As Vladimir Putin begins his third term as Russian president, we ask if Russia can become a superpower once again.
President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday ordered construction sped up on a multi-billion-dollar spaceport in Russia's Far East that he said would break reliance on the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and launch future missions to the Moon and Mars.
Putin flew in a helicopter over the sprawling building site in Vostochny at a time when conflict with Ukraine, maker of Zenit and Dnepr rockets, is highlighting the fragility of Russia's dependence on former Soviet republics in defense and space.
Building a new launchpad on its own soil is central to Putin's effort to reform a once-pioneering space industry hobbled by years of budget cuts and a brain drain in the 1990s.
"Our own space infrastructure and modern network of cosmodromes ... will allow Russia to strengthen its standing as a leading space superpower and guarantee the independence of space activities," Putin said at Vostochny, near Russia's border with China.
Taking to task officials, Putin said construction was lagging behind by up to three months and the 6,000 workers currently at the site was half the number it should be.
"In the future, the capacity of the cosmodrome will be expanded ... to be used to realize program to explore the Moon, Mars and other space objects," he said.
Russia has already ploughed some 100 billion roubles into construction of the new spaceport, Putin said, to replace the Baikonur site that it has leased from Kazakhstan since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Another 50 billion roubles is earmarked for the project through 2015, he said, hefty spending for a budget strained by the cost of annexing Ukraine's Crimea region and an economy stuttering under Western sanctions.
Despite Russia's current financial woes, a senior official tasked with overseeing the space industry vowed the country would not back down from investment in space.
Thank You!
GOD BLESS

In 2014, President Obama named the three major threats to US national security; ISIS, Russia and Ebola (because spiraling national debt, unequal distribution of wealth, over-incarceration, climate change etc are less pressing issues.)
It would be fair to say that Russian politicians took much offence to being placed in this list, next to a terror organisation and a disease.
In relation to this statement, Putin answers a number of questions from a US journalist at the Valdai International Discussion Club, late 2014.
To draw his point to a close, Putin mirrors the words of John F Kennedy in a 1963 speech titled "A Strategy for Peace", unusual for its time due to the warm address to the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War.

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has wound up a visit to Japan by indulging in one of his favourite past-times.
Mr Putin donned a traditional dogi (DOH-GEE) before settling down for a bout of the Japanese martial art of judo.
VOICE-OVER:
00.02 After two days of tough talking Vladimir Putin was ready to indulge in something a little more physical on Tuesday.
The Russian hardman is a keen practitioner of judo.
He first learnt the Japanese martial art while in the K-G-B, and now has a black belt.
His trip to Japan gave him the chance to hone his skills.
First up was a Judo instructor.
Putin seemed more than equal to the task.
00.27 UPSOUND of instructor hitting the ground
00.31 Prime Minister Mori clearly enjoyed the bout.
But with the two leaders still disagreeing over a territorial dispute, he would've been more pleased by the performance of Putin's next opponent.
00.41 UPSOUND of Putin hitting the ground
00.46 The two-day summit was the latest in a series of efforts to overcome decades of mistrust between the countries.
The talks failed to decide the future of four Russian-controlled islands which Japan claims as its own.
The islands - known as the Kurils in Russia and as the Northern Territories in Japan - stand in the way of a peace treaty which would formally end more than 50 years of hostility.
But the two sides did manage to sign agreements on trade and regional security.
Putin also invited Mori for a return visit, before leaving Japan to head for New York and the U-N millennium summit.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denounced Turkey's downing of a Russian bomber on the Syrian border as a huge mistake.
Speaking on the sidelines of a climate change summit in Paris, Putin said that Ankara’s move was dictated by desire to defend the ISIL's oil supplies to Turkey. The Russian President noted that he refused to meet with Turkish President Erdogan on the sidelines of the summit. Putin's snub comes after the Turkish leader called for face-to-face talks in Paris to discuss the issue. Earlier in the day, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu stressed that there won't be any apologies for shooting down the Russian warplane.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump defended Vladimir Putin over the weekend, discounting allegations that the Russian president has been linked to the killing of journalists.
Although it is widely believed that Putin was involved in the death of at least eight journalists for criticizing him, the billionaire began defending the ex-KGB chief following an endorsement of Trump’s presidential campaign.
“I think that our country does plenty of killing, too,” Trump explained to MSNBC last week.
During an interview with ABC News on Sunday, host George Stephanopoulos asked Trump which killings by the U.S. were like the sanctioned murder of journalists.
Trump insisted that “hundreds of thousands of people” had been killed because “Hillary Clinton made some horrible decisions.”
“That’s not the same as ordering killing,” Stephanopoulos noted.
“As far as the reporters are concerned, obviously, I don’t want that to happen,” Trump said. “But in all fairness to Putin, you’re saying he killed people. I haven’t seen that. I don’t know that he has. Have you been able to prove that? Do you know the names of the reporters that he’s killed?”
“I haven’t seen any evidence that he killed anybody in terms of reporters,” he continued. “I don’t think anybody knows that. It’s possible that he does, but I don’t think it’s been proven. Has anybody proven that he’s killed reporters?”
“Yeah, sure, there are allegations. I’ve read those allegations over the years, but nobody has proven that he’s killed anybody as far as I’m concerned.”
Trump opined that Putin had not “stood with a gun or taken the blame or admitted that he’s killed.”
“He’s always denied it,” Trump observed. “It’s never been proven that he killed anybody. So you know, you’re supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, at least in our country. He has not been proven that he’s killed reporters.”
The Republican frontrunner pointed back to the U.S. invasion of Iraq and suggested that it was equivalent to targeting reporters.
“I’m saying when you say a man has killed reporters, I’d like you to prove it,” Trump argued. “And I’m saying it would be a terrible thing if it were true. But I have never seen any information or any proof that he killed reporters.”

Watch Republican Presidential Candidate Iowa Campaign Rally Full Speech
Christmas appears to have come early for Presidential candidate Donald Trump as he basked in the praise received from Russian President Vladimir Putin while on the campaign trail in Iowa Saturday.
"Russia's got plenty of problems. But I'll tell you what, if Putin likes me and he thinks I'm a good, smart person, that's a good thing. Not a bad thing," Trump said.
Acknowledging that Trump's GOP rivals didn't exactly think an endorsement from Putin was something to gloat about, the billionaire businessman told the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, crowd in his best Jeb Bush voice "Putin called him brilliant, that's not good."
Accusing Bush and others of wanting to ignite "World War III," Trump pondered what it would be like if Russia and the U.S. could "knock out an enemy together."
"This would be a great start if you think about it. The money we spend on fighting everybody," Trump told his Christmas themed rally.
Weighing in on Saturday night's Democratic presidential debate, Trump called Hillary Clinton "a snake" and Bernie Sanders a "poor guy ... gave this whole thing away," referring to the first debate when Sanders said, "Enough with the damn emails," and said he would not criticize Clinton about her controversial use of a private server while she was secretary of state.
When discussing the Second Amendment, an issue near and dear to many Iowans, Trump brought his son Donald Trump Jr. and his family on stage. It was Trump's two grandchildren who stole the show.
"Thank you for supporting my Grandpa and thank you for being here on this beautiful day," said Trump's 8-year-old granddaughter Kai Madison.
Then Trump's grandson Donnie also had a message for his grandfather's supporters: "Merry Christmas everyone."

Donald J. Trump welcomed the kind words he received this week from Vladimir V. Putin on Friday, praising the Russian president’s leadership and brushing off concerns that his regime kills journalists and political opponents. “When people call you ‘brilliant’ it’s always good, especially when the person heads up Russia,” Mr. Trump said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program. Asked to justify his warm feelings toward Mr. Putin, considering his willingness to invade other countries, target reporters and use force against political opponents, Mr. Trump suggested that such behavior was not a big deal. “He’s running his country and at least he’s a leader,” Mr. Trump said. “You know, unlike we have in this country.” Incredulous at the response, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough followed up by asking how Mr. Trump, the Republican presidential candidate who leads most of the polls, could possibly condone such policies. “I think our country does plenty of killing also, Joe,” Mr. Trump responded. “There’s a lot of stupidity going on in the world right now, Joe. A lot of killing going on and a lot of stupidity and that’s the way it is.” Given one more chance to condemn Mr. Putin’s treatment of journalists and political opponents, Mr. Trump finally conceded that it was wrong. “Oh sure, absolutely,” he said.

The first time a NATO member has downed a Russian plane in a half-century. Turkey has shot down a Russia jet, and the two pilots were reportedly killed. What will be the fallout of this, coming at this sensitive time on the war on Syria? In this edition of the debate, we’ll discuss what possible motives Turkey would have by this act, and how this would impact the Vienna talks held over Syria crisis, and France’s push for coordinated action with Russia against the Deash terrorists.
1. A serious escalation between these 2 countries: the first time a NATO member has downed a Russian plane in a half-century. The two pilots were reportedly killed.
2. The shooting down of a Russian warplane is a "new crime" that will be added to the record of insurgent groups and the countries that finance and arm them.
3. German Foreign Minister Steinmeier says hopes Turkey's downing of Russian warplane won't be setback to Syria peace talks.
4. U.S.-led coalition operations in Syria and Iraq are continuing "as planned? - This is an incident between the Russian and the Turkish governments. It is not an issue that involves the (U.S.-led coalition operations)
5. President Vladimir Putin calls Turkey's downing of a Russian fighter jet a stab in the back administered by "the accomplices of terrorists," saying the incident would have serious consequences for Moscow's relations with Ankara.
6. Stoltenberg, the head of the NATO military alliance of which Turkey is a member. "Need to avoid escalation #Turkey #Russia,"
7. The shooting down comes at an awkward time as French President Francois Hollande tries to include Russia in a coalition to take on the Daesh terror group in Syria and Iraq in the wake of the deadly Paris attacks of November 13

Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to inaugurate Moscow’s biggest mosque on Wednesday, September 23. President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev and President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas are due to attend the ceremony. Muslims make up roughly 14 percent of Russia’s population and about 300,000 of them live in Moscow. The new mosque, which will be the seventh in Moscow, is expected to help decongest other mosques in the city, which are inundated by the capital’s growing Muslim population.
