This week, Stan Muller teaches you the basics of copyright in the United States. Copyright law is territorial, so we're going to cover the system we know the most about, and that's the US. Stan will talk about what kind of ideas can be copyrighted, who can get a copyright, and what protections the copyright grants. We'll also talk about the always contentious and seemingly ever-growing term of copyright. Stan will also teach you about the low bar for creativity, which means that original work doesn't have to be all that original, and he'll also touch on the problems with copyright in the modern world.

Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights. It is an intellectual property form (like the patent, the trademark, and the trade secret) applicable to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete.[clarification needed]
Copyright initially was conceived as a way for government to restrict printing; the contemporary intent of copyright is to promote the creation of new works by giving authors control of and profit from them. Copyrights are said to be territorial, which means that they do not extend beyond the territory of a specific state unless that state is a party to an international agreement. Today, however, this is less relevant since most countries are parties to at least one such agreement. While many aspects of national copyright laws have been standardized through international copyright agreements, copyright laws of most countries have some unique features. Typically, the duration of copyright is the whole life of the creator plus fifty to a hundred years from the creator's death, or a finite period for anonymous or corporate creations. Some jurisdictions have required formalities to establishing copyright, but most recognize copyright in any completed work, without formal registration. Generally, copyright is enforced as a civil matter, though some jurisdictions do apply criminal sanctions.

Stan will talk about what kind of ideas can be copyrighted, who can get a copyright, and what protections the copyright grants. We'll also talk about the always contentious and seemingly ever-growing term of copyright. Stan will also teach you about the low bar for creativity, which means that original work doesn't have to be all that original, and he'll also touch on the problems with copyright in the modern world.

Copyright Strikes - YouTube New Tool To Stopy Copyright Strikes
0:00 In this video I’m going to reveal to you a new tool that’s been released by YouTube themselves, that shows you what’s going to happen to your video when you put music tracks, say from iTunes or someone like that on your videos. This follows from the video I released last week, where I talked about the content ID and content strikes and copyright in general using music tracks on your videos.
0:56 So, it seems that YouTube have been looking over my shoulder as to what videos I’ve been coming up with and then putting in tools to help people with the things that I’ve been trying to help you with.
1:07 So, I’m going to go over to the computer, now, and I’m going to show you this brand new tool to show you what’s going to happen to your videos, what the rights are, etc., etc of using music tracks on your videos, what’s going to happen.
1:21 Here we are in the dashboard of one my channels and you get there by going up to the top clicking on your icon and clicking on Creator Studio. 0:00 In this video I’m going to reveal to you a new tool that’s been released by YouTube themselves, that shows you what’s going to happen to your video when you put music tracks, say from iTunes or someone like that on your videos. This follows from the video I released last week, where I talked about the content ID and content strikes and copyright in general using music tracks on your videos.
0:56 So, it seems that YouTube have been looking over my shoulder as to what videos I’ve been coming up with and then putting in tools to help people with the things that I’ve been trying to help you with.
1:07 So, I’m going to go over to the computer, now, and I’m going to show you this brand new tool to show you what’s going to happen to your videos, what the rights are, etc., etc of using music tracks on your videos, what’s going to happen.
1:21 Here we are in the dashboard of one my channels and you get there by going up to the top clicking on your icon and clicking on Creator Studio.
