Our introduction to this charming part of Italy is an exploration of the agricultural communities and hillside villages of Amalfi. During the holiday we visit the fascinating remains of the Roman town of Pompei and have an easy walk to the summit of Vesuvius (1280m) with its spectacular views over the Bay of Naples. This is an excellent easy walking week with a real flavour of Italy and enjoy 3 days of hiking on ancient mule tracks above Amalfi. As a splendid finale, we hike the spectacular 'Walk of the Gods' which leads down from Agerola to the steep, narrow streets of the picture postcard fishing village of Positano. https://www.keadventure.com/holidays/italy-walking-amalfi-coast-vesuvius-pompei

AMALFI COAST
The Amalfi Coast, or Costiera Amalfitana in Italian, is a stretch of coastline on the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula of Italy (Province of Salerno), extending from Positano in the west to Vietri sul Mare in the east.
The main town close to the Amalfi Coast is Salerno, the municipalities belonging to its coast are Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Tramonti, Minori, Ravello, Scala, Atrani, Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Praiano and Positano. Very close to the territory of the coast (near Furore and Conca dei Marini) is it situated Agerola, located in the Sorrentine Peninsula and belonging to the Province of Naples.
Renowned for its rugged terrain, scenic beauty, picturesque towns and diversity, the Amalfi Coast was featured in Positano (1953) by American writer John Steinbeck.
***
Amalfi is a town and comune in the province of Salerno, in the region of Campania, Italy, on the Gulf of Salerno, c. 35 km southeast of Naples. It lies at the mouth of a deep ravine, at the foot of Monte Cerreto (1,315 meters, 4,314 feet), surrounded by dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery. The town of Amalfi was the capital of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, an important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Amalfi was a popular holiday destination for the British upper class and aristocracy.
Amalfi is the main town of the coast on which it is located, named Costiera Amalfitana, and is today an important tourist destination together with other towns on the same coast, such as Positano, Ravello and others. Amalfi is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
History:
Amalfi is first mentioned in the 6th century, and soon acquired importance as a maritime power, trading grain of its neighbors, salt from Sardiniaand slaves from the interior, and even timber, for the gold dinars minted in Egypt and Syria, in order to buy the silks of the Byzantine empire that it resold in the West. Grain-bearing Amalfi traders enjoyed privileged positions in the Islamic ports, Fernand Braudel notes. The Amalfi tables (Tavole Amalfitane) provided a maritime code that was widely used by the Christian port cities. Merchants of Amalfi were using gold coins to purchase land in the 9th century, while most of Italy worked in a barter economy. In the 8th and 9th century, when Mediterranean trade revived it shared with Gaeta the Italian trade with the East, while Venice was in its infancy, and in 848 its fleet went to the assistance of Pope Leo IV against the Saracens.

The story of the Ziro's Rook
The locals, especially the elderly, do not really like to travel in these parts: the Rook in fact is not simply one of the many towers built to defend themselves against the Saracens, it was the scene of one of the bloodiest episodes in the history of Amalfi.
Here in the early 1500's, it was locked, with her children, Joan of Aragon, known as "the Mad." His crime was to have a close relationship with the butler court after being widowed Alfonso Piccolomini, Duke of Amalfi, corrupt and dissolute man to whom had been married only 12 years old. The report created a great scandal at the time so the brothers decided to imprison Giovanna and her children, even children, in the tower where they were slaughtered by themselves

Welcome to Smoke and Travel. We bring you back the old evenings with your best friends, a real meeting, a good chat and a lot of fun playing together...
But now it isn’t a kids game anymore.
Bored of the traditional games?
You’ve never played a board game where you have so much fun than in here.
Risky business, luxury life, excitement, competition, friendship and strategy.
You will have an unforgettable time together with your friends.
Just like the real world, but no crime and no prohibitions, so… no police.
Let see who can accomplish their mission first and can call himself ‘Backer of the game’.
Smoke and Travel it’s gonna blow your mind.

You can't travel in northern Italy without stopping in Florence. (Partly, because it's on all the train routes!) But it is always worth a visit since it holds an almost unlimited treasure of art and architecture.
On our most recent trip we were delighted by some major, and some less known sights:
Palazzo Pitti
Begun 1458, primarily Renaissance, façade: probably Brunelleschi
contains: Palatine Gallery, Royal Apartments, Galleria d'Arte Moderna. Revolving exhibitions always offer something wonderful.
Ponte Vecchio
Medieval bridge over Arno. Private royal corridor connects
Pitti to Uffizi, now open as gallery
Duomo
Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, 1296 Arnolfo di Cambio --
1436 Filippo Brunelleschi (dome), 19th century Gothic Revival façade
Campanile
1334 Giotto di Bondone (successor to Cambio)
Florentine Gothic
Babtistry
Battistero di San Giovanni, 1059-1128 Florentine Romaneque
Ghiberti's bronze doors, Mosaic ceiling by Venetian craftsman, 1225+
We didn't get inside this time, but be sure to see:
the Bargello and Casa di Dante
Piazza dell Signoria
Exteriors: Palazzo Vecchio, Uffizi
Loggia dei Lanzi
Sculpture: Grand Duke Cosimo I,
Neptune 1575 Ammannati,
Perseus 1554 Cellini,
Rape of the Sabine Women, 1583 Giambologna,
Hercules 7 Cacus, 1534 Bandinelli
Basilica of Santa Croce
1294 -- 1442 Arnolfo di Cambio (?), largest Franciscan church in world, tombs of Michelangel0, Galileo, etc.
simple Gothic interior, also includes the famous...
Cappella de' Pazzi
1441 -- 1460 concepts by Filippo Brunelleschi,
(completion & detailing by others)
geometric theme considered harmonious,
Renaissance style
Museo dell' Opera
Architectural remnants saved after floods, reconstruction, fire, etc.
Palazzo Vecchio
1299 Tuscan, crenellated, Romanesque, early designs by Arnolfo di Cambio, later taken by De' Medicis who redecorated in Renaissance "Grotesque". (generally under-rated, really very interesting)

http://www.facebook.com/whitecollarvagabond - We hiked the path of the gods from Nocelle above Positano to Praiano. It was a 4.5 hour beautiful hike. We ventured out in the middle of the day in our FiveFinger vibrams shoes. This hike offers spectacular views of the Amalfi coast including views of the island of Capri in the distance. Il Sentiero degli as it is called in Italian is one of our favorite hikes in the world and definitely worth the effort.
Its name already recalls the mythological landscapes of the Greek Olympus and, for sure, no other name could describe better the amazing view offered from this mountain trail. From this trekking path, situated half way up Mount Sant'Angelo a Tre Pizzi (with three peaks) it is possible to admire one of the most striking panoramas of the World: an incomparable overview from the Cilento (province situated South of Salerno) to the Island of Capri.
It is a walking track between the towns of Agerola, Praiano and Positano, at an average height of 500 meters above sea level and it offers a memorable challenge within the local environment.
The suggestion is to start from Bomerano, a district of the town of Agerola situated at 650 meters above sea level, and walk along the path to reach Nocelle, a small district above Positano at approx. 2 ½ to 3 hours walking distance.
The first site to visit along this nature trail, coming from Bomerano, is the Grotta del Biscotto (at 524 meters above sea level), named after its geologic conformation, similar to the shape of a biscuit bread (typical product of Agerola).
The pass of Colle Serra, situated at 578 meters above sea level, halfway point, reachable also from Praiano, but in this case walking back towards Bomerano, is where the "pinnacolo" is located. This is where a memorial tablet has been placed to remember Giustino Fortunato, who gave the name to this trail.
The surroundings are a continuous blooming of the Mediterranean bush, a mixture of chestnut trees, holm oaks, alders and corbezzolo trees. With some luck it is possible to catch sight of one of the peregrine hawks that live here.
The last stretch is a path rich of uphills and downhills that end up in the district of Nocelle (420 meters above sea level), a small rural village, from where it is possible to reach the main road SS 163 walking down 1500 steps towards Arienzo or continuing the walk towards Montepertuso, another "uphill" district of Positano, from where it is possible to catch a small local bus down.

http://www.facebook.com/whitecollarvagabond We made it to beautiful Positano, Italy. We're staying at casa Cuccaro in the village of Nocelle. We had to take 1700 stairs down to positano, great exercise! We enjoyed great pasta dishes and incredibly good house wine. We visited art galleries, did some jewelry shopping (local artists), bought some local hand made ceramics and then took the bus back up to Nocelle...
Nocelle is a bonny, antique hamlet of Positano, rising at 400 mt above sea-level, where to enjoy a peaceful, resting stay far away from the urban chaos. A lovely 1700 steps flight, leads to Positano, reachable in a few minutes through outstanding panoramas that will leave you breathless!
Nocelle is definitely situated in a key strategic position that, specially in the past, allowed to dominate and monitor a very big coastal territory, avoiding piratical incursions.
For trekking lovers, Nocelle is indeed a little paradise, thanks to the dozens of excursions throughout Lattari Mountains that start from there. The most popular hiking trail is "Sentiero degli Dei" (Walk of the Gods), particularly interesting and scenic is in fact the part between Grotta Biscotto and Nocelle, that is one of the best ways to better view the entire Amalfi Coast.
The Path starts from Bomerano, hamlet of Agerola, and passing for Grotta del Biscotto (524 mt) and many other enlargements (used as repositories) you will go onward towards Colle della Serra (578 mt) where the Path bifurcates: from the left side it goes down to Praiano, from the right side straight towards Nocelle (420 mt).
The journey snakes itself into chalky stratifications, with breath-taking views.
Once arrived at the fountain, take the first right which leads to the path towards Montepertuso.
The paved road from Montepertuso leads you directly to the SS Amalfitana, which is the main road that connects all the villages of the Amalfi Coast, from Salerno all the way up to Sorrento.
Gorgeous excursions could be done walking through the old Medieval Bridge, which overlooks Vallone Porto.
