They too were subjugated by Assyria and the Hittites for centuries. The Egyptians fought the Hittites for control over western Syria; the fighting reach

And in the texts from the ancient city of Mari in present day Syria in the 18th century BC and in the ugaritic text from Ugarit (Ras Shamra). 1.The Arameans as people, possess a nations all capacities such as a language, as well cultural and ethnical identity. But its an oppressed people, whose original land is divided between occupational forces. The Aramean people have been a subject for the most brutal massacre known in our modern history. This has been known as the GENOCIDE. The Great powers have recognized the GENOCIDE of the Armenian people was liable to by the evil Ottoman power. The Aramean people is still standing for the spreading of awareness among our people and for the Turkeys recognition of all crimes committed against our peaceful and innocent forefathers. Despite the fact that the Arameans have been scattered all over the world and their historical land has been occupied, there is hope represented by the Aramean youth who are standing for learning their own history and to claim and to get their national rights.

Info: Arameans should not be confused with ‘Armenians’. Arameans speak Aramaic, the language spoken by Abraham, Moses and Jesus.
Whether Jesus spoke only Aramaic is often disputed by some scholars , but their is ample evidence that it was probably his first language aside from Hebrew and possibly Greek.
One of the most striking Aramaic sentences found on the lips of Jesus in the Gospels is: "eli eli lema sabachthani". The sentence is then translated into Greek by Matthew and Mark, with the English meaning: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Around the 14th century BC, various Semitic peoples appeared in the area, such as the semi-nomadic Suteans who came into an unsuccessful conflict with Babylonia to the east, and the West Semitic speaking Arameans who subsumed the earlier Amorites. They too were subjugated by Assyria and the Hittites for centuries. The Egyptians fought the Hittites for control over western Syria; the fighting reached its zenith in 1274 BC with the Battle of Kadesh. The west remained part of the Hittite empire until it's destruction c. 1200 BC, while eastern Syria largely became part of the Middle Assyrian Empire, who also annexed much of the west during the reign of Tiglath-Pileser I 1114–1076 BC.
With the destruction of the Hittites and the decline of Assyria in the late 11th century BC, the Aramean tribes gained control of much of the interior, founding states such as Bit Bahiani, Aram-Damascus, Hamath, Aram-Rehob, Aram-Naharaim, and Luhuti. From this point, the region became known as Aramea or Aram. There was also a synthesis between the Semitic Arameans and the remnants of the Indo-European Hittites, with the founding of a number of Syro-Hittite states centered in north central Aram (Syria) and south central Asia Minor (modern Turkey), including Palistin, Carchemish and Sam'al.
A Canaanite group known as the Phoenicians came to dominate the coasts of Syria, (and also Lebanon and northern Paletine) from the 13th century BC, founding city states such as Amrit, Simyra, Arwad, Paltos, Ramitha and Shuksi. From these coastal regions they eventually spread their influence throughout the Mediterranean, including building colonies in Malta, Sicily, the Iberian peninsula (modern Spain and Portugal), the coasts of North Africa, and most significantly, founding the major city state of Carthage (in modern Tunisia) in the 9th century BC which was much later to become the center of a major empire, rivaling the Roman Empire.
Syria and the entire Near East and beyond then fell to the vast Neo Assyrian Empire (911 BC – 605 BC). The Assyrians introduced Imperial Aramaic as the lingua franca of their empire, This language was to remain dominant in Syria and the entire Near East until after the Arab Islamic conquest in the 7th and 8th centuries AD, and was to be a vehicle for the spread of Christianity. The Assyrians named their colonies of Syria and Lebanon Eber-Nari. Assyrian domination ended after the Assyrians greatly weakened themselves in a series of brutal internal civil wars, followed by an attacking coalition of their former subject peoples; the Medes, Babylonians, Chaldeans, Persians, Scythians and Cimmerians. During the fall of Assyria, the Scythians ravaged and plundered much of Syria. The last stand of the Assyrian army was at Carchemish in northern Syria in 605 BC.
The Assyrian Empire was followed by the Neo-Babylonian Empire (605 BC – 539 BC). During this period, Syria became a battle ground between Babylonia and another former Assyrian colony, that of Egypt. The Babylonians, like their Assyrian relations, were victorious over Egypt.

Aramaic (Classical Syriac: ܐܪܡܝܐ Aramaya) is a family of languages or dialects, belonging to the Semitic family. More specifically, it is a part of the Northwest Semitic subfamily, which also includes Canaanite languages such as Hebrew and Phoenician. The Aramaic script was widely adopted for other languages and is ancestral to both the Arabic and modern Hebrew alphabets.
During its over 3,000 years of written history,[2] Aramaic has served variously as a language of administration of empires and as a language of divine worship. It was the lingua franca of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, Neo-Babylonian Empire and Achaemenid Empire, the day-to-day language of Yehud Medinata and of Judaea (539 BC – 70 AD), the language that Jesus probably used the most,[3][4][5] the language of large sections of the biblical books of Daniel and Ezra, and is the main language of the Talmud and Syriac Christianity, in particular the Assyrian Church of the East, the Chaldean Catholic Church, the Ancient Church of the East, the Saint Thomas Christian Churches in India, the Syriac Orthodox Church and the Maronite Church.[6] However, Jewish Aramaic was different from the other forms both in lettering and grammar. Parts of the Dead Sea Scrolls are in Jewish Aramaic showing the Jewish lettering, related to the Hebrew script. Aramaic was also the original language of the Bahrani people of Eastern Arabia.[7]
Aramaic's long history and diverse and widespread use has led to the development of many divergent varieties, which are sometimes considered dialects, though they are distinct enough that they are sometimes considered languages. Therefore, there is not one singular, static Aramaic language; each time and place rather has had its own variation. Aramaic is retained as a liturgical language by certain Eastern Christian churches, in the form of Syriac, the Aramaic variety by which Eastern Christianity was diffused, whether or not those communities once spoke it or another form of Aramaic as their vernacular, but have since shifted to another language as their primary community language.
Modern Aramaic is spoken today as a first language by many scattered, predominantly small, and largely isolated communities of differing Christian, Jewish, and Mandean ethnic groups of West Asia[8]—most numerously by the Assyrians in the form of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic and Chaldean Neo-Aramaic—that have all retained use of the once dominant lingua franca despite subsequent language shifts experienced throughout the Middle East. The Aramaic languages are now considered endangered.[9]

The Arameans, or Aramaeans, (Aramaic: ܐܪ̈ܡܝܐ, ארמיא ; ʼaramáyé) were a Northwest Semitic semi-nomadic and pastoralist people who originated in what is now modern Syria (Biblical Aram) during the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Large groups migrated to Mesopotamia where they intermingled with the native Akkadian (Assyrian and Babylonian) population. A large proportion of Syriac Christians in modern Syria still espouse an Aramean identity to this day, though few now speak the Western Aramaic language.
The Arameans never had a unified nation; they were divided into small independent kingdoms across parts of the Near East, particularly in what is now modern Syria. After the Bronze Age collapse, their political influence was confined to a number of Syro-Hittite states, which were entirely absorbed into the Neo-Assyrian Empire by the 8th century BC.
By contrast, the Aramaic language came to be the lingua franca of the entire Fertile Crescent, by Late Antiquity developing into the literary languages such as Syriac and Mandaic. Scholars have used the term "Aramaization" for the process by which the Akkadian/Assyro-Babylonian peoples became Aramaic-speaking during the later Iron Age.
Assyrian genocide

The Assyrian Genocide (also known as Sayfo or Seyfo, Syriac: ܩܛܠܐ ܕܥܡܐ ܣܘܪܝܝܐ or ܣܝܦܐ) refers to the mass slaughter of the Assyrian population of the Ottoman Empire during the 1890s and the First World War, in conjunction with the Armenian genocide and Greek genocide. The Assyrian civilian population of upper Mesopotamia (the Tur Abdin region, the Hakkâri, Van, and Siirt provinces of present-day southeastern Turkey, and the Urmia region of northwestern Iran) was forcibly relocated and massacred by the Muslim Ottoman (Turkish) army, together with other armed and allied Muslim peoples, including Kurds, Chechens and Circassians, between 1914 and 1920, with further attacks on unarmed fleeing civilians conducted by local Arab militias. Estimates on the overall death toll have varied. Providing detailed statistics of the various estimates of the Churches' population after the genocide, David Gaunt accepts the figure of 275,000 deaths as reported at the Treaty of Lausanne and ventures that the death toll would be around 300,000 because of uncounted Assyrian-inhabited areas, leading to the elimination of half of the Assyrian nation.
The Assyrian genocide took place in the same context as the Armenian and Pontic Greek genocides. In these events, close to three million Christians of Syriac, Armenian or Greek Orthodox denomination were murdered by the Young Turks regime.
Since the "Assyrian genocide" took place within the context of the much more widespread Armenian genocide, scholarship treating it as a separate event is scarce, with the exceptions of the works of David Gaunt and Hannibal Travis. In 2007, the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) reached a consensus that "the Ottoman campaign against Christian minorities of the Empire between 1914 and 1923 constituted a genocide against Armenians, Assyrians, and Pontian and Anatolian Greeks. The IAGS referred to the work of Gaunt and Travis in passing this resolution. Gregory Stanton, the President of the IAGS in 2007--2008 and the founder of Genocide Watch, endorsed the "repudiation by the world's leading genocide scholars of the Turkish government's ninety-year denial of the Ottoman Empire's genocides against its Christian populations, including Assyrians, Greeks, and Armenians.

The World Council of Arameans (Syriacs) ("WCA")
Established in 1983, the World Council of Arameans (Syriacs) (“WCA”), formerly known as the Syriac Universal Alliance, is a global umbrella organization representing the various Aramaic (Syriac) national federations in the continents of Europe, America, Australia and the Middle East. The WCA is the widely acknowledged voice of the Aramean (Syriac) people whose interests and needs it aims to serve, defend and promote. Since 1999, the WCA is the only Aramaic-speaking Non-Governmental Organization in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and the Social Council of the United Nations. This privileged position meant that the WCA could send delegates to the UN Headquarters in New York (UNHQ) and to its Offices in Vienna (UNOV) and Geneva (UNOG).
Ever since, the WCA has attended various conferences and meetings in these cities, where human rights, the rights of indigenous peoples, crime prevention, human trafficking, drugs control and more are all on the international agenda. The UNOG is the political arena where one can inform the world about the Aramean people, their precarious situation and lack of socio-political and cultural rights in the homeland. Hence the WCA's main focus for activities are especially in Geneva and New York. One of the noteworthy achievements at UNOG was the presentation of The Hidden Pearl (23 July 2003) in one of the conference rooms. It was successfully organized by Arameans from the USA, Australia and five European countries.
Another big project of the WCA and its Member Federations is Suryoyo Sat (www.suryoyosat.com). This satellite channel exists since 2006. The promoters often stress that it is the TV-channel by and for the Aramean (Syriac) people, which is free of any external support and foreign influences. Its objectives and agenda are basically the same as those of the WCA. Its directors and employees (both paid and volunteers) work on a democratic basis, with a transparent structure and with a sincere concern, love and passion for their people and language. Suryoyo Sat broadcasts primarily in Aramaic, but occasionally also in other languages, and has a reach of more than 80 countries. Arameans are able to enjoy its diverse socio-political, cultural, entertaining and educational programs and developments, as well as the link to their people in the Homeland and the Diaspora. Suryoyo Sat directly connects Arameans everywhere in the world with each other; especially since it is also available via the Internet.
These two basic qualifications, in addition to its multifarious activities, place the WCA in a leading role with the global Aramean (Syriac) community. Among others, the WCA seeks close cooperation with national governments, the United Nations, the European Union and the Council of Europe.
The WCA is dedicated to answer the call to protect and secure the rights, liberty and equality of the Aramean people, safeguard and promote the cultural heritage of its ancestors, ensuring justice, and uniting all its people as a self-determined and internationally recognized Aramean nation.

At a recent town Hall Meeting in John McCain's home state of Arizona, the war mongering senator was completely taken apart by a Syrian American woman in attendance. Implied in her argument is the track record of the US government lying to its citizens to gain consent for a war that then increases destruction, increases the amount of dead and displaced. Increases the amount of children orphaned by a bloodthirsty and money thirsty US foreign policy. Increases the amount of children in far off lands who pose no threat to US national security whose lives will be ruined and who will grow up, understandably more inclined to fly a plan into a building o two. This is a view shared by a majority of Americans. But McCain can live with all of that. What really seemed to unnerve McCain was the wise suggestion that we pressure Saudi Arabia and Iran -- each with a vested interest in the Syrian civil war- and get them to back off and create space for a negotiated peace.

In recognizing the Genocide of the Arameans (Syriacs), the Armenian Parliament refers to “Asori.” In Armenian, “Asori” and “Asoreren” are well-acknowledged terms to mean “Syrian” people and “Syriac” language, which are originally Greek terms for the Semitic (Hebrew and Aramaic) names of the “Aramean” people and “Aramaic” language. Historians, linguists and scholars of Armenian Studies widely confirm the historical and linguistic fact that “Asori” should be translated as “Syrian; Aramean.” They have also clearly clarified the confusing and inaccurate translation of the resembling English term “Assyrian,” which itself is actually “Asorestants’i” in Armenian.

19:35 Inleiding door Johny Messo, voorzitter World Council of Arameans
19:45 Compilatiefilm over Maaloula en de vervolging van christenen in Syrië en Irak
