all of you to get your permit. We offer a free course. And let’s teach them a lesson if they ever show up here.”
Mr. Falwell told Sean Hannity that the Virginia Tech shooting in 2008 encouraged him to initiate a policy that allowed students and faculty to carry concealed.
“And I just remember eight years ago, just an hour-and-a-half from Liberty University, the terrible carnage at Virginia Tech. I remember thinking for years after that, what if just one of those students, one of those faculty members had had a concealed carry permit. What if they had been able to stop that shooter before he killed 30 plus lives? And I just determined after that incident to make sure that Liberty University students were prepared, were able to protect themselves, to have the chance to protect themselves. It’s not all students. It’s only age 21 and older, faculty and staff. So we don’t have a bunch of 18, 19 and 20-year-old students running around with handguns. But, it’s a policy that’s been in place here for several years and it’s worked well for us. And I’m proud that Liberty was one of the only schools to take that position initially. Now dozens have followed suit. And I think it’s common sense. It’s where all universities need to go.”
Do you agree with Liberty University’s policy that allows students and faculty to carry firearms on campus?

Considered one of the biggest and at the very least, best recognized modern-day crusaders of free speech and First Amendment rights, Larry Flynt is a character beyond description as you'll see from this court deposition taken from Federal prison prior to his first trial versus Falwell where he was already serving a 6 month sentence for desecration of the flag (wearing a diaper made out of the American flag).
During the deposition, you'll hear Flynt mention "the Captain" numerous times - who he is referring to is Captain Joe Sivley from the Bureau of Prisons where he was being housed.
You'll get a good idea of just what a handful Larry Flynt can be (when he's not amusing himself) as he goes toe to toe with the opposition in a judicial setting. It's quite entertaining to say the least...
Background:
Fundamentalist Protestant minister Jerry Falwell took offense at a satirical magazine advertisement inside of Flynt owned Hustler magazine printed in 1983 which happened to target him. In a parody of a magazine ad for a popular alcoholic drink at the time (Campari) in which Hustler described a drunk Falwell having an incestuous encounter with his mother in an outhouse.
The Hustler parody featured a picture of Falwell and an "interview" in which Falwell describes his first sexual experience "with Mom" in an outhouse while both were "drunk off our God-fearing asses on Campari". The ad went on to say that Falwell was drunk and that "Mom looked better than a Baptist whore with a $100 donation". It went on to say that Falwell decided to have sex with his mother since she had "showed all the other guys in town such a good time". And finally, when asked if he had tried Campari since, Falwell answered, "I always get sloshed before I go out to the pulpit. You don't think I could lay down all that bullshit sober, do you?"
Even though the ad carried a disclaimer which mentioned that it was an "ad parody and not to be taken seriously", Falwell sued Flynt and Hustler magazine for invasion of privacy, libel, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, and a jury found in favor of Flynt on the libel claim, but found in favor of Falwell on the intentional infliction of emotional distress charge, and awarded Falwell $150,000 in damages.
As you can imagine, Flynt appealed the decision but the Fourth Circuit Court later affirmed it. And after it declined to rehear the case, the U.S. Supreme Court granted Flynt's request to hear the case.
Finally in 1988, the United States Supreme Court held, in a unanimous 8-0 decision (Justice Kennedy took no part in the decision), held that the First Amendment's free-speech guarantee prohibits awarding damages to public figures to compensate for emotional distress intentionally inflicted upon them. As a result, Hustler magazine's parody of Jerry Falwell was deemed to be within the law, leading to a reversal of the jury verdict in favor of Falwell, who had previously been awarded $150,000 in damages by a lower court.

Larry Flynt Debates Jerry Falwell on Hustler Magazine: U.S. Supreme Court Case (1997)

Hustler Magazine, Inc. v. Falwell, 485 U.S. 46 (1988), was a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court held, in a unanimous 8--0 decision (Justice Anthony Kennedy took no part in the consideration or decision of the case), that the First Amendment's free-speech guarantee prohibits awarding damages to public figures to compensate for emotional distress intentionally inflicted upon them.
Thus, Hustler magazine's parody of Jerry Falwell was deemed to be within the law, because the Court found that reasonable people would not have interpreted the parody to contain factual claims, leading to a reversal of the jury verdict in favor of Falwell, who had previously been awarded $150,000 in damages by a lower court.
While Hustler magazine has always been known for its explicit pictures of nude women and for what many consider crude humor, the prominent fundamentalist Protestant minister Jerry Falwell objected to the parody ad the magazine printed in 1983 targeted at him, in which Falwell related having an incestuous encounter with his mother in an outhouse.
The satire at issue was a takeoff of an advertising campaign for Campari, an Italian apéritif. The real ads were tongue-in-cheek interviews with celebrities talking about their "first time". The ads, which played off the double entendre in the headline ("X talks about his first time"), initially appeared to discuss the star's first sexual experience before revealing that the discussion actually concerned the subject's first time drinking Campari.
The Hustler parody, created by writer Terry Abrahamson and art director Mike Salisbury, featured a picture of Falwell, and a fictional "interview" in which "Falwell" describes his first sexual experience as occurring "with Mom" in an outhouse while both were "drunk off our God-fearing asses on Campari." In the spoof interview, "Falwell" goes on to say that he was so intoxicated that "Mom looked better than a Baptist whore with a $100 donation," that he decided to have sex with his mother since she had "showed all the other guys in town such a good time", and that they had intercourse regularly afterwards. Finally, when asked if he had tried Campari since, "Falwell" answered, "I always get sloshed before I go out to the pulpit. You don't think I could lay down all that bullshit sober, do you?" The ad carried a disclaimer in small print at the bottom of the page, reading "ad parody—not to be taken seriously." The magazine's table of contents also listed the ad as "Fiction; Ad and Personality Parody."
Falwell sued Larry Flynt, Hustler magazine, and Flynt's distribution company in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia for libel, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Before trial, the court granted Flynt's motion for summary judgment on the invasion of privacy claim, and the remaining two charges proceeded to trial. A jury found in favor of Flynt on the libel claim, stating that the parody could not "reasonably be understood as describing actual facts about [Falwell] or actual events in which [he] participated." However, the jury ruled in favor of Falwell on the intentional infliction of emotional distress charge, and awarded Falwell $150,000.
Flynt appealed to the Fourth Circuit. The Fourth Circuit affirmed, rejecting Flynt's argument that the actual-malice standard of New York Times Company v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254 (1964) applied in cases of intentional infliction of emotional distress where the plaintiff was a public figure, as Falwell concededly was. The New York Times standard focused too heavily on the truth of the statement at issue; for the Fourth Circuit, it was enough that Virginia law required the defendant to act intentionally. After the Fourth Circuit declined to rehear the case en banc, the U.S. Supreme Court granted Flynt's request to hear the case.
The People vs. Larry Flynt, a 1996 film directed by Miloš Forman starring Woody Harrelson as Flynt and Edward Norton as Flynt's lawyer Alan Isaacman, features the case prominently.
