MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD! Sign the petition at: savedogs.soidog.org/petition
Dame Judi and Downton Abbey stars Lesley Nicols and Peter Egan, attended a briefing for MPs on how to bring an end to the appalling trade in dog meat.
They have called on MPs to put pressure on the governments of countries where dogs are slaughtered for human consumption to take action to end the production, trade and killing of dogs and cats for their meat.
More than 20 MPs, including shadow Home Office minister, Steve Reed, and Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington, John McDonnell, have pledged action on the issue...
We, the undersigned MP’s, hereby call upon the governments of Cambodia, China, Laos PDR, Indonesia, South Korea, The Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to take action to end the production, trade in, and slaughtering of dogs and cats for the purposes of meat and by-products.
In recognition of:
1. The mounting body of evidence linking the consumption of such meat to human health and disease transmission notably cholera and trichinellosis.
2. The universal acceptance that the uncontrolled movement of unvaccinated dogs is the main cause for the spread of rabies.
3. The increasing number of pet animals brutally stolen for the purpose of meat and skin production.
4. The significant impact the production of, trade in, slaughtering and consumption of dog and cat meat poses to animal welfare.
5. The increasing awareness of the suffering of fur bearing animals, including dogs and cats, whose skin and fur products are widely exported and sold.
There can be no excuse for the intolerable suffering and cruelty these animals are facing as a result of this trade. The time has come to end it.
____________________________________________________________________________________
Around 30 million dogs are consumed every year in Asia – approximately 20 million in China, more than 1.5 million in South Korea and an estimated five million in Vietnam, among other countries.
The animals are intensively farmed and in some cases even stolen from the streets and from owners.
They endure horrific conditions before being transported – in some cases smuggled – crammed tightly into cages, often without food or water.
The dogs are kept alive until purchased, when they will be slaughtered by methods including being thrown alive into large vats of boiling water or bleeding out from the neck or groin.
In some horrifying cases the poor animals are tortured beforehand in the mistaken belief that this makes adrenaline-filled meat which tastes better.
Cruelty issues aside, the dog meat trade also has the potential for serious impact upon human health.
Recent research has shown that the sourcing, transportation, slaughter and consumption of dogs can assist in the transmission of diseases cholera, trichinellosis and rabies.
British actor Peter Egan spoke about the barbarity of the trade.
He said: "The dog meat trade is without doubt the cruelest process that happens in all of animal slaughter. The dogs are shown absolutely no sympathy, no love."
"I have developed my interest in cruelty to animals in all areas of food production and the dog meat trades is by far the most abhorrent thing that can happen to an animal on this planet.
"This isn't a question of whether you're a dog lover or not, it's a question of whether you like cruelty or not. Some people say 'I'm not a people lover' but you don't wish cruelty on them.
"It's not a question of whether you love a particular species or even like a particular species, it's whether you have a relationship with violence and cruelty."
He added: "The next step I would love to see from this really important meeting at the Houses of Parliament today is for the embassies to get in touch with each other in the various countries, for representatives from our Government in Great Britain to make contact and share their concern about the cruelty that is happening.
"What is also important to know is that where dog meat-eating is prevalent, in those countries the majority of the population are against it.
"It is not supported by the majority of the population in China or Korea or Cambodia. It is very much frowned upon. It's a minority activity and it is not cultural.
"It's illegal, it is run by gangsters and it is about money. But most importantly it's about cruelty."

The Labour leader was jeered by Conservative MPs as he tried to make the case against military action
UK Parliament to Vote on Expanded Attacks on Islamic State
Jeremy Corbyn was repeatedly heckled and shouted down by Tory MPs as he tried to make the case against air strikes .
The Labour leader frequently had to pause his speech in the face of jeering from the opposition benches.
At one point he was trying to read out a letter from a Syrian refugee who lives in his London constituency when he was interrupted by Tory laughter.
Mr Corbyn said he could not vote for military action when it would “almost inevitably lead to the deaths of innocent” civilians.
“For all members to take a decision that will put British servicemen and women in harms way and almost inevitably lead to the deaths of innocents is a heavy responsibility.
“It must be treated with the utmost seriousness and respect given to those who make a different judgement about the right course of action to take,” he said.
The long-standing pacifist said the spectre of Britain’s previous interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya “loomed” over the debate.
“To oppose another reckless and half-baked intervention isn’t pacifism. It’s hard-headed common sense.
“To resist ISIL’s determination to draw the western powers back into the heart of the Middle East isn’t to turn our backs on allies. It’s to refuse to play into the hands of ISIL,” he said.
The “overriding goal” should a negotiated peace settlement, not adding to the Coalition’s bombing campaign, Mr Corbyn told MPs.
And he claimed that the public was moving against air strikes. In a dig at his Labour colleagues in favour of air strikes, he reminded them he had been elected as a leader on the back of his anti-war stance.
Mr Corbyn tore into David Cameron ’s claim that there 70,000 troops in the Syrian Free Army ready to take the fight to ISIL on the ground.
“The Prime Minister has failed to convince almost anyone that even if British participation in the air campaign would tip the balance, that there are credible ground forces able to take back territory now held by ISIL.
“In fact, it’s quite clear there are no such forces,” he said.
The Labour leader then warned that air strikes would result in “mission creep” with Western boots on the ground.
“That’s what the Prime Minister’s bombing campaign could well lead to.
“It’s why the logic of an extended air campaign is mission creep and western boots on the ground – whatever the Prime Minister may say now about keeping British combat troops out of the fight,” he said.
The Labour leader provoked howls of protest from MPs when he refused to say if wanted Britain to withdraw from air strikes against ISIS in Iraq
Asked by pro-war Labour MP John Woodcock if he was favour of removing air protection for Kurdish forces in Iraq, Mr Corbyn replied: “It is not part of the motion today so we move on with this debate.”

In a 397-223 vote, British MPs have voted to extend airstrikes against Islamic State into Syria. Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn spoke passionately in support of the move, defying Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and backing the plan of PM David Cameron.
READ RT’s LIVE UPDATES on the vote http://on.rt.com/6y6h
After a tumultuous day of impassioned debate, the motion to extend airstrikes against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). Some 67 Labour MPs voted in favor of the strikes, swinging the vote in the government’s favor.
Hours after the vote, RAF jets carried out their first airstrikes on Syrian territory, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said early Thursday. He refused to give details of the specific sites targeted.
Earlier in the evening, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said raids could begin “very quickly” because jets are already stationed in the Middle East where they are carrying out attacks in Iraq.
Among the standout speeches in the course of the mammoth 10 hour debate was Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn’s closing remarks, which called on MPs to act following the atrocities in Paris last month.
The “carnage” in Paris “brought home the present danger” to the UK and fostered the need to act against the extremists, he said, because it could have been and “could still be” a British city.
Benn added it is Britain’s “moral and practical” duty to extend airstrikes into Syria.

The result will be welcomed by Prime Minister David Cameron, who previously pledged to only hold a vote once he was guaranteed the support of parliament.
However, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has suffered an embarrassing defeat, with 67 of his own MPs voting against him. He was forced by a rebellious shadow cabinet to allow his party to hold a free vote.
Still, the majority of Labour MPs – 153 – and 16 members of the Shadow Cabinet supported Corbyn in his case against launching Britain’s new overseas bombing campaign. Fifty-three MPs from the Scottish National Party (SNP) also cast “No” votes, along with three Social Democratic and Labour Party MPs. Others opposing the motion were two Liberal Democrats, two Plaid Cymru MPs, and one Green MP.
Earlier on Wednesday a spokesperson for the Corbyn camp said they expected to lose the vote, but claimed the government had “lost the argument.”
Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said airstrikes would ultimately pave the way for a battle on the ground, which he said is the only way to defeat IS.
“Airstrikes alone will not finish ISIL,” he said “but they will over time degrade ISIL and force a change in its behavior.”
Hammond said a ground assault will be needed in the end to oust ISIL from its Raqqa stronghold.
“Ultimately there will need to be a ground assault on Raqqa,” he said. “That will come in months or perhaps years.”
The vote on Wednesday evening was met with anti-war protests throughout the UK, with demonstrators in London staging a “die-in” outside the Houses of Parliament that blocked roads and brought traffic to a standstill.

wn.com/Raf Strikes Targets In Syria After Parliament Votes To Bomb Isis
In a 397-223 vote, British MPs have voted to extend airstrikes against Islamic State into Syria. Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn spoke passionately in support of the move, defying Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and backing the plan of PM David Cameron.

UK parliament votes to back Syria airstrikes after heated debate
Britain will join the U.S.-led coalition to conduct airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) strongholds in Syria after lawmakers on Wednesday voted to authorize the UK's participation.
MPs in the House of Commons voted 397 to 223 in favor of sending RAF Tornados into Syria, following a heated 10-hour debate.
Prime Minister David Cameron started by saying that the UK has the responsibility and capability to join the battle against IS militants in Syria.
"Last week, the whole international coalition had some 26 aircraft available. Eight of those were British Tornadoes, so typically the UK actually represents between a quarter and a third of the international coalition's precision bombing capability. And we also have about a quarter of the unmanned strike capability flying in the region. So we have a significant proportion of high-precision strike capability," Cameron said.
In his rebuttal to Cameron, opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said the UK's participation is "unlikely to make a huge difference".
"During more than a year of bombing, ISIL has expanded and lost territory. ISIL gains included the Iraqi city of Ramadi and the Syrian city of Palmyra. The claim that the superior British missiles will make the difference is actually quite hard to credit when the U.S. and other states, as an intervention said earlier, are struggling to find suitable targets. In other words, extending British bombing is unlikely to make a huge difference," Corbyn said, using an alternative acronym for IS.
Despite his strong opposition to Cameron's decision, Corbyn was forced by divisions in his own party to give his MPs a free vote.
Earlier on Tuesday, hundreds of anti-war activists gathered outside the Parliament to protest the vote.
"Bombing Syria can only be described as against the will of the people and against ordinary people. And I think that David Cameron has been so callous and opportunist to use what happened in Paris to further his own agenda. This is not the will of the British people," said one of the protesters.
The Ministry of Defense said the vote could mean "surveillance or operational missions over Syria," but would not give any details. More on: http://newscontent.cctv.com/NewJsp/news.jsp?fileId=329766

After a marathon debate full of drama and fury, MPs vote for air strikes against ISIS in Syria Britain last night joined the fight against ISIS in Syria after the Commons voted decisively for military action.
A day of drama, passion and fury in Westminster ended with MPs backing air strikes by 397 to 223, a majority of 174.
An anti-war amendment tabled by a coalition of Tory, Labour and SNP MPs was defeated by 390 to 211.
The historic vote means RAF Tornados armed with precision Brimstone missiles could be unleashed on ISIS targets within 24 hours.
Many Labour MPs were swayed by a breathtaking speech from Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn in favour of military action.
Mr Benn said the victims of the mass shooting in the Bataclan in Paris were deemed “justified” by ISIS, because they were “apostates engaged in prostitution and vice.”
In a dramatic moment, he told MPs: “If it had happened here, they could have been our children.”

British jets could be in action within hours as Labour concedes it cannot stop Syria bombing British jets were on standby to start bombing tonight as MPs looked set to back air strikes against ISIS in Syria.
Senior Labour sources accepted they were on course to lose the crunch vote authorising military action. But they insisted Jeremy Corbyn had won the argument.
David Cameron called on MPs to support air strikes against the "woman-raping, Muslim-murdering, medieval monsters" of ISIS.
And he warned they were "plotting to kill us and to radicalise our children right now".
Although the majority of Labour MPs are planning to vote against bombing, Downing Street was confident it had the numbers to win.
RAF missions could begin within hours if MPs back air strikes at the 10pm vote, No 10 insiders said.

Prime Minister's Question Time
Question Time in the House of Commons is an opportunity for MPs to question government ministers about matters for which they are responsible.
Prime Minister's Question Time, also referred to as PMQs, takes place every Wednesday that the House of Commons is sitting and gives MPs the chance to put questions to the Prime Minister.
In most cases, the session starts with a routine 'open question' from an MP about the Prime Minister's engagements. MPs can then ask supplementary questions on any subject, often one of current political significance.
Opposition MPs follow up on this or another topic, usually led by the Leader of the Opposition, Harriet Harman. Usually, she is the only MP allowed to come back with further questions.

On Thursday 20th November 2014 over 30 MPs took part in a debate in the House of Commons on money creation and society. This was the first time in 170 years, since the Bank Charter Act in 1844, that the topic has been fully debated.
Money creation affects almost every aspect of our lives, and is directly connected to almost all public policy, including public and private debt levels, house prices, and rising inequality, but it’s very poorly understood. A recent poll found that 7 out of 10 MPs believed that only the government can create money[1], when in fact 97% of money is created by banks as they make loans, as recently confirmed by the Bank of England[2]
Steve Baker MP:
"The methods of money production in society today are profoundly corrupting in ways that would matter to everyone if they were clearly understood. The essence of this debate is: who should be allowed to create money, how and at whose risk? It is no wonder that it has attracted support from across the political spectrum…"
"We are in a debt crisis of historic proportions because for far too long profit-maximising banks have been lending money into existence as debt with too few effective restraints on their conduct and all the risks of doing so forced on the taxpayer by the power of the state. A blend of legal privilege, private interest and political necessity has created, over the centuries, a system that today lawfully promotes the excesses for which capitalism is so frequently condemned. It is undermining faith in the market economy on which we rely not merely for our prosperity, but for our lives."
"Thankfully, the institution of money is a human, social institution and it can be changed. It has been changed and I believe it should be changed further. "

Positive Money is a not-for-profit research and campaign group. They work to raise awareness of the connections between our current monetary and banking system and the serious social, economic and ecological problems that face the UK and the world today. In particular they focus on the role of banks in creating the nation's money supply through the accounting process they use when they make loans - an aspect of banking which is poorly understood. Positive Money believe these fundamental flaws are at the root of - or a major contributor to - problems of poverty, excessive debt, growing inequality and environmental degradation.
A recent poll found that 7 out of 10 MPs believed that only the government can create money, when in fact 97% of money is created by banks as they make loans, as recently confirmed by the Bank of England
Michael Meacher MP:
"The banks have too much power and they have greatly abused it. First, they have been granted enormous privileges since they can create wealth simply by writing an accounting entry on a register. They decide who uses that wealth and for what purpose and they have used their power of credit creation hugely to favour property and consumption lending over business investment because the returns are higher and more secure. Thus the banks maximise their own interests but not the national interest. Secondly, if they fail to meet their liabilities, the banks are not penalised. Someone else pays up for them."

Opposition MPs follow up on this or another topic, usually led by the Leader of the Opposition, Edward Miliband. Usually, he is the only MP allowed to come back with further questions.
