Salem State University is a four-year public University located in Salem, Massachusetts. Salem State University, established in 1854 as Salem Normal School, is located approximately fifteen miles north of Boston, Massachusetts. Salem State enrolls under 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students from 27 states and 57 foreign countries. In 1932 the institution was renamed Salem Teachers College, and from 1968 to 2010 it was known as Salem State College. As of 2013, Salem State enrolled 7,664 undergraduate and 1,637 graduate, full- and part-time students. The university offers Bachelor and Masters Degrees in the Arts and Sciences, Masters of Business Administration, and Post Masters Certificates in more than 40 academic disciplines. In addition, the university also offers Continuing Education courses for credit and non-credit.
Salem State University was founded in 1854 as the Salem Normal School under the guidance of Horace Mann. The Salem Normal School holds the distinction of being the fourth normal school to open in Massachusetts, and only the tenth to open in the United States. Initially, the school was a two-year, post-secondary educational institution reserved for women. In 1892 the school became co-educational by enrolling its first group of male students that September.
A state university system in the United States is a group of public universities supported by an individual state, or a similar entity such as the District of Columbia. These systems constitute the majority of public-funded universities in the country. Each state supports at least one such system.
State university systems should not be confused with federally funded colleges and universities, at which attendance is limited to military personnel and government employees. Members of foreign militaries and governments also attend some schools. These schools include the United States military academies, Naval Postgraduate School, and military staff colleges.
A state university system normally means a single legal entity and administration, but may consist of several institutions, each with its own identity as a university. Some states—such as California and Texas—support more than one such system.
State universities get subsidies from their states. The amount of the subsidy varies from university to university and state to state, but the effect is to lower tuition costs below that of private universities for students from that state or district. As more and more Americans attend college, and private tuition rates increase well beyond the rate of inflation, admission to state universities is becoming more and more competitive.

Students from Winston-Salem State University, Salem College, and Wake Forest University gathered together on February 18, 2016 to seek justice for Kalvin Michael Smith. #FreeKalvinNow Kalvin Michael Smith has been in prison since 1997 for a crime he was nowhere near and knew nothing about. At the time he was 25; today he is 44 and has been locked away from his father, mother, sisters and brothers, and his children for 18 years. He has always maintained his innocence; passed a police-administered polygraph test; and refused to plead guilty in exchange for, according to Smith, a promise that he could return home in 24 months.
