Bath (pronounced /ˈbɑːθ/) is a city in the ceremonial county of Somerset in the south west of England. It is situated 97 miles (156 km) west of London and 13 miles (21 km) south-east of Bristol. The population of the city is 83,992.[1] It was granted city status by Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1590, and was made a county borough in 1889 which gave it administrative independence from its county, Somerset. The city became part of Avon when that county was created in 1974. Since 1996, when Avon was abolished, Bath has been the principal centre of the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES;).
The city was founded, among surrounding hills, in the valley of the River Avon around naturally occurring hot springs (the only ones in the United Kingdom, using the common definition of a spring with water above average human body temperature) where the Romans built baths and a temple, giving it the name Aquae Sulis. Edgar was crowned king of England at Bath Abbey in 973. Much later, it became popular as a spa resort during the Georgian era, which led to a major expansion that left a heritage of exemplary Georgian architecture crafted from Bath Stone.
As City of Bath the city became a World Heritage Site in 1987. The city has a variety of theatres, museums, and other cultural and sporting venues, which have helped to make it a major centre for tourism, with over one million staying visitors and 3.8 million day visitors to the city each year.[5] The city has two universities and several schools and colleges. There is a large service sector and growing information and communication technologies and creative industries, providing employment for the population of Bath and the surrounding area.

The Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Bath, commonly known as Bath Abbey, is an Anglican parish church and a former Benedictine monastery in Bath, Somerset, England. Founded in the 7th century, Bath Abbey was reorganised in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries; major restoration work was carried out by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s. It is one of the largest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the West Country.
The church is cruciform in plan, and is able to seat 1200. An active place of worship, with hundreds of congregation members and hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, it is used for religious services, secular civic ceremonies, concerts and lectures. The choir performs in the abbey and elsewhere. There is a heritage museum in the vaults.
The abbey is a Grade I listed building, particularly noted for its fan vaulting. It contains war memorials for the local population and monuments to several notable people, in the form of wall and floor plaques and commemorative stained glass. The church has two organs and a peal of ten bells. The west front includes sculptures of angels climbing to heaven on two stone ladders.

Bath is a city in the ceremonial county of Somerset, South West England, that is known for the curative Roman-built baths that still exist there. In 2011, its population was 88,859.[1] Bath is located 97 miles (156 km) west of London and 11 miles (18 km) south-east of Bristol. The city, in the valley of the River Avon, became a World Heritage Site in 1987.
The city became a spa with the Latin name Aquae Sulis ("the waters of Sulis") c. AD 60 when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the River Avon although oral tradition suggests that the hot springs were known even before then. Bath Abbey was founded in the 7th century and became a religious centre; the building was rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries. In the 17th century, claims were made for the curative properties of the water from the springs, and Bath became popular as a spa town during the Georgian era, leaving a heritage of Georgian architecture crafted from Bath stone, including the Royal Crescent, Circus, Pump Room and Assembly Rooms where Beau Nash presided over the city's social life from 1705 until his death in 1761. Many of the streets and squares were laid out by John Wood, the Elder, and in the 18th century the city became fashionable and the population grew. Jane Austen lived in Bath in the early 19th century. Further building was undertaken in the 19th century and following the Bath Blitz in World War II.
Manufacturing has been in decline in the city, but it has strong software, publishing and service-oriented industries. The city's theatres, museums, and other cultural and sporting venues have helped to make it a major centre for tourism with more than one million staying visitors and 3.8 million day visitors to the city each year. There are several museums including the Museum of Bath Architecture, Victoria Art Gallery, Museum of East Asian Art, and the Holburne Museum. The city has two universities: the University of Bath and Bath Spa University, with Bath College providing further education. Sporting clubs include Bath Rugby and Bath City F.C. while TeamBath is the umbrella name for all of the University of Bath sports teams.
Bath became part of the county of Avon in 1974, and, following Avon's abolition in 1996, has been the principal centre of Bath and North East Somerset.

Wells, Somerset Travel Guide
This week I’m in Wells, in Somerset, not to be mistaken with Wells in Somerset.
Toby's channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/tobydolier?sub_confirmation=1
You may think that this picturesque location is a town but it’s not a town, it's a city and that’s because it has a cathedral. In fact it’s the smallest city in the UK.
Wells Cathedral is actually relatively new, it was built in 2009. The ar

You may think that this picturesque location is a town but it’s not a town, it's a city and that’s because it has a cathedral. In fact it’s the smallest city in the UK.
Wells Cathedral is actually relatively new, it was built in 2009. The architect, Mrs Maureen Tucker gave the finished building it’s “aged” look by dabbing the brick work with tea bags.
Many have accused Well’s residents of being xenophobic and intolerant of other cultures which is why it may surprise you that Wells was the first place in the UK to regular produce curry. The first one they brought out in England was the vegetable bhuna, other dishes followed in subsequent years.
No visit to Wells would be complete without a visit to Bakwell Manor, the former home of the late Mr Kipling. Guest to the manor house often report seeing the ghost of the famous baker who, in life, was exceedingly good at making cakes.

7. Berlin - Berlin is testing out vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies in the hopes of creating a virtual power plant from electric vehicles.
6. Tokyo - The city will create a smart town in the suburbs in partnership with major industry. The eco-burb will contain homes that integrate solar panels, storage ba tteries, and energy efficient appliances all connected to a smart grid.
5. London - also scored relatively high across the board. London has been well-recognized for some of its sustainability innovations (i.e. congestion tax) and its robust transit system.
4. New York - New York scored higher than most other cities in the ranking in all of the categories except of quality of life, where it ranked a poor 47th. It has teamed with innovator IBM to help the city prevent fires and protect first responders as well as identify questionable tax refund claims--a move that is expected to save the city about $100 million over a five-year period.
3. Paris - Paris already has a highly successful bike sharing program, Velib, and just last month, its mayor launched a similar model for small EVs called Autolib.
2. Toronto - smartest city in NA, scored well across the board, it is an active member of the Clinton 40 (C40) megacities, which seek to transition to the low-carbon economy. The private sector is getting in on the action too, setting up a Smart Commute Toronto initiative to increase the city's transit efficiency.
1. The smartest city in the world is Vienna - Vienna was the only city that ranked in the top 10 in every category. It is establishing bold smart-city targets and tracking their progress to reach these goals with programs like Smart Energy Vision 2050, Roadmap 2020, and Action Plan 2012-2015.
A smart city is defined as using information and communication technologies to be more intelligent and efficient in the use of resources, resulting in cost and energy savings, improved service delivery and quality of life, and reduced environmental footprint--all supporting innovation and the low-carbon economy.
The rankings were determined by the cities scores on 4 global categories: Innovation, Green ranking, Quality of life and digital city.

Travel Annex takes you up the river to a hidden natural wonder just outside of Port Antonio in Jamaica. The Somerset Falls are one of the country's best kept secrets with clear fresh turquoise water and tranquil jungle surroundings. Local guides take you on the quick boat trip up to the falls and then you are free to jump, swim, shower and dive. The rocks are surprisingly NOT slippery so anyone can make it up to the ledge with ease. Music by the legendary Jolly Boys.

Hanoi, with a population of 7 million, is the capital and second-largest city of
Vietnam.
October 2010 officially marked 1000 years since the establishment of the
city. On this occasion, Hanoi was named by Frommer's travel guide as one
of the world's "Top Destinations 2010".
It has been invaded by the Chinese, French and Japanese. The French
Colonial period in particular has had a noticeable influence on the aesthetics
of the City.
This video featured the following iconic landmarks and points of interest:
1) Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake or turtle lake, is the
historical and cultural center of Hanoi, and is linked to the legend of the
magic sword.
2) The Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem lake, has the original street layout and
architecture of old Hanoi. It still has the original 36 streets.
3) The One Pillar Pagoda (Vietnamese: Chùa Một Cột) is a historic Buddhist
temple in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. It is regarded as one of Vietnam's
two most iconic temples, the 2nd one is the Perfume river in Hue.
The temple is built of wood on a single stone pillar 1.25 m in diameter, and
it is designed to resemble a lotus blossom, which is a Buddhist symbol of
purity, since a lotus blossoms in a muddy pond.
4) Temple of Literature (Vietnamese: Văn Miếu) is a temple of Confucius in
Hanoi, northern Vietnam.
5) Trúc Bạch Lake (Vietnamese: Hồ Trúc Bạch) is one of the many lakes in
the city of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. It is known outside Vietnam as the
lake where sen. John McCain was shot down.
6) West Lake (Vietnamese: Hồ Tây) is a freshwater lake in the center of
Hanoi, Vietnam. With a shore length of 17 km (about 10.6 miles), this is the
largest lake of the capital and a popular place for recreation with many
surrounding gardens, hotels and villas. A small part of West Lake is divided
by Thanh Nien road to form Truc Bach Lake.
West Lake is bordered with Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest pagoda in
Vietnam.
7) "Hanoi Hilton", was a prison used by the French colonists in Vietnam for
political prisoners and later by North Vietnam for prisoners of war during the
Vietnam War. It was demolished and replaced by the Hanoi towers, it is now
the Somerset Grand Hotel.
9) The Hanoi opera.
10) St Joseph cathedral.
11) Thien Quang lake, formerly Thuyen Quang before 1975 and Halair lake
under the French colonial time.
12) Dong Xuan market.
13) Sofitel Plaza hotel. We stayed at the Sofitel Plaza hotel, overlooking the
West lake, it had the most breathtaking panoramic view of the city.
14) Rice paddies outside Hanoi.
