The New York Mets: Part 1 (1962)
The Mets' were born and National League baseball was back in New York. And what a season it was! They set a modern-day mark for the worst season on record with 40 wins and 120 losses. But they still outdrew the Yankees ;-)
This is Part 1 of my 12-part collection celebrating the first 45 years of the New York Mets.

1962 MLB spring training. Starting with the Yankees, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris swing bats and warm up for the start of the season. Then the video goes to the Colt .45s baseball camp. This was the first year the Colts were playing in Major League Baseball and their franchise soon died out and closed in 1964. The story then moves to the San Francisco Giants training came and shows Willie Mayes batting, the Alou brothers and Don Larsen. The baseball Classic goes to National League -- 3-1. Washington's $24,000,000 stadium is jammed to capacity and among the crowd of 46,000 is President Kennedy. They all see the National League All-Stars take the measure of the American League. Stan (The man!) Musial pinch-hits a single that means the first run, Maury Wills runs wild on the bases and Willie Mays makes some spectacular catches: It all adds up to a National 3-1 win.

1962 newsreel of Major League Baseball's All Star Game.

"Meet the Mets" is the fight song of the New York Mets of Major League Baseball.
The song first appeared in 1962, heralding the return of National League baseball to New York City. It was written in 1961 by Ruth Roberts and Bill Katz. A modernized version was recorded in 1984.
Meet the Mets, meet the Mets,
Step right up and greet the Mets.
Bring your kiddies, bring your wife,
Guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball,
Knockin' those home runs over the wall.
East side, West side, everybody's coming down,
To meet the M-E-T-S Mets, of New York town.
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the streets,
Where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
Oh, they're hollerin' and cheerin' and they're jumpin' in their seats,
Where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
All the fans are true to the orange and blue,
So hurry up and come on down -
'cause we've got ourselves a ball club,
The Mets of New York town!
Give 'em a yell! Give 'em a hand!
And let 'em know you're rootin' in the stands!
Come on and...
Meet the Mets, meet the Mets,
Step right up and greet the Mets.
Bring your kiddies, bring your wife,
Guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball,
Knockin' those home runs over the wall.
East side, West side, everybody's coming down,
To meet the M-E-T-S Mets,
Of New York town,
Of New York town!
