The Academy Awards or The Oscars (the official title was rebranded as The Oscars in 2013 – changed from The Academy Awards) is an annual American awards ceremony honoring cinematic achievements in the film industry. The various category winners are awarded a copy of a statuette, officially the Academy Award of Merit, that is better known by its nickname Oscar. The awards, first presented in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, are overseen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
The awards ceremony was first televised in 1953 and is now seen live in more than 200 countries. The Oscars is also the oldest entertainment awards ceremony; its equivalents, the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theatre, and the Grammy Awards for music and recording, are modeled after the Academy Awards. The Academy Awards are widely considered to be the most prestigious cinema awards ceremony in the world.
The 86th Academy Awards ceremony was held on March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, later than usual as to not clash with the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The 87th Academy Awards ceremony was held on February 22, 2015. Historically given during the first quarter of the new year, the awards honor achievements for cinematic accomplishments for the preceding year. For example, 12 Years a Slave was awarded Best Picture for 2013, although the Oscar ceremony was conducted in 2014.
As of the 87th Academy Awards ceremony held on February 22, 2015, a total of 2,947 Oscars have been awarded.
The first Academy Awards presentation was held on May 16, 1929, at a private dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with an audience of about 270 people. The post-awards party was held at the Mayfair Hotel. The cost of guest tickets for that night's ceremony was $5 ($69 as of 2015),. Fifteen statuettes were awarded, honoring artists, directors and other personalities of the film-making industry of the time for their works during the 1927–28 period; the ceremony ran for 15 minutes.
Winners had been announced to media three months earlier; however, that was changed in the second ceremony of the Academy Awards in 1930. Since then and during the first decade, the results were given to newspapers for publication at 11:00 pm on the night of the awards. This method was used until the Los Angeles Times announced the winners before the ceremony began; as a result, the Academy has since 1941 used a sealed envelope to reveal the name of the winners.
The first Best Actor awarded was Emil Jannings, for his performances in The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh. He had to return to Europe before the ceremony, so the Academy agreed to give him the prize earlier; this made him the first Academy Award winner in history. The winners were recognized for all the work done in a certain category during the qualifying period; for example, Jannings received the award for two movies in which he starred during that period, and Janet Gaynor later won a single Oscar for performances in three films. With the fourth ceremony the system changed, and professionals were honored for a specific performance in a single film. For the first six ceremonies, the eligibility period spanned two calendar years.
At the 29th ceremony, held on March 27, 1957, the Best Foreign Language Film category was introduced. Until then, foreign-language films were honored with the Special Achievement Award.
Oscar statuette
Although there are seven other types of annual awards presented by the Academy (the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the Gordon E. Sawyer Award, the Academy Scientific and Technical Award, the Academy Award for Technical Achievement, the John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation, and the Student Academy Award) plus two awards that are not presented annually (the Special Achievement Award in the form of an Oscar statuette and the Honorary Award that may or may not be in the form of an Oscar statuette), the best known one is the Academy Award of Merit more popularly known as the Oscar statuette. Made of gold-plated britannium on a black metal base, it is 13.5 in (34 cm) tall, weighs 8.5 lb (3.85 kg) and depicts a knight rendered in Art Deco style holding a crusader's sword standing on a reel of film with five spokes. The five spokes represent the original branches of the Academy: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians.
No model was used during the design process of the statuette. Sculptor George Stanley (who also did the Muse Fountain at the Hollywood Bowl) sculpted Cedric Gibbons's design in clay and Sachin Smith cast the statuette in 92.5 percent tin and 7.5 percent copper and then gold-plated it[citation needed]. The only addition to the Oscar since it was created is a minor streamlining of the base.

I do not own the rights to any of the music, but this video is not monetized. No profit is being made. That said, here is the music used in this video, in order of appearance:
- Theme from "Police Squad," composer Ira Newborn
- Theme from "Man of Steel," composer Hans Zimmer
- "Carry on Wayward Son," Kansas
- "U Can't Touch This," MC Hammer. A karaoke version of music from MC Hammer was used, but with obviously different lyrics
- "Home," Phillip Phillips
- "Happy," Pharrell Williams
Most of the video was shot as the training occurred. The only exception was the video shot for the "You Can't Touch This" safety video. However, the recruits were still in the academy and the dancing was considered part of their fitness regimen. So, we did not ignore any emergencies while shooting this video. Professional firefighters were all in their stations, ready to respond to any emergency. The main purpose of the "You Can't Touch This" safety video is to simply raise awareness about safety, and preventing accidents.

This video was a gift to the graduates of Chattanooga Fire Academy 2014 and is not for sale. No profit was made from the production of this video.
This video starts by paying homage to the popular HBO series "Game of Thrones." The composer was Ramin Djawadi. Instead of seeing different fictional kingdoms, you see an aerial view of Chattanooga (TN) and all 19 Chattanooga fire stations. This was done with Google Earth.
The next segment featuring our fitness instructor used the theme song for the HBO series "True Blood." The song "Bad Things" was written and performed by Jace Everett.
The video then gets more serious with a short two minute segment focusing solely on the recruits climbing a 109-foot ladder for the first time. Most of the footage was taken by helmet cam to provide a first-person point of view. You can actually hear the firefighters breathing through their air masks, and you also hear the wind picking up as they get higher up the ladder. The beautiful music was composed by Hans Zimmer, and was the theme for the movie "Man of Steel."
The next two segments focus on the fire training. One main HD camera and several helmet cams were used to capture the training as it happened. The particularly dramatic music came from the movie "Inception." The composer was Zack Hemsey.
The video wraps up with the song "Good Riddance" by Green Day, and "Happy" by Pharrell Williams.
