5. The Shanghai Baby
The photo of a Chinese baby crying after a Japanese air raid on the Shanghai South Station in late August 1937 is one of the iconic images of the Second Sino-Japanese War. It was carried by hundreds of major US newspapers. It is estimated that 136 million Americans saw the horrifying picture.
4. The Berlin Wall Rescue
On August 13, 1961, Germany erected a barbed wire fence to divide Berlin in two. The soldier on the photo is a guard from the East, under strict orders not to allow anyone across the new border. The child is a young boy separated from his parents. By reaching over to lift the boy to where he wants to be, the soldier is taking a risk. But the soldier lifts the boy across anyway. At least there is some human dignity portrayed in this picture but still, a lot of kids weren't "lifted"...
3. Mongolian Woman
The picture was published in National Geographic in 1913. The caption is simple: A Mongolian woman condemned to die of starvation. Westerners had previously written of people placed in cages in Mongolian markets, where passersby could taunt and insult them as they starved. However, later reports described the cramped padlocked boxes as cells rather than methods of execution. Other reports claimed people would be locked in the boxes, unable to properly lie or sit, sometimes for years.
2. The Brothers At Nagasaki
Joe O’Donnell, the man who took this photo at Nagasaki, was sent by the U.S. military to document the damage inflicted on the Japanese homeland caused by air raids of fire bombs and atomic bombs. In the photo, the boy stands erect, having done his duty by bringing his dead brother to a cremation ground. He has epitomized the spirit of a defeated nation.
1. Mass Grave
Before the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp was liberated in April 1945, the Nazis killed 50,000 people there. Anne Frank was among its victims, she was murdered just a month before the British arrived. The photograph of “Mass Grave 3? was taken shortly after. The man standing casually among the uncountable bodies is camp doctor Fritz Klein, who was hanged for his role in December 1945.

Chair: Professor Conor Gearty
Recorded on 3 February 2015 in New Theatre, East Building.
In February 2014 the British Academy published Prospering Wisely, a multimedia resource which explores the nature of ‘prosperity’ in today’s world. It highlights the importance of thinking beyond simple measures such as GDP, showing how humanities and social science research fuels our modern knowledge-based economy, helps sustain our healthy, open democracy and contributes to human and cultural wellbeing and ‘the good life’. At the heart of this contribution is the vital role played by research, epitomised by a renowned centre of research and teaching excellence such as the LSE. As a nation are we investing sufficiently in these drivers of future success and human progress? Are cuts in public expenditure imperilling the UK’s hard-won world-leading status?
Professor Julia Black is Pro-Director of Research at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Greg Clark (@gregclarkmp) is the Minister for Universities, Science and Cities and MP for Royal Tunbridge Wells.
Nicholas Stern is the President of the British Academy and the IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Conor Gearty (@conorgearty) is Director of the Institute of Public Affairs and Professor of Human Rights Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The Institute of Public Affairs (@LSEPubAffairs) is one of the world's leading centres of public policy. We aim to debate and address some of the major issues of our time, whether international or national, through our established teaching programmes, our research and our highly innovative public-engagement initiatives.
The British Academy (@britac_news) is an independent national academy of Fellows elected for their eminence in research and publication. It is the UK's expert body that supports and speaks for the humanities and social sciences.

A short film, narrated by Gavin Esler – Chancellor of the University of Kent, sets out to answer this question as part of the University's 50th anniversary celebrations.
The animation, in just 3 ½ minutes, encapsulates the current issues and debates for Humanities researchers: time for research, metrics and measuring outcomes, the role of research grants, practice as research, internationalisation, public engagement and, of course, the REF.
Professor Ray Laurence and Dr Tamar Jeffers-McDonald led the project to make this film. Kent researchers, from those at the start of their careers to senior professors discussed the nature of research in Humanities and the issues that preoccupied them.
The film was made by Cognitive – a Folkestone based Animation Studio, who have produced animations for the BBC Radio 4: A History of Ideas series.
The Faculty of Humanities at Kent has 224 research active academics located in six schools: Architecture, Arts, English, European Culture and Languages, History, and Music & Fine Art.
Ray Laurence was Director of Research and Enterprise in the Faculty of Humanities at Kent from 2013 to 2015 and is Professor of Roman History and Archaeology at the University. He has previously made three films with Cognitive including: ‘A Glimpse of Teenage Life in Ancient Rome’, which has more than a million views on YouTube.
Tamar Jeffers-McDonald was Director of Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Humanities at Kent from 2013 to 2015 and is Reader in Film Studies. Her most recent book When Harry met Sally is published in November.
The film will allow future generations of academics to get a glimpse of what preoccupied us in 2015.

Great New Books in the Humanities: Barrio Rising
Beginning in the late 1950s political leaders in Venezuela built what they celebrated as Latin America’s most stable democracy. But outside the staid halls of power, in the gritty barrios of a rapidly urbanizing country, another politics was rising—unruly, contentious, and clamoring for inclusion. Based on years of archival and ethnographic research in Venezuela’s largest public housing community

Passing in White America
Between the 18th and 20th centuries, countless African Americans passed as white, leaving behind families, friends, and community. It was, as Stanford historian Allyson Hobbs writes, a chosen exile, a separation from one racial identity and a leap into another. Her work explores the way this racial indeterminacy offered an escape from slavery in the antebellum South and helped defy Jim Crow. But i

Based on years of archival and ethnographic research in Venezuela’s largest public housing community, Barrio Rising delivers the first in-depth history of urban popular politics before the Bolivarian Revolution, providing crucial context for understanding the democracy that emerged during the presidency of Hugo Chávez.

But in looking back at both American history and the story of her own family, Hobbs also uncovers the terrible grief, loneliness, and isolation of passing, and the ways it continues to influence our thinking about racial identity and politics.
This program is presented as part of the annual Karla Scherer Endowed Lecture Series for the University of Chicago and is presented in partnership with the Stanford Humanities Center.

COPERNICUS FESTIVAL, May 6-11, 2014, Kraków
http://www.copernicusfestival.com
John Gray discusses the topic of relations between the sciences and humanities, which is of great intrinsic importance all over the world. He argues that it is a mistake to think that social science can ever (or should) be modeled on natural sciences. They are different. They apply different types of phenomena - human beings are not machines, however complicated or unpredictable. They have reason for what they do, they are govern by their view of the world, their (right or wrong) beliefs. And the attempt to model human action on a kind of methodology which is derived from natural science is an error.
Gray provides three examples. The first is economy or rather economism, which is an attempt to model all of human behavior on economic exchanges or transactions. He argues that economism doesn't even work when applied to economic activity -- it is a mistaken approach even to the marketplace, because marketplace is govern by beliefs, culture understanding and irrationality. The second idea is modernization (some philosophers called it modernity), according to which all societies as they become more modern, become more similar as well as more liberal and democratic. He thinks that it is a mistake too -- societies can become more modern and more different and a particular society can be highly modern and highly barbaric. Finally, he talks about intellectual suppression of religion. He noted that he isn't religious person himself. By intellectual suppression of religion he doesn't mean an atheism or deny of religious beliefs. It is a way, in which religious concepts and categories have been excluded from various disciplines. Those categories reappeared in secular forms. According to Grey much secular thinking consist of repressed religion.
***
John Gray is an English political philosopher with interests in analytic philosophy and the history of ideas. He retired as School Professor of European Thought at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Gray has written several influential books, including False Dawn: The Delusions of Global Capitalism (1998), which argues that free market globalization is an unstable Enlightenment project currently in the process of disintegration, Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals (2003), which attacks philosophical humanism, a worldview which Gray sees as originating in religious ideologies, and Black Mass: Apocalyptic Religion and the Death of Utopia (2007), a critique of utopian thinking in the modern world. Gray sees volition, and hence morality, as an illusion, and portrays humanity as a ravenous species engaged in wiping out other forms of life. He writes that 'humans ... cannot destroy the Earth, but they can easily wreck the environment that sustains them.'

He writes that 'humans ... cannot destroy the Earth, but they can easily wreck the environment that sustains them.'

Ta-Nehisi Coates has become one of the most powerful writers today. A staffer for "The Atlantic" and author of a memoir, "The Beautiful Struggle," he shares his stunning and evocative reflections on what it is like to inhabit a black male body in contemporary America. In "Between the World and Me" he asks how we, as a nation, can reckon with our fraught history and free ourselves from a troubling legacy. Taking us from the Civil War battlefield to Chicago's South Side, Coates attempts to answer one of the most pressing and relevant questions of our times. Chicago Public Media reporter Natalie Y. Moore joins Coates for a conversation.

Digital humanities scholars are a diverse group whose work is the result of cross-pollination among humanities scholarship, computer science, and digital media. Many well-known digital humanities projects apply tools borrowed from computer science—such as data-mining or geographic information systems—to works of literature, historical documents, and other materials traditionally in the domain of the humanities. What do digital humanities scholars see as the potential of this interdisciplinary field? And what are the important theoretical and methodological contributions digital humanities can offer to both the humanities and the sciences Panelists: Daniel J. Cohen, Assoc. Professor of History and Director of the Center for History and New Media (CHNM) at George Mason University. Federica Frabetti, Senior Lecturer in the Communication, Media, and Culture Program at Oxford Brookes University. Dino Buzzetti recently retired from the Dept. of Philosophy at the University of Bologna.
