"One of philosophy's distinguishing features is that it questions
everything and assumes nothing. Philosophy exposes and questions the assumptions which underlie our everyday thinking about the world, ourselves, our values and our beliefs."
Julian Baggini, Philosophy: Key Themes, p.1, PALGRAVE MACMILLAN.
Philosophy is for everyone. We are all born Philosophers. We begin our lives by asking annoying questions. Our Parents most of the time not able to satisfy or quench our deep desire to understand. We are then told we shouldn't think about things in that kind of way. Slowly but surely the philosopher within us all and our natural minds eye to know our world around us is suppressed. A child is the true Philosopher in my MIND.I WONDER why Philosophy is not taught in the British school system ? F3thinker !?

Facts : 1 Early modern philosophy The early modern treatment of the subject derives from Antoine Arnauld and Pierre Nicole s Logic, or The Art of Thinking, better known as the Port-Royal Logic, first published in 1662
Facts : 2 Arnauld thought that a proposition or judgment consists of taking two different ideas and either putting them together or rejecting them: After conceiving things by our ideas, we compare these ideas and, finding that some belong together and others do not, we unite or separate them
Facts : 3 This judgment is also called a proposition, and it is easy to see that it must have two terms
Facts : 4 One term, of which one affirms or denies something, is called the subject; the other term, which is affirmed or denied, is called the attribute or Praedicatum
Facts : 5 The two terms are joined by the verb is (or is not , if the predicate is denied of the subject)
Facts : 6 Thus every proposition has three components: the two terms, and the copula that connects or separates them
Facts : 7 Even when the proposition has only two words, the three terms are still there
Facts : 8 For example, God loves humanity , really means God is a lover of humanity , God exists means God is a thing
Facts : 9 This theory of judgment dominated logic for centuries, but it has some obvious difficulties: it only considers proposition of the form All A are B
Facts : 10 It does not allow propositions of the form Some A are B , a form logicians call existential
Facts : 11 If neither A nor B includes the idea of existence, then some A are B simply adjoins A to B
Facts : 12 Conversely, if A or B do include the idea of existence in the way that triangle contains the idea three angles equal to two right angles , then A exists is automatically true, and we have an ontological proof of A s existence
Facts : 13 (Indeed, Arnauld s contemporary Descartes famously argued so, regarding the concept God (discourse 4, Meditation 5))
Facts : 14 David Hume argued that the claim that a thing exists, when added to our notion of a thing, does not add anything to the concept
Facts : 15 For example, if we form a complete notion of Moses, and superadd to that notion the claim that Moses existed, we are not adding anything to the notion of Moses
Facts : 16 Kant also argued that existence is not a real predicate, but gave no explanation of how this is possible
Facts : 17 Indeed, his famous discussion of the subject is merely a restatement of Arnauld s doctrine that in the proposition God is omnipotent

Faith Schools, Religious Education OR Philosophy for Life?
We should remember that Ireland had much division and terrorism due to segregated schools into Catholic and Protestant and I understood there have been efforts to make Schools there MORE
integrated in order that the SOCIETY becomes more integrated. Why then are we promoting and encouraging Faith schools now? I understand also there is discussion on changing the Religious Education content and new title for the subject. I think we should change it to PHILOSOPHY FOR LIFE. We should make the subject to be a very brief overview on maybe 6 or 8 main religions to
include the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith and how they are interlinked and with the history of how the concept of God began and how people lived in ancient times i.e. animal and human sacrifice. To make them aware that due to the many contradictions in the "Holy" books, the Bible and Qur’an are NOT reliable or the “perfect” word of God that we should try and follow "word for word” or “ad hoc” on based on knowing only a few verses as some “radical believers” try to do. Their error is they act on their book without knowing both the Bible and Qur'an in particular which both need to be read together as they are "linked" message. Let them be referred to www.ACertainMyth.com (A Certain Myth oR iS iT tRUE) which is illustrated and created with the knowledge of the Bible and Qur’an. Students need to be aware that the “Qur’an DOES confirm Jesus is the Son of God for instance (please see https://youtu.be/2TjPy8frS1Y) and then has a verse contradicting that “fact”. They should be informed that the Qur’an does confirm we should read and believe the scriptures and Prophets from “aforetime” (Surah 4:136) which are all in the Bible.
Then we could touch briefly on the Greek and other main philosophers, to include the Greek Myths, plus Atheism and Evolution. Then make the subject a place to discuss the modern concept of setting goals, being positive, being aware we do not have to let life “take us over” due to a superstitious belief in a "destiny" or astrology we cannot “change”, but we can plan our life and work towards aims and goals suitable for our talents and desires. That many believe in God and many do not, for many strange things are inexplicable in the unscientific world of “belief” and also in scientific world of quantum physics, physics and astronomy being equally amazing. We should briefly touch on how we might attain a “happy” life by having a balanced life with a goal and self discipline. While we continue to have Faith Schools it may be advisable to Compulsory independent ATHEIST teachers into EVERY secondary school that teach this “Philosophy for Life” subject and provide the counselling as well so that children that may be exposed to extremist or even moderate religious teachings can “hear” an alternative balanced view about life and God and this “segregation” of “mind” is not promoted from generation to generation. Please note that the Qur’an has in Surah 5:51 says “do not take Jews and Christians for friends” this is directly anti semitic and anti Christian and integration will now not occur if this verse not addressed.
The Philosophy for Life subject could also be the subject where Counselling for every child is set up, either with the teacher, or counsellors brought into schools. Not necessarily highly trained but trained especially for schools and this task perhaps. For them to discuss privately with the child maybe every term or year, the childs life, their hopes for their future career and to assist them to identify what they are good at and like and direct towards possible careers. To discuss if they have any abuse or other problems at home, advice on the child line number or other advice if something is going on at home or after school. Or if depressed, bullied at school, or similar and to advise and assist where necessary. It is a time and place for them to look at their life and the direction of it and to help them see a better way of doing things if their family life is not good.

Increasingly, intelligence is only tolerated in pre-approved and reassuringly non-challenging forms – deprecatory humor (Stephen Fry), decaffeinated reasoning (Alain de Botton), or suspiciously grand narratives (Simon Schama). Žižek himself is constantly pigeonholed by such media clichés as ‘the Elvis of cultural theory’ and ‘the Marx Brother’. This event sets out to question ‘what can be done?’ b

Bertrand Russell wrote 'Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy' while imprisoned for protesting Britain's involvement in World War I. Russell summarizes the significance of the momentous work of mathematicians in the late nineteenth-century. He further describes his own philosophy of mathematics, Logicism (the view that all mathematical truths are logical truths), and his earlier, influential work solving the paradoxes that plagued mathematical foundations, which crystallized after ten years of dogged effort into the co-authored (with Alfred North Whitehead), three-volume 'Principia Mathematica'. Russell emphasizes the importance of a doctrine of types, the truth of Logicism, and the clarity brought to the philosophy of mathematics by the method of logical analysis. (summary by Landon D. C. This event sets out to question ‘what can be done?’ by serious thought in a culture of sound bites. Is the best that media philosophers can hope for to ‘Try again, fail again, fail better’?

The Problems of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell - FULL Audio Book
The Problems of Philosophy is one of Bertrand Russell's attempts to create a brief and accessible guide to the problems of philosophy. Focusing on problems he believes will provoke positive and constructive discussion, Russell concentrates on knowledge rather than metaphysics.
Russell guides the reader through his famous distinction between "knowledge by acquaintance and knowledge by description" and introduces important theories of Plato, Aristotle, René Descartes, David Hume, John Locke, Immanuel Kant, Georg Hegel and others, to lay the foundation for philosophical inquiry by general readers and scholars alike.
