Earlier on Wednesday Senior General Than Shwe, the chairman of Myanmar's State Peace and Development Council, met China's future leader, vice president Hu Jintao at the Great Hall of the People. China is a close economic and military ally of a regime that is shunned by the West for suppressing democracy. Wednesday's meetings took place after a meeting between the General and Chinese president Jiang Zemin where the two parties cooperation agreements covering a number of areas like trade, health and sports. According to Chinese State news agency, Xinhua, China is to offer 200 (m) million U.S. dollars in preferential loans to Myanmar to aid its economic development. Border trade and narcotics interdiction were also believed to be among the key issues discussed by the two sides. Myanmar is a world leader in the cultivation of opium and the illegal production of heroin. Than Shwe last visited China in 1996. He is accompanied by his wife and a 63-member official delegation that includes the No. 3 junta leader, General Khin Nyunt, and the ministers for foreign affairs, agriculture, energy and information, officials said. Khin Nyunt on Wednesday met newly elected Politburo member Luo Gan. Myanmar's military regime has relied heavily on China for economic support and weapons since it came to power in 1988 after crushing popular protests for democracy. The junta's actions have often been compared to Beijing's Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989. China also refuses to join the international criticism of the junta over its refusal to accept the general election victory of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 1990. According to Chinese statistics, bilateral trade totals 600 (m) million U.S. dollars annually, making China Myanmar's third largest trading partner after Singapore and Thailand.
