Ancient Stringed Instrument - Replica being played
Cabinet Secretary for Culture Fiona Hyslop has revealed a small wooden fragment that it is believed comes from a lyre. It has been burnt and broken, but the notches where strings would have been placed are easy to distinguish on the artefact.
Experts believe the remains are of the earliest stringed instrument ever found in Western Europe - dating to more than 2,300 years ago - at an excavation

Ektara is a simple folk instrument. It is used to provide both a drone as well as simple rhytmic accompaniment to folk songs. It may be the oldest stringed instrument in the Indian subcontinent. The ektar is described in ancient Sanskrit texts as the ekatantri vina, literally the "one stringed lute". In Punjab

Đàn Bầu (pronounced [ɗǎn ɓə̌w]; "gourd lute"; ) also đàn độc huyền (or độc huyền cầm ) is a Vietnamese monochord, or one-string guitar!
The word "monochord" means literally "one string." In the monochord, a single stringsis stretched over a sound box. The string is fixed at both ends while a movable bridge alters pitch. Originally, the Dan Bau was made of just 4 parts: a bamboo tube, a wooden rod, a coconut shell half, and a silk string. The string was strung across the bamboo, tied on one end to the rod, which is perpendicularly attached to the bamboo. The coconut shell was attached to the rod, serving as a resonator.

Gorkem Sen releases the second performance video of Yaybahar here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12YdwGtm6ko
Yaybahar is an electric-free, totally acoustic instrument designed by Gorkem Sen. The vibrations from the strings are transmitted via the coiled springs to the frame drums. These vibrations are turned into sound by the membranes which echo back and forth on the coiled springs. This results in an unique listening experience with an hypnotic surround sound.
What you hear in this performance is captured in realtime without any additional effects and with no post audio processing.

How to build a basic acoustic or electric Diddley Bow - great low cost / no cost activity & gift idea for kids 9 years old and up!
The Repairman's Blues - https://youtu.be/2u-MpEMjFyI
Transcript provided for the hearing impaired:
Alright so today on Repairs101 I've got this great project for anyone over the age of about nine years old -- anyone who can tie a knot -- and who can drive a nail into a piece of wood with a hammer can make their own Diddley Bow and the beauty of it is that they can make it with no budget at all -- no money.
Yeah, you can spend some money and make it fancy or you can make it just with junk that you find laying around the streets or the garage or the dump.
OK so the first thing you're going to need is a board. I chose this big heavy piece of fencepost because of its acoustical qualities.
So I started scraping it down and cleaning it up and ripping off the pieces I don't need and pulling the nails.
Then I squared up the ends and cut them off to thirty-six inches.
So I picked this side of it as the face of the instrument because of its wood-grain pattern.
So you're going to need some nails or possibly some screw-hooks.
Maybe the hard part for you will be finding a piece of wire. OK I've got an old guitar string here I'm going to use, some baling wire, some picture framing wire - although, the traditional method is to take the baling wire off an old broom.
Something soft like this copper wire won't work for you -- it will just stretch until it breaks.
Tie the wire down at either end or both ends using a Backhand Hitch.
Go around the nail, pass it under itself, cross over back around the nail and secure it with two half hitches.
Then you're going to need a thick walled glass bottle or a metal box of some kind to use as a resonator.
Diddley Bows are generally played with a stick, like a percussion instrument.
Well it sounded OK but I thought I could do better so I measured up my guitar and carved a little platform off the end of the Diddley Bow. And I was able to pick up this tensioner for just five dollars.
So for the nut of the Diddley Bow you can use just about anything, you know? A piece of antler or bone or a bottle-cap or a rock or a shell. Really, whatever.
Then I threaded a piece of picture framing wire through an old guitar string just to make it long enough to fit the bow.
So I marked the half way point to represent the twelfth fret of the guitar. A quarter of the way between the nut and the bridge is the fifth fret, and a third of the way between the nut and the bridge is the seventh fret.

Cabinet Secretary for Culture Fiona Hyslop has revealed a small wooden fragment that it is believed comes from a lyre. It has been burnt and broken, but the notches where strings would have been placed are easy to distinguish on the artefact.
Experts believe the remains are of the earliest stringed instrument ever found in Western Europe - dating to more than 2,300 years ago - at an excavation on the Island of Skye.
Music archaeologists Dr Graeme Lawson and Dr John Purser studied the fragment which was discovered at High Pasture Cave
Filmed at AOC Archaeology, Edinburgh

Ellen Fullman and the Long String Instrument in performance on March 9, 2013. With area musicians Abby Alwin (cello) and James Cornish (trumpet), and visiting musician Theresa Wong (cello).
Ellen Fullman's work resides between the fields of sound art and music. Since 1981 Fullman has developed the Long String Instrument, an installation of dozens of wires 50 feet or more in length, tuned in Just Intonation and "bowed" with rosin-coated fingers, producing a chorus of minimal organ-like overtones. The instrument combines Fullman's artistic expressions of everyday activities, such as walking, with a unique performance art sensibility. Fullman has developed a specialized notation system to choreograph the performer's movements, exploring sonic events that occur at specific nodal point locations along the string-length of the instrument. She has recorded extensively with this unusual instrument and has collaborated with such other luminary figures as composer Pauline Oliveros, choreographer Deborah Hay, the Kronos Quartet and Keiji Haino.
Fullman has been the recipient of numerous awards, commissions and residencies. Her music was represented in The American Century; Art and Culture, 1950-2000 at The Whitney Museum, and she has performed in venues and festivals in Europe, Japan, and the Americas including: Instal, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Other Minds, the Walker Art Center and Donaueschinger Musiktage. Her release Ort, with Berlin-based collaborator Jörg Hiller, was selected in the top 50 recordings of 2004 by The Wire (London) , and Fluctuations (with trombonist Monique Buzzarté) on Deep Listening was included in The Wire top 50 of 2008.

Old-man playing Ektara, one of India's ancient instruments at Dilli Haat in Delhi.
In Punjab the ektar is known as the tumbi
The construction is very simple, it is nothing more than a gourd which has been penetrated by a stick of bamboo. Another piece of bamboo forms the tuning peg. The bridge is merely a coin, piece of coconut, plastic or similar object. Ektars such as this are common in the south. In the north, their construction is a little more complicated. A membrane is stretched over the gourd and the bridge is placed over the taut membrane.
The term ektar literally means "one string", as such the term is loosely applied to a variety of one-stringed folk instruments. This includes such instruments as the tuntun, katho, anand lahari, and gopichand.
The ektar is very popular in folk music and has a strong rustic connotation. It is very much associated with the saint Mira Bai. The smaller Punjabi version (tumbi) is much associated with the bhangra style of song and dance. Among the Gadaba and Paraja tribes of Orissa, it is known as dudumah and dung-dungi.
