In this classic interview from 1989, Dr. Carl Sagan, possibly the greatest populariser of fundamental science in modern history, has a conversation with CNN founder and environmental philanthropist Ted Turner.
Ted Turner, like many others, acknowledged Carl Sagan's message about the importance of scientific reason about difficult matters such as environmental destruction and the threat of nuclear war early on and is responsible, in part, in drawing attention to the issue of environmental destruction to the masses.
Turner undoubtedly monopolised the cable television sector making CNN one of the most powerful forms of mass media on earth. Fully aware that his financial gain was the direct result of the high technology of the time, Turner had responsibility to interview one of the leading scientists in the public sphere back then.
Carl Sagan realised that part of the problem of nuclear war and global warming was the lack of understanding that the damage they can cause are both non-mutually exclusive to the countries that are responsible and the countries which are not responsible.
In other words, greenhouse gases and radioactive smoke and dust do not recognise borders between countries, CO2 and radiation do not carry passports.
Carl Sagan's work in the consequences of nuclear winter, which he derived mainly by Mie Scattering calculations of dust molecules in Martian dust storms, predicted to happen under certain conditions following a nuclear war was a key part in the development of the theory of Nuclear Winter which is one of the leading arguments against the perceived stability in the policy of Mutually Assured Destruction (M.A.D). Other scenarios, such as atmospheric irradiation, which would permanently destroy the Ozonosphere, and long term radioactive fallout are probably more likely, and more disastrous, scenarios making Carl's predictions somewhat optimistic.
Moreover, human made climate change induced by CO2 and Methane emissions by intense industrial society has been predicted, using computer modelling at MIT and Caltech and others, showing a runaway global warming effect if Arctic and Antarctic permafrost is melted which would release huge amounts of trapped methane into the atmosphere warming the earth by perhaps 5 degrees or more at the equator, up to 12 degrees at the poles which would cause sea and ocean levels everywhere to rise as well as shifting of ocean and air currents causing unpredictable and much more energetic weather formations.
Continuous Ozone depletion and water acidification and contamination are also serious issues as is the issue of fresh water shortage, which will tally the consequences of climate change to everyday human life.
Carl Sagan shows us that our technological progress, unregulated, gives humanity the power to do utter devastation to the environment and to the human species itself. logically regulated however, Carl has taught us that the proper use of technology and the proper action to scientific knowledge can also do great good to the soften the impact of a technical civilization on the environment and towards helping the human community on a global scale.
We should start taking Carl Sagan's and many others' example of thinking of the border divides between countries as imaginary to avoid global catastrophe by the threats of warfare by weapons of mass destruction and by global warming and environmental destruction.
The silver lining of such actions would be, as Carl Sagan observes, the driving force that unites the human species to become a planetary civilization.
Other Issues such as global poverty and the importance of science and mathematics education, fundamental science research and exploration are discussed and some more esoteric topics are discussed as well such as life on other planets, the philosophical implications of future technologies, the existence/non-existence of God(s) and the possible future of the human species.

Carl Sagan opens the program with a description of the cosmos and a "Spaceship of the Imagination" (shaped like a dandelion seed). The ship journeys through the universe's hundred billion galaxies, the Local Group, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way, the Orion Nebula, our Solar System, and finally the planet Earth. Eratosthenes' successful calculation of the circumference of Earth leads to a description of the ancient Library of Alexandria. Finally, the "Ages of Science" are described, before pulling back to the full span of the Cosmic Calendar. Note: the revised version of the series adds an introduction by Ann Druyan to this episode, recorded after Sagan's death, in which she discusses some of the changes that occurred in the years after its broadcast.

"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."
― Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space
"Ann Druyan suggests an experiment: Look back again at the pale blue dot of the preceding chapter. Take a good long look at it. Stare at the dot for any length of time and then try to convince yourself that God created the whole Universe for one of the 10 million or so species of life that inhabit that speck of dust. Now take it a step further: Imagine that everything was made just for a single shade of that species, or gender, or ethnic or religious subdivision. If this doesn't strike you as unlikely, pick another dot. Imagine it to be inhabited by a different form of intelligent life. They, too, cherish the notion of a God who has created everything for their benefit. How seriously do you take their claim?"

Carl Sagan's last interview, part 1 of 3
Carl Sagan gave his last interview with Charlie rose on May 27th 1996. He discussed pseudo-science, religion, unfounded claims, his personal love affair with science and his struggle with myelodysplasia as well as other elements of his last book: The Demon-Haunted World.
I thought it was important that a high quality copy of this interview, with proper audio video sync, was made available on youtube.
The Demon-Haunted World changed my life in ways more profound than I thought possible. That book, and the name of Carl Sagan, should be known to every high school graduate.

Nuclear winter (also known as atomic winter) is a hypothetical climatic effect of countervalue nuclear war. Models suggest that detonating dozens or more nuclear weapons on cities prone to firestorm, comparable to the Hiroshima of 1945, could have a profound and severe effect on the climate causing cold weather and reduced sunlight for a period of months or even years by the emission of large amounts of the firestorms smoke and soot into the Earth's stratosphere.
Similar climatic effects can be caused by comets or an asteroid impact, also sometimes termed an impact winter, or by a supervolcano eruption, known as a volcanic winter.
During the early 1980s, Fidel Castro recommended to the Kremlin a harder line against Washington, even suggesting the possibility of nuclear strikes. The pressure stopped after Soviet officials gave Castro a briefing on the ecological impact on Cuba of nuclear strikes on the United States.[60]
In an interview in 2000, Mikhail Gorbachev, in response to the comment "In the 1980s, you warned about the unprecedented dangers of nuclear weapons and took very daring steps to reverse the arms race," said "Models made by Russian and American scientists showed that a nuclear war would result in a nuclear winter that would be extremely destructive to all life on Earth; the knowledge of that was a great stimulus to us, to people of honor and morality, to act in that situation."[61]
As the implications of nuclear winter began to be taken seriously in the late 1980s, military analysts turned their attention to the development of nuclear warheads that would explode at low altitudes and cause less thermal radiation ignited fires, thus reducing the likelihood of a nuclear winter. The TTAPS paper had described a 3000 MT counterforce attack on ICBM sites; Michael Altfeld of Michigan State University and political scientist Stephen Cimbala of Pennsylvania State University argued that smaller, more accurate warheads and lower detonation heights could produce the same counterforce strike with only 3 MT and produce less climatic effects, even if cities were targeted, as lower fuzing heights, such as surface bursts, would limit the range of the burning thermal rays due to terrain masking and shadowing, while also temporarily lofting far more radioactive soil into the atmosphere. Therefore as a consequence of attempting to limit the target fire hazard by reducing the range of thermal radiation with fuzing for surface bursts, this will result in a scenario were the far more concentrated, and therefore deadlier, local fallout that is generated following a surface burst forms, as opposed to the comparatively dilute global fallout created when nuclear weapons are fuzed in air burst mode.[62][63] Altfeld and Cimbala also suggested that belief in the possibility of nuclear winter has actually made nuclear war more likely, contrary to the views of Sagan and others, because it has inspired the development of more accurate, and lower explosive yield, nuclear weapons.
