Can vegans die of the same diseases that plague people on the Western standard diet of meat, dairy and eggs? Sure! Dr. Michael Greger tells us why and how to prevent this.
We can prevent many illnesses and diseases as a vegan. As a vegan we are not full proof. In today's society because of washing our produce, chlorinating our water supply and soil being deficient we may need to supplement certain nutrients.

When Michael Greger was a child, his grandmother became one of the first people in the country to be cured of severe heart disease by a revolutionary new program that used as it's primary weapon something few scientists or researchers were considering at the time -- food. From nearly dead to walking 10 miles a day in just a few weeks, the treatment gave another 31 years of life to a grandmother of six children. Every year I scour the world’s scholarly literature on clinical nutrition, pulling together what I find to be the most interesting, practical, and groundbreaking science on how to best feed ourselves and our families. I start with the 12,000 or so papers published annually on human nutrition and, thanks to a crack team of volunteers (and now staff!), I'm able to whittle those down to about 3,000 studies, which are downloaded, categorized, read, analyzed, and churned into a few hundred short videos. This allows me to post new videos and articles every day, year-round, to NutritionFacts.org. This certainly makes the site unique. There’s no other science-based source for free daily updates on the latest discoveries in nutrition. The problem is that the amount of information can be overwhelming.
Currently I have videos covering 1,814 nutrition topics (http://nutritionfacts.org/topics/). Where do you even begin? Many have expressed their appreciation for the breadth of material, but asked that I try to distill it into a coherent summary of how best to use diet to prevent and treat chronic disease. I took this feedback to heart and in 2012 developed Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/uprooting-the-leading-causes-of-death/), which explored the role diet may play in preventing, arresting, and even reversing our top 15 killers. Not only did it rise to become one of the Top 10 Most Popular Videos of 2012 (http://nutritionfacts.org/2012/12/29/top-10-most-popular-videos-of-the-year/), it remains my single most viewed video to date, watched over a million times (NutritionFacts.org is now up to more than a million hits a month!).
In 2013 I developed the sequel, More Than an Apple a Day: Combating Common Diseases (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/more-than-an-apple-a-day-preventing-our-most-common-diseases/), in which I explored the role diet could play in treating some of our most common conditions. I've been presenting it around the country (http://www.DrGreger.org/dates.html) over the past year and it ended up #1 on our Top 10 Most Popular Videos of 2013 (http://nutritionfacts.org/2014/01/09/top-10-most-popular-videos-of-2013/).

Is a calorie a calorie? Does eating the same amounts of calories from different foods play a role with weight loss?
Bananiac interviews Dr. Michael Greger if calories from whole plant foods,like fruits, are the same as calories from meat. The standard procedure that is offered from the dietetics and medical community is to restrict calories to lose weight. This seems to work for many people since it causes them to "eat less crap". BUT this is not sustainable in the long run. Restricting your calories will cause you to binge the next day.
There are multiple ways to lose weight, like Dr. Greger mentions, but not all of them are healthy. What we want are sustainable way that will allow to be satiated, while at the same time allow us to reach our weight loss goals. Restricting calories WILL NOT WORK! It's kind of like abstinence programs attempting to restrict teen pregnancies. Good education must be used for any goals we try to achieve.
Foods to focus on that will help you reach your goals are whole plant foods. Foods that are not drenched in oil and salt. A diet centered around whole plant foods will leave you satiated without having to worry about eating too much. In fact, you have to eat MORE on a whole food plant based diet than you would on a standard American diet.

In a recent interview with Dr. Michael Greger from NutritionFacts.org, Bananiac asked Dr. Greger if it's a possibility that calories, in general, are not the problem but if it's the fat that is causing people to gain weight. Dr. Greger says that studies done one WHOLE plant foods rich in fat like nuts, seeds, avocados, and coconuts actually DON'T cause weight gain. He claims that the macronutrient ratio is not so much of a problem for people trying to lose weight but the source of where people are getting their fat calories. It makes a HUGE difference if that fat source one consumes is from animal fat which would contain high amounts of saturated fat & cholesterol versus a natural plant food like nuts & seeds.
Now don't go NUTS with NUTS! Dr. Greger encourages people to eat around a HANDFUL of nuts & seeds. What he promotes is still a low-fat diet even with a handful or two of nuts & seeds.
