Fillmore East was rock promoter Bill Graham's rock venue on Second Avenue near East 6th Street in the (at the time) Lower East Side neighborhood, now called the East Village neighborhood of the borough of Manhattan of New York City. It was open from March 8, 1968 to June 27, 1971 and featured some of the biggest acts in rock music at the time. The Fillmore East was a companion to Graham's Fillmore Auditorium, and its successor, the Fillmore West, in San Francisco, Graham's home base.
The theatre at 105 Second Avenue that became the Fillmore East was originally built as a Yiddish theater in 1925-26 – designed by Harrison Wiseman in the Medieval Revival style – at a time when the section of Second Avenue was known as the "Yiddish Theater District" and the "Jewish Rialto" because of the numerous theatres that catered to a Yiddish-speaking audience. Called the Commodore Theater, and independently operated, it eventually was taken over by Loews Inc. and became a movie theater, the Loews Commodore. It later became the Village Theatre. When Graham took over the theatre in 1967, it had fallen into disrepair. Despite the deceptively small marquee and façade, the theater had a capacity of almost 2,700.
The Allman Brothers Band was an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman (slide guitar and lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, keyboards, songwriting), as well as Dickey Betts (lead guitar, vocals, songwriting), Berry Oakley (bass guitar), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (drums). While the band has been called the principal architects of southern rock, they also incorporate elements of blues, jazz, and country music, and their live shows have jam band-style improvisation and instrumentals.
The group's first two studio releases stalled commercially, but their 1971 live release, At Fillmore East, represented an artistic and commercial breakthrough. The album features extended renderings of their songs "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Post", and is often considered among the best live albums ever made. Group leader Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident later that year, and the band dedicated Eat a Peach (1972) in his memory, a dual studio/live album that cemented the band's popularity. Following the motorcycle death of bassist Berry Oakley later that year, the group recruited keyboardist Chuck Leavell and bassist Lamar Williams for 1973's Brothers and Sisters, which, combined with the hit single, "Ramblin' Man", placed the group at the forefront of 1970s rock music. Internal turmoil overtook the band soon after; the group dissolved in 1976, re-formed briefly at the end of the decade with additional personnel changes, and dissolved again in 1982.

For this second U.S. Tour of 1970, the band was still promoting their fantastic John Barleycorn LP, but had recently expanded the trio into a quartet again, with the addition of Blind Faith member Rick Grech on bass. I was in Madrid last week so I did not get to play any guitar. I love sharing my Spanish experiences with my subscribers. This is a little video of a few things we did while in Madrid. I finally had the pleasure of eating paella made by my son-in-law's mother. It was wonderful. Also, I love mazapan, so we made a special trip to Toledo where they make it year round. Normally, it is just available during the Christmas season. Toledo is a beautiful city so go there if you ever go to Spain. We show you a little of Toledo by driving down the very narrow streets. The weather was pretty funky. I did not know it could rain so much in Madrid. It is usually pretty dry. Here is a link to my son-in-law's video he did of the same trip to Toledo so it has a little different perspective: https...

This was a really cool trip. The Penafiel Castle built in the 10th century, is the coolest Spanish castle I have ever seen although we did not go inside. Protos Wines are some of the best in Spain. They started in 1927 so this is their 90th Anniversary. Check out the stork's nest at 2:25 We get to the winery at 5:00 Be sure to check out the traditional Spanish lunch at El Lagar De San Vicente starting at 12:00 and the walk through the town trying to find the restaurant starting at 7:00 I think there is a wine museum in the castle now. The extensive tunnel network below the castle is perfect for keeping the wine barrels at the perfect temperature and humidity. Most of the tunnels were dug by Protos but they did find some ancient ones that were built when the castle was built. ...
