The right to die in Belgium: An inside look at the world’s most liberal euthanasia law
With the most liberal laws in the world governing physician-assisted suicide, surveys in Belgium show overwhelming support for its legality. Doctors say euthanasia gives terminally ill patients experiencing constant and unbearable suffering a practical and humane way to die peacefully. But even in a country with far-reaching acceptance, controversy still remains.

On Saturday, November 1, surrounded by family and friends, Brittany Maynard took a dose of legally prescribed lethal drugs, ending her life of 29 years exactly as she had promised to do so in articles published by CNN and People Magazine some three weeks ago.
In January 2014, Brittany was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and given just six months to live.
But instead of spending those months desperately seeking medical ways to extend her life, Brittany embarked on a ‘bucket list’ quest with her parents and husband Daniel, and she checked off the final box on that list with a visit to the Grand Canyon in October.
Oregon’s ‘Death With Dignity’ organization hailed Maynard’s choice and said all people should have the right to end suffering if they chose to.
Some in the media or online, however, strongly disagreed with Brittany’s choice, saying humans have no right to end a life that was given to them.
Many others called Brittany’s decision “brave,” “honest,” “logical,” and even “inspiring.”
Brittany Maynard has now left the world but the debate continues.
Should humans have the right to end terminal suffering? Or do we simply not have the moral right to ever end our own life?

More than a decade after Belgium became the second country in the world to legalize euthanasia, it once again made headlines in early 2014 when it became the first country to lift any age restrictions associated with the procedure. Under the law, terminally ill children can request euthanasia if they are near death, and suffering “constant and unbearable physical” pain with no available treatment. Officials in Belgium’s Euthanasia Control and Evaluation Commission, which oversees the practice in Belgium, expect cases of child-euthanasia to be extremely rare. wn.com/Cancer Patient Makes Emotional Plea For Right To Die
A San Diego Superior Court judge dismissed a right-to-die lawsuit on Monday, filed by three plaintiffs with life-ending illnesses asking for the right to end their lives with the assistance of a doctor, reports NBC10.
According to Judge Gregory Pollack, he can not allow the assisted suicide to go forward until the California legislature addresses the issue and changes current law...

Gov. Brown signs controversial assisted-suicide bill
Caught between conflicting moral arguments, Gov. Jerry Brown, a former Jesuit seminary student, on Monday signed a measure allowing physicians to prescribe lethal doses of drugs to terminally ill patients who want to hasten their deaths.
Approving the bill, whose opponents included the Catholic Church, appeared to be a gut-wrenching decision for the 77-year-old governor, who as a young man studied to enter the priesthood.
“In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death,” Brown added. “I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn’t deny that right to others."
California becomes the fifth state to allow so-called assisted suicide, following Oregon, Washington, Montana and Vermont.

This week on The NDTV Dialogues we focus on the right to die. The death of Aruna Shanbaug after 42 years in what was described as a permanent vegetative state once again brought India’s attention to the larger issue of euthanasia. In fact for the first time, passive euthanasia was allowed in India in certain cases under strict regulations in a case relating to Aruna. Was her death the end of a life sentence or an affirmation of a right to life whatever the outside world’s perceptions may be? The jury is out on this but joining NDTV on this debate are Justice Gyan Sudha Misra, the judge who along with Justice Katju gave the verdict in the Aruna case; Pinki Virani, biographer of Aruna Shanbaug and petitioner as the next friend in that case; critical care specialist, Dr RK Mani; and Harmala Gupta, founder president of Can Support who works with critically ill patients and their families every day.
