None of the soldiers wore metal helmets in 1914. The French were the first to introduce them in 1915. Future prime minister Winston Churchill wore a French one during his time on the front in 1916.
Famous people who served include the writers A. A. Milne, creator of Winnie the Pooh, Lord of The Rings author JRR Tolkien, sculptor Henry Moore, and the actor Basil Rathbone.
The Germans were the first to use flamethrowers in WWI. Their flamethrowers could fire jets of flame as far as 130 feet (40 m).
The Eiffel Tower intercepted German radio messages leading to the execution of Dutch exotic dancer and arguably the most famous female spy in history: Mata Hari. Though she always denied being a spy, the French executed her in 1917.
France, not Germany, was the first country to use gas against enemy troops in WWI. In August 1914, they fired the first tear gas grenades (xylyl bromide) against the Germans. In January 1915, Germany first used tear gas against Russian armies, but the gas turned to liquid in the cold air. In April 1915, the Germans were the first to use poisonous chlorine gas.
Initially the only protection against gas attacks was a cloth soaked in a soldier’s own urine. British officer Edward Harrison invented the first practical gas mask, saving thousands of lives.

Poison gas killed 80,000 soldiers in World War I. Nearly a million more were victims who suffered its lingering effects. Initially the wind distributed chlorine gas across the battlefields of the western front but an arms race quickly developed until one in three shells contained some form of toxic gas.
It's not the statistics, however, that make this a successful documentary. A surprising amount of black-and-white footage and interviews with survivors and relatives of key players tell a compelling tale of motivations and consequences. For those who adhere to the maxim that history repeats itself, it's worth noting that despite an international convention banning chemical weapons, both sides of the Great War deployed poison gases with few reservations. As one interviewee puts it, patriotism defeated morality.

The Battle of Verdun was the longest and deadliest battle of the First World War, lasting ten months, with 700,000 killed and hundreds of thousands of others wounded. Verdun was a strongly fortified region on the eastern border of France and the Germans determined that if they could take it, France’s defenses would collapse. German strategists realized it would be an extremely costly undertaking but calculated that it would be worth the lives of thousands of soldiers to achieve their objectives. The fact that the French were likely to defend the fortress with all available men was looked upon as an opportunity to killed tens of thousands of Frenchmen as efficiently as possible.

The following are excerpts from President Obama's speech at the D-Day 65th Anniversary Ceremony:
[...] It was unknowable then, but so much of the progress that would define the 20th century, on both sides of the Atlantic, came down to the battle for a slice of beach only six miles long and two miles wide. More particularly, it came down to the men who landed here -- those who now rest in this place for eternity, and those who are with us here today. Perhaps more than any other reason, you, the veterans of that landing, are why we still remember what happened on D-Day. You're why we keep coming back.
For you remind us that in the end, human destiny is not determined by forces beyond our control. You remind us that our future is not shaped by mere chance or circumstance. Our history has always been the sum total of the choices made and the actions taken by each individual man and woman. It has always been up to us.
[...] Friends and veterans, we cannot forget. What we must not forget is that D-Day was a time and a place where the bravery and the selflessness of a few was able to change the course of an entire century. At an hour of maximum danger, amid the bleakest of circumstances, men who thought themselves ordinary found within themselves the ability to do something extraordinary. They fought for their moms and sweethearts back home, for the fellow warriors they came to know as brothers. And they fought out of a simple sense of duty -- a duty sustained by the same ideals for which their countrymen had once fought and bled for over two centuries.

You may ask yourself, "What makes Chicago Sci-Fi special?" I pride myself on the fact that I try to give fans videos with explanation for each segment interview, rather than just throw up the video "as is" "to be first"; I don't plaster logos all over the video to share or watermark;
I also will post more obscure interviews from Producers, Special Effects Supervisors and Costume Designers! They deserve their 15 seconds of fame as well. (And it's kinda fun to listen to them as well!)

An interview with geopolitical analyst Joel Skousen covers the setup for another world war, the failures of the alternative media and what you can do to protect yourself.
In this fascinating interview, Joel Skousen explains why the Ukraine ri sing was a a stealth Russian invasion aided by the West. He explains how the fall of The Berlin Wall was nothing more than a false flag and how this ties into the Hegelian Dialectic, Victoria Nuland’s use of profanity towards the European Union, Henry Kissinger, The Bilderberg Group, Barak Obama, The Council on Foreign Relations, ISIS, The War on Terror, Svoboda, and how all right wing racist movements are run by the CIA, our march towards World War 3 and when we can expect the WAR to start, how to prepare, what to do, and the implications towards yourself and your children. Joel is a mastermind on geo political content and this interview is not to be missed.

O.B. Streeper served with the Army Air Corps from March 1943 to September 1945. He was shot down May 27, 1944, over southern France. He parachuted to safety, and joined the French resistance. During one of the missions that he participated in, a bag was accidentally left behind contained his name and some of his identification. After finding this bag, the Nazis were apparently convinced that Streeper was one of the key figures in the French resistance so they offered a large reward for him—large enough that it represented several years of salary to an average French citizen—so Streeper had to distance himself from some of his colleagues in the resistance for fear that someone might turn him in for the reward money.

Antony C Sutton gave an interview back in 1980 discussing his research on the funding of World War II, when American and European financiers were funding both the Nazi party and the communists.
Sutton was an economics professor at California State University, Los Angeles and a research fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution from 1968 to 1973.
In 1973, Sutton published a popularized, condensed version of the three volumes called National Suicide: Military Aid to the Soviet Union and was thereby forced out of the Hoover Institution. His conclusion from his research on the issue was that the conflicts of the Cold War were "not fought to restrain communism", since the United States, through financing the Soviet Union "directly or indirectly armed both sides in at least Korea and Vietnam"; rather, these wars were organised in order "to generate multibillion-dollar armaments contracts"
For impressive evidence of Western participation in the early phase of Soviet economic growth, see Antony C. Sutton's Western Technology and Soviet Economic Development: 1917--1930, which argues that 'Soviet economic development for 1917--1930 was essentially dependent on Western technological aid' (p.283), and that 'at least 95 per cent of the industrial structure received this assistance.' (p. 348).
Sutton died June 17, 2002 at the age of 77.

Clement Dowler's B-17 was shot down over Avord, France on April 28, 1944. It was his thirteenth mission as a ball turret gunner with the 91st Bomb Group/324th Squadron. For the next five months, he successfully evaded German patrols and Nazi collaborators with the help of local French Resistance fighters known as le Maquis. Following his escape in September of 1944, Mr. Dowler was questioned by the U.S. Army Military Intelligence Service at Headquarters, European Theater of Operations. The resulting report was marked "SECRET" and titled Escape and Evasion Report No. 1669, Evasion in France. Only recently has this document been made available to the public in electronic format. This video interview was recorded on January 11, 2014 for the Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress. It contains Mr. Dowler's first-person account of his experiences during World War II, including the time he spent fighting alongside French Resistance units and an American OSS unit in occupied France.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate is a historical action-adventure open world stealth video game developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft. It was released on October 23, 2015, for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and on November 19, 2015, for Microsoft Windows. It is the ninth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, and the successor to 2014's Assassin's Creed Unity.
Set within London in 1868 during the Industrial Revolution, the story follows twins Jacob and Evie Frye as they navigate the corridors of organized crime during the Victorian era and fight against the established order, controlled by the Templars. The game retains the series' third-person open world exploration as well as introducing new traveling systems and refined combat and stealth mechanics. Unlike its direct predecessors but like the first two main games in the series, Syndicate does not feature any multiplayer gameplay.
Assassin's Creed Syndicate marks the first time in the series where the player can freely switch between two different protagonists. It is also the first main entry in the series to feature a playable female protagonist; Assassin's Creed III: Liberation featured a female protagonist, but that game is not a part of the main series. Male lead Jacob Frye is meant to be more of a hot-headed brawler, specialized in close combat,[3] while his twin sister Evie is strong in stealth and relies on her intelligence and wit. The Assassins' main weapons this time around include brass knuckles, a compact revolver, a cane sword and the traditional Nepalese curved kukri knife and combat is faster-paced than before with latency having been cut in half and multiple enemies attacking the player at once. Additionally new travelling systems make their debut in the game, such as a rope launcher which allows the player to rappel up structures as well as create a zip-line between buildings, and carriages, which can all be piloted or simply occupied by the player, and trains. The rooftops of moving carriages can also be the setting of fights and parkour chases. London in the game is approximately 30% larger than Paris in Unity and consist of seven boroughs: Westminster, the Strand, the City of London, Whitechapel, the Thames, Southwark and Lambeth. The game has no multiplayer mode, and does not feature a companion app, which was introduced in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Side missions in the game have been designed to reflect the fight for power in London and are cohesive to the main story of the game. Players can also kidnap enemies for ransom then put them inside horse carriages and take them to a drop-off point.

Nikita Khrushchev Saved More Lives Than Anyone in History. In Jim Douglass' book "JFK and the Unspeakable" he outlines how we have been lied to about the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The American generals were strongly pushing Kennedy for a first strike nuclear war against the Soviet Union.

A popular television News magazine in the USA,
in which an ever changing team of CBS News correspondents contribute
segments ranging from hard news coverage to politics to lifestyle and pop culture.
Okay I know, it's a news program,
but it's one of the most watched television shows of all time.
As recent as 2002, TV Guide was ranked the #6 Greatest television show ever.
10 years later, the show is still going strong in it's 44th season
A Miami police forensics expert moonlights as a serial killer of criminals whom he believes have escaped justice.
Another very original subject matter. Dexter,
a blood spatter pattern analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who moonlights as a serial killer.
Set in Miami, the show's first season was largely based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
Film star Vince Chase navigates the vapid terrain of Los Angeles with a close circle of friends and his trusty agent.
This show made me wish that I was 5 years younger, and a celeb in Hollywood.
Based on the life of Mark Wahlberg The series deals with themes of male friendship
and real-life situations in modern-day Hollywood. The show is known for its array of guest stars,
usually featuring at least two celebrities per episode.

Tommy's Christmas parcels are despatched to the Front in this wartime newsreel item. The boosting of morale via the postal service was vital during World War I, and thousands of mailbags crossed the Channel every day. Tobacco was a popular gift to send to soldiers as well as practical items such as lice powder - not your average Christmas gift - but the contents of the parcels in this film remain a mystery...

This summer marks the centennial of the outbreak of World War I, perhaps the most transformative war in history. While the wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars harnessed national populations to the war effort in a way not previously seen since the emergence of the modern states system, WWI combined the mobilization of both populations and industrial power, enhanced by technology, to produce a most lethal form of warfare. WWI also redrew the map of Europe and created the modern Middle East, as it led to the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Russian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire, thereby unleashing nationalism the disruptive characteristics of which still plague us today. It also paved the way for the great ideological conflicts of the 20th century by unleashing the forces of state-based communism and fascism. To commemorate the outbreak of The Great War, FPRI and ROA will present a workshop offering presentations by three eminent scholars of the war. Michael Neiberg of the US Army War College will discuss the factors that led to the outbreak of the war. John Schindler of the US Naval War College will discuss the often overlooked role of Austria-Hungary in the war and the Eastern and Italian fronts. Kate Epstein of Rutgers University-Camden will discuss the role of pre-war British defense policy in the outbreak of the conflict. Mac Owens, editor of Orbis and professor at the Naval War College, will moderate the panel.

BATTLEFIELD DETECTIVES: WORLD WAR ONE - THE SOMME
In just one day almost 60,000 British soldiers were killed or wounded. Why was this first day on the Somme such a disaster for the British? World War I, trenches and barbed wire ran across the entire continent of Europe from the Mediterranean to the North Sea. At 7:30am on July 1st, 1916, after a devastating artillery bombardment lasting more than a week, 100,000 British soldiers waited in their trenches ready to advance on the German lines. They'd been told to expect minimal resistance, but as they picked their way slowly across no-man's-land, guns opened fire. Shells burst overhead, and waves of men were machine-gunned down. It was a military catastrophe of unprecedented proportions. Filmed on the battlefield itself, in laboratories and on firing ranges - archaeologists, military historians, and other experts from disciplines as diverse as metallurgy and geology investigate the factors and conduct tests to replicate and understand the factors that turned one terrible day into the bloodiest in the history of the British Army.
