Hatteras Island (historically, Croatoan Island) is a barrier island located off the North Carolina coast. Dividing the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound, it runs parallel to the coast, forming a bend at Cape Hatteras. It is part of North Carolina's Outer Banks and includes the towns of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras. It contains the largest part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It is almost entirely in Dare County, North Carolina, but there is a very small sliver of about 45 acres (0.18 km2) which extends southwest into Hyde County.
The island is one of the longest in the contiguous United States, measuring 42 miles (68 km) along a straight line from end to end, or roughly 50 miles (80 km) along the curve of the land.
Hatteras Island is known for sport fishing, surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding, and is known as "The blue marlin capital of the world."
Accommodations range from hotels and condos to luxurious oceanfront cottages. Hatteras Island is often used for destination weddings, family reunions, and special events.
North Carolina (i/ˌnɔːrθ kærəˈlaɪnə/) is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. The state borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. North Carolina is the 28th most extensive and the 9th most populous of the 50 United States. North Carolina is known as the Tar Heel State and the Old North State.
North Carolina is composed of 100 counties. Its two largest metropolitan areas are among the top ten fastest-growing in the country: its capital, Raleigh, and its largest city, Charlotte. In the past five decades, North Carolina's economy has undergone a transition from reliance upon tobacco, textiles, and furniture-making to a more diversified economy with engineering, energy, biotechnology, and finance sectors.
North Carolina has a wide range of elevations, from sea level on the coast to 6,684 feet (2,037 m) at Mount Mitchell, the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi River. The climate of the coastal plains is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the state falls in the humid subtropical climate zone. More than 300 miles (500 km) from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state has a subtropical highland climate.
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.
Cape Point is a promontory at the southeast corner of the Cape Peninsula, which is a mountainous and scenic landform that runs north-south for about thirty kilometres at the extreme southwestern tip of the African continent in the Republic of South Africa. Table Mountain and the city of Cape Town are close to the northern extremity of the same peninsula. The cape is located at 34°21′26″S 18°29′51″E / 34.35722°S 18.49750°E / -34.35722; 18.49750Coordinates: 34°21′26″S 18°29′51″E / 34.35722°S 18.49750°E / -34.35722; 18.49750, about 2.3 kilometres (1.4 mi) east and a little north of the Cape of Good Hope on the southwest corner. Although these two rocky capes are very well known, neither cape is actually the southernmost point of the mainland of Africa; that is Cape Agulhas, approximately 150 kilometres (93 mi) to the east-southeast.
The peak above Cape Point is higher than that above the Cape of Good Hope. The rugged sandstone (Table Mountain sandstone) ridge that rises from Cape Point at sea level develops into two peaks. There is a major peak that dominates the skyline locally but there is also a smaller peak about 100 m (328 ft) further south. The higher peak has the old lighthouse on the top. The Flying Dutchman Funicular runs from a car park to the north up to slightly below the level of the old lighthouse and a short flight of steps leads to a viewing platform around the base of the lighthouse. From the end of the railway a second path leads to the lower peak.

"Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Tour" is a segment of Carl White's Life in the Carolinas, which aired in syndication March 21, 2015 We travel today with Carl to Hatteras Island, home of the world famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Chris Cabral, Park Ranger, gives us a guided tour that begins with a 257 step walk up the lighthouse. There are eight landings separated by 31 steps. These provided a place to rest for the original lighthouse keepers who had to haul about seventy pounds of oil to the top of the lighthouse to keep the light on. Cape Hatteras is nicknamed the "Graveyard of the Atlantic," and with good reason. Two major ocean currents meet at the cape, dumping a lot of sand. This creates shoals, or sandbars, making the waters treacherous, and many ships have been destroyed over the...

#17 Youtube video How to Do a Sailboat Haul Out and Survey In The boat Yard Randall Burgs The Yacht Buyers Guide We are in the boatyard to survey a Cape Dory 30 behind me in the travel lift. The boat is absolutely a spectacular boat. The Cape Dory 30’s are ocean crossing boats built to the highest standards. Beautifully finished - they are real work orfart. So the surveyor first checks the underwater running gear metals to see if the metal is hard or soft with electrolysis damage. Then he checks the bearing to see if its strong it there's any issues with the bearing. He look for the number on the propeller. He uses a magnet to make sure there's no decomposition in the metal. He will check to see if the propeller the shaft is bent. Next he checks the paddle wheel and the m...

This was our first experience with driving the 2012 Subaru Forester AWD, 2.5 L on the deep sand of Hatteras Island, NC. We "aired down" (reduced the tire pressure) to 18 psi as is recommended to keep from getting stuck when the sand is deep and soft. There is a segment at the end of this video of a stuck vehicle whose driver failed to air down. Once he did and was pulled out, he proceeded fine.

Hatteras is an unincorporated community in Dare County, North Carolina, in the United States. The Outer Banks Island of Hatteras, North Carolina linking it to Frisco, Avon, and Ocracoke just a ferry ride away.
