Iran: Tehran and Side-Trips
As he's done with previous programs on Israel, Egypt, and Eastern Turkey, Rick takes us beyond Europe to a place that's rich with history...and mystery. In this first of two half-hour shows on Iran, Rick dodges traffic in Tehran, enjoys the tranquility of a nearby village, and encounters both anti-American propaganda and a warm welcome from everyday Iranians.

Persian Meatballs, Traditional Teahouses, and the Perfect Kebab: MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran (Part 2/3)
For our second installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, Gelareh visits Nayeb, a white-tablecloth restaurant that's been serving up succulent kebabs in Iran for over 120 years—and even got its initial footing in the bazaar. Their signature dish, koobedih, is a spiced meat kebab dipped in onion juice and cooked over an open flame, served with rice, somagh (sour powdered sumac) butter, and raw eg

When it comes to Tehran, it's impossible to avoid politics and easy to overlook the Iranian city's thriving culinary scene. In our first installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, our host Gelareh Kiazand introduces us to the bustling street food offerings in the city.
We begin our journey at the capital city's Grand Bazaar, since that's where commodities first arrive. Gelareh beelines for the market's food stands, where she samples dried fruits and nuts while waiting out the line at Moslem Restaurant, frequented by up to 5,000 kebab connoisseurs daily—well worth it for her favorite tah chin. At the more modest and bygone Tajrish Bazaar, she's the proverbial kid in a candy store, wading through copper and carpet vendors in search of sweet snacks, such as grape molasses and lavasak (fruit leather).

In an industry where flash and flesh rule, Sadaf is an Iranian fashion designer who is finding inspiration in the restrictions and laws that seek to mandate the limits of her creativity.
"Tehran Unveiled" profiles four bold and creative women who reveal how the Iranian government views their art and how oppressive restrictions curb self-expression. Their desire to follow their dreams surpasses their need for well-being, and as a result, these courageous women are risking their livelihoods to tell their stories and change the conversation about a "woman's place" in Islamic society, Iran, and the world.

Tehran Persian: تهران – Tehrān is the capital of Iran and Tehran Province. With a population of around 9 million in the city and 16 million in the wider metropolitan area,[3] Tehran is the largest city and urban area of Iran, the second largest city in Western Asia, and the 3rd largest in the Middle East. It is ranked 29th in the world by the population of its metropolitan area.[4]
In the Classical era, part of the present-day city of Tehran was occupied by a Median city which in the Avesta occurs as Rhaga.[5] It was destroyed by the Mongols in the early 13th century, and remains now as a city in Tehran Province, located towards the south end of the modern-day city of Tehran.
Tehran was first chosen as the capital of Iran by Agha Mohammad Khan of the Qajar dynasty in 1796, in order to remain in close reach of Iran's territories in the Caucasus, at that time still part of Iran, and to avoid vying factions of previous Iranian dynasties. The capital has been moved several times throughout the history, and Tehran is the 32nd national capital of Iran.
The city was the seat of Qajars and Pahlavis, the two last imperial dynasties of the country. It is home to many historical monuments, such as the royal complexes of Golestan, Saadabad, and Niavaran, as well as the country's most important governmental buildings of the modern period.
Large scale demolition and rebuilding began in the 1920s, and Tehran has been subject of mass migration of people from all over Iran, since the 20th century.[6]
The most famous landmarks of the city include the Azadi Tower, a memorial built during the Pahlavi period, and the Milad Tower, the world's 17th tallest freestanding structure which was built in 2007. The newly built Tabiat Bridge is considered as the 3rd symbol of the city.[7]
Majority of the people of Tehran are Persian-speaking people who identify themselves as Persians,[8][9] and roughly 99% of the population understand and speak Persian; but there are also populations of other Iranian ethnicities such as Azerbaijanis, Armenians, Lurs, and Kurds who speak Persian as their second language.[10]
Tehran is served by the Mehrabad and Khomeini international airports, a central railway station, the rapid transit rail system of Tehran Metro, as well as trolleybus and BRT systems, and has a huge network of highways.
There have been plans to relocate Iran's capital from Tehran to another area; due mainly to air pollution and the city's exposure to earthquakes.

For our second installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, Gelareh visits Nayeb, a white-tablecloth restaurant that's been serving up succulent kebabs in Iran for over 120 years—and even got its initial footing in the bazaar. Their signature dish, koobedih, is a spiced meat kebab dipped in onion juice and cooked over an open flame, served with rice, somagh (sour powdered sumac) butter, and raw egg.
After dining with Nayeb's fifth generation, great-great-great-great-granddaughter Sogol, Gelareh heads to the Baghe Saba Teahouse—a cultural hub akin to a Parisian salon that was once a mens-only enclave but now welcomes families. There, Gelarah is greeted by a buffet of salads, stuffed eggplant, barley soup, and every size of sabzi koofteh (Persian meatballs).

My name's Michael and I'm the Marketing Manager for Wild Frontiers. I'm here at the magnificent site of Persepolis in Iran. I've been in Iran for two weeks now and so far I've been enchanted by this fascinating country.
CITIES
The capital Tehran is most people's starting point, and in this busy city you can see ostentatious ornaments from the royal household in the crown jewels museum, and wander around the Shah's old residence, Golestan Palace. Just north of Tehran you can visit the Elburz Mountains for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer.
But the real highlights lie elsewhere. In the off-the-beaten-track city of Yazd you'll find a cityscape dotted with the ingenious wind tunnels -- which could be described as the world's first air-conditioning system - the ancient Zoroastrian site of the Towers of Silence, the magnificent Friday Mosque and a number of beautiful palaces and gardens.
Shiraz meanwhile is a lovely university town, known as the city of poets, wine, literature and flowers, and is a real delight. I particularly loved visiting the atmospheric tomb of the Persian poet Hafez. In the evenings it has a magical atmosphere as people gather to read poetry and celebrate the life of this revered poet. Shiraz is also blessed with numerous picturesque mosques and beautiful gardens.
The jewel in the Persian crown is undoubtedly the beautiful city of Esfahan, which has one of the largest squares in the world in the breathtaking Naqsh Jahan Square and probably the most stunning Islamic architecture found anywhere. Esfahan is unbelievably picturesque, with its famed bridges and lively bazaars.
ANCIENT SITES
Iran has a long and rich history, with the Persian Empire at one point ruling over 44% of the world's population. The country is home to some world-class archaeological sites, including the rock-carved tombs of Nagsh e Rostam, where Darius the great is buried, and the spectacular Achamaenid palace complex at Persepolis. This ancient palace was built by Darius the Great to celebrate events such as the Persian New Year, when representatives from the four corners of the empire would congregate. This vast site merits at least a couple of hours to explore the ruins and bas reliefs.
SCENERY
But it's not only about the cities and ancient sites, the scenery of Iran is an unexpected highlight. From beautiful picnic spots such as the Murgon Waterfalls, to fertile valleys in the Bavanat Mountains, where you can encounter Kashqai nomads and see a way of life that has changed little over centuries. In the Dena mountains around Yasuj you'll find an alpine scenery of snow-capped mountains, lakes and streams. It is well worth spending some time away from the better-known cultural sites to explore this lesser-known side of Iran. It really is a beautiful country.
THE PEOPLE
The people of Iran are another real highlight, being welcoming and keen to engage in conversation about everything from politics to football. You are likely to be surrounded by schoolkids asking you questions, offered tea and invited to share in picnics with the locals pretty much wherever you go.
If ever a people were misrepresented by a regime it would be the Iranians. Thanks to a baby boom in the 80's, over 60% of its 70 million population are aged under 30. This generation is well-educated, worldly, and exposed to global media through the internet. Walking around the streets -- which are incidentally very safe - this certainly feels like a nation on the cusp of change.
So forget about any preconceptions you may have about safety, security, or the welcome you'll receive in Iran. I've found the people to be the friendliest and most hospitable I've found anywhere in the world. So check out Wild Frontiers' tours to Iran and discover for yourself this fascinating country.

In this episode of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, Gelareh feeds tankfuls of paddlefish and beluga—valued at up to $35,000 per fish—at the nation's first home of farm-raised caviar, Shilat Fish Farm. Eventually, these prized bottom-dwellers will be killed and harvested in a factory in Northern Iran, but currently they live in conditions similar to their species' natural ocean habitat.
In the spirit of farm-to-table fine dining, Gelareh gets the royal treatment at Li Dona, a members-only restaurant and jazz lounge. She learns that when it comes to fish eggs, bigger is not necessarily better, as she tastes spoonfuls of "black gold" on toast served with butter, onion, egg, pepper, and lemon juice.

Welcome to Toronto, the largest city in Canada and a hub of trade and culture.
“The City That Works” is full of a can-do spirit that is reflected in its buildings. From the famous CN Tower to the castle-like Casa Loma, there’s all sorts of eye candy for the architecture enthusiast. Your Toronto tour should include a trip to Edward Gardens in Hyde Park, or one of the many other green spaces located in the city. Take a bike ride along the trails, or enjoy a picnic while the local chipmunks look on. Don’t drop anything; they’ll grab it.
Your Toronto sightseeing can continue at the Harborfront Center. Go for a walk along the marina, or grab a pint at a brewhouse. And no trip to Toronto is complete without a visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame, so make sure you’ve got your team paraphernalia in order before you venture inside. Looking for shopping? You’ll find the Underground City and Kensington Market ready to welcome you and your credit card – or several credit cards, as the case may be. After a day of madcap purchasing, why not stock up on fresh, healthy food at the St. Lawrence Market? You’ll have worked up quite an appetite for delicious local produce.
Before you leave, head to Niagara Falls and take in the spectacle of nature’s power. You’ll never forget the sight and sound of all that water pouring over the falls, nor will you ever forget your trip to Toronto.

"Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was in touch with US Secretary of State Kerry," the Guard's naval commander, Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, said in an interview broadcast live on state

TEHRAN, IRAN — The crews of two small US Navy ships were detained in the Persian Gulf by Iran on Tuesday, although the Pentagon said it expected them to be returned soon.
The two riverine command boats carrying 10 naval crew were travelling from Kuwait to Bahrain on a training exercise when the incident occurred.
US naval officials said one of the boats appeared to have suffered a mechanical problem which led the boats to drift into Iranian territorial waters around Farsi Island.
Iran's Farsi news agency said the crews had been taken to an Iranian naval base on the island after illegally straying more than a mile into its waters, and accused the crews of 'snooping.'
After high-level communication between the two sides following the soldiers' detention, US officials said they expected the crews to be released "in the next few hours."
The detention comes during a period of increased tension between the US and Iran just days before the implementation of a crucial deal on Iran's nuclear program, with Iranian forces recently launching rockets that passed within 1,500 yards of the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.

Queen Noor of Jordan ( born Lisa Najeeb Halaby on 23 August 1951) is an American woman who is the widow of King Hussein of Jordan. She is also known as Noor Al-Hussein.
As of 2011, she is president of the United World Colleges movement and an advocate of the anti-nuclear weapons proliferation campaign Global Zero.
She is the daughter of Najeeb Halaby and Doris Carlquist (Swedish descent). Her father was an aviator, airline executive, and government official. He served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Truman administration, before being appointed by John F. Kennedy to head the Federal Aviation Administration. Najeeb Halaby also had a private-sector career, serving as CEO of Pan American World Airways from 1969 to 1972.
After she graduated, Lisa Halaby moved to Australia, where she worked for a firm that specialized in planning new towns. She became increasingly interested in the Middle East and immediately accepted a job offer from a British architectural firm that had been employed to redesign Tehran, Iran.
In 1976 she moved back to the United States. However, she accepted a job offer from Managing Director of Arab Air Services, which was founded by her father, who was commissioned by the Jordanian government to redesign their airlines. She became Director of Facilities Planning and Design of the airline he founded.
In 1977, she was working for Royal Jordanian Airlines, in which capacity she attended various high-profile social events as the Director of Facilities Planning and Design. This is where she met Hussein of Jordan for the first time on the development of the Queen Alia International Airport. The airport was named after Queen Alia, Hussein's third wife, who died in a helicopter crash the same year. Halaby and the king became friends while he was still mourning the death of his wife.
Halaby and King Hussein wed on 15 June 1978 in Amman, becoming his fourth wife and Queen of Jordan.
Upon her marriage she accepted her husband's Sunni Islamic religion and the royal name Noor Al-Hussein ("Light of Hussein").

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi defended the Iran nuclear deal even as tensions between Washington and Tehran flared over the detention of 10 American sailors, arguing that "this is proof that building a diplomatic relationship with Iran, at least in terms of the nuclear treaty, has served us well."
Pelosi framed the return of the sailors on Wednesday morning after a short detention as a vindication of the Obama administration's efforts to develop a diplomatic relationship with the longtime U.S. foe.
"The fact is they are free. They're back. It happened quickly," Pelosi told CNN's Chris Cuomo on "New Day." "And I think the diplomacy involved in the treaty and the fact that the implementation day is imminent all weighed in to make this something that was resolved as quickly as possible."

Iranian state television has shown the moment 10 American sailors were arrested after their boats allegedly strayed into Iranian waters.
The footage shows the Americans kneeling on board a US-flagged vessel with their hands behind their heads.
Additional footage showed the sailors sitting on the floor in a room and eating.
The nine men and one woman were interrogated and held overnight on Farsi Island in the Gulf, where the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) have a base.
They were allowed to leave unharmed on Wednesday, both Iran and the US confirmed.
US Secretary of State John Kerry thanked Iran for its "cooperation" in the matter, which occurred just days before Tehran is expected to comply with the terms set in last summer's nuclear deal.
Delivering a speech on US foreign policy, Mr Kerry said the peaceful resolution was a "testament to the critical role that diplomacy plays" in keeping the US safe.
The Pentagon said the US Navy was investigating how the sailors came to be in Iranian waters.
It lost contact with the patrol boats as they moved through the Gulf between Kuwait and Bahrain on Tuesday.
Both Washington and Tehran have blamed the incident on "mechanical problems" following conflicting messages from the Iranians, who initially accused the sailors of spying.
In a statement posted online, Iran's Revolutionary Guard said: "After determining that their entry into Iran's territorial waters was not intentional and their apology, the detained American sailors were released in international waters."
Footage aired on Iranian TV showed one US sailor issuing an apology while still in custody.
"It was a mistake that was our fault and we apologise for our mistake," said the sailor identified as a commanding officer.
US Vice President Joe Biden, however, told the CBS This Morning news programme that Washington would not apologise.
He said: "There's nothing to apologise for. When you have a problem with the boat you apologise the boat had a problem?
"No, and there was no looking for any apology. This was just standard nautical practice."
State Department spokesman John Kirby echoed Mr Biden's comments on Twitter, saying there was "absolutely zero truth" to rumours that Mr Kerry apologised to Iran.
"Nothing to apologize for", Mr Kirby tweeted.
The tension rattled nerves days ahead of the expected implementation of July's landmark nuclear accord with Tehran, which Mr Kerry helped broker with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif.
The White House credited new lines of communications established with Tehran during the nuclear negotiations as key to securing the sailors' quick release.
Mr Kerry called Mr Zarif immediately on learning of the sailors' detention, a senior US official told the AP news agency.
White House chief of staff Denis McDonough said the relationship between the two diplomats was key to resolving the matter, and US defence chief Ash Carter thanked Mr Kerry for his efforts.
President Barack Obama was briefed on the situation just hours before he delivered his final State of the Union address to Congress.
Tuesday's incident follows Iran's launch of a test rocket near US warships passing through the Strait of Hormuz in late December.
In March 2007, Iranian forces seized 15 British servicemen in the mouth of a waterway separating Iran and Iraq.

TEHRAN — Iran’s release of 10 United States Navy sailors on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after they were detained on the Persian Gulf, is being hailed in both countries as a sign that their relations have evolved since the signing of the nuclear accord last summer.
Secretary of State John Kerry thanked the Iranians “for their cooperation in swiftly resolving this matter” and suggested that the quick resolution of the issue was a product of the nearly daily back-and-forth that now takes place between Washington and Tehran, after three decades of hostility and stony silence.
“That this issue was resolved peacefully and efficiently is a testament to the critical role diplomacy plays in keeping our country safe, secure and strong,” he said in a statement Wednesday morning.
The crew members of two patrol boats were detained on Tuesday after what Iranian state news media described as “trespassing” in Iranian waters near a major naval base. Similar episodes in the past, like the seizure of British marines in 2007, have developed into prolonged standoffs that further alienated Tehran and the West.

Iran was waiting for an apology before negotiating the release of several US naval officers, stated Navy Commander Admiral of the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (IRGC) Ali Fadavi released during an interview on Iranian state TV in Tehran, Tuesday. The commander's comments come after Iran's Revolutionary Guards seized two US boats that strayed into the Islamic Republic's territorial waters earlier in the day.
SOT, Ali Fadavi, Navy Commander Admiral of the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution (Farsi): "Almost from the beginning there were diplomatic calls and we were in contact with the Foreign Ministry and Mr. Zarif. It was clear that Mr. Kerry contacted Mr. Zarif and had requested freedom [for the sailors] and Mr. Zarif had a strong and powerful stance that they were in our territorial waters and that they should apologise for this. Of course, this process will not take long and Iran's Revolutionary Guards Navy will act on it upon receipt of an order from its superiors."

Iran has called for Washington to apologise after 10 US sailors were arrested on Tuesday for “violating” its waters. Tehran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard also cast doubt on reports of their prompt release.
"Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was in touch with US Secretary of State Kerry," the Guard's naval commander, Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, said in an interview broadcast live on state television.
"Zarif took a firm stance as the sailors had violated Iran's territorial waters and asked the United States for an apology," Fadavi said.
US officials had earlier sounded optimistic that the sailors – nine men and a woman – would be transferred to a US ship on Wednesday morning local time.
Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told AP that the Riverine boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the US lost contact with them.
US officials said some type of mechanical trouble with one of the boats caused them to drift into Iranian territorial waters near the island, where they were picked up by Iran.
The semi-official Iranian news agency, FARS, said the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s navy had detained 10 foreign forces, believed to be Americans, and said the sailors were trespassing in Iranian waters.
“We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly,” Cook said.
Hours later, a spokesman for the Revolutionary Guards dismissed talk of their prompt release as speculation.
"What others say about the sailors' prompt release is their speculation, and I don't confirm or deny it," Ramazan Sharif said in an interview with Tasnim news.
"If, during the interrogation, we find out that they were on an intelligence gathering mission, we will treat them differently," he added.

Iran was holding 10 U.S. Navy sailors and their two small boats that drifted into Iranian waters after experiencing mechanical problems. Iran accused the sailors of trespassing but American officials said Tehran has assured them that the crew and vessels would be returned safely and promptly.
The sailors, nine men and one woman, were being held overnight at an Iranian base on Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf, and were expected to be transferred to a U.S. ship in the region on Wednesday morning local time. Officials said they believe the U.S. had spoken to one of the crew, and all 10 were fine and uninjured.
Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told The Associated Press that the Riverine boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the U.S. lost contact with them.
U.S. officials said that the incident happened near Farsi Island in the middle of the Gulf. They said some type of mechanical trouble with one of the boats caused them to drift into Iranian territorial waters near the island, and they were picked up by Iran.

Be Like Others (also known as Transsexual in Iran) is a 2008 documentary film written and directed by Tanaz Eshaghian about transsexuals in Iran. It explores issues of gender and sexuality while following the personal stories of some of the patients at a Tehran clinic.
Although homosexual relationships are illegal (punishable by death) in Iran, sex reassignment operations are permitted. In 1983, spiritual leader Ayatollah Khomeini passed a fatwa allowing sex-change operations as a cure for “diagnosed transsexuals”. Be Like Others shows the experiences of male and female patients at Dr. Bahram Mir-Jalali’s Mirdamad Surgical Centre, a sex-reassignment clinic in Tehran.
One of them is Ali Askar, a 24 year-old man who faces harassment from other men due to his feminine appearance and behaviour. He does not want to become a woman but sees no other options for him in Iranian society.
He decides to go ahead with the surgery despite death threats from his father and finds support from Vida, a post-operative transsexual he meets at the clinic. By the end of the film, Ali has become a woman named Negar. She has been disowned by her family, experienced depression and has had to work as a prostitute. 20 year-old Anoosh is another young man who has been ostracised due to his femininity.
His boyfriend feels more comfortable when Anoosh dresses as a woman, and in contrast to Ali, Anoosh’s mother is supportive of his desire to change sex. The end of the film shows Anoosh — now Anahita — happy and engaged to her boyfriend.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has ruled out foreign intervention in resolving the Syrian conflict.
Rouhani made the remark in a joint press conference with visiting Austrian President Heinz Fischer in Tehran. He stressed that Iran will negotiate with any country that can help in restoring peace and establishing democracy in Syria. Rouhani said the most important thing is the resolution of the conflict and the return of Syrian refugees to their homes. The Iranian president also hailed the friendly relations between Tehran and Vienna. For his part, President Fischer said the resolution of Iran's nuclear dispute has opened a new chapter in its relations with other world countries. He said the two sides are committed to expanding relations in all fields and have agreed to cooperate in fighting terrorism.

On August 23, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond traveled to Iran to reopen the UK embassy in Tehran and to meet a number of Iranian officials.
Following the deal between Iran and the P5+1, different countries rushed to send their diplomatic and economic delegations to Tehran and on the other hand, in order to catch up with its European rivals in Continental Europe, the British decided to bury the hatchet with Iran and offered to resume relations with Iran.
In November 2011, hundreds of angry students raided the UK embassy because they believed it kept meddling in their country’s affairs. Similarly, the British government shuttered Iran's embassy in London immediately after that.
British officials’ snooping in Iran goes back to the distant past such as separating Afghanistan from Iran, the Reuters Concession, the Talbot contract, opposing the nationalization of the Iranian oil industry, supporting Saddam and many other examples such as the unrest that followed the 2009 presidential election in Iran.
When the British foreign secretary entered Iran, he focused primarily on three main issues; firstly, he tried to induce this notion to Iranians that bygones are bygones; that is, he implicitly called on Iranians to forget the past with regard to the UK's mischief in Iran in the past.
The second issue which he focused upon was that he voiced the readiness of the British government as well as other western powers to engage in cooperation with Iran to address emerging matters of concern in the world like regional terrorism, the Islamic awakening, the ongoing crises in the Middle East and the like.
Thirdly, the trip is hoped to bring about positive economic and political outcomes for both Iran and the UK favored by both and expected to significantly influence their mutual ties.

Rouhani gave assurances that Iran will never invade any other country but will defend its sovereignty with full force in case of any aggression. Rouhani made the comments during a ceremony commemorating the start of the Sacred Defense Week. The event marks the thirty fifth anniversary of Iraq’s war against Iran.
