VICE travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust.

West Africa is being plagued by a new outbreak of Ebola — a terrifying disease that causes its victims to bleed to death from the inside out. Ebola has no cure, and the latest epidemic is spreading fast.
VICE News visited Liberia, where many feel the new outbreak began, borne from the bushmeat markets of Lofa. Western scientists feel that the consumption and preparation of meat from monkeys, fruit bats, and other forest animals is behind the transmission of Ebola, and possibly a new supervirus, which if left uncontrolled could kill a third of the world's population.

As the Ebola outbreak continues to spread in West Africa, Liberia has been hit harder than any other country in the region. With over 3400 people believed to be infected and over 1800 deaths nationwide, Liberia’s government, healthcare workers, and international aid organizations are desperately trying to contain the deadly virus.
Though the capital city of Monrovia continues to function, Liberia's worn-down and ineffective infrastructure is proving to be insufficient in stopping the spread of the disease. Those trying to stop it are taking desperate measures as the international community dithers with lackluster efforts to help. VICE News went to Liberia to spend time with those on the front lines of the fight against the disease.

Voting is underway in Liberia to elect new senators, despite fears that the casting of ballots might lead to ebola spreading further. Voters are having their temperatures taken at polling stations and have been told to stand a metre apart. Ten thousand bottles of hand sanitiser have been deployed. Rights groups say they're worried about how transparent and credible the elections will be. The polls have twice been postponed but the Supreme Court dismissed a case to have them delayed until the ebola crisis was over. More than seven-thousand people are known to have died in the current outbreak, nearly half of them in Liberia.

The current Ebola outbreak in West Africa began in Guinea in December 2013. From there, it quickly spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone. Cases also appeared in Senegal and Nigeria, and a separate outbreak appeared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Today, Liberia lies is at the center of the epidemic, with more than 3,000 cases of infection — about half of which have been fatal.
Just as President Obama announced that he would be sending American troops to help combat the epidemic, VICE News traveled to Monrovia, Liberia's capital, to spend time with those on the front lines of the outbreak.
In Part 2, through the lens of an Ebola awareness team leader named Archie, we learn one of the main issues that is perpetuating the outbreak — confusion about the virus itself.

A patient suspected of suffering from the deadly Ebola virus left quarantine in Monrovia to search for food at a local market. The video shows him being chased and finally being caught by doctors. He is forced back into an ambulance while scared and angry crowds watched on.
One local woman said care for Ebola patients was so inadequate they were not even being fed.
“The patients are hungry, they are starving. No food, no water. The government need to do more,” she said.
More than 1,550 people in four West African countries have died from the virus since the outbreak was first recorded in March.
Liberia has the highest infection rate with around 700 deaths out of 1,327 suspected and confirmed cases.

Africa: War is Business reveals how war economies come into being in Africa, and how they are maintained. The film investigates the causes and effects of these economies, and where we as Western consumers fit into the equation. The film follows Prince Jaime de Bourbon de Parme, son of Princess Irene of the Netherlands, as he travels through Sierra Leone, Liberia and Congo looking for the cause of these wars in Africa and the role the continent's natural resources play in creating conflict. He wonders how countries so rich in these resources could be so overwhelmed by poverty.
Accountability Group Sierra Leone)

Through interviews, narrative and beautifully filmed surfing sequences in extreme destinations, Sam meets the emerging local surf cultures, and discovers the landscape, art, food, music, characters and carnival. AFRICA NEWS : A call to strike largely ignored by Liberian health workers, this despite some calls for 'danger money' to treat Ebola-infected patients. We cross to Monrovia for the latest. Also, Madagascar's ex-president Marc Ravalomanana is back on the Indian Ocean island, for the first time since he was deposed in a 2009 coup. And as campaigning for Mozambique's presidential elections draws to a close would-be voters call for key issues such as social inequality and unemployment to be adressed.

And turning now to West Africa, where several countries have now declared a public health emergency in the wake of the deadly outbreak of Ebola.
Paul, the first cases of Ebola in the region were confirmed back in February.
How far has the virus spread since then?
According to the World Health Organization, there's been over 13-hundred suspected cases... with the majority of those across the borders of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea,... in what has escalated into the worst Ebola outbreak on record.
The Liberian government announced on Thursday, a series of drastic measures to to halt the growing epidemic.
These included enacting strict a quarantine on a number of communities,... shutting down schools across the country,... and closing its borders.
A few hours later,...Sierra Leone followed suit by dispatching security forces to contain the epicenters of the outbreak.
Neighboring countries such as Ivory Coast are also launching campaigns to prevent any potential infections.
"Firstly, surveillance and reinforcement of health checks on border posts. Putting in place a system of taking charge of patients. Then protection measures for healthcare personnel. You know, health workers are on the frontline of this battle. We need to put at their disposal all the necessary equipment to protect them."
The deadly fever has claimed the lives of more than 6-hundred-70 people this year and health authorities say that figure is expected to rise.
There is currently no cure or vaccine for the Ebola virus, which has a fatality rate of up to 90 percent.

At the end of the earth, there’s a lonely weather station on the shores of the freezing Barents Sea. It is staffed by three people, each working a year-long work shift. They are waiting for a ship – their only connection to the mainland. Until it comes, they must try and stay sane.
This is the story of three people who may have the loneliest job in the world. Slava, his young colleague Ustin and Ustin’s wife, Rita, are the only people living in the abandoned village of Khodovarikha. Spending their lives in voluntary confinement on a small spit of land on the northern Barents Sea, they work year-long shifts at a weather station. Once a year, a ship comes to bring them supplies. It's their only chance to go on holiday to the mainland or to quit their job completely. Until that day comes, they must find a way to live and work together amicably.
There isn’t much to do in the former village of Khodovarikha. Abundant local wildlife provides ample opportunities for hunting and fishing, while the harsh beauty of the pristine, natural landscape offers a magnificent, meditative backdrop for those who can appreciate being on their own. It seems as though time itself flows differently here than on the mainland. Soon, the lives the weathermen led before arriving here begin to sink into oblivion.
Entries in a log kept by their predecessors provide evidence of the dangers posed by roaming animals, as well as wild behavior by former weathermen in this unsociable environment. Workers here have been known to lose their minds and their tempers, leading to lethal consequences.
It definitely takes an extraordinary type of person to do this job. Few can enjoy the hermetic existence that is part and parcel of this lifestyle. Another difficulty faced by Khodovarikha's inhabitants is the importance of maintaining a good relationship with those they live and work with daily. As history shows, this skill is essential not only for creating a healthy environment but for the safety of everyone involved. Finally, it takes courage to be able to stay so far away from civilization, as, in the event of an emergency, there is no guarantee that help will arrive in time. By and large, those who work here have only themselves to count on. So, what was it that attracted Slava, Ustin and Rita to this unusual and very demanding line of work?

For this year World Malaria Day, I have decided to highlight an organization who works in the field to fight malaria in emergency situations. I have worked with them and witnessed the great job they are doing in the field, so these few images will show you some of their activities.
The MENTOR Initiative is a unique international NGO, registered in the UK. This specialist group is dedicated to providing essential disease control and technical and operational support in emergencies and recovering crises.
MENTOR directly assists national and international humanitarian groups and authorities working in the most fragile states to improve the way in which they can respond to crises that befall them.
MENTOR has established and delivers large-scale and effective malaria, and related, disease control directly through to the affected communities and, where possible, utilising the existing health delivery system. The unique operational relief model developed by The MENTOR Initiative has proved highly effective in three core areas:
•Conflict-based crises such as eastern Chad
•Rapidly onset natural disasters such as flooding in eastern Kenya, the Asian tsunami, and the Yogyakarta earthquake
•Recovery stages that follow these crises such as Angola and Liberia
Fragile states present the greatest challenge to achieving the World Millennium Goals. These states are home to just 14% of the worlds population but these represent the poorest communities on earth who suffer the greatest burden of disease and malnutrition.
Fragile states are those most affected by conflict or natural disasters. In sub-Saharan Africa today over 25% of the total population are living in countries severely affected by conflict or population displacement. These countries include the most malaria-endemic regions in the world.
Malaria is the number one cause of morbidity and mortality in these countries and constitutes the major part of the patient-load on the health system. Over 30% of the worlds annual malaria deaths occur in these few countries as a direct result of poor access to effective malaria prevention and case management services.
Some fragile states in Africa, Asia and South America are increasingly at risk of malaria outbreaks, as well as the gradual re-emergence of malaria and related diseases. This is in part due to global warming and the resultant changes in the world's weather patterns, which is enlarging the environment in which the malaria vector, the anopheles mosquito, can thrive.
Natural crises such as the regular flooding in the horn of Africa, the current Asia floods, the tsunami and the recent earthquake in Yogyakarta are dramatic examples of how the malaria burden and risk to highly vulnerable populations can suddenly increase.
New, highly effective malaria control tools and approaches have been developed in recent years and the WHO has made recommendations that malaria endemic countries incorporate these new protocols in their National Malaria Control Programme (or equivalent). However, this is far from simple to achieve and requires considerable support from the international community. To establish effective malaria control in these challenging settings demands high levels of co-ordination and standardization across humanitarian agencies and agreement and buy-in from relevant country authorities.

U.S. military from Fort Bragg, North Carolina trained on Friday (October 10 ) in safety procedures to avoid exposure to the deadly Ebola virus ahead their deployment in West Africa.
U.S. troops are scheduled to deploy to Monrovia, Liberia, by the end of October as part of the Joint Force Command for "Operation United Assistance," the Department of Defense announced in September.
A group of soldiers carefully listened to instructors from the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, who spelled out the dangerous of Ebola: It kills nearly half of the people it infects.
"We're taking every measure that we can to ensure that the soldiers understand you know how to operate in an environment that may have that may become exposed to Ebola," said Mike Talley, U.S. Commander, 44th Medical Brigade.
Military officials said soldiers will not be working with Ebola victims, but will be setting up infrastructure that support other agencies.
With the previously announced unit deployments, this will bring the total Army commitment to about 3,200 soldiers.
The Ebola virus has killed nearly 4,000 people in West Africa since March in the largest outbreak on record. It causes haemorrhagic fever and is spread through direct contact with body fluids from an infected person.
The World Health Organization has said it sees no evidence of the disease being brought under control in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

LEAD-IN:
Jordan faces massive droughts in the future due to climate change.
That's according to environmental expert, Dr. Dureid Mahasneh.
He says decreasing sea levels and shorter rainy seasons mean farmers will struggle to grow crops.
His comments come as the United Nations holds its Climate Change Conference in Peru.
STORYLINE:
A farmer sows seeds on his arable farm in Southern Shouneh, Jordan.
His livelihood depends on being able to grow crops in the earth here.
But agricultural workers say it's becoming more difficult to produce harvests like these.
And they claim that's because of weather changes.
"I've been here at this farm for 15 years. Before there was a lot of rain and low temperatures, but recently every year we see less rain water and increases in temperatures. Many farmers quit this business because of this issue (climate change)," says farm owner, Abu Mohammad.
Some experts think the situation is only going to get worse.
They blame climate change for the lack of rainfall.
Dr. Dureid Mahasneh is a freelance consultant on environment and water issues in Jordan. Currently the CEO for Business Development for the Tawfiq Gargour Group, Mahasneh was Secretary General of the Jordan Valley Authority and head of both the Jordanian Israeli Joint Water Committee and the Jordanian Syrian Joint Water committee from 1996 - 1999.
"I think whenever climate change increases in the region, its impact will increase in countries like Jordan which suffer water shortages. Therefore the ability to access water will be less, and the amount of agriculture production will be different from one season to another. With the increase in population - whether natural or through immigration - and with the shortage of water, Jordan will suffer from a massive drought in the coming years," he says.
Jordan hosts hundreds of thousand of refugees from Syria and Iraq who've fled violence in their homelands.
That puts a strain on a country already suffering from water scarcity.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it's among the poorest countries in the world in terms of water availability.
Dr. Mahasneh thinks these water shortages could eventually be catastrophic for food production.
"With climate change, rainy seasons began to vary from year to year. So there is no estimate for the timing of plantings, the timing of harvest, there will be no knowledge if the plantings will be affected by frost. So the damage will not be only on the water inventory and the availability of water, but also on the plants. Also the lack of rain will contribute to increasing desertification."
A report published 27 November 2014 by the Jordanian government (The Third National Communication on Climate Change) predicts precipitation in the southern and eastern regions will drop by 30 percent by 2050.
And temperatures will rise by 1.5 - 2.5 degrees Celsius.
But the consequences are already being felt.
Dr. Mahasneh says: "Since the impact of climate change began, we started to notice the decline in the water level of the Dead Sea. This is the for two reasons. First, the increase of evaporation due to high temperatures. Secondly, a result of water shortages because of shorter rainy seasons and the amount of rain obtained by the region, therefore the water inventory will dry up. Jordan used to depend on twelve water basins but now only four water basins are available and because of high consumption, it will not be possible to use it after few years."
Extreme weather events, such as flash floods and snowstorms like these that hit Jordan last winter - are predicted to be more frequent.

The creators of a light powered purely by gravity hope it will provide an alternative to toxic kerosene in the developing world.
Almost a fifth of the world's population has no access to electricity so have to use other means to heat and light their homes - which are often expensive, dangerous and unhealthy.
But the team at Deciwatt have created the Gravity Light, which they hope will get millions of people in the developing world away from kerosene and out of the poverty-fuel trap.
Kerosene consumes between 10% and 20% of the income of the very poor and a single kerosene lamp burning for four hours a day emits 100kg of carbon dioxide a year.
Quaqua installs the trial Gravity Light in his home in Liberia
The World Bank estimates 780 million women and children breathe kerosene fumes equivalent to inhaling 40 cigarettes a day and these fumes kill an estimated 1.5 million in Africa every year.
Deciwatt was asked by the charity, Solar Aid, to develop a viable alternative to kerosene lanterns for under $10 (£6).
"We found very quickly that the target price that they wanted to achieve was impractical based on current technology with solar panels and batteries combined," says Jim Reeves, who developed Gravity Light with fellow designer Martin Riddiford.
"It got us thinking about how to tackle the problem in a way that could achieve the objective within the target price."
Janitor Lorenzo Garneo fills a Gravity Light bag in Liberia
Wind-up lights can take two or three minutes to charge but Gravity Light takes three seconds to lift for 30 minutes of light. It uses a mechanism similar to a grandfather-clock.
A bag is filled with 10kg of material, found in the local environment. This could be soil, rocks or rubble. The bag is suspended from a riveted plastic cord which is suspended below the light.
Once the bag is lifted, a series of gears turn powering a plastic generator, which turns the light on. The generator can be used to recharge other devices including radios and batteries.
Through a successful fundraising campaign, a prototype of Gravity Light is now being trialled in 26 countries through 55 partner organisations.
Mr Reeves says the product has taken more than four years to get to this stage and had many iterations - but that the feedback from the user trials was essential.
A young girl helps one of the village elders construct Gravity Light
"We've had amazing feedback from Liberia, the Philippines, Guatemala," he said.
"They're just the first indication. In essence the product is delivering what people need."
Lorenzo Garneo, head janitor at Our School, Liberia voluntarily broke a panel in his false ceiling to install the light.
He struggled at first with the hooks but was particularly excited at the prospect of having light for his children's room. There are seven in his household.
Taking the product to scale and making it affordable is one of the many challenges the company now faces.
"They need to figure out a service package that will get this in the hands of the target users and allow them to pay for it over a period of time," says Rob Law, the founder of Trunki, the children's luggage firm which has grown across the world.

Gravity Light say they are looking in the medium term at introducing in-country assembly and then ultimately in-country manufacture, which would strip out import duties.
"The end cost for the user will be reduced and you can build a local supply chain that is built on a local business, which is all good for the local economy," says Mr Reeves.
To achieve the target retail price of between $5 (£3) and $10 (£6), the team is planning to launch Gravity Light in both high-income and low-income economies in parallel.
They will then use profits and donations from the high-income markets to initially subsidise distribution and associated costs in low income markets.
For now, the main focus for the team is raising investment and seeking partners to move the project forward, in order to achieve their goal of bringing safe and efficient light to the developing world.

Ignorance prevails when a society or nation chooses to value the appearance of expertise, to value the theater of overconfidence, and to cheer for the bluster of morons rather than admit that they have unanswered questions on subjects they do not yet grasp. For nothing is worse for the self absorbed than to acknowledge that they do not know..
Entire nations have fallen throughout history because of this terrible weakness..
By extension, such ignorance is not just an inherent disease but also an easily exploitable disease. When we refuse to think critically and examine our surroundings thoroughly, we become like grazing gazelles oblivious to the predators encircling us in the tall grass. And, just as there are predatory individuals that hide amongst us, there are are also predatory oligarchs that camouflage themselves as benevolent politicos and financial professionals standing above us. Normal predators we fear, establishment predators we invite into our homes as protectors, saviors, and partners..
The disease of ignorance leaves us vulnerable to many other plagues, including literal plagues like the Ebola virus. When we take the establishment at its word concerning the threat of Ebola outbreak, we make ourselves vulnerable. When people assume that the worst could never happen to them, history shows us that it inevitably does..
The recent discovery of an Ebola infected patient in Dallas, Texas has led to reasonable concern from the general population, but mainstream media efforts along with CDC and White House spin have subdued any practical response by the citizenry. The constant droning voice of the establishment claims there is nothing to be worried about; that even if there was an outbreak in the U.S., it would be quickly squashed by highly prepared medical response teams..
First and foremost, the existence of just one Ebola infected person within America's borders indicates a likelihood of others, or the possibility of others in the near future unless policies and procedures are changed. As far as I can tell, the government has no intention of introducing rational fail-safes such as requiring mandatory quarantine for those seeking to reenter the U.S. from known outbreak regions, shutting down unrestricted travel into the country from countries with Ebola, training hospitals properly in the identification of the disease, or committing mass resources to quelling Ebola in hot zones before it reaches our shores, at least not in time to make a difference..
Secondly, the establishment also has no intention of giving the general public accurate information as to the behavior and dangers of Ebola. Those I have spoken with in the medical field including some who work within major city hospitals have related to me that the CDC has not been honest in its assessment of the probability of outbreak. For example, the CDC is consistently reminding the public that Ebola is not an “airborn” disease, and this is technically true as far as the science indicates. However, they forget to mention that it is indeed a “droplet born” disease, meaning, it can travel through the air carried in an infected cough or sneeze. The tight quarters of an airplane make for a perfect petri dish, with droplets and particulates passing back and forth through the same space and oxygen for hours at a time. The spread of Ebola is nowhere near as containable as the CDC claims..
Most hospitals are completely unprepared to fend off an outbreak of a virus as destructive as Ebola. Little to no standardized training has taken place, and some facilities are only now putting together a list of emergency procedures. Human error within the chain of care also occurs often, as we saw in Dallas, Texas, and these errors can lead to greater infection in a hospital environment..
CDC and WHO efforts in countries like Liberia have been so ineffective and halfhearted it leads one to question why their budgets are in the billions of dollars? Where is all their capital and their resources going if not to bring an unprecedented hammer down on a clearly dangerous outbreak of Ebola? Why is the virus being allowed to flourish rather than being destroyed right where it started? Where has the full force of the CDC been for the past several months while death gestates in Africa?
The one legitimate function of government, any government, is to protect the right of the people to pursue their own life, liberty, and happiness. I think stopping the invasion of mortal viruses would fall into this category. The one job our government is MANDATED to do, and it refuses to do it. Why??
And meanwhile, ebola has killed about 4,500 people so far...

Dave Reading, the chief executive of Aureus Mining (LON:AUE, TSE:AUE), discusses the group’s financial results and operational update, which reveal it is on track to produce first gold from the New Liberty mine in Liberia in May. Aureus ended 2014 with cash in the bank of US$33mln and has subsequently raised US$15.3mln for a new mine plan that will see higher production in the first year to boost cash flow. Reading talks to Proactive Investors about the state of Ebola in Liberia, as well as the progress at the Ndablama project in Cameroon.

David Reading, chief executive of Aureus Mining (LON:AUE), says the fact Liberia has been declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is the key headline for the company. It comes as the company revealed the Leopard Rock and Ndablama deposits have been included within the mining licence for Bea Mountain in the West African nation. Reading adds that he hopes the company does not rush into raising cash, reiterating the strategy to reach production and generate revenues. He adds that the company is currently only worth about half the value of its New Liberty mine, which is eyeing production at the end of the month.

Paul Thomson, chief financial officer of Aureus Mining (LON:AUE) (TSE:AUE), says there’s plenty more to come from the company after it announced the first gold pour as its New Liberty mine in Liberia. At full production, New Liberty is expected to produce 120,000 oz of gold a year and is currently on track to reach steady state production by the end of 2015.
Speaking to Proactive, Thomson says regular cash flow from the mine is just around the corner and dividend payments to investors expected in due course. However, he stressed that Aureus will not become a one mine operation and has a strong pipeline of projects including Ndablama are Weaju, which are being progressed.

OUT NOW - http://www.vbs.tv/watch/the-vice-guide-to-travel/the-vice-guide-to-liberia-1-of-8
In the summer of 2009, Smith, along with VICE UK Editor Andy Capper, traveled to Liberias capital, Monrovia, to assess whether the war-ravaged country had moved past a decade of brutal violence. What they discovered is that despite the United Nations eventual intervention, most of Liberias young people still live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution.
The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias lie in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. Americas one and only foray into African colonialism is keeping a very uneasy peace indeed.
