Through the eyes of newsreel cameras and advertising of the time, we present an affectionate look at the way we were in the 1950's: the way we dressed, the way we laughed (and cried) - even the way we holidayed. In 1950, Britain was working hard to recover from the Second World War. Yet, as the decade went on and the economic conditions improved - prompting PM MacMillan to tell people of Britain "You never had it so good" - a cascade of wonderful gadgets found their way into British homes, and families began holidaying on the beaches and promenades.
By the end of the decade booming Britain was in overdrive with 5.5 million cars on the road, the opening of the M1 and the arrival of the first Mini. The teenager had also come of age with new dance crazes and flamboyant fashions interspersed with bizzare hairstyles - anything to make them stand out in the crowd!
This programme also focuses on the events that shook the world during the decade; the death of George VI in 1952 heralding a new Queen, Elizabeth II, and her Coronation in 1953; the conquering of Everest: the first four minute mile; the last woman to be hanged in Britain; and the tragic Munich air disaster.

Racism in the United States has been a major issue since the colonial era and the slave era. Legally sanctioned racism imposed a heavy burden on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latin Americans. European Americans (particularly Anglo Americans) were privileged by law in matters of literacy, immigration, voting rights, citizenship, land acquisition, and criminal procedure over periods of time extending from the 17th century to the 1960s. Many non-Protestant European immigrant groups, particularly American Jews, Irish Americans, Italian Americans, as well as other immigrants from elsewhere, suffered xenophobic exclusion and other forms of discrimination in American society.
Major racially structured institutions included slavery, Indian Wars, Native American reservations, segregation, residential schools (for Native Americans), and internment camps. Formal racial discrimination was largely banned in the mid-20th century, and came to be perceived as socially unacceptable and/or morally repugnant as well, yet racial politics remain a major phenomenon. Historical racism continues to be reflected in socio-economic inequality. Racial stratification continues to occur in employment, housing, education, lending, and government.
The 20th century saw a hardening of institutionalized racism and legal discrimination against citizens of African descent in the United States. Although technically able to vote, poll taxes, acts of terror (often perpetuated by groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, founded in the Reconstruction South), and discriminatory laws such as grandfather clauses kept black Americans disenfranchised particularly in the South but also nationwide following the Hayes election at the end of the Reconstruction era in 1877. In response to de jure racism, protest and lobbyist groups emerged, most notably, the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) in 1909.
This time period is sometimes referred to as the nadir of American race relations because racism in the United States was worse during this time than at any period before or since. Segregation, racial discrimination, and expressions of white supremacy all increased. So did anti-black violence, including lynchings and race riots.
In addition, racism which had been viewed primarily as a problem in the Southern states, burst onto the national consciousness following the Great Migration, the relocation of millions of African Americans from their roots in the Southern states to the industrial centers of the North after World War I, particularly in cities such as Boston, Chicago, and New York (Harlem). In northern cities, racial tensions exploded, most violently in Chicago, and lynchings--mob-directed hangings, usually racially motivated—increased dramatically in the 1920s. As a member of the Princeton chapter of the NAACP, Albert Einstein corresponded with W. E. B. Du Bois, and in 1946 Einstein called racism America's "worst disease."
The Jim Crow Laws were state and local laws enacted in the Southern and border states of the United States and enforced between 1876 and 1965. They mandated "separate but equal" status for black Americans. In reality, this led to treatment and accommodations that were almost always inferior to those provided to white Americans. The most important laws required that public schools, public places and public transportation, like trains and buses, have separate facilities for whites and blacks. (These Jim Crow Laws were separate from the 1800-66 Black Codes, which had restricted the civil rights and civil liberties of African Americans.) State-sponsored school segregation was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States in 1954 in Brown v. Board of Education. Generally, the remaining Jim Crow laws were overruled by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act; none were in effect at the end of the 1960s.
Segregation continued even after the demise of the Jim Crow laws. Data on house prices and attitudes toward integration from suggest that in the mid-20th century, segregation was a product of collective actions taken by whites to exclude blacks from their neighborhoods. Segregation also took the form of redlining, the practice of denying or increasing the cost of services, such as banking, insurance, access to jobs, access to health care, or even supermarkets to residents in certain, often racially determined, areas. Although in the United States informal discrimination and segregation have always existed, the practice called "redlining" began with the National Housing Act of 1934, which established the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).

The 1950's. Known for its greaser styles, doo-wop music, and breakthrough advertising techniques, the 50's have remained memorable decades after its passing. Its styles and morals have continued to be an inspiration and find admiration even in today's life.
The 2000's. Technicolor, Technological, Techno-you-name-it. The 2000s completely re-mastered modern living. iPhones, emails, Jason Derulo -
With such drastic differences, how could the 1950s and the 2000s be even remotely the same? Taking a closer look into gender roles, familial structures, and social norms, we discover the similarities and differences between these two eras.
We like to call the 50's "The Simpler Times." Romanticizing the past is fun and all, but if you look at some ideas of the time, the 50s may be better of referred to as the simple-minded times.
Gender roles, for example, were extremely limiting. Men were claimed as the alphas - they made the decisions, they went to college, they ran the businesses, they brought home the bacon. Meanwhile, women were handed the submissive end of the stick, being expected to stay home, cook, clean, and watch the children. Their highest option for education was attending finishing school, and even then, marriage was still pushed onto them to be their one true aspiration. Women who wanted more for themselves were claimed to be crazy. Perhaps not the wisest thing to say to those who handle the household knives.
Jumping to today's time, women have more options than ever. College is not only available for everyone now, it's insisted upon. Women can hold jobs of high power, and can have further aspirations than motherhood or wifely duties. In fact, many households are now dual-income as women branch out into the workforce.
However, as much progress as the 2000's have made, the 50's sexism has still found a way to stick around. Though women have more options for jobs, their pay is still 23% less than that of men's, even when they perform the same amount of work for the same amount of hours. Furthermore, women only are 15% of the fortune 500 CEOS. So while many accomplishments have been made for women in the workforce, we still have ways to go.
The 1950's family life was white picket fence perfection. It consisted of a daily routine of dad leaving for work while mom got the kids ready for school, cleaned the house, and began dinner. By the time dad came home, dinner was on the table and the family would sit down and enjoy conversation with each other. Men, again, were the alphas, and were seen as the head of the household. They ran the family checkbook, and made decisions for the family. Though women basically kept the house afloat, they were seen as substandard to their husbands. Sons were expected to follow in their father's footsteps of one day being successful businessmen with a lovely doting wife, while daughters were brought up learning how to one day be the perfect wife and mother.
Today, families can be incredibly diverse. Instead of just finding heterosexual couples, you can find single parents, step-parents, and gay couples all living their lives as families. More interracial couples are prevalent now, something that was once taboo in the 50's. Income provider role isn't set on one person, with many different variations available, and children of either sex are taught to want success in life, not just a marriage. Family lives overall these days lead to more open-minded, ambitious generations.
The 50's are probably most idealized for how they ran their social lives. The 50's are known for their time of drive-in-movie-dates, and their swell way of speaking. Physical affection during this time is always portrayed as very conservative - most couples even slept in separate beds. For high schoolers then, with communication means not quite so vast yet, speaking to friends meant meeting down at soda parlors or dancing while the jukebox played. These dances have become a trademark style of the era.
Insert the selfie generation. With iPhones and the Internet kicking off in the new millennium, new ways to communicate were invented faster than you could post a selfie. No longer limited to just phone calls, new forms of communication included, texting, instant messaging, social media sites, and web calls. Now, reaching your friends was just a send button away. New slang was developed among these times as well, including with a variety of -cough cough- interesting new acronyms and phrases.
We've come a long way since the 50's, and many things have improved for the better. Gender roles have opened up, familial settings have become more diverse, and social norms are adapting to this crazy, technology-driven life. Hmm. Just think what'll have changed in the next 60 years.

Our family lived in Daytona Beach. Some of the area attractions filmed in 8mm are Cypress Gardens near Winter Haven. The Old Jail and Marineland in St. Augustine. The film is from around 1955 to 1957, and I added the music and titles in 2015. Wow, that is about a half century later. Gee I'm old.

In this 1955 newsreel short of aviation advances, the aircraft carrier USS Essex is shown, with a jet airplane missing the wire and sailing into the ocean. The pilot is rescued by helicopter. A stripped down B-36 bomber is seen at the 1 minute mark, to permit cruising at 50,000 feet. A B-47 Stratojet is shown conducting aerial refueling at the 2:00 mark. The Bell X-2 Rocket plane, flown by Pete Everest, is shown at the 3 minute mark. The newsreel ends with footage of parachute jumps.
The Bell X-2 (nicknamed "Starbuster"[1]) was an X-plane research aircraft built to investigate flight characteristics in the Mach 2–3 range. (The term "Starbuster" is seldom, if ever, found in contemporary accounts.)The X-2 was a rocket-powered, swept-wing research aircraft developed jointly in 1945 by Bell Aircraft Corporation, the U.S. Air Force and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) to explore aerodynamic problems of supersonic flight and to expand the speed and altitude regimes obtained with the earlier X-1 series of research aircraft.

The New Jersey Turnpike (shortened to NJTP and colloquially known to New Jerseyans as "the Turnpike") is a toll road in New Jersey, maintained by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. According to the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association, the Turnpike is the nation's sixth-busiest toll road and is one of the most heavily traveled highways in the United States. The Turnpike is a major thoroughfare providing access to various localities in New Jersey, as well as Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York. The route divides into four roadways at exit 6, with lanes restricted to carrying only cars, and with lanes for cars, trucks and buses.
The northern part of the mainline turnpike, along with the entirety of its extensions and spurs, is part of the Interstate Highway System, designated as Interstate 95 (I-95) between exit 6 and its northern end. Construction of the mainline from conceptualization to completion took 23 months, from 1950 to 1952. It was officially opened to traffic in November 1951, between its southern terminus and exit 10.
The Turnpike has 12-foot-wide (3.7 m) lanes, 10-foot-wide (3.0 m) shoulders, 13 rest areas named after notable residents of New Jersey, and unusual exit signage that was considered the pinnacle of highway building in the 1950s. The Interstate Highway System took some of its design guidelines by copying the Turnpike's design guidelines. To some degree, the Turnpike is considered iconic in pop culture, having been referenced in music, film and television.
The task of building the Turnpike was not an easy one. One major problem was the construction in the city of Elizabeth, where either 450 homes or 32 businesses would be destroyed, depending on the chosen route. The engineers decided to go through the residential area, since they considered it the grittiest and the closest route to both Newark Airport and the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal seaport.
When construction finally got to Newark, there was the new challenge of deciding to build either over or under the Pulaski Skyway. If construction went above the Skyway, the costs would be much higher. If they went under, the costs would be lower, but the roadway would be very close to the Passaic River, making it harder for ships to pass through. The Turnpike was ultimately built to pass under. As part of a 2005 seismic retrofit project, the Turnpike Authority lowered its roadway to increase vertical clearance and allow for full-width shoulders, which had been constrained by the location of the skyway supports.[31] Engineers replaced the bearings and lowered the bridge by four feet (1.2 m), without shutting down traffic. The work was carried out under a $35 million contract in 2004 by Koch Skanska of Carteret, New Jersey. The engineers for the project were from a joint venture of Dewberry Goodking Inc. and HNTM Corp. Temporary towers were used to support the bridge while bearings were removed from each of the 150 piers and the concrete replaced on the pier tops. The lowering process for an 800-foot (240 m) section of the bridge was done over 56 increments, during five weeks of work.
While continuing up to the New Jersey Meadowlands, the crossings were harder because of the fertile marsh land of silt and mud. Near the shallow mud, the mud was filled with crushed stone, and the roadway was built above the water table. In the deeper mud, caissons were sunk down to a firm stratum and filled with sand, then both the caissons and the surrounding areas were covered with blankets of sand. Gradually, the water was brought up, and drained into adjacent meadows. Then, the construction of the two major bridges over the Passaic River and Hackensack River were completed. The bridges were built to give motorists a clear view of the New York City skyline, but with high retaining walls to create the illusion of not being on a river crossing. The 6,955 ft (2,120 m) Passaic River (Chaplain Washington) Bridge cost $13.7 million to construct and the 5,623 ft (1,714 m) Hackensack River Bridge cost $9.5 million.

Hillary Howard, a news anchor for Washington radio station WTOP-FM, took over as host subsequent to McGarry's official retirement in November 2011.The Baltimore show is hosted by David Zahren. The show features three local high school teams of three players each. Over the years, chief sponsor Giant Food has given more than $2,000,000 in scholarship funds to participating schools. In 2014, James Hubert Blake High School became the first ever school to win three consecutive super bowls in the Washington edition of It's Academic.

Produced in 1957 by the film unit of the Shell Oil Company, SONG OF THE CLOUDS is a portrait of the aviation industry in the years immediately before the introduction of the jet passenger plane. Shot all over the world, the movie stresses the "internationalism" of the air. It also goes to great length to show airport activities in different parts of the world and co-operation between countries to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers. The film was directed by the great John Armstrong, assisted by cinematographers Eduard van der Enden, Derek Witham and Ronnie Whitehouse, and featured a score by Richard Bennett. It aired on the BBC on and off for nearly a decade. Some of the locations shown include the USA, New York International Airport, Miami, San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge, Andes, Lebanon, Beirut, Cairo, Italy, Rome, Australia, Sydney, Argentina, Rio, San Salvadore, Newfoundland, Artic, Africa, Ethiopia, Venezuala, Pacific, and Peru.
This film is one of a series made by Shell as part of its public relations efforts. All the films in the series are well-made and use innovative techniques for their time. The company spent over $1 million dollars in the 1950s -- roughly $10 million in today's world -- on its film library.

This documentary follows the development of armor from early war chariot to modern tank in today's Army. The Armor Team as seen in this film is a deadly tentacle. It moves over the terrain, reaching deep into the heart of the enemy's forces, destroying pockets of resistance which have survived the atomic burst and supporting artillery fire. The emergence of the Armor Team on the field of combat has often decided the course of battle in modern war.

Armored warfare or tank warfare is the use of armored fighting vehicles in modern warfare. It is a major component of modern methods of war. The premise of armored warfare rests on the ability of troops to penetrate conventional defensivelines through use of manoeuvre by armored units.
Much of the application of armored warfare depends on the use of tanks and related vehicles used by other supporting arms such as infantry fighting vehicles and self-propelled artillery, as well as mounted combat engineers and other support units. The doctrine of armored warfare was developed to break the static nature of World War I trench warfare on theWestern Front, and return to the 19th century school of thought that advocated manoeuvre and "decisive battle" outcomes in military strategy.
Though the U.S. had established the Tank Corps in WWI using French Renault FT light tanks and British Mark V and Mark V*heavy tanks, and some officers like Dwight D. Eisenhower and George S. Patton, Jr. emerged from that war initially as avid proponents of continuing and developing an American armored force, the rapid reduction of the forces and apathy and even antipathy towards funding and maintaining armed forces in the inter-war years led to relative stagnation of armored doctrine in the United States.
The Armored Force of the US Army was born on 10 July 1940, with the Headquarters at Fort Knox. On July 15, 1940, the 7th Cavalry Brigade (Mechanised) became the 1st Armored Division; the 7th Provisional Tank Brigade, an infantry tank unit at Fort Benning, became the 2nd Armored Division". The Tank Battalion was established at Fort Meade, Md.
The popular conception in the United States was that tanks had been used boldly as part of a new system of war called Blitzkrieg. Under General Jacob L. Devers, Chief of the Armored Force, doctrine evolved into a combined arms operational force consisting of primarily infantry, artillery, and tanks with tanks being the major manoeuvre component. Under this doctrine, US tank crews of both armored divisions and GHQ tank battalions were taught to fight tanks in tank on tank engagements.
The US Combined Arms team included air support, artillery, engineers, and a tank component supplemented by the Tank Destroyer concept. The latter is most closely identified with the Chief of Army Ground Forces, General Leslie McNair. To counter the enemy blitzkrieg McNair sought to improve the organic anti-tank strength of the US infantry divisions by attaching towed AT guns and equipping the infantry with hand-held Bazookas. To stem the flood of marauding panzers, fast moving powerfully armed Tank destroyer battalions were created to be held back and used in the counter-attack.
It was believed that conventional tanks that could take on the enemy Panthers and Tigers toe to toe would not have the speed and mobility to avoid being flanked and bypassed and therefore would not have the chance to fight. It was also calculated that US interests would be better served by large numbers of reliable (battle-worthiness) medium tanks rather than a smaller number of un-reliable heavy tanks. It was decided therefore to slow the production of the US heavy tank designs such as the M26 Pershing and concentrate resources on mass-producing the M4 Sherman and tank destroyers such as the M18 Hellcat. Since the Sherman medium tank would be inferior to the enemy heavy tanks they would have to avoid tank-vs-tank combat as much as possible, leaving enemy tanks to the tank destroyers.
The tank destroyers had to be fast. To achieve the desired mobility and agility from the engines available the armor protection was sacrificed, a measure of protection coming from being nimble and hopefully from being able to knock out the enemy before they could get a shot in. Although they had guns of around about 76 mm, the tank destroyer units were issued with the ancestor of the modern Armor-piercing discarding sabot, rounds which made their guns much more powerful than a simple comparison of calibres would suggest.
