After several days of heavy rain on already saturated ground, the River Aire (like many rivers in Northern England) broke its banks in several places in Leeds city centre (as well as elsewhere). This film was taken from a walk beginning at 15:40 next to Leeds Railway Station on Princes Square and ending just shortly after 18:20 on East Street (A61).
The film features views of the River Aire at full flow and in flood: at Leeds Station Southern Entrance; from Victoria Bridge; from behind Asda House; on Meadow Lane; on Water Lane; at Bridge End; from Leeds Bridge; from Riverside Court; from Centenary Bridge; at Brewery Place; along Dock Street; from behind Oracle; from Crown Point Bridge; along East Street; through Turlow Court; and most dramatically at the junction of East Street (A61) and Marsh Lane.
At 11:50 there is a barge which has become wedged under a balcony / walkway, lifting the balcony / walkway above it. This is just under Centenary Bridge, opposite Oracle Bar.
According to the Environment Agency, the River Aire went on to reach 2.93 metres at Crown Point at 23:30. It's typical height is between 0.53 and 1.35 metres.
A Yorkshire Evening Post article about the flooding can be found here: http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/latest-news/top-stories/picture-special-leeds-remains-on-red-alert-as-flood-warnings-issued-for-city-centre-1-7644085 .

Hotel Review: Novotel, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England - March 2015
I stayed one night at the Novotel, Sheffield in March, 2015. It was a Saturday night, I booked a double room for two people with Booking.com for £79.00 (room only). The advertised breakfast price on Booking.com was £13.95, which we were not prepared to pay, however, upon check-in breakfast was offered at £9.95 - if booked before midnight. We decided to go with that option. If you are using Booking

At the eastern edge of the National Park the land meets the North Sea. For thousands of years rain, ice, wind and waves have carved and shaped this coastline into the scenery we see today. Here you will find sandy beaches, rocky shores, towering cliffs, steep wooded valleys or 'wykes', sheltered bays and fascinating villages.
Along this coastline there are many seaside villages with higgledy piggledy cottages and narrow, winding streets clinging onto the cliffs. The villages developed because of the fishing industry. There are only a few fishermen left now but many local people make a living from hotels, cafés, shops and other services for the tourists who visit the coast. Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes are popular villages (or honey pot sites) for visitors.

If you are using Booking.com to book a room here, go for the room only option, and pay for breakfast upon arrival.
The hotel is very well situated in Sheffield city centre, a 5-7 minute uphill walk from Sheffield railway station. You can enter from the Station side via the lower ground floor, or from the Winter Gardens side on the upper ground floor. If entering on the lower ground floor there are both stairs and a lift for getting upstairs.
Note on the lower ground floor there is also a fitness suite and swimming pool - it is a very small pool, and the changing rooms are tiny, so it's probably better to get changed in your room. You need to get a keycard from reception to unlock the doors to the fitness area and swimming pool.
Reception is large, colourful and bright, and the reception staff were all friendly and helpful. We were told upon check-in that an event was taking place and that there may be 'some noise' until midnight. They weren't wrong, it was boom boom boom until just after midnight. We didn't let it bother us, but I can imagine it would be an annoyance to many people.
I asked for a room with a view on a high floor, however my view was of student flats next door, not a nice view at all, and I was really disappointed by this. I specifically requested a good view on Booking.com (hoping for a view over the valley), but I didn't bother complaining this time, as we were heading straight out after check-in.
The room was the usual high standard that Novotel offer, no complaints really, other than the ironing board and iron taking up 50% of the wardrobe, and their being no small hand washing sink in the toilet room (I find this unhygienic).
We did enjoy our stay here, and I would stay again, but I would insist on a room with a better view.
To see a film that I have previously made of Sheffield, click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTo3O7JUX8M .
To visit the Novotel website, click here: http://www.novotel.com/gb/home/index.shtml .

wn.com/Hotel Review Novotel, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England March 2015
I stayed one night at the Novotel, Sheffield in March, 2015. It was a Saturday night, I booked a double room for two people with Booking.com for £79.00 (room only). The advertised breakfast price on Booking.com was £13.95, which we were not prepared to pay, however, upon check-in breakfast was offered at £9.95 - if booked before midnight. We decided to go with that option.
